When Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook posted a thumbs-up photo from the recovery room of a Boston hospital in June, he put on a brave face. But inside, he was struggling with anxiety, as he had been for months.

Westbrook had developed a polyp on his vocal cords that was no more than a millimeter in size. Dr. Steven M. Zei-tels — a surgeon who has helped the likes of Sam Smith, Adele and Ste-ven Tyler — was enlisted to extract the growth, making tiny incisions on a lump that had huge repercussions. The slightest mistake could’ve destroyed Westbrook’s career and left the cre-ative futures of his bandmates, crew and business partners in doubt.

“Your vocal cords are covered in this membrane that literally looks like Saran Wrap,” Westbrook says. “The thing is, if you go too far in that sur-gery and damage any of that, there’s no coming back from it. It’s a high-risk surgery, but with him and his skill level, it’s not so high risk because he is so talented.”

Westbrook’s recovery went well. On Aug. 22, nearly two months to the date after his surgery, Little Big Town returned to the stage during the Eastbound Hoedown in Newfoundland. He was ecstatic about the way his voice responded, and it gave the band a sense of relief.

Postponements and cancellations over vocal problems are just common enough that the average fan — perhaps even the average music-industry employee — gives little thought to the

emotional drama behind it. A singer relies disproportionately on one body part — the throat — to earn a living the same way that a baseball pitcher counts on an arm or a marathon run-ner leans on the ankles.

decibels than in previous decades, and the genre’s popularity means more artists than ever before are playing in large environments — such as arenas and stadiums — that require bigger sound.

“That is definitely a factor,” says Westbrook’s new vocal coach Diane Sheets, whose clients have included Diamond Rio and Christian artists Natalie Grant and Jason Crabb. “There’s rumbling in your body; you feel the intensity of the sound.”

Even though sound systems are capable of delivering the voice at the proper level for the entire venue, artists may feel a psychological need to strain to reach the required decibel peak. Artists are particularly susceptible in the early years of their career, as many are performing more frequently. They’re also likely to develop habits that could become exacerbated in time.

In Westbrook’s case, the polyp likely grew over several years. He didn’t know it existed, and had unknowingly adapted to it until the growth finally got his attention.

“The brain is so powerful that even when you have an injury and a mass that is developed on your vocal cords, your brain figures out how to work around it,” he says. “I realized my texture had changed over the years, but I didn’t really think it was because of something like that.”

Westbrook, of course, is not alone. Other country acts who’ve had vocal sur-gery include Kenny Rogers, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, Heidi Newfield, Lauren Alaina and Gary Allan, who had other band members hit the high notes on his behalf during concerts at the height of his vocal strain.

“I had lost my falsetto,” Allan says. “Things where it really hurt me were like ‘Smoke Rings in the Dark.’ Like on the second song in, my vocal cords would fail and I had all mid-voice. I had none of that falsetto.”

Keith Urban, who had vocal surgery in November 2012, offered encourage-ment to Westbrook. That was particularly meaningful because Urban could point to positive results: His post-treatment range and tone had improved significantly, and that in turn upped his game when he recorded his current album, Fuse.

“It’s a new voice in so many ways,” Urban says. “Subconsciously that gave me a lot of confidence to then go out and try a lot of different things.”

Sheets has encountered a bit of a stigma about vocal coaches, though she thinks it’s a misguided attitude.

“A singer is very much like an athlete,” she says. “Athletes work with train-ers for the whole life of their career, because of the importance of making sure that you’re performing at your peak and that you’re mitigating some of the risk for injury.”

Post-surgery, Westbrook certainly brings a different viewpoint to vocal maintenance. Bringing an entire organization to a halt was gut-wrenching, and he would prefer to avoid doing that again.

“Being the one that had to make the train stop was a heavy emotional part of the decision,” he says. “But there was no other option for me. It was going to keep getting worse if I didn’t take care of it.”

Preventing a recurrence? That definitely gets a thumbs-up.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2015 | PAGE 4 OF 19

Carrie Underwood’s “Smoke Break” (19/Arista Nashville) leaps 36-5 on Bill-board’s Hot Country Songs chart (dated Sept. 12). The first single from her fifth studio album, Storyteller (Oct. 23), is her 22nd top 10 on the survey, a total that encompasses all of her (non-seasonal) singles promoted to country radio. “Smoke” debuts on Country Digital Songs at No. 1 with 56,000 sold in the week ending Aug. 27, according to Nielsen Music. It’s her fourth No. 1 debut on the list and fifth leader overall.

On Country Airplay, “Smoke” lifts 24-22 in its second week, up by 21 percent to 17.4 million audience impressions. The cut also enters Country Streaming Songs at No. 18 (1.3 million U.S. streams).

“ ‘Smoke Break’ is essentially an anthem for hardworking people,” Underwood tells Billboard. “There are times in all of our lives when we’re just stressed out and tired and we need a break, so it’s just about having that mo-ment to be able to step away from whatever it is that’s stressing you out and just have a mo-ment for yourself.”

Given Underwood’s sterling radio track re-cord, programmers are, unsurprisingly, ap-proving of her latest single. “ ‘Smoke Break’ gets Underwood right back into the mainstream of country music,” says WSM-FM and WKDF Nashville PD Charlie Cook. “The lyr-ics address the hectic lives everyone now lives, and the production stands out as a testament that she is willing to take chances, yet play within what her fans expect.”

The song is “an anthem for the overwhelmed, something we can all relate to, and amen,” says iHeartMedia senior vp programming Gator Harrison. “It’s a smash.”

BIG ‘HOUSE’: Sam Hunt registers his third Country Airplay No. 1 in as many chart visits as “House Party” (MCA Nashville) rallies 2-1 in its 30th week (47.3 mil-

lion, up 2 percent). Hunt’s debut single, “Leave the Night On,” topped the Nov. 15, 2014 list and “Take Your Time” led May 2.

Hunt is the first artist to take three introductory Country Airplay entries (pro-moted to radio and excluding holiday fare) to No. 1 since 2008 to 2009, when Darius Rucker pulled off the hat trick with “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” “It Won’t Be Like This for Long” and “Alright.”

BACK FOR MOORE: Kip Moore’s second album, Wild Ones (MCA Nashville), bounds onto Top Country Albums at No. 2 with 35,000 sold. Moore bests the rank of his first set, Up All Night, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 in May 2012, although that album scanned a slightly higher first-week sum (37,000). The new release’s lead single, “I’m to Blame” (co-written by Moore, who co-penned all 13 songs on the set), holds at No. 21 (a notch below its No. 20 high) on Country Airplay and pushes 27-24 on Hot Country Songs.

Moore had f inished his second album months ago, but scrapped it and started over. “I’m finally understanding the pur-pose of the delay,” Moore explains. “I’ve al-ways been a spiritual person and, with that, I

knew there was a lesson in all of this. I can rest knowing I made the record that I wanted to make.”

Meanwhile, Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights rules Top Country Albums for a third week (54,000 units, down 35 percent). It has sold 458,000 during its first three weeks.

NEW REPORTER: As of this week’s Country Indicator chart (dated Sept. 12), KBVB Fargo, N.D., joins the reporting panel. The chart now comprises 105 stations.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2015 | PAGE 9 OF 19

JEFF WALKER CELEBRATEDHundreds of music-industry personnel attended an Aug. 28 memorial for AristoMedia Group president Jeff Walker, who died Aug. 24 while return-ing from a family vacation.

A 30-year member of the Country Radio Broadcasters board, Walker was an ultra-positive executive known as much for his relentless puns as for his busi-ness acumen, which had Aristo advance into such arenas as video promotion and country-club promotion when those avenues were still in their infancy.

The Australian-born Walker, the son of noted arranger Bill Walker (“Sunday Morn-ing Coming Down,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night”), started Aristo in 1980, working from his attic. The firm eventually assisted such acts as Toby Keith, Sugarland and Alan Jackson at various points in their careers.

A longtime member of the Country Music Association board, Walker was a vocal ad-vocate for country artists to think globally, pushing them to consider touring abroad be-fore it was trendy.

“He always amazed me with his kind-ness and warmth,” said Aristo vp publicity Christy Watkins during the service. “Dad

gave everyone a chance and truly saw the best in people ... He was notorious for calling up the guy or girl who had just lost their job and asking if he could take them out to lunch the next week and try to pick them up.”

The Oak Ridge Boys’ Duane Allen, Deborah Allen and CMA CEO Sarah Trahern were among those attending the service, which included a perfor-mance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Jamie O’Neal and “Journey On” by Ty Herndon.

“Lord, I don’t mean to be sacrilegious or irreverent, but we really feel sorry for you, because for eternity you will have to listen to Jeff Walker’s bad puns,” Sirius XM host Charlie Monk said with a figurative wink.

But Monk soon turned serious: “I’ve loved Jeff Walker a long, long time. And so has everyone in this church.”

Additional reporting by Deborah Evans Price.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2015 | PAGE 10 OF 19

MUSIC NOTES“Fifty nifty United States from 13 original colonies” — there’s an old-school song that teachers have used for decades to help students learn all of the states alphabetically. Lee Brice isn’t going at it from A to Z, but he is going full force at covering the nation in 2015. When he plays Nov. 15 in Rome, Ga., he will have performed in each state during this cal-endar year. Odd that Georgia will be the last state in Brice’s chain — it’s a neigh-bor to his current residence in Tennessee.

Country music has gotten fashionable, and the fashion world continues to make a connection. Kacey Musgraves will in-troduce her own line of footwear, Kacey by Lucchese, this fall. Her boots are ex-pected to retail for $350 to $400 a pair. Carrie Underwood, meanwhile, is set to show her new Calia line of active wear in New York on Sept. 10 during Fashion Week. It’s not her only clothing-related activity on the calendar. The day after that show, she’ll shoot the season finale of Lifetime’s Project Runway, serving as a guest judge on the episode with regulars Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The episode will air Nov. 5, one day after Underwood and Brad Paisley host the Country Music Association Awards on ABC.

Country artists will, in short order, have one more reason to visit New York. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert debuts Sept. 8 on CBS, renewing the network’s place in late-night TV following the retirement of David Letterman. Will Col-bert be as friendly to country acts as NBC’s Jimmy Fallon? Time will tell, but he is putting country into the mix in the first week. Toby Keith will guest on the Sept. 10 edition, which also features Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. Keith is a longtime Colbert buddy. Colbert gave a speech during Keith’s Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in June, and Keith made several stops on The Colbert Report, teaming with John Legend, Willie Nelson, Feist and Elvis Costello in 2008 on a version of “(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love and Under-standing” for the holiday special A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!

Josh Thompson’s unreleased Sony album will find its way to the general pub-lic this fall as ole issues the project as a two-volume set. Change: The Lost Re-cord, Volume One arrives Oct. 9, with the release date for the second half still unannounced. Musically inspired by such rebels as Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr., the album is a personal expression on family, road life and identity and represented an artistic step forward from his first album, which yielded top 20 hits with “Beer on the Table” and “Way Out Here.” Thompson co-wrote all the material on the project.

BRICE

Michael Ray celebrated the release of his self-titled debut album with an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning, America. From left are ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir, Ray, GMA host Robin Roberts, GMA news anchor Amy Robach, ABC metereologist Ginger Zee and GMA co-host Lara Spencer.

THE BROWNS

NASHVILLE & NATIONAL TOM ROLAND

GOOD WORKSThe last time that silver-screen cowboy Roy Rogers appeared on the country chart, it was with the 1991 duet “Hold On Partner” alongside Clint Black.

That will make Black an appropriate headliner on Sept. 11, when he plays a benefit at the Fort Worth (Texas) Convention Center for the Mustang Heri-tage Foundation. Held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Extreme Mustang Makeover, the concert’s proceeds will aid the foundation’s mission of placing mustangs in private care. More than 5,500 horses have received appropriate homes since the foundation’s inception in 2007.

Black’s appearance comes as he gears up for his first album of new material in 10 years. Thirty Tigers will release On Purpose on Sept. 25.

TWEET OF THE WEEKIt’s safe to say Creative Nation publicist Sarah Lai (@sarahlady) enjoys comfort food:

“Life is too short and too fragile not to chase your big dreams, to take epic chances and worry about how many calories are in mac & cheese.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2015 | PAGE 14 OF 19

“There is danger...“In the embers...“And you have only...“Yourself to blame.”The chorus in Don Henley’s “That Old Flame,” a duet with Martina

McBride, unfolds in short chunks. Every sentence is broken up into several phrases, none of which lasts more than five words. The space between them gives the listener time to digest what has been revealed and simultaneously creates a certain drama about where the song is going.

The technique encourages reflection, and a little reflec-tion about the songs Henley has written through the years — both as a solo artist and a founding member of The Eagles — identifies it as one of his go-to approaches in telling a tale. “Hotel California,” “Boys of Summer,” “The Heart of the Matter” and “Desperado” all incorporate some spacious-ness as their storylines roll out.

And that’s...Intentional.“You can really clutter up a melody if you put too many

words in there,” Henley says. “It’s really difficult, actually, to write a simple melody and say something at the same time.”

“If there’s a little struggle going on,” he adds in a follow-up email, “it’s wise to let melody win.”

That’s what happens in “That Old Flame,” released to country radio on July 17 through Play MPE as the first sin-gle from his upcoming album Cass County. A well-sculpted melody arrives in small bursts, allowing the accompanying lyrics to explore all the drama from a simple interaction: an email and a follow-up phone call between two former lov-ers. It’s a page out of real life for Henley, who brought up the concept with co-writer Stan Lynch (who also co-wrote Tim McGraw’s “Back When”) during a songwriting session at Henley’s home studio in late 2012. A girlfriend from the ’80s had reached out to him, and until they actually talked, he had some trepidation about what she wanted.

“This was one of the last things we wrote for the album because we needed another uptempo song,” Henley says. “On radio, it’s all about tempo now — of course, it always has been. You’ve got to start with an uptempo song.”

Henley, of course, got started as a drummer for The Eagles, and Lynch spent more than a decade on the toms for Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, so building a groove is a basic part of their collaborations. In this case, it started with a smol-dering undercurrent of eighth notes.

“A lot of stuff with Don and I will start very nebulous,” Lynch notes. “We’ll be playing our legs, sort of like, ‘Here’s the beat, here’s how it would scan,’ and then we’ll backfill it from there. I remember Don telling me years ago, ‘It’s got to work from the waist down and the neck up.’ Like, ‘It’s got to move me, and I’ve got to be able to think.’ ”

The song took multiple writing sessions to come together — “It’s not a puppy mill,” Lynch quips. “There’s no points for speed” — and it chronicled Henley’s emotional journey as he responded to his ex, who wanted to bring some closure to what had been a difficult parting.

“When you get to a certain point in life,” he says, “it’s good to bury the hatchet. It’s good to put any conf licts you might have had behind you and move on.”

Appropriate for a song about the past, Henley referenced a “cup of kind-

ness” from the standard “Auld Lang Syne” and built the musical elements around songs from another era.

“This melody harkens back to traditional melodies from long ago, a little bit of ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken,’ and there’s some rockabilly in there,” Henley says. “There are a lot of traditional roots in the chord progression.”

But it wasn’t completed until he came up with a short bridge that puts the conversation with his ex into a bigger context: “Is it really me you miss?/Or

just your long-lost youth?”“That couplet, for me, is extraordinary,” Lynch says.

“Don goes, ‘We’re going to need a bridge,’ and I was won-dering how you boil that down. And he did.”

They recorded a demo in Henley’s studio that they ultimately took to McBride’s Blackbird Studio in Nash-ville, where an A-list team of musicians built on — and ultimately replaced — the original instruments around Henley’s voice. Acoustic guitarist Bryan Sutton provides some of the throb underneath the track in tandem with drummer Greg Morrow, who played parts that most lis-teners will likely assume are Henley’s.

“Don puts it in the back pocket,” Lynch says. “He lays everything back a little bit as a drummer, and I think Greg naturally does that, too. They hit it off great — they both have Southern roots, they both love the same records, and they both listen to the same stuff.”

After the original session, Henley changed his mind about the bass part in the bridge. The first player wasn’t available at the time, so Jimmie Lee Sloas overdubbed that section; then they had him redo the entire song, just to keep a tonal continuity.

Henley meanwhile asked McBride to provide the fe-male voice for the second verse. The first album she had ever owned was The Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits, so she was easily persuaded to do it, especially after she heard “That Old Flame.”

“It has a lot of layers emotionally,” she says. “It’s kind of angry, kind of suspicious, kind of sweet. It just seemed to be coming from a very interesting place.”

She wedged an overdub session into her schedule and got most of it done that first day, though they had her come back in to “beat up a couple lines,” Lynch says. McBride held back a bit, singing in a way that hints at her inherent force without putting it all on the line.

“It’s not a real power vocal,” she says. “It’s kind of a mid-range, storytelling vocal. It was really just two people

trying to figure out what’s going on with each other.”Henley’s guitarist Chris Holt added a burning, melodic solo at the Dal-

las studio, and “That Old Flame” was an easy pick for a single, thanks to the tempo, McBride’s vocal and the track’s tone.

“It leans toward rock, and a lot of this modern country music that you hear now is very rock-oriented,” says Henley. “Some of it is downright metal.”

Henley and McBride will perform it in tandem live for the first time on Sept. 1 during an Austin City Limits taping in Texas. Audience members get-ting their initial exposure to it will experience “That Old Flame” in chunks: short bites of lyrics and judiciously placed fills that heighten the drama with-out creating a lot of clutter. In essence, the entire performance mirrors the spaciousness that’s built into those short phrases in the melody.

“The hole is just as important as the doughnut,” Henley explains. “It’s not always what you play. Sometimes it’s what you don’t play.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2015 | PAGE 15 OF 19

Amid the usual items you might find in the office of a Nashville music execu-tive, BBR Music Group president/CEO Benny Brown also keeps a toy-sized replica of the NASCAR truck his company sponsors, and he shows it off with the immense pride only a grandparent can muster. The tiny Ford F-150 is a model of the one driven by Brown’s grandson, 19-year-old Tyler Reddick, a rising star in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Says Brown, “Being able to support his racing efforts and help him make his dream come true is really im-portant to me.”

Brown, 74, feels exactly the same way about the artists signed to the rosters of his labels, which just expanded to include fourth imprint Wheelhouse Records, as Bill-board.biz broke news about on Aug. 31.

“I get more joy out of making people’s dreams come true than anything else,” he says, looking over a ros-ter of stars that now includes Jason Aldean — who has been with the label since his first hit — as well as Randy Houser, Thompson Square, Joe Nichols, Trace Adkins, Craig Campbell, Dustin Lynch, Parmalee and numer-ous up-and-comers.

In addition to sponsoring Reddick, Brown says his greatest accomplishment of the past year was “having enough success to be able to sign a couple more artists and hire additional staff to support them.” He speaks of his staff like family, and they feel the same way about him. But he’s also smart enough to surround himself with people he can con-tinue to learn from, even if he’s been in the business longer than some of them. “I think all of my employees, they’re almost like mentors to me,” he says. “No matter how much you think you know, even your own employees you can learn from.”

Brown’s business, launched 18 years ago, has grown to include publishing company Magic Mustang Music and management arm BBR Management, along with four labels: Broken Bow Records, Stoney Creek Records, Red Bow Records and now Wheelhouse, where newly signed artists Adkins and Granger Smith have been assigned.

Brown was born and partially raised in Broken Bow, Okla., the origin of his first label’s name. He made his mark — and his money — in the auto business before launching BBR, and continues to own and operate seven car dealer-ships in Northern California.

Cars remain his passion, and he is an enthusiastic collector of vintage ve-hicles, some of which are on display in his dealership showrooms. “I’ve got a

couple cars that are probably a little more special than others,” he says, listing a 1965 Mustang convertible, a ’67 Buick Riviera, a Model A coupe with a rumble seat and an ’85 Mercedes roadster among them.

While Brown doesn’t network much with the other label heads in town, he’s up to speed on the issues facing the industry, chief among them, slumping sales.

“One of the biggest changes in country music over the last 10 years first was the decline in physical sales and now the decline in digital sales as streaming becomes more and more dominant and significant,” he says. “It’s changed the business like no other factor ... and we have to continue to figure out a way to operate in this environment where there’s more equitable distribution of revenues. I think all of us labels, we’re going through some growing pains and difficult times in this transition. We don’t know yet where it’s going to take us. I’ve got my concerns that if some of these models aren’t changed that it’s — long term — going to hurt the quality of music.

“It all starts with the song,” he continues. “There are a lot of young writ-ers coming in wanting to write that big No. 1, but more and more it’s harder — even if they have the hits — to get the paydays that they did 10 years ago. Eventually, I think less and less newcomers are going to want to enter into it because they [know] they’ll starve to death.”

Despite the challenges, he’s keen to keep what’s special about Nashville special. “We’re a pretty close-knit group in this town, and I think our sense of community and caring for one another is different than it is in Los Angeles or New York,” he says. “Of course we’re all very competitive, but at the end of the day we all ... work together for common good.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
