County-wide OC Business Journal ad campaign launches in March 2012! For many years, the 16 Boys & Girls
Clubs in Orange County have been
working together to develop projects
that benefit all Clubs. We meet
monthly and work together on
events like the Youth of the Year,
Unity Day, training programs, etc.
Some years ago, a 501(c)3 Orange
County Alliance corporation was
formed to enable large donors to
donate to one united front.
Although the concept had merit, the
reality is that the Alliance didn’t
work. We now working to close the
Alliance, but as one final project
have banded together to create a 25
-month ad campaign. The adst will
run in the Orange County Business
Journal and bring awareness of
Boys & Girls Clubs to OC
professionals. The campaign will
start with a two page color ad in the
2012 Giving Guide and continue
with 24, 1/3 page color monthly, ads
in the journal. The 24 ads will begin
in April and are made up of one ad
per club designed to highlight a
special project that club is doing
combined with 8 general ads
promoting all clubs. All ads are
designed with a bottom section that
reads, “Support Your Local Boys &
Girls Club” GREAT FUTURES
START HERE. followed by a listing
of all 16 organizations. Huntington
Valley is lthe lead in the ad designs
and will be the contact to the
Orange County Business Journal.
The cost of this campaign is
$40,000 and will be paid for by the
remaining funds in the Alliance
checking account. I’m excited to
begin this project and believe
strongly that it will benefit all clubs in
Orange County. A few of the ads
we have designed are displayed on
this page and continued on the
back, page 4, of this report.

Kingston Branch, Fountain Valley February 2012 Page 2
“100 Days of
Learning”
We had a very eventful month at
the Kingston Branch. Our annual
Youth of the Year dinner, which
honors all of the Kingston
Branch’s “kids of the month,” was
very successful and moving.
Nearly 200 parents and family-
friends attended the event.
During the dinner we announced
the Kingston Branch Youth of the
Year, Cassidy Walley. Her
dedication to school and club
programs, as well as her wiliness
to always help others, are some
of the many reasons why
Cassidy was selected as
Kingston’s Youth of the Year.
This month our Kindergartners
achieved an important milestone,
reaching their 100th day of
learning at the Boys & Girls Club.
We celebrated the 100th day
with a variety of interactive math
games, puzzles, and art projects
that encouraged imagination and
learning in a fun and positive
way. The kindergartners had a
blast, and did not realize that
they spent the entire afternoon
doing math and learning! Finally,
t h e K i n g s t o n B r a n c h ’ s
“Friendship Carnival” was very
successful, with over 150
members attending. During the
carnival, members participated in
team building activities promoting
friendship, played lots of carnival
games, and won prizes.
Learning Center Child Development Preschool, FV The last two months have been
very busy for the Learning
Center, for February the children
made friendship day cards to
exchange with their peers during
the “Friendship Day” celebration.
The classrooms planned a
healthy “Snack” party for the
day, and the parents helped with
the celebration by providing red
strawberries, peppers,
grapes, watermelon,
pink lemonade, and red
velvet mini cupcakes.
On January 26, we had
a person from the
OCDE visit the Pre-K
classroom and did an
observation on the
teachers and the class.
The observation is part of
the OCQIS - OC Quality
Improvement System- that
the Learning Center is a
part of. On Friday, Feb. 24,
the teachers and Director
will meet with the Observer
to discuss the findings and
set goals for improvement
and implementation.
The Directors have also been
very busy conducting tours and
enrolling new students. By the
end of February we will have
98 students enrolled at the
Learning Center. An amazing
growth from the 32 students we
started with 5 months ago.

HB Branch Well a lot has transpired since we
last talked. In January we Honored
Martin Luther King Jr, by culturing
our children on who he was and his
mission for equality for all people.
We coincided Martin Luther King Jr.
Day with an Anti-bullying week. We
called the week “Be a friend not a
bully”. Our Torch Club made a video
on the different types of bullying and
how to get help in each situation.
We showed the video to all the
members to show how bullying effect
others. Our Smart Girls made
friendship jewelry to share with other
members. This was to show the
positives when doing things for
others not only make the recipients
feel good but also the people
creating and giving the jewelry. The
week was culminated by creating a
mural wall. Our children were given
paints, markers and pens to write
their pledges on the wall stating how
they would not be bullies.
January finished off with a bang. We
had an awesome Chinese New
Year’s Carnival. We also put on a
Cultural Feast for our children to
sample the cuisine from China. The
celebration ended with a dragon
parade. Many of our kids have
never seen a dragon parade before.
The reaction to the parade by our
m e m b e r s w a s i n c r e d i b l e
enthusiasm. They can’t wait until
next year.
ClubHouse Academy, Huntington Beach 2011 was capped off by some
amazing performances at our
Winter Dance Recital. This time
around we had over 100 young
dancers perform in over 20 acts
in all types of dance from ballet
and tap to hip-hop and jazz.
The gym was packed for both
performances and the kids had
a great time doing their routines
in front of a packed house.
The new year kicked off quickly
with the start of the flag football
season. We just finished the
semi-finals of the playoffs and
are eagerly anticipating the
championship games that are
rapidly approaching.
Just around the corner are the
spring basketball and arena
soccer evaluations with the
season beginning at
the end of March.
The ClubHouse is
also happy to
announce our Youth
of the Year for 2011,
a fine young man
named Tyler Le. He
has been a club member for 8
years now! He plays
basketball with the club almost
every season and his
teammates and coaches have
nothing but great things to say
about him. We are truly lucky
to have him in our programs.
On another exciting note,
February marks the beginning
of the theatre season. This
time around we have 5 casts
and 10 performances. The
shows have started and will
continue thrul March 11th. Join
us for a trip into the exciting
land of Seuss!
Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool, HB
The beginning of January was
celebrated with our one year
anniversary in our new building!
Children came to school in their
cozy pajamas and they celebrated
with a cookie decorating party.
Staffs took advantage of lower
numbers in the classrooms due to
Winter Break on the college
campus and were able to work
more one on one with the kids on
goals and specif ic school
readiness criteria. Children ages 3
-5 have been actively working on
criteria that help them learn how to
write their name, sounds and
recognition of the alphabet,
counting from 1-30 and identifying
the numbers, working on longer
attention spans and of course
building on their independence.
The pre-k children worked on the
letter “P” recently and created
piñatas, made pink pudding,
took their own photographs
and built their own pizza’s all
which happen to start with the
letter “P.”
February was a month filled
with love and friendships! Staff
has been incorporating the
feeling “love,” friendships,
heart shapes, and mixing
colors to make red, purple and
pink into lesson plans. We
celebrated Friendship Day on
Tuesday February 14th where
the children created friendship
grams to pass to their friends.
We used this activity as a
perfect opportunity to have the
older children practice writing
their own name.

Development Department Events: This month has been a
busy time in the events arena as
we prepare for Surf City Splash
on March 9th, the JMG Security
Systems Annual Benefit Golf

October 13th. Splash is well

fundraising committee meeting.
We have another exciting event
that we are just getting started
with. This year, BGCHV will be
hosting the Image Makers regional
contest in late spring. 300-500
pieces of digital photography
created by youth from throughout
the Pacific region will come to our
Club. We will work with community
businesses to display them and
appoint judges to determine
whose artwork will advance to the
national competition. Some of our
own Club members have been
winners over the last few years
and we are excited to have the
opportunity to host this event and
see great artwork kids from other
areas are creating.
Grants: We applied for the
Possible Dream application,
completed invoices/reports for
Golden West College and the City
of Fountain Valley, received the
contract for our OCTA grant that
has enabled the Club to order two
brand new buses, completed
training for administering our OCTA
and OJP grants, activated our OJP
grant, and completed quarterly
reporting for the Orange County
Children & Families Commission.
We are excited to see the
changes to the Twilight Education
Project that are happening as a
result of new grant funding this
year. The program is expanding
and we are now busing to
additional areas of Huntington
Beach and we will soon have bus
service to and from targeted
Fountain Valley neighborhoods as
we strive to reach out more English
Language Learner families. The
Fountain Valley School District has
signed on as a new partner for the
program, which will help us reach
the program the most. The Twilight
Program will also grow to include a
summer session as a result of Pacific
Life Foundation funding.
Marketing: We hope you enjoyed the
beautiful annual report that you
received in the mail last month. The
Development team has also been hard
at work on spring program materials,
new advertisements in the Fountain
Pen, a series of ads for the Orange
County Business Journal promoting all
the Boys & Girls Clubs in Orange
County, and press releases about
awards for dedicated service given at
the annual meeting, Surf City Splash,
and spring break enrollment. We’ve
also updated our annul design/print
calendar so we can plan ahead of
upcoming projects throughout the year.
Our online presence has been updated
too and we are excited to now have the
capacity to do regular web updates.
