How to UseThis Guide

Franklin County is located in South Central Pennsylvania with the county seat being the borough of Chambersburg. Franklin County became an independent jurisdiction in September, 1784, shortly after the end of the American Revolutionary War. It is named in honor of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Franklin County also comprises the Chambersburg–Waynesboro, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Washington–Baltimore–Arlington, DC-MD-VA-WV-PA, Combined Statistical Area. The area lies to a large extent within the Cumberland Valley. Hagerstown is located just south of Franklin County, PA and is the county seat of Washington County, Maryland. Hagerstown anchors the Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, which lies just northwest of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, DC-MD-VA-WV Combined Statistical Area in the heart of the Great Appalachian Valley. Hagerstown is also the chief commercial and industrial hub for a greater Tri-State Area that includes much of Western Maryland as well as significant portions of South Central Pennsylvania and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
