iHeartMedia’s syndicated morning country host Bobby Bones got snarky when the 57th annual Grammy Awards launched the CBS telecast with a classic-rock act on Feb. 9.

Country UPDATE

film,” said Raymond in his acceptance speech. “It’s life-changing in every way for everybody that has Alzheimer’s.”

In absentia, Carrie Underwood swiped best country solo performance with “Something in the Water,” a big-voiced song about spiritual transformation.

Lambert, who shared a nomination with Underwood for “Somethin’ Bad,” held down one of three live country slots on the telecast with “Little Red Wagon,” a high-energy number from Platinum. Following previous nomina-tions for Revolution and Four the Record, Platinum marks the first country album Grammy for Lambert, who was appreciative of what the honor represents.

“It’s moving people,” she said backstage. “That’s why we make music: to move people.”

Moving them to action — or, at the least, demonstrating solidarity — was at the center of many pieces in the Grammy TV puzzle. Performances in the show’s waning minutes by Beyoncé and John Legend represented battles against oppression and racism. Eric Church used video footage of street violence to reimagine “Give Me Back My Hometown” as a title about reclaiming communities for the general populace from America to the Mid-dle East and Africa. And the Recording Academy announced the formation of the Musicians Creators Alliance, an effort to fight for just compensation for artists in a transitional era. Lady Antebellum is the first country act to sign on, along with such artists as Steven Tyler, Jennifer Hudson and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.

Country enjoyed one additional performance during the telecast. Double nominee Brandy Clark delivered a spare reading of “Hold My Hand,” a tra-ditional country ballad that dissects a jealous streak that arises when a couple has a chance encounter with the man’s ex. Clark’s clear tones were enhanced by Dwight Yoakam’s stylized mountain-tinted resonance, with the duet serv-ing as one of the show’s highlights.

Country and folk pioneers were represented in other awards and during the commercials, too. Old Crow Medicine Show picked up best folk album for Remedy, with frontman Ketch Secor thanking “Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie for lighting the way” in the pre-telecast. The self-titled debut by The Earls of Leicester, a Jerry Douglas-led all-star band that covered titles as-sociated with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, took best bluegrass album. Plus, an Omnivore collection of once-lost Hank Williams radio shows, The Garden Spot Programs, 1950, garnered best historical album.

In between segments, Roger Miller could be heard in a new Android spot, and the craggy, latter-day voice of Johnny Cash singing “You Are My Sun-shine” was part of a Whirlpool ad that also featured Hayes. New Jersey resi-dent Alex Bell appeared in the ad after winning a national contest, honoring a relative who is suffering from dementia.

“She stopped remembering who I was, but when I sang her this song, she knew me,” noted Bell in a series of placards. “I love you, Mommom.”

That commercial indirectly underscored the message in I’ll Be Me. While re-search is still being conducted on the subject, music seems to have a powerful effect on Alzheimer’s patients, as has been evidenced in Campbell’s struggle. It’s part

of what makes the Grammy mission of rewarding creative excellence important.“Music, I really believe, kept him healthy for a longer period of time and

enabled him to enjoy his life and his family, even in the midst of living with a debilitating brain disease,” wife Kim Campbell told the industry audience during the pre-telecast. “I thank the academy for honoring him with this award. In honoring him, you are shining a light on his quest to make a difference.”

True to Bones’ AC/DC lament, numerous acts that have passed their com-mercial peaks paraded across the Grammy stage. Among them were Paul Mc-Cartney, Annie Lennox, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Madonna and Jeff Lynne.

Many heritage artists, like Campbell, are fighting the good fight. Others, like Rosanne Cash, are discovering they have more to share in their later years. Grammy voters were willing to recognize their contributions.

“Ray Charles said that you’re a better singer at 50 than you are at 30 because your whole life shows up in your voice,” noted Cash in her third acceptance speech. “I just have to second the wise words of Ray Charles.”

COUNTRY RATES ON THE POWER 100Seven executives who work either primarily or exclusively in country music landed on the annual Power 100 list in Billboard’s Feb. 14 issue: three Nashville label heads, two concert professionals and a pair of managers.

He backed Buddy Holly on such recordings as “Peggy Sue” and “Maybe Baby.” Ironically, he died on the anniversary of Holly’s 1959 funeral.

GOOD WORKSThey may be performing good works by appearing, but some of the musical works they offer may not be so good.

Five Nashville songwriters are set for the inaugural First and the Worst charity event, an April 1 show at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville in which each writer will perform the first song they wrote — and their lowest-quality cre-ation. The night raises money for the Music Health Alliance, which provides healthcare opportunities to members of the music community.

Luke Bryan claims a second week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay tally with “I See You” (Capitol Nashville), the seventh of his 11 overall lead-ers to rule for more than a week. He last reigned for multiple frames (and scored his longest chart-topping run) when “Play it Again” started a four-week stand atop the May 31, 2014 list. “See” drew 47.9 million audience impres-sions (down 1 percent) during the tracking week ending Feb. 8, according to Nielsen Music, commanding a sizeable lead (4.8 million) over the No. 2 title, Florida Georgia Line’s “Sun Daze” (Republic Nashville), which rises a spot (43.1 million, up 1 percent).

Top local audience reach for “See” during the chart’s tracking week: WUSN Chicago (1.2 million impressions), KKBQ Houston (1.1 million), WKLB Boston (1 million), KKGO Los Angeles (1 million) and KEEY Minneapolis (960,000).

“See” also spends a second week atop the Country Indicator survey, Bryan’s eighth No. 1 on the chart (all of which have posted multiple weeks at the summit).

Darius Rucker cracks the Country Airplay top 10 for the first time in 14 months with “Homegrown Honey” (Capitol Nashville), which improves 11-10 in its 26th chart week to become his ninth top 10. He last reached the upper region with “Radio,” which peaked at No. 4 on Dec. 28, 2013. “Honey” is the lead single from Rucker’s fourth country album, Southern Style, due March 31.

Zac Brown Band nabs the Most Increased Audience tro-phy on Country Airplay for a second straight week, as “Home-grown” (Varvatos/Republic/Southern Ground/Big Machine Label Group) jumps 19-14 with a 26 percent gain to 22.5 million impressions in its fourth chart week. That’s the fewest weeks for

The songwriters on the bill are Richard Leigh (“Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” The Greatest Man I Never Knew”), Liz Rose (“You Belong With Me,” “God Made Girls”), Phil Barton (“A Woman Like You”), Roxie Dean (“When I Think About Angels,” “Why They Call It Falling”) and Wynn Varble (“A Little More Country Than That,” “Waitin’ On a Woman”).

For more info, reach Music Health Alliance director of operations Shelia Shipley Biddy here.

TWEET OF THE WEEK“American Kids” songwriter Shane McAnally (@shanemcanally) made the most of his night at the Grammys:

any title in the Country Airplay chart’s upper half. However, Tim McGraw’s “Diamond Rings and Old Barstools” (McGraw/Big Machine) (with Cath-erine Dunn) rises 36-33 in its third week, adding Breaker status (awarded to songs that achieve at least one play at 70 percent of the reporting panel for the first time). It also earns Most Added honors on Country Indicator (21 adds), where it rises 32-28.

Kenny Chesney draws Most Added applause on Country Airplay and flies 49-36 with “Wild Child” (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) (with Grace Potter), registering at least seven first-time plays (Monday-Sunday) at 40 re-porters. The song is also one of five Breaker titles on this week’s chart (dated Feb. 21), a list that includes McGraw’s “Rings,” Brad Paisley’s “Crushin’ It” (Arista Nashville) (44-38), Kip Moore’s “I’m to Blame” (MCA Nashville) (46-39) and Chase Rice’s “Gonna Wanna Tonight” (Dack Janiels/Columbia Nashville) (stationary at No. 47).

While her previous single “Something in the Water” (19/Arista Nashville) tumbles 8-15 following a No. 3 peak on the Feb. 7 Country Airplay list, Carrie Underwood snares the Hot Shot Debut at No. 52 (982,000 in audience) with “Little Toy Guns,” the second previously unreleased song from her Greatest Hits: Decade #1 collection. It also opens at No. 53 on Country Indi-cator. Its video debuted exclusively on Facebook on Jan. 30; its first full week of streams should help elevate the song on the Feb. 21 Hot Country Songs chart after it re-entered on the Feb. 14 chart at No. 30. MUSIC NOTESNashville’s temperature is expected to top out at 30 degrees on Feb. 12, but a big plastic tent will hopefully help keep things appropriately warm as Sports Illustrated sets up a Swimville stage downtown this week for free con-certs celebrating the magazine’s annual swimsuit issue. Pieces of the two-day festival Feb. 11-12 will be featured on numerous Time Inc. websites. Half of the 12 acts that are appearing are being marketed to country: Chris Young, A Thousand Horses, Will Hoge, Holly Williams, Nikki Lane and Chris Stapleton.

Why does Camden, N.J., matter in country music? Well, for starters, some of the genre’s semi-nal recordings — including Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel No. 1 (T for Texas)” and The Carter Family’s “Keep on the Sunny Side” — were re-corded in the city’s Victor Studio. Camden mat-ters this spring because the Susquehanna Bank Center that’s just eight blocks from the old Victor site is the launching pad for Brad Paisley’s Crushin’ It World Tour on May 15. Opening acts on the bill are Justin Moore and Mickey Guyton.

Hot off her Feb. 8 performance on the Grammy Awards, Brandy Clark has Sept. 2 set aside on her calendar. It’s the date that Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical has its first performance in a five-week run at the Dallas Theater Center. Clark and songwriter Shane McAnally (“Downtown,” “Take Your Time”) wrote the score.

The Academy of Countr y Music is central to the next edition in the Now series of compilations as a double-disc package, Now That’s What I Call ACM Awards 50 Years, arrives March 31. The set includes Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind,” Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” and George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” plus tracks from Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, The Judds and Faith Hill, among others. All proceeds benefit the academy’s charity ACM Lifting Lives.

Country Indicator

CHART LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 146 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 102 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20

weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
