The morning after a night of protest in downtown Nashville, Matt Stell snuck into the Fleet Street Pub in the city’s Printer’s Alley, occupying the space for 12 hours as he portrayed 13 dif-ferent characters for the video to “If I Was a Bar.”

It’s also a victory over creative limitations, given that social-distancing practices related to the coronavirus forced him to do the shoot as the lone on-camera actor, captured by a skeletal three-person crew.

“My mind was geared on ‘What can I do without bar extras or all these different patrons we’d have, including a bartender?’ ” says video director Dustin Haney. “I had pretty much nobody to work with, so I kind of took that from there and went, ‘Well, what if I just use Matt a bunch of times over?’ ”

The clip is just one of numerous examples of directors and producers finding ways to flex their creative muscle amid re-strictions imposed by COVID-19. Danielle Bradbery took a sexy walk through a lonely field for her “Never Have I Ever”

video. Cole Swindell did a herky-jerky version of the moon-walk in a NASA-themed shirt during the “Single Saturday Night” video. And Kane Brown shot appearances on two NBC shows — The Voice and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon —

o n t h e s a m e d a y, using a green screen to make “Cool Again” look different on both programs.

“ T h e v i r u s h a s definitely made mak-ing videos more diffi-cult,” says Brown. “In the past when we had the opportunity to tape a per formance like The Voice, we would fly to L.A. and record

in front of an audience with all of the show production. Now we have to figure it out ourselves and try to still make it look good.”

And they have to make it safe, too. Record labels and video production companies have all established guidelines for on-set behaviors. Crews are kept small to make social distanc-ing easier; masks are required, except for actors while they are being filmed; the production sites are scrubbed in advance of the shoot; hand sanitizer is plentiful; and all foods are boxed and individually wrapped, eliminating the buffet setup that was previously standard for a shoot.

during the COVID era, forcing producers to hire from a smaller talent pool. The work, however, is fairly plentiful. With concerts on hold for the fore-

seeable future, video is increasingly important as a vehicle for exposure. Both official and lyric videos, as well as TV and concert performances, are in larger demand, and since the crews are smaller, the productions generally cost less, allowing labels and artists to finance more shoots.

But the creators are doing their best to heighten the quality, and variety, of the productions. The industry initially responded to self-isolation with a pa-rade of live, at-home Facebook and Instagram events. Those attempts quickly lost their novelty, and video pros made inventive adjustments within the pan-demic’s limitations, such as the split-screen effects director Haney employed in Stell’s “If I Was a Bar.”

“Dustin came up with that cool idea,” explains Stell. “Necessity is the mother of invention. Figur-ing out the way that we could do something fun and creative within this space, sometimes it does almost help to have some boundaries to push against.”

To facilitate the collection and rollout of the vid-eos, labels have made adjustments, too. At Big Ma-chine Label Group, creative content/asset manager Seth Hellman developed three simple video kits, each of which includes an iPhone with dual-camera technology, a high-grade microphone, a tripod, in-structions and return packaging. The label sends a kit to an artist, who can easily create the content and ship the kit back to the label, where the phone is sterilized and the materials are downloaded and distributed.

Even when the business returns to some level of normalcy, the video kits are likely to remain a part of the BMLG creative department’s practices.

“Especially with some of our artists that don’t live here in Nashville, it’s not easy to have them just, you know, ‘Hey, hop on over here tomorrow at four; we need some liners from you,’ or ‘We need just a little bit of content,’ ” notes senior vp creative Sandi Spika Borchetta. “Almost all of them actu-ally are really savvy with capturing things on their own phone. So this is a step above that.”

Given the current explosion in COVID-19 cases and the likelihood that a vaccine will not be avail-able until 2021, smaller video productions might be the only realistic alter-native for another year or so. BMLG employees and artists are flying rarely, if at all, for safety reasons, so most videos are made near the act’s locale. The lone exception so far is Bradbery’s “Never Have I Ever” clip. Since her home is a three-hour drive from Austin, she met director Peter Zavadil there and purposely conducted the shoot outdoors, which is currently considered to be a safer environment than an indoor site.

“It was a very, very small, stealth crew,” says Borchetta. “They shot an interview with her, we got liners, they shot footage for the music video, and everybody was masked up. They had gloves on, they stayed far apart, and it was very isolated.”

While the video pros are finding ways to work around COVID, it becomes more difficult with each shoot to find new, cre-ative ways to react to the pandemic.

“The videos are more cost-effective, and that’s great for the short term,” says Brown’s video director, Alex Alvga. “However, we can’t do performances like this indefinitely. I don’t think I’m speaking just for myself, but I do look forward to a time when we can get back to fuller performances.”

Even when that time arrives, the coronavirus era will likely leave a mark because it’s forcing cre-ative adjustments and imprinting memories on the participants.

“As different as it was, I’ll never forget it,” says Swindell of the green-screen production behind “Single Saturday Night.” “I’ll probably never shoot another video like it.”

Kenny Chesney’s “Here and Now” (Blue Chair/Warner Music Nashville/WMN) ascends 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart dated July 4. In the week ending June 28, the song’s audience impressions increased by 18% to 29.8 million, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

The song is Chesney’s record-extending 31st leader. Dating to the list’s January 1990 launch, Tim McGraw ranks second with 29 No. 1s, Blake Shel-ton places third with 27, and Alan Jackson and George Strait follow with 26 apiece.

“I remember cutting ‘Here and Now’ and how great it felt,” Chesney tells Billboard. “But I also hoped it might re-mind really busy people what matters is: Be in the moment. I always try to cut songs that lift people up or say something about how we live because music can speak to those things without preaching.

“For this song to be my 31st No. 1,” he continues, “it tells me to keep pushing, to keep trying to speak to people and create dialogues about what matters through my music. To me, when a song comes out of the radio that makes you smile and helps you live your life in the moment, what could be better?”

“Here and Now” — written by David Garcia, David Lee Murphy and Craig Wiseman — is the second single from Chesney’s same-named LP, which debuted at the peak of Top Country Albums, as well as the all-genre Billboard 200 dated May 16 with 233,000 equivalent album units. First track “Tip of My Tongue” peaked at No. 8 on Country Airplay in December 2019, the 56th of his 57 top 10s.

Chesney rules Country Airplay for the first time since “Get Along” led for two frames in July 2018. He began his run of 31 No. 1s with his ninth of 91 chart entries (second only to Strait’s 100), “She’s Got It All,” which dominated for three weeks beginning in August 1997.

CHART RICHES Gabby Barrett’s first LP, Goldmine (Warner Music Nashville/WMN), flies in at No. 4 on Top Country Albums. It starts with 20,000 units in the week ending June 25. It earned 15.98 million on-demand streams for its songs in the tracking week, the largest opening streaming week ever for a debut

country album by a woman. The sum also marks the biggest opening stream-ing week for a debut country set in 2020 and the third-largest debut stream-ing frame for any such album this year (after Sam Hunt’s Southside, with 36.8 million, and Kelsea Ballerini’s Kelsea, with 16.7 million).

The 13-track set includes 12 songs co-authored by the 20-year-old Barrett, who finished in third place on ABC’s American Idol in 2018. First single “I Hope,”

which led Country Airplay in April, was the first career-opening No. 1 by a woman since Carly Pearce’s “Every Little Thing,” which reigned in November 2017.

On the airplay-, streaming- and sales-powered Hot Country Songs chart, “I Hope” holds at its No. 2 high. It leads Country Streaming Songs for a 12th week, with 13.5 million U.S. streams (up 15%). On Country Digital Song Sales, it lifts 5-3 (7,000 sold, up 7%).

Goldmine’s sophomore single, “The Good Ones,” pushes 59-56 on Country Airplay (1.1 million, up 34%).

NEW TOP 10s Chris Janson earns his fifth Country Air-play top 10 and fourth in succession as “Done” (Warner Music Nashville/WAR) bumps 12-7 (20.4 million, up 23%). It follows “Good Vibes,” which became his first leader in October 2019.

“One Big Country Song” (Wheelhouse) by LOCASH — the duo of Chris Lucas and Preston Brust — climbs 11-9 (20.2 million, up 12%). It’s the pair’s third top 10 and first since its lone No. 1, “I Know Somebody,” led in October 2016. “Song” hits the region in its 59th week, breaking the record for the longest trip to the tier. It passes Travis Denning’s “After a Few,” which reached the top 10 in its 57th frame (April 18); then Scotty McCreery’s “In Between” entered it in its 56th week (May 9). Both songs hit No. 1, leading the lists dated June 13 and 27, respectively.

Plus, Maddie & Tae (Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye) achieve their first Coun-try Airplay top 10 since 2015 as “Die From a Broken Heart” (Mercury) jumps 16-10 (18.9 million, up 24%). The duo lands its third top 10 after “Fly,” which reached No. 9 in September 2015, and debut hit “Girl in a Country Song,” which led for a week in December 2014.

Country Airplay AIRPLAY MONITORED BY

RANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen Music. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Nielsen Audio- copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2020, Nielsen Audio). The list of all Country Airplay chart reporters can be viewed on Nielsen Music’s platforms.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in

audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they

are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen Music) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCEMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay lists the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

LIVE SHOWS ARE A VIRAL FLOP“Who is Chase Rice, and why is he killing his fans?”

Honolulu photographer Jade Moon’s Facebook post, linking to a Stereogum.com story about a packed concert, was just one example of the negative public-ity created by live shows featuring Rice in Tennessee and Chris Janson in Filer, Idaho, on June 27. Both dates yielded photos of crowds that ignored coronavirus safety measures, such as face masks and prudent social distancing, and both artists took down images from their own social media accounts in the aftermath.

Janson said in a statement that producers of Idaho’s Hwy 30 Music Fest “assured all performers and concert attendees they were safe and following all local guidelines.”

Koe Wetzel, Jack Ingram, Sam Riggs and Ray Wylie Hubbard also were scheduled for the festival, though Janson received the biggest push-back for appearing.

Rice issued a statement, noting that he has a drive-in show booked, but otherwise advocated for following preventive guidelines: “The safer we are now, the quicker we get to actual normal live shows, which I know we all want.”

The Brushy Mountain Group cut capacity at its Tennessee venue from 10,000 people to 4,000, though less than 1,000 purportedly attended. Temperatures were taken before patrons entered, plenty of hand sanitizer was available, and social distancing was encouraged, though apparently fans disregarded it.

The show was the first in a summer series, but Brushy Mountain Group vp Brian May told Billboard that the remainder of the dates are being reevaluated.

Artists and promoters alike will assuredly reference the feedback from these concerts — as well as legal entanglements if any ticket holders later test posi-tive for COVID-19 — as they assess future decisions about when, and under what conditions, it is safe to return to traditional live stages.

At a time when patriotism is being tested, the Fourth of July brings some hope that a divided country can unify for at least 24 hours. Country acts are in-volved in numerous Independence Day events. Trace Adkins and Lauren Alaina will take part in PBS’ A Capitol Fourth; Luke Bryan, Maren Morris and Brad Paisley are on deck for NBC’s Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spec-tacular; and Pat Green, Josh Turner, Lyle Lovett and Hunter Hayes play Houston’s annual Freedom Over Texas, which will air across the Lone Star State this year. Lee Greenwood has a new version of “God Bless the U.S.A.” due July 1 with Home Free and the United States Air Force Band, and he will join the Oak Ridge Boys on a July 3 TBN special. Ad-ditionally, look for the Oaks, Sara Evans and Mark Wills when the Grand Ole Opry lands on the holiday. To top it off, Willie Nelson’s annual Fourth of July Picnic will be staged this year as a virtual concert.

Two of country’s brightest new females have albums on the way this summer. Lindsay Ell’s heart theory and Caylee Hammack’s debut, If It Wasn’t for You, are both due Aug. 14. Meanwhile, a deep Johnny Cash box set, The Complete Mercury Recordings 1986-1991, was just released on seven discs. And Skip Ewing, who has been in veritable seclusion for the last 20 years, will return with a 12-song project, Wyoming, on Aug. 21.

Garth Brooks has a penchant for talking about “the old stuff” when he plays live, and his June 27 concert had an old-time feel when it was beamed to revived drive-ins across the United States. Produced by Encore Live, the show alleg-edly reached 350,000 people, who saw the G man through steamy windows without the hassle of leaving their cars. He has, meanwhile, moved a Cincinnati stadium show from Oct. 1 to May 1, 2021, thanks to coronavirus concerns.

A number of familiar names were prevalent on the list of nominees for the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, announced June 26. Fid-dler Michael Cleveland appears nine times among the finalists, while Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver slid onto the ballot in six different places. The awards ceremony, slated for Oct. 1, also will add three new members to the IBMA Hall of Fame: Station Inn owner J.T. Gray, The Johnson Mountain Boys and “Calling Baton Rouge” originators New Grass Revival.

COUNTRY PRODUCERSTMCOUNTRY SONGWRITERSTM

The weekly Country Songwriters and Country Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Country Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

All data measures U.S. activity as of the week ending June 25, 2020. All units counts are rounded to the nearest thousand. Album consumption units — also known as albums plus TEA plus SEA — consists of album sales; track-equivalent album (TEA) sales whereby 10 tracks equal one consumption unit; and stream equivalent albums (SEA) whereby 1,250 paid and/or 3,750 ad-supported audio on-demand streams (OAD) equal one consumption unit. Nielsen Music/MRC Data has reprocessed year-to-date figures to account for a change in methodology, resulting in a restatement in streaming data from a provider, which has resulted in a shift in some previously reported data, most notably for video streams.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 29, 2020 | PAGE 15 OF 18

Given that the genre is known as country music, it’s only natural that the idiom spends plenty of time mining the advantages — and sometimes the disadvan-tages — of life in a small community where everybody knows your business.

Naturally, one of the ways to do that is through a juxtaposition with a metropolis, and country has frequently mined that idea, particularly by exploring relationships that find one participant pining away in their hometown while the other chases bright lights. It’s embedded in the stories of Ronnie Milsap’s “Smok y Mountain Rain,” Tucker Beathard’s “Rock On,” David Frizzell & Shelly West’s “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” and a pair of Don Williams titles: “Tulsa Time” and “If Hollywood Don’t Need You.”

It’s also at the heart of Morgan Wallen’s new single, “More Than My Hometown,” a snapshot of a man valiantly attempting to offer support to his woman at the very moment she’s prepped to drive off for Los Angeles. It’s a statement about geography, but it’s also a song that Wallen sees as a symbol of deeper traits.

“For me, it was like a way of saying, you know, ‘I love you, but I have to be my-self and I’m never really going to change that,’ ” he notes. “ ‘My Hometown’ is just kind of a way of saying that I’m going to stick to me and I’m going to be true to what I’m doing. If that doesn’t necessarily go with what everybody else around you is doing, that’s OK.”

Hailing from tiny Sneedville, Tenn., Wallen penned “More Than My Home-town” in Nashville during 2018 with three creatives from other Southern lo-cations: Philadelphia, Miss., native HARDY (“One Beer,” “God’s Country”); Atlanta-derived songwriter-producer Charlie Handsome (Post Malone, Breland); and Music City-born Ernest (“I Love My Country,” “Heartless”). HARDY brought the title to the writing session, and even though he is happy that he relocated in Tennessee, he knew the sentiment firsthand.

“I just think about how hard it was for me to leave and some of the sacri-fices I had to make,” he reflects. “They’re all pleasure or leisure sacrifices, stuff like fishing every day and seeing the people that you grew up with and you love every day, but I knew how hard that was.”

Handsome offered a tight guitar riff for a musical foundation, and they set off on a piece that contrasts tough emotions with a tempo that has as much drive as the car in the song. “More Than My Hometown” is essentially a por-trait of loneliness with a backbeat.

“Man, that’s a great description,” says Ernest, “and ain’t that country music.”The opening bars establish an ultra-country, small-town scenario: The

couple’s mothers are best friends and their high school class expected them to form a long-lasting relationship with local roots, but the woman’s “big-dream bags are all packed up and ready to go.”

It flows from there into a smooth, crisp chorus where the singer counts the ways that he loves her: “More than a California sunset” leads the metaphor parade, which reaches its high points with “More than the feelin’ when the bass hits a hook/When the guy gets the girl at the end of the book.”

“Those two lines were all Morgan,” says HARDY. “He threw that out just like it was nothing. That chorus, man; I love what it says, and I love the

youthfulness in it. And I love that it sounds like people that really grew up doing that stuff — you know, [are] truly in love with it.”

So in love with it, in fact, that the protagonist still says goodbye at the close of the stanza, choosing the lifestyle he knows over the uncertainty of love in an unfamiliar city: “I can’t love you more than my hometown.”

The second verse further examines metropolitan problems: “City sky ain’t the same black,” a reference to street lights blocking out the stars, and the “map-dot shame” (a HARDY phrase) that they can’t work their different dreams out.

“I’m pretty sure I almost f lipped the table over because ‘map-dot shame’ is about the most stupid, awesome thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” declares Ernest. “I remember cussing profusely, yelling out the window of my room at Big Loud, say-ing, ‘Ain’t it a map-dot shame ain’t nobody on Music Row writing this damn song.’ ”

A bridge gave them more space to inject yet another country-vs.-city comparison: “I need a house on a hill, girl, not in ’em.”

“Obviously, the end is talking about Beverly Hills,” says Wallen. “That’s just the contrast that we came up with, and we felt that painted a pretty obvious picture.”

They worked up a demo before the session was over, throwing some “ooh” harmonies underneath much of the song with those extra layers creating an Eagles-like smoothness. It was obvious even that day where “More Than My Hometown” was headed.

“I’m pretty sure Morgan had it on hold by the time we were done,” says Ernest.

It was another 18 months before Wallen recorded the final version with producer Joey Moi (Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen) at Nashville’s Ocean Way in early 2020. Acoustic guitarist Bryan Sutton and electric guitarist Tom Bukovac replayed the foundational hook, while drummer Jerry Roe provided the relentless backbeat. Moi cut back on the “ooh” harmonies to create a little more variance in the song’s flow.

“All of the parts were happening at the same time,” says Moi of the demo. “Basically, I just needed to kind of take the chunks of stuff that they already had and create dynamics on it.”

Originally, Big Loud had planned to release the acerbic midtempo “This Bar” as a single, but Wallen thought it made sense to release a little extra music for fans to take in during coronavirus-related self-isolation. The response to “More Than My Hometown” made it a priority. Though its big-city/small-town breakup was once a familiar plot, it’s no longer an everyday theme in the genre.

“It’s a different kind of topic for country and the radio,” says Moi.“Hometown” was shipped to country radio via PlayMPE on May 27,

and it scoots to No. 35 in its f ifth charted week on the Country Airplay list dated July 4, capturing a widely held attitude with its commitment to territorial roots.

“Coming from the country, there’s just something about it,” says Wal-len. “It’s not like you hate on people from the city or you even hate the city yourself, but there’s something about home and there’s something about the people there. There’s something about it all that kind of just makes you not want to leave.”
