Skne is both remote and accessible.New, bt still familiar. Exciting and

reassring at the same time. And with

    the Eropean continent within easy

reach. What other province boasts more

than 150 natre reserves and three

national parks, offering jorneys of dis-

covery both great and small? Theres

adventre for everyone here. The contrasts create variety and

    excitement. From the wilderness

highlands and the extensive forests to

billowing hills, the sea and wide sandy

beaches in the blink of an eye. A highly

    diverse landscape that stimlates yor

    criosity and yor inner child.

Park the car and get to know natre

on foot or by bicycle on one of the many

trails that criss-cross the whole of Skne.

    Theres ample accommodation along

the rote in gesthoses, hotels, yothhostels and cottages.

    Traditional and inventive

The food traditions in Skne mean yo

    definitely neednt bother packing lnch

or cooking dinner. The nmeros athen-

tic restarants, cafs and inns garantee

that yor visit trns into somethingspecial, far from convenience food and

    ready meals.

Skne also brings yo close to

    cltre. Craftspeople and artists have

open stdios in rral settings. And there

are the poets, writers and, not least, the

filmmakers. Skne has been the setting

for many major Swedish films, among

them Bergmans The Seventh Seal, and

    Astrid Lindgrens Ronja the Robbers

    Daghter and The Brothers Lionheart,

Welcome to the best of both worlds

as well as the Ystad-based InspectorWallander film series.

    Relax and unwind

On yor own, with a gide or with

friends yo can ride, paddle, climb, sail,

play golf, explore caves or dive as the

mood takes yo all year rond! Yo can

even carve down well-prepared pistes onthe northeastern slopes of Hallandssen.

The sea, lakes and streams offer

fishing of all kinds. If yo have a

strong hnting instinct, there are great

opportnities for bagging game, both fr

    and feather.

Wherever yo choose to stay when

yo visit Skne, adventre is jst rond

    the corner.

A TRANquIL TOuR OF SKNEA warm spring morning in late May. Its just after eight, and the long stretches of sandy beaches are deserted. One early-

morning bather is swimming in the still water, and a little further out two kayakers glide past, paddling with a dreamlike

rhythm. The red, elegantly streamlined craft seem to be melting, shimmering like a mirage, into the sea.Theres the tang of seaweed and salt on the warm breeze as we bowl along the waters edge on good, firm sand

towards the fishing village of Vitemlla.

Were on a cycling holiday in Skne, starting at Havng in

sterlen, where we arrived yesterday. Ahead of us lies a weeks

pleasurable pedalling, all the way along the coast to Malm,

staying at youth hostels, guesthouses, hotels and farms. Skepparps-

grden youth hostel in Havng is one of Sknes typically idyllic

places a half-timbered farm in a nature reserve thats enchant-

    ingly, heartachingly beautiful.

We dont have time to do anything more than unload the

cycles from the car before were pedalling towards the undulating

hills of Brsarp. Then we aim for Alunbruket in Andrarum withits coffee house, said to be the oldest in Skne. Visitors have been

able to enjoy a coffee here since 1930. The pleasantly winding

asphalt roads lead through extremely varied scenery, from sweep-

ing heaths with grazing horses to beech forests and countryside

    with stately spruce and pine.

A VISIT TO THE APPLE KINGDOM After our coffee break we

pedal on, past the magnificent Christinehofs Slott (castle), toRavlunda brnneri (distillery), where we briefly wallow in nos-

talgia with a visit to the moped museum. The churchyard in

Ravlunda, also worth a visit, is the resting place of legendary

author Fritiof Nilsson Piraten. The epitaph on his gravestone

means: Below lie the remains of a man who habitually put off

everything until tomorrow. However, he gave this up eventually,

and actually died on 31 Jan 1972.

But now its a new day, and having reached the Vitemlla

strandbackar nature reserve we say farewell to the sea for a while,

and take the main road to Kivik and the Apple Kingdom.

pplets hus (the House of Apples) in Kivik is near Stenshuvud.

After sampling some cider accompanied by delicious snacks we

work our way upwards towards the national park area a long and

gruelling climb that demands great concentration. We then get

to the summit of the mountain on foot. The scent of woodbine

accompanies us through the shady beech forest.

The park alternates between forests, orchid meadows and sandy

heaths. The summit of the ancient rocks is like a bald head. The

vista over eastern Skne really opens out from here on a clear day

    like today.

A CRIME TO RUSH sterlen seems at its most beautiful in theevening. The heat haze bathes the whole landscape in a strange

light as much later we roll south towards our overnight accom-

modation in the fishing village of Brantevik after finding time

to fit in a couple of unscheduled visits to both the gallery and

the pottery. Pedalling at a comfortable speed we pass soft golden-

yellow rape fields, and lush meadows with well-fed cattle thatruminate indolently while staring at us. The farms, with their

whitewashed Skne longhouses, have flowers in their window

boxes, and everything is redolent of a timeless idyll.

Discovering Skne from the saddle of a cycle takes its own

time, and were definitely not in a rush...

RESTFUL AUTUMN WALKS Barely six months later its time tosee the landscape again, this time on foot and starting in the west.

Fleeting mists cover the Kullahalvn peninsula, which this morning

looks as if its merging with the sea here, where the resund and

the Kattegatt meet. Breakfast at the fine old Grand Hotel in Mlle

is leisurely. The summer tourists have long since left, and now the

little coastal community is slowly returning to normal.

MLLE BY THE SEA At the foot of Kullaberg is Mlle, a very wellknown seaside resort at the turn of the last century. Its broad-

minded resort life put the spotlight on Swedish sin far beyond

    the countrys borders.

We are a few enthusiasts who deliberately chose this autum-

nal setting for a long weekend, to enjoy a wonderful combinationof comfortable accommodation, food, walking and culture. Skne

is perhaps at its most beautiful in the autumn, when you have the

countryside beaches, forests and plains almost entirely to your-

self. Theres a good choice of inns and cafs that are open all year,

so its quite safe to leave your packed lunch at home.

BETWEEN SEA AND SKY Todays about Kullaberg, one of morethan 150 nature reserves in Skne, whose majestic gneiss cliffs

rise almost 70 metres straight out of the sea. Were carrying

light packs with a map and guidebook. The path winds its way

through the dense beech forest, whose leaves are now changing

colour slowly to russet and gold. The path eventually leads past

the golf course, with perhaps the best view in Sweden, and up to

Kullen lighthouse. Despite the grey weather, several golfers are

out, totally absorbed by the little white ball. Theres been a beacon

on Kullaberg for centuries, and the brightest lighthouse lamps in

Sweden still flash there, day and night.

A wonderful combination ofcomfortable accomodation, food, walking and culture

    F E A T u R E

We meet two enthusiastic rock-climbers on the way down intoone of the deep ravines, and a little further on catch a glimpse of

a solitary angler on a rocky ledge, his long spinning rod held in

one hand. Its easy to spend hours by the lighthouse, just being.

    Listening to the sea. Meditating.

By now the sun has begun to gradually disperse the veils

of mist, and the contours of the landscape emerge. Somewhere

far below, where waves break against the steep cliffs, is Nimis,

the controversial artwork constructed from thousands of pieces

of flotsam and jetsam by artist Lars Vilks. But we cant make it

down there today. On our way back we see some divers entering

the water from a small boat. The wildlife underwater is said to besomething quite special out there, and theres even a nature trail

beneath the surface for divers with experience and curiosity.

GOURMET SKNE ALONG THE SKNELEDEN Skne is ideal forrelaxed walking. The province has a good network of way-marked

trails, and all the by-ways seem to be just made for long, leisurely

walks. Next morning we continue by hire car to Genarp and

Hckeberga on the Romelesen ridge to continue our walk alongthe Skneleden. Our starting point is Hckeberga Wrdshus, where

weve also booked accommodation. The restaurant is included in

the Culinary Skne programme with almost 30 others that enthu-

siastically sustain Sknes culinary culture. With this evenings

five-course menu in mind, we have a spring in our steps as we

    head for The Lodge.

Our journey of adventure through Skne continues.

Tomorrow we head northwards for a day with the Icelandic horses

at Wisseltofta farm, outside Osby wild Viking-style riding in

    the deep forests.

Cenneth Sparby, former inhabitant of Vsterbotten (northern Sweden), travel editorand cookery book athor and now a freelance writer relishes constant movement. He describes with particlar affection destinations and sights where mscle-power isessential. Cenneth walks, cycles, skis, inlines and kayaks to get closer to new environ-ments and people. He has a particlar preference for Skne, a province he constantlyretrns to in his travels and featre stories.

Thrilling riding and tranquil treksMany people think Skne is at its most beautiful from a little above head height:

riding a horse along mossy paths, through a dense spruce forest, turning off at aluxuriant long valley, galloping over meadows or sandy beaches.

This is a typical trek in Skne.

    RIDING

DID YOU KNOW that Skne is famos for its top-

ality horse breeding, not least Arabian thorogh-

breds? Kllatorp, near Skrp, is one of Swedens

oldest Arabian std farms, with a history datingback to the 1100s. In addition to breeding horses,

Blommerds Arabstteri otside Hr also holds

annal meetings at its racecorse. The horse is a friend that can help you get close to nature in Skne

there are plenty of places for open-air swimming. One

example is Bjerreds Kallbadhs, with Swedens longestsea-bathing pier, which extends 574 metres ot into

Skne is perhaps most famos for its

    long, gently shelving, child-friendly

    Experience water in different ways

Skne is srronded by water on three

right of access to the contryside? This privilege,

nknown in many other contries, is called allemans-

rtt and is the legal right of access to open contry

and private land. However, this mst not infringe on

other peoples rights. It reires responsibility and

good jdgement. Yo mst not damage the contry-

side or wildlife, and yo mst be considerate to

landowners and other people in the contryside. The keywords are: do not distrb, do not destroy.

Yo can find more information at

The landscape of Skne offers more thanjst variety. The contryside is also easily

accessible thanks to many new way-

marked trails, well-sited picnic areas and

    viewpoints. There are great opportnities

to relax and nwind from city life.

    Impressive Skneleden

One of the most beatifl trails is theSkneleden, which consists of 1000 ki-

    lometres of way-marked long-distance

trails from coast to coast and from north

to soth. Yo can go from the ndlating

hills of eastern Skne throgh the bea-

tiflly forested northeast, via the pillared

halls of the beech forests, to the dramatic

    rocky coasts in the northwest.

    The Skneleden offers two types

of settings for walking. Yo can stay

    closer to civilisation among contry

villages, where cosy cafs offer delicios

sstenance, or along the coast, where

pretty fishing hamlets are waiting to

feed yo. Or yo can go where thewilderness and yor proximity to natre

    are more obvios. Whichever yor

choice, there are ample campsites andshelters where yo can get some well-

    earned rest.

    Accessibility for all

There are plenty of interesting shorter

otings in the contryside that start from

a car, bs or train and retrn to the same

place. The advantage of Skne is thatyore never far from civilisation, even

when yore in the middle of the forest.

Skne has over 150 natre reserves

    with footpaths, jogging tracks, barbeces

    and bathing places. Many cottages,

fishing jetties and footpaths have been

made accessible to the disabled. The

    newly opened Flltofta natre centre

on Ringsjn lake at the heart of Skne,

is a fine example. The area is an ancient

    cltral landscape with stone walls,

field enclosres and massive oaks. Its

forests are home to ancient monments,

    cltral relics and refreshing springs.
