We at Country Review would like to take this time to thank our valued readers and advertisers for their support and devotion to our magazine. As we delve into the holiday season and the winter months begin to shroud us in cold we can take this time to reflect upon our successes and the many lives we have touched. This year Golden Crown Productions, Country Review’s parent company, helped to raise funds for many charities through their Summer Concert Series. The recipient non-profit organizations include Hospice of the Valleys, Temecula Valley Foundation for Excellence in Education, Our Nicholas Foundation, Temecula Noon Rotary Imagination Library, Animal Friends of the Valleys, The Unforgettables Foundation, California Family Life Center, Charity for Charity, All From the Heart, and the New Generations Rotary Club. Combined, Golden Crown Productions was able to raise an astounding amount for these charities exceeding $50,000 in cash donations and over $45,000 in-kind. Our company was founded upon a passion for helping others and that passion is what fuels our future.

We would like to thank those who help others in our community and we wish everyone warmth and happiness during the holiday season and through the new year. Golden Crown Productions is excited for what is to come in 2012. Stay tuned and stay warm! And remember: Continue to support your local businesses this holiday season.

helping HANDS

Nearly three years ago, the Temecula Murrieta Rescue Mission was launched to help families who had been hit

hard by tough economic times.

Today, more than a million food boxes later, the need to provide groceries and aid to struggling families is stronger than ever especially during the holidays.

“We’re seeing a greater demand than ever before for our food boxes,” said David Carreon, Rescue Mission director with Temecula-based Rancho Community Church which teamed up with the Orange County Rescue Mission in 2009 to form the Temecula Murrieta Rescue Mission.

“The recession has hit a lot of families hard,” Carreon said. “People have lost their jobs, they’ve lost their homes, they’re living in their cars, or they don’t have enough money to buy what they need.”

The Rescue Mission hands out more than 6,500 pounds of food per week at its two distribution locations. One is located at the parking lot of the Rancho Community Church where food boxes are given out on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. and the other is located at Calvary Chapel in Murrieta on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Carreon estimates that between 150 to 200 people have shown up every week over the past few months at the Temecula site and 100 people a week are at the Murrieta site.

Each family in need receives a 25-pound food box filled with tuna and other canned meats, cereal, pasta, canned vegetables, bottled water, cereal bars and other non-perishable food items—usually enough for a family of four. Also distributed by the mission are fresh fruits and vegetables and bread, as well as some health hygiene supplies. The mission also provides clothing and baby supplies such as diapers, baby food and wipes.

With demand for food boxes increasing, the Temecula Murrieta Rescue Mission is relying even more on charitable donations. Food drives are a big way to gather needed foodstuffs whether they are led by individuals, businesses or schools, said Carreon.

“Organizing a food drive for the Rescue Mission is really simple,” he said. “In fact, I just had a call from a ten-year-old boy who wanted to do a food drive, and he was able to get started by using our food drive kit which helps with things like how long should the drive be, publicity, recruiting other people to help, and setting up a drop-off point.”

Businesses are also a great places for food drives, Carreon said, adding that having office departments compete with each other can make the drives a lot of fun, and that several longtime businesses in the community have conducted food drives for the mission.

Carreon also works with many schools, PTAs and youth groups to help organize food drives for the Rescue Mission.

But if someone wants get in the spirit of giving by donating to the mission, they don’t have to be part of a group, he said.

“They can donate money, or they can bring non-perishable foods to the drop-off boxes at either of our sites. Or it can be as simple as taking an empty bag from one of our volunteers who is standing in front of a grocery store,” Carreon said. “Grab the inventory list, grab the bag, and fill it. You’ll feel great when you hand that full bag back to the volunteer knowing that it will go to someone in need.”

Tis The SeasonBy Annette LaRocque, Murrieta VIP Florist

The holidays are a time for personal celebrations and traditions shared with family and friends. Flowers are unique to the

holiday season and indicate that the holidays are here once more. Holiday floral arrangements bring the soft gentle fragrance of the holiday season into your home.

Holiday flowers are an important part of your celebrations, and they make a great gift for someone tough to buy for, or for someone who entertains often. Flowers are also a creative way to communicate sentiments across the miles when you can’t be there in person. Flowers make the season bright and there

is no shortage of floral fabulousness for every occasion, holiday or style. So, whether you are planning a cocktail party, sit-down dinner, holiday event or if you just need a last-minute gift for someone special, flowers can be just the thing to keep people smiling until the New Year’s ball drops.

Christmas is a special time of year and flowers simply make the season more memorable. Some seasonal flowers last longer than others and choosing them for beauty or longevity (or both) requires some knowledge, as well as the ability to care properly for them during the holiday season. Poinsettias (a favorite at Christmas) can last weeks past Christmas when cared for correctly. Of course, cut Christmas flowers will likely last a week or so with care. Remember, at Christmas the air is usually drier and cut flowers may need more water than usual.

A little planning this holiday season goes a long way and ensures a beautiful flower arrangement will be ready for you and your guests. If you have questions about the best flowers to select or you wonder how best to care for your Christmas plants remember to contact MurrietaVIP Florist – but don’t wait too long!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

951 FITNESSREVAMP YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE by Holly Humphreys

It’s here—whether you’re ready or not. Just look at the seasonal shelves in your favorite store. Retailers like to call it ‘holiday season’ but let’s be more accurate. Weight Gain season begins now and runs straight through New Year’s. The next two months will bring ample opportunity for you to expand your waistline. Of course the choice is yours. So let’s take this moment of clarity, this calm before the storm, to outline a two-part plan that will save your waist from unwanted holiday inches. PART ONE: YOUR EXERCISE PLAN. Exercise is the first thing people cut when they get busy, and the holiday season is notorious for empty gyms. This year do something different—obligate yourself to exercise. Sign up to work with a fitness expert. This is the perfect solution for consistent, challenging and effective workouts. Join a class. You won’t be as effective exercising on your own during the busy holiday season, so join a class for accountability. Find something challenging that gets your heart rate elevated and uses strength training. Get a serious exercise buddy. Some friends can be an awesome help while others end up pulling you down. Find someone who shares our goals, is encouraging and is at a similar fitness level to your own.

2) PART TWO: YOUR DIET PLAN.The holidays offer ample opportunities to indulge, so you need to hammer down some guidelines before hitting that buffet line. I’m not saying that you

shouldn’t indulge in any seasonal treats, but use moderation. Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to eat until the point of being uncomfortable – will you really miss that bloated feeling? Decide which treats to cut out this year. Don’t bring edible treats to the office or to parties. You know that the leftovers will come home and you’ll end up eating far more than your share. This year do everyone a favor by not gifting fattening treats. When faced with a buffet line, load your plate first with greens, vegetables and lean meats before breads and heavier foods. Also drink water with your meal and keep alcoholic beverages to a 2-drink maximum. Beware of holiday drinks – most are brimming with calories. Hot drinks from coffee shops, cocktails at parties and creamy eggnog are all very enjoyable and all filled with empty calories. Stick with hot tea or unsweetened coffee. Everywhere you go during the holiday season brings you face-to-face with a plate of sweets. To avoid being a bore but without adding inches to your waist, try the one treat rule. Each time you’re in a social situation that involves sweets just eat one and enjoy your treat slowly.

You don’t have to gain weight this holiday season. The key is your mindset. If you approach the holidays with the mindset of, ‘I deserve to indulge and I shouldn’t have to exercise’ then you’ll enter 2012 a few pounds heavier, a little less healthy, and with lower energy than ever before. I believe that you deserve better. I believe that you should enter 2012 in better shape than you are today, healthier than you’ve been in a long time and with more energy than you thought possible.

Honeycutt Farms, open since 1990, is one of the longest-running eateries in Murrieta. Starting in Historic Old

Town, the restaurant has been in its current location since 1995, and is easily found by the presence of “Petunia Pig,” the bright pink mascot in front of the entry that was a gift from a long-time customer. A true Mom-and-Pop shop, Honeycutt Farms is down-home to the core. There are regular customers with menu items named after them, and a cook and waitress that have been there since the day Honeycutt opened. The warm atmosphere and friendly staff keep people coming back. Honeycutt Farms is a community gathering place where many friends come to visit. Breakfast is served all day, and please make sure you arrive with your appetite intact! Portions are generous, and the quality is evident. One Sunday a month, they offer their much-requested Eggs Benedict.

Honeycutt has been using a local smokehouse since their inception for their hams, which they honey glaze and spiral-slice on site. The honey glaze, a combination of honey, spices and seasonings, leaves a mouthwatering, crispy coating on the rim of each slice. If lunch is what you are after, they offer enormous, delicious sandwiches and homemade soup and chili every day. Top that off with some freshly made bread pudding with caramel sauce and whipped cream. The dinner menu is full of comfort foods such as fried chicken, meatloaf,

chicken-fried steak and ham, with your choice of side dishes including homemade cucumber salad and coleslaw, two of the locals’ favorites. They also have daily specials, including Fish and Chips on Fridays. Special menu items are available for both kids and seniors. Honeycutt also can accommodate your group of up to 24 people in a semi-private back room.

As we approach the Holiday season, the friendly staff will be glazing and spiral-slicing your holiday ham to grace your table and make your family gathering special. You can purchase whole hams, roasted turkey, sides, and desserts as well as party trays - both hot and cold. How about a tray of mini-sandwiches for the office holiday party? Or a whole ham with all the trimmings for the family get together? If you’d rather whip up something yourself, visit Honeycutt’s full-service deli with meats, cheeses, salads, bacon and fresh breads that you can take home. Either way, visiting this Murrieta icon is an experience you don’t want to miss!

It’s your New Year’s resolution. This is the year you are going to plant that wonderful vegetable garden and really get to

enjoy all that fresh, home-grown produce coming straight from your backyard.

But wait... Didn’t you try this last year when you popped a six-pack of starter veggie plants into a patch of ground, and then realized that you hadn’t set up any easy way to water them? Have you forgotten about how keeping the weeds and the bugs and the critters at bay seemed like an endless chore? Or how that cute little zucchini plant turned out to an untameable yard-eater?

Don’t throw in the “trowel” on your resolution this year yet! There’s one local gardening businessman who has an innovative solution for anyone who wants to savor their own freshly grown vegetables but who doesn’t have the time, energy or knowledge to maintain a thriving garden.

“There is actually quite a lot for someone to do and and learn about when they plant a vegetable garden, especially if they want their garden to produce as much food as it can,” said Andy Cannella, owner and

gardening maestro of Girasole Backyard Gardens. His company provides a unique “Install, Plant, Maintain and Harvest” service throughout the Temecula Valley and nearby communities including Menifee, Canyon Lake, and Lake Elsinore.

“Most people try planting tomato plants they get from Home Depot and then wonder why their garden didn’t do what they wanted. They don’t have the time or the know-how to figure out what went wrong. They’re too busy,” said Cannella. “But at the same time there are more and more people who are

interested in eating healthy, organic food which—best of all—can be grown in their own backyards.”

Fueled by a lifelong fascination in gardening since his boyhood days watching his grandfather raise vegetables, Cannella, a longtime resident of Aguanga and a former administrator with a San Diego County Indian tribe, was inspired a year ago to begin his all-in-one backyard vegetable gardening service after reading a magazine article about an similar start-up in Washington State. He has earned several

With 10,000 people turning age 65 every day, the baby boomer market is

the largest and fastest-growing demographic profile in the U.S. And, as these boomers grow older, they’re finding that strength can diminish if they don’t regularly exercise. A myriad of health problems can occur such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis.

In comes Geri-Fit®, a sit-down chair exercise class that uses a set of 2-pound dumbbells for strengthening the body. It was created by Temecula resident Francesca Fisher who is herself a strength training advocate and certified Senior Strength Training Specialist.

“We are hoping to offer Geri-Fit® classes at more senior centers, retirement centers, universities and hospitals across the U.S.,” she states. Her 19-year-old company relocated from Cleveland, Ohio to Temecula, California in 2009 with the desire to expand the program here on the west coast. Fisher’s Geri-Fit® program is fast becoming the hot topic at fitness trade shows and medical conventions… and mainly because it works. Researchers presented Geri-Fit® at the 2011 American College of Sports Medicine’s annual convention, and they appear hopeful that it will soon be part of more future studies.

Marie Bebee, an 88-year-old who participates in Geri-Fit® classes held at the North Olmsted Senior Center, says Geri-Fit® has kept her going strong for the past 15 years. She first enrolled in the program in 1996 and attends religiously twice-a-week. Bebee states that she “can’t live without the program.“

The same holds true for John Stephenson, another 71-year-old Geri-Fitter who swears by the program. “It makes me feel good and the aches and pains are gone after the workout,” he states.

Next year, Fisher plans to get the Geri-Fit® program recognized by insurance companies as a reimbursable preventative wellness class. “We have a track history of producing some of the healthiest seniors in the country. If people got paid to exercise, we’d have fewer health care claims.”

And, she’s on track to get there. With Geri-Fit® recently obtaining provider approval by the Riverside County Office on Aging, “the next step is to team up with a local hospital or university that’s interested in receiving grant funding in order to conduct a study on the Effects of Strength Training and the Older Population,” she adds.

The City of Murrieta’s Community Service Department recently contracted with Geri-Fit Company LLC to provide an educational one-nighter class called Osteoporosis Workshop starting January 2012. Participants learn 15 key exercises that use dumbbells to strengthen the body and increase bone density. With enough interest, Fisher hopes to offer ongoing Geri-Fit® classes. “This is the same way we started expanding in Ohio. We’d offer the one taster class and everybody wanted more afterwards.

It’s an easy sell because doctors are recommending to their patients to exercise

with free weights and people aren’t sure how to do it. We are here to help them learn how to get stronger so that they can live longer.”

From her neighborhood power walks to supporting a statewide restaurant system of more than two dozen locations, Sally

Myers’ stride maximizes every minute of her fast paced life.

As vice president of Marketing for Temecula-based BMW Management, the country’s largest Sizzler franchisee, Sally is instrumental in the organization’s success. At a recent Sizzler conference, BMW Management earned multiple awards for outstanding customer service and satisfaction. Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine honored BMW Management in Las Vegas with its 2011 MVP Award for their commitment to their Guests, Hospitality and Community Service.

Sally and her high-school-sweetheart husband, Gary – aka the Sizzlin’ Dynamic Duo – opened their first Sizzler in Temecula during 1983. Gary is president and CEO of the family business that has grown to include 24 Sizzlers stretching from Sacramento to San Diego, with two Richie’s Real American Diners in Rancho Cucamonga and Palm Desert.

Their New Generation Murrieta Sizzler reopened a year ago, and Sally’s determination to add an outdoor mesquite grill for cooking BBQ sliced tri tip is a crowd favorite. Inside, fresh, hand-cut sirloin steaks line a display case like those found in high-end meat markets, visually reinforcing the quality ingredients and care guests can expect.

A key to BMW Management’s story is Sally’s focus on making a difference and adding value to the communities served. Sally’s leadership is influenced by author John Maxwell, who advocates management based on passion, character and results. These attributes have a positive impact on the company’s 1,300 employees.

Twenty years ago, Sally founded the Student of the Month high school recognition program for college-bound seniors. What started with three high schools and two sponsors has since grown to include more than 27 schools and 250 sponsors supported by 30 volunteers in Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore and Parris/Menifee, with additional communities pleading for program expansion.

Student of the Month recognizes young adults for character, integrity and perseverance through demanding times, while honoring God, country, family, community and free enterprise. During a meal at Sizzler, students speak of life lessons and paying it forward after college. They talk about how they have made a difference in their families, schools and communities.

“I’m passionate about the Student of the Month program because it reinforces one person CAN make a difference,” added Myers. “It’s a life lesson BMW Management celebrates internally. I take pride seeing others reach their stride, and I will always encourage others to stay the course and never give up!”

Annette LaRocque-Zepeda, owner of Murrieta VIP Florist, has lived in the Temecula Valley

for 28 years. Growing up in Wildomar, she now resides in Murrieta with her husband and two children. Annette started working for a local florist when she was 17, and, as an employee, helped open Murrieta VIP Florist in 1991. In 2003, Annette was given the opportunity to purchase the shop, and knew it was time to move on to a new phase of her life. Annette was confident that she could run the business; the key was figuring out how to run it successfully. While pondering how to make this happen, Annette decided to visit the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce. It was there that she was led into a whole new world. A world where she could meet other professionals with the same ambitions she had herself. Over the years, Annette has surrounded herself with positive, outgoing, strong-willed people. She is grateful to many business leaders in the Valley that have guided her over the years. She is on the Board for the Murrieta Chamber, President of the Professional Women’s Roundtable and a member of Temecula Chamber. In her spare time, Annette and her family love spending time at the River, and entertaining friends and family at their home with some pool time and great food.

Annette loves being active in her community and helping others. As the owner of a successful business in Murrieta, Annette not only feels that being involved in the community is one of the things she loves most, but feels it is an essential part of owning a business. Annette is a hands-on owner; not only the “face” of her business, but she is also in the shop creating floral arrangements and greeting customers. Murrieta VIP Florist is a full-service floral shop, offering local delivery of beautiful flowers, plants, gifts and balloon arrangements. They can also arrange floral delivery anywhere in the world. Annette and her devoted team do spectacular weddings - anything you can imagine from bridal party bouquets to reception decor - and can help make any special occasion just a little more beautiful. Murrieta VIP also handles corporate accounts for many local businesses. Annette feels blessed to be able to own a business doing what she loves - and that is evident in everything she touches, from her flowers to her volunteer work.

Becky Young, Fleet Director for Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac in Temecula, is beginning

her 13th year with Paradise and has been with General Motors for over 30 years.

Becky moved to Temecula from Salt Lake City and was raised in a small Utah town. The small town feel of Temecula is one of the things she loves most about our valley. She began her career with GM as co-owner of two small-town Chevrolet dealerships, also in Utah. Becky has won numerous awards from General Motors throughout her career. Her success can be attributed to her strong work ethic and goal-driven approach.

Becky enjoys serving and giving back to her community. As a young girl she watched her father give to their small town and has found joy following in his footsteps. You can see Becky at most every community event in the valley representing Paradise. She spends the rest of her time at the dealership selling new and pre-owned vehicles. Whatever she does at work, in the community or with her family, she does it with passion. Becky contributes her success to the commitment she has for the things she believes in. “It is easy to sell what I believe in and I believe in

my dealer, the dealership and in the Chevrolet and Cadillac product.” When Becky started in the car business she made a commitment to make it her career, not just a job until something better came along. Then she started meeting the customers, who soon became her friends, and that’s when she really started loving her job.

Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac, Dealer/Operator Terry Gilmore says, “Becky embraces the Paradise way to ‘do the little things’ for our customers. She always goes above and beyond to make sure each and every customer is completely satisfied. Her loyalty to Paradise and dedication to our customers is second to none.”

Becky has four sons and ten grandchildren with two more on the way. “My love for my family is my true joy,” says Becky. “Similarly, my customers become my family and friends.” Becky genuinely cares about the people she does business with and strives to make their experience at the dealership a positive one, ending in lasting relationships.

I am so blessed to be a second generation resident of the Temecula Valley, which I

continue to call home! I also do business here and serve my community.

I received my first certification as a fitness professional in 1997, primarily to grow in my own knowledge and experience. But fitness became a true passion that eventually lead to my first figure competition in 2001, and the beginning of 951 Fitness.

I wanted to become as fully versed as possible in all aspects of fitness, including training regiments and nutrition as well as lifestyle modifications. I started out just working with friends and family, which progressed to individuals I met while training for my first competition, and the referrals that followed.

This passion for fitness and wellness has grown to the point that I want to make sure everyone meets their goals. Creating 951 Fitness and being able to offer multiple options for busy individuals is a dream come true. Today 951 Fitness offers boot camps, small group classes, one-on-one training, and nutrition or lifestyle

coaching to help you be able to create goals, enjoy the benefits of exercise and join me in sharing a passion for life and have the energy to enjoy every minute of it!

All of my clients are like family to me! They are what gets me out of bed at 4:00 am every morning raring to go. I look forward to teaching, educating and empowering them to go beyond their limits.

In addition to owning a successful fitness business, I am a single mother of a beautiful 16 year old daughter, Tori. She truly is my joy and the reason I push myself to succeed. I believe that it is important for your children to see you be healthy, active and make good choices when it comes to the food you put in your body. Tori is learning firsthand what it is like to have your world turned around by the food you eat. She recently was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Every day is a gift and we are learning together the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

Originally hailing from Texas, Suzanne Lingold feels she has found her home in

the Temecula Valley. Suzanne is an Associate Dean in Extended Learning for California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), and the administrator of the Temecula campus. She moved to San Marcos almost ten years ago to accept her position with CSUSM, and relocated to Temecula in 2008 when she was assigned to open the campus here. Impressed with the local communities, Suzanne has become very involved. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Executive Board of the Economic Development Corporation of Southwest California, and the Board of Directors for the Southwest Community Development Organization. She enjoys getting to know the people of her community, and getting involved allows her to do just that. Suzanne feels the Temecula Valley has an attractive tourism community that contributes to the local economy, and refers to it as a “gem.” She too enjoys what brings in visitors - the golfing, the wineries and music performances, as well as the resorts, spas and casinos.

Suzanne’s position in Extended Learning incorporates academic outreach and continuing education, including degree, certificate and

professional development programs. She recognizes that Temecula and the surrounding cities are vibrant, and committed to smart growth while not losing sight of the desire to keep quality of life at a premium. She says it is obvious that the communities “recognize that education is the key to prosperity,” and welcome higher learning to the area. What makes CSUSM at Temecula unique is that the campus is not supported with state dollars. The tuition and fees go toward paying the cost of instruction without being subsidized by shrinking state dollars. CSUSM wants to hear from us, and what we believe is important to help cultivate a workforce that supports the region and its growth.

Suzanne has two children - a daughter who now lives in northern CA, and a son who resides in San Diego. They both followed her to California, agreeing with Suzanne that the region had much to offer. Suzanne is also an aspiring sculptor - a hobby that has turned into a passion as she has developed her skills and found her talents. Suzanne would also love to see more of the fine arts incorporated into this area, and would welcome the opportunity to help make that happen.

life is all about her commitment to helping her clients achieve their dreams. After all, she’s spent most of her adult life mastering her professional and business skills while delivering outstanding service every step of the way. It is no wonder then, that even on her days off she can often be found entrenched in her work, searching for new and even better ways to raise the bar on customer satisfaction. She loved connecting with La Jolla’s elite international clientele, and remained dedicated to this industry for the next 15 years. Now, as a sought-after Real Estate specialist of more than 14 years, Monica applies the same skills she developed during her many years in the hotel industry. Tammy Marine has served as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Inland

Valley since 2005. Tammy’s passion for helping others stems back to her youth. “In high school, a natural disaster took the lives of over 200 people and demolished the family home I grew up in. It took years to rebuild so, as a community, we banded together to support each other. I remember the people and agencies that came to help those affected by the disaster and I thought…someday I want to do that too!”

Under her leadership, the affiliate has quadrupled its building locally while also supporting international building and disaster response efforts including help to places like the Katrina states, Haiti, Nepal and most recently, Cambodia and Paraguay. In addition, the affiliate has opened two successful Restores and implemented a home repair and maintenance program impacting over 60 families this year alone. “No matter where you live, a home is the cornerstone of your life – it affects your health, well being and even confidence; it is where you raise your children and nurture your relationships; it is where tradition and memories are created…..EVERYONE deserves a decent, affordable place to call home!”

Tammy also serves as a member of the U.S. Council Advocacy Committee for Habitat for Humanity

International and has served for three years as the Vice President of the Southern Californian Affiliates Association. “It’s a privilege to serve as an Executive Director. Non profits attract amazing people – there’s just no other way to say it! Board members, committee members, volunteers and staff all come together with one common goal in mind: to serve others! I am constantly amazed at the generosity of our community and the caliber of folks who get involved with philanthropy. Together, we are making things happen in our community for those who need it the most and that is quite a feeling!”

While she will be the first to tell you that she feels her work has only begun, In November 2011, Tammy was selected as the 2011 Joan Sparkman Unity Award recipient from the Professional Women’s Roundtable. “What an unexpected honor! Joan Sparkman is a community icon! I only hope to accomplish a 10th of what she has accomplished so far! I’m just thrilled to love my work and be a part of a team of people doing the right thing for the right reasons!” Tammy resides in Temecula with her husband, Scott and two children - Taylor and Dustin, and stepdaughter Lindsay.

The Mill restaurant in Old Town Murrieta is a local’s favorite! One of the many reasons for this is because of their wonderful

staff. During a recent conversation with owner/partner Adam Bouvet, he had some pretty great things to say about the employees that make up the family that is the Mill.

Adam’s business partner Linda Westfall is a familiar face in the community. She has been in the Valley for many years and is very involved in different ways. Linda is soon to receive a lifetime achievement award from the California Association of Directors of Activities, something she has remained involved in even after retiring from her career in education. Linda sets the tone for the Mill, as a giving person who cares more about people than anything

else. This is one reason they rarely lose employees. This attitude carries over to the staff which includes her daughter Dana Westfall.

One of the defining hallmarks of a strong business is employee retention, and the Mill has many people working for them that have been there for years. Sandy, Felice, Tracy, Breanna and Jamie have all been with the Mill for at least seven years and are familiar faces to regular customers. They tend to know your favorite dishes and beverages, and greet many regulars by name. Kiley and Haley are sisters that have been customers of the Mill since they were toddlers. Adam feels a sense of pride to see the kids he has watched grow up return to the Mill as employees because they want to be there. That is not the only set of sisters; Sandy and Tracy are another pair of siblings found at the Mill, along with two of their cousins. Before becoming employees at the Mill, Trish, Judy and Lauren were all former customers.

Adam feels that every person that works at the Mill is part of a big family, and is instrumental to the Mill’s success. They are a tightly-knit group. They do things together outside of work, and everyone takes a vested interest in the success of the restaurant – which makes every employee a stand-out. Adam says there are two primary goals to all employees at the Mill – to run the restaurant with the utmost efficiency, and to treat everyone - coworker or customer - with the utmost respect and compassion. The main focus of the Mill is to serve fresh, delicious food with outstanding customer service – and they do an excellent job at both.

Over the past several years, Soboba Casino has brought big-name entertainment to the San Jacinto Valley, and Tarri

Rubio has played an important role in that development as the casino’s Entertainment Manager/Radio & Talent Buyer.

When Rubio started working there a dozen years ago, the casino had a small stage with limited seating at the rear of the building. But the Tribal Council of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians had much bigger things in mind, and built an outdoor venue with seating for more than 8,000 people. The Council also added an indoor space called AC’s Lounge, which can seat up to 400 for more intimate events.

Drawing on her experience and contacts in the entertainment industry, Rubio has helped bring to the casino such top-tier acts as the country duo Brooks & Dunn, the Latin rock band Santana, singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks, R&B legend Smokey Robinson, the hard-rock act KISS and many more. The indoor lounge has hosted personalities such as Debbie Reynolds (the performer widely regarded as “America’s Sweetheart”), 1950s and ’60s singing icon Pat Boone, country star and Grand Ole Opry fixture Randy Travis and the Australian rock duo Air Supply.

The casino also stages cultural and sporting events such as the annual Inter-Tribal Powwow, mixed martial arts fighting, rodeos, car and motorcycle shows and sand drag races.

Rubio says her job is to bring quality entertainment to casino customers at reasonable prices, and since the economic downturn she has been directed to stage free events, including the annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks show. She is particularly proud of Soboba’s role in West Coast Thunder, which saw thousands of motorcyclists riding from Riverside to the casino on Memorial Day in honor of the nation’s veterans.

Previously, Rubio was education/events coordinator for Hemet Hospital for 15 years. She met her husband, Richard Rubio while both were working at Soboba in 2004. Tarri has a grown son and daughter and together Tarri and Richard have seven grandchildren. They live in Riverside. Tarri credits Soboba Casino for giving her the opportunity to have a job that she loves.

Tami Shobert was born and raised in Colorado, along with her seven brothers and sister. After graduating high school,

Tami relocated to Arizona to attend college. After meeting her future husband and getting married, their goal was to move to California, which they did in Spring of 2009. Tami has experience with opening several new properties where she was instrumental in establishing the Human Resources departments.

She holds a master’s degree in Human Resources Management and a bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in Journalism.  When she is not working she enjoys biking and hiking with her husband of 22 years and walking her Dalmatian Darley, whom she adopted from the Humane Society. Rhonda Warner, Vice President of Operations for the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce, has

worked at the Chamber for almost seven years. She started part time as the front office receptionist, and worked her way up to her current position. That seems to be standard protocol for Rhonda, who has always enjoyed starting at the bottom and working her way up to the top! Before working with the Murrieta Chamber, Rhonda worked for ten years at Glen Ivy spa, starting as a pool cleaner. When she left, she was acting Manager on Duty. Glen Ivy is where she credits gaining most of her extraordinary customer service skills, as the Spa educated their employees constantly in that regard.

Rhonda has been in Murrieta since 1995, but grew up in Cerritos. She loves this Valley and the people in it, and even more, loves her position with the Chamber! She enjoys meeting new people that quickly turn into friends and family. One of her duties is to plan all of the Chamber’s events, from networking breakfasts to mixers, the enormously popular Mega-Mixers, and annual events such as the Reverse Drawing and the Installation dinner, making each one different and unique. She finds great satisfaction in putting on these events that bring everyone together. One of the most

rewarding aspects of her position, says Rhonda, is “to take a person and introduce them to their next customer.” She strives to make all Chamber events warm and inviting, to both members and future members.

Rhonda and her husband Ken are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary in June of 2012. They have two grown sons, three grandchildren and three dogs. Rhonda and Ken enjoy spending time in their RV, and are diehard Charger fans. One of their favorite pastimes is watching football with their family and friends.

Murrieta Chamber CEO Rex Oliver feels Rhonda is a huge part of the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce. “Rhonda’s position with the Chamber requires her to be on top of all facets of the day-to-day operations as well as all events. I don’t think the Chamber would function very well if we did not have Rhonda looking out for our interests,” says Rex. “She is a very valued and trusted employee.” One doesn’t have to look far to find Rhonda at Chamber events - she is always right in the middle, with her big smile!

Kay Harrison, Community Relations Coordinator of the Marketing Department

for Southwest Healthcare System (Rancho Springs and Inland Valley Medical Centers) is a newcomer to the corporation but not to the Temecula Valley. Kay and her husband moved to the area 7 years ago and upon arriving, she instantly knew this was “home.” From a very young age, living in Southern California was one of her dreams and each day Kay appreciates the beauty and charm of this Valley.

Kay began her marketing career 25 years ago in small business, including two of her own. Her success can be attributed to her strong work ethic and tenacity for overcoming obstacles. Her eight months as Community Relations Coordinator for SWHCS has been her greatest business experience. Aside from working with incredible people, her increased involvement in the community is one of the many highlights of her position. Being part of the marketing department also gives her the opportunity to attend a variety of local events and let people know what’s happening at the hospitals. One of her favorite roles is that of visiting those who come to the hospitals. “Over the years, I have learned that a ‘few kind words’ is often the most simple - but very powerful way to

serve others. I try to live by this rule every day.” Brian Connors, Director of Marketing at SWHCS, states, “Kay knows that it’s those tender moments of understanding that make the difference with someone who’s facing a challenge with their health.”

Kay is grateful to the community she lives and works in, is passionate about reciprocating and has served on numerous non-profit boards. She has been actively involved in the Murrieta Chamber for six years and is currently Chairwoman of the Board of Directors. Kay truly enjoys the camaraderie aspect of community networking, and the friends she has made along the way.

During her college years, Kay and her husband Lex both had the same obsession for snow skiing, which brought them together over 30 years ago. They both raced for the BYU ski team before marrying, and then Kay continued as a ski instructor. While raising their four children, they spent many years on the slopes while teaching their children to ski. “Our children are now adults, but we are still devoted to them and our time together - on and off of the slopes,” says Kay.

Safe Alternatives celebrates Melissa Donaldson’s 10 year anniversary as the

Executive Director of Safe Alternatives for Everyone! At the SAFE Annual Meeting on October 6th, the SAFE Board of Directors unveiled the upcoming SAFE Brick Garden that will be in front of the SAFE building. A large stone engraved with the SAFE Logo and Founder Carol Niles’ dedication on it was unveiled as the centerpiece of the upcoming Brick Garden. Melissa was presented with the first Brick as a token of her ten years of leading SAFE. The agency will be offering individuals and businesses the opportunity to purchase a brick for $150 in honor of a loved one. Showcase your business support or any other form of acknowledgement you would like to express.

Melissa was also presented with a beautiful poem from Rhonda Reinke about a client’s journey from a life of abuse and violence to safety and the help many others have received at SAFE. Rhonda also read some

touching comments from the community about Melissa’s leadership at SAFE. A quote from Councilman Edwards reads “Melissa has brought experience, passion and bulldog determination to SAFE. She is the iron fist in the velvet glove. She answers a very special calling and we are blessed to have her.”

“ I am honored to receive this recognition from those closest to what we do, the best Board of Directors out there! What we do at SAFE is not out there for all to see and we deal with the dark side of what we as human beings can perpetrate against each other. The good news is, there is light at the end of that tunnel, even one that was violent and abusive. SAFE helps to provide that light with the community’s help. I am truly thankful to be part of a great team of staff, Board and volunteers that are always there to help others. I hope I have the opportunity to serve our community for at least another ten years!” ~Melissa Donaldson.

Commerce Bank of Temecula Valley (CBTV)

opened in September of 2007 in Murrieta to serve the businesses in the Temecula Valley and surrounding areas. A community bank, Commerce Bank is owned by more than 300 shareholders - primarily local business owners, including their Board of Directors and Advisory Board. Their customers primarily consist of small- to medium-sized local businesses, the people that own those businesses, and the people that work for them. In a recent chat with CFO LouEllen Ficke, I was given the opportunity to learn a little more about Commerce Bank as well as the staff that operates it. With the exception of management and officers, every operations employee at the bank holds the same title - Banking Specialist. Each Banking Specialist is empowered with the ability to make decisions that benefit the customer and protect the bank; to handle all requests and satisfy client needs on the spot and meet regulatory guidelines. LouEllen refers to this team of Banking Specialists as the “backbone of the bank.”

With LouEllen’s over 30 years of experience as a senior officer with community banks, she knows what she is talking about. Also in the role of Executive Vice President, LouEllen closely understands the culture of the community bank and the things it provides in unexpected ways. One of the things that LouEllen prides CBTV on the most is their innovative approach to simplifying banking for their customers. One product they offer is their RemoteDeposit

Service - a no-fee service that allows you to scan checks from your place of business and deposit the funds into your account without ever having to leave your office. No cost for the scanner, no cost for the service, and 24/7 availability. CBTV also offers simple, secure online banking and bill pay - and once again, it’s free. Speaking of free, another no-cost service CBTV offers is ID Reclaim.

This resolution service for victims of identity theft provides an advocate to assist you with all aspects of the reclamation process to restore you to your pre-theft status - and this service is available to all bank customers.

With all of the value-added, no cost benefits to banking with Commerce Bank of Temecula Valley, it’s no wonder that LouEllen refers to their way of doing business as “private banking for everyone in the community.” Banking Specialist Jennifer Weidinger sums it all up very nicely: “CBTV is like a big family - please come and see for yourself.”

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches aren’t supposed to be budget-busters.

But sticker shock is what many Temecula Valley grocery shoppers got when they reached for the peanut butter last fall and saw that prices for one of America’s most beloved food products had skyrocketed by more than 30%.

So what are local grocery store customers to do for the new year? Well, the fIrst thing on their list should be checking out GroceryConnection.org, a website which tracks grocery prices in the Temecula Valley and surrounding communities.

“Food prices have been rising, and they are expected to keep rising,” said Shellie Milne, the creator/organizer of the Grocery Connection website. “People are having to stretch their dollars, and they want to know how they can get the most for their money when regular staples like sirloin roast, potatoes, eggs and whole milk are going up every year.”

Milne, who lives in rural Winchester with her husband and six kids, came up with the idea for her website after realizing that most people have no idea why food prices are bursting their grocery budgets.

“It was becoming more difficult to feed my family, and I got very interested in wanting to know why and how factors such as legislation was impacting food production and distribution,” she said, adding that she is also very active with conservative Tea Party chapters in southwest Riverside Country.

“So I started tracking food prices every week. One night last summer I was in the WinCo store in Temecula around one a.m., and a man who was shopping there asked about what I was doing,” recalled Milne. “He got so interested in wanting to know why food prices were going up that I was inspired to put together a website that compared food prices and also included information about the financial impacts of legislation on food.”

She said that government export policies and rising energy costs are also having an effect on grocery bills, particularly when they influence the costs of agricultural baseline foods such as alfalfa.

“Dairy food prices could go very high this winter,” Milne said. “Alfalfa, which is what California dairy farmers feed their stock, is having shortfall in crop production and part of that is due to exports of hay to places like Japan and China. Prices have soared, but the worst thing is that, at a cost of $16 to $25 per

There’s a whole new lively scene brewing in San Diego, and it has transformed Temecula Valley’s neighbor to the south

into “America’s Craft Beer Capital.”

Now considered a major tourist destination for its world-class brews, the region is home to more craft breweries than any other county in California. And with so many small and mid-size handcrafted beer-making establishments to choose from, taking a beer tour is one good way to start exploring the land of porters, India pale ales and Imperial stouts.

But you don’t have to make the drive all the way to down to San Diego to join a beer tasting rideabout. North County San Diego, just a short day trip away from Temecula—has more than a dozen microbreweries and a unique beer tour that is an adventure in itself.

That’s because the Scavengers Beer & Adventures Tour, located out of Carlsbad, not only gives enthusiastic handcrafted beer lovers a chance to sample many award-winning brews, but they also probably will get the only chance in their lives to ride around in six-wheeled, open air beast of a Swiss military vehicle called a Pinzgauer.

“Oh, yeah, the people who go on these tours to explore handcrafted beer are up for most anything,” said Adam Hall,

Scavenger’s tour operator, small batch brewer and self-admitted “beer geek”, “so the idea of discovering the microbreweries here, many of which are kind of hidden away in commercial buildings, while traveling in the Pinz feels like a safari trip.”

Adding to the mystique of the tours are some of the names of various craft beer establishments such as The Lost Abbey or the Iron Fist or Green Flash. And that doesn’t include some of the exotic names of the beers themselves like Sharkbite Red and Deuces Wild!

When asked about how his company got its own picturesque name, Hall said it perfectly captures the unexpected twists of the tours.

“Part of the beer tour adventure is that sometimes the microbrewers are going to be in between the brewing of a certain beer, or that they only have certain beers on tap on a particular day or something else could be going on,” explained Hall. “So a large part of the fun is the scavenging hunt, but it’s still a rad time.”

Although more and more women are becoming fans of handcrafted beer, Hall said that about eighty percent of the beer tour’s groups are men, and that on wine tours, eighty percent of

Two alpaca ranches in Southern California, Alpacas del Valle Cereza in Cherry Valley, and Alpacas de Los Arboles

in Temecula, are breeders of world-class alpacas. These charming members of the camelid family (camels, llamas, etc.), offer a rewarding lifestyle. Why would someone want to raise or breed alpacas? Several reasons! First, raising alpacas is a way to “get back to nature” and away from the pressures of the work place. These gentle creatures are easy to care for, are great with kids, and their calm nature is soothing and pleasant. They also possess exquisite fleece, which is harvested once per year by shearing. The fleece is be spun into yarn that is similar in many ways to cashmere. Raising and breeding alpacas can also be a source of income, especially when quality lineages of animals are involved. Alpacas can be an interesting and low-impact retirement business.

Anyone with at least a half-acre of property can raise alpacas but check to be sure your land is zoned for livestock. There is no need for a barn; the only necessities are appropriate fencing, shelter from the sun and rain, food and water. The cost to own alpacas is minimal; it runs approximately $300 per year to feed and shear each animal. Protection from predators is critical. The most common danger to alpacas is domestic dogs, so the addition of a livestock guardian dog is a good idea. Breeds such

as Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherds are wonderful with alpacas.

Alpacas are inquisitive and have gentle personalities. They are curious but shy, intelligent and have a strong herd instinct. Lisa Shimeld, a breeder, certified shearer and alpaca judge, refers to the animals as “utterly charming.” She says the alpacas love to watch people work and will interact with humans. Lisa and her husband Brad Johnson have been breeding alpacas for 15 years. They love everything about the alpaca lifestyle, from the adorable, gorgeous babies (called “crias”) to the many amazing people who have become their friends.

There are two varieties of alpaca. The huacaya has a fuzzy “teddy bear” look while the fleece of the suri is straight and hangs towards the ground. Alpaca fleece is warmer than wool and can be worn by most people who are “allergic” to other natural fibers. A full-grown alpaca will reach around five feet at the head and three feet at the withers. Pricing for these adorable animals is contingent on many factors. Visit www.cherryvalleyalpacas.com, or contact Lisa at 951-845-9729 for more information. Alpacas de Los Arboles (Doug and Marian Guy) can be reached at 951-587-0471.

artist SPOTLIGHT

michaelmandella

Every now and then, you hear a voice that makes you simply sit back and say, “Wow.” This was my reaction recently when

given the opportunity to hear local aspiring country singer Michael Mandella belt out a few songs at his restaurant in Temecula, Michael Mandella’s It’s All Good Bar & Grill.

The raw talent Michael displays is magnified once one hears the story of tragedy and triumph that has brought him to where he is today. In 1996, in the midst of what was a promising beginning to a professional music career, Michael and several members of his band where traveling from Michael’s hometown of Porterville to Southern California for a show. A horrific traffic accident killed two of his bandmates, including Michael’s uncle Butch and his best friend, Jason. Michael himself suffered extensive injuries,

and suffering intense grief over the loss of his uncle and friend, his music career was put on the back burner. Michael once said, “For a while after the crash, I didn’t think I’d ever do music again. Losing my uncle and one of my best friends made me feel really guilty. Being the only survivor - it was an awful blow - I felt I had lost everything.”

In 1999, Michael decided to try and put his past behind him and embrace his dream once again, using his music to honor the memories of

his loved ones. He relocated to Nashville and set to work. In 2000, Michael released American in my Hometown, to strong reviews. He has opened for or toured with country greats such as Clint Black, Reba McEntire, Lee Greenwood, Sawyer Brown and many others. Most recently, Michael has released a new album entitled American Outlaw. His music is self-described as “Hard Rockin’, Boot-Stompin’, and Swampy,” and Michael’s talent as a songwriter shows itself in all its glory on this newly released record. A devoted and passionate Patriot, Michael and his manager purchased the first 5,000 CDs to send

to the troops serving in Afghanistan, and will sell records at cost to anyone planning to ship them to our service members serving overseas.

Now back in California, Michael puts his heart into his music, and feels the most important thing he can do is to put a smile on people’s faces with his music, to write songs that others can relate to - something they can connect with. With a unique sound, soulful voice and heartfelt ambition, Michael is happily creating his own sound. Heavily influenced by icons such as Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, Michael certainly has a future as a highly respected singer/songwriter and performer. The dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) gas have been far too apparent over the years, as countless deaths occur

annually as a result of CO inhalation. Without the proper detection equipment, there’s virtually no way you’d be aware that this colorless, odorless, tasteless gas was affecting you and your family.

Scientifically speaking, carbon monoxide is caused by the incomplete combustion of carbon containing compounds in circumstances where oxygen supply is limited. In other words, low oxygen in the combustion (burning) environment prevents the gaseous byproduct from being turned into carbon dioxide (CO2), and if you’re breathing air right now, you know CO2 is not as dangerous as CO.

The most common “offenders” in the creation of this dangerous gas are all around us: exhaust from cars and other motor vehicles with internal combustion engines, wood-burning stoves, portable camping stoves and other propane-fueled equipment, even house fires.

And to think that despite all the knowledge we have about the dangers of CO, and the fact that there are myriad devices for detection, there are more homes without CO detectors than with.

Invest in a CO detector for your home, keep it up-to-date with battery changes, and listen to it...If the alarm sounds, take it seriously. Your local Ace Hardware store has a number of models to choose from. Right here at www.acehardware.com there are a multitude of options as well, such as the inexpensive yet effective First Alert plug-in model with battery backup (Ace no.5351267). For additional protection, the First Alert combination CO and explosive gas detector (Ace no. 5203351) also alerts of natural gas and propane traces in the air.

Danger never rests, so it’s important your safety measures don’t, either. Take the necessary precautions to keep your family safe 24-7 for enhanced piece of mind.

around the HOUSE

You’ve found that your home has dropped 50% in value over the last few years. Maybe you had lost your job, were relocated,

had health issues or found yourself unable to dig yourself out of your financial hole. Although the thought of a short sale or foreclosure made you shudder, there was no other way out.

With short sales and foreclosures contributing to over 70% of the Real Estate sales in the Temecula Valley, it is obvious that you are not alone. Everyone is saying they are an expert on the subject but how can they be when even the mortgage bank doesn’t know what they are doing? So now what? Is there life after a short sale? Will you be able to purchase again, and if so, when? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you to create a plan so that when the time comes, you will be prepared.

The question that I am beginning to hear more and more is, “When can I realistically start thinking about buying a home again?” Fannie Mae, the largest provider of mortgage money in the US, has a five-year minimum “seasoning requirement” that a buyer must wait through following a foreclosure, whereas a person who sold their home in a short sale only has to wait two years in order to get back into homeownership.  More liberal government lending programs such as FHA have a three-year waiting period

on a foreclosure, and offer financing to people who have had short sales immediately - if they meet certain criteria. Remember that these guidelines are constantly changing. Depending on the circumstances surrounding your short sale, you may find that with 20% down and by meeting other criteria such as having strong credit scores, you might be able to purchase again within 18 to 24 months. It will all go back to your specific situation of hardship and extenuating circumstances such as loss of a job, relocation or medical issues.

Depending on your situation, your credit scores may or may not be in jeopardy. The fact that you had a short sale or foreclosure show on your credit report is not the main reason for a decrease in credit scores; many times it is the length of time that the event took to be resolved. When you are faced with foreclosure, the process could take anywhere from a year to two years, all the while the late payments are being recorded on your credit report. In a short sale situation, the process can be finalized sooner, thus the amount of late payments will be fewer. This, in itself, can help preserve your credit score.

the groups are women. But he has a “vive le difference” theory about those stats.

“I have an equal love for beer and wine,” said Hall, adding that he first got started in the tour business with Sunrider Tours which offers wine tours in the Temecula Valley. “With the wine tours, I’ve noticed that it’s less about the wine, and more about the whole wine-tasting experience. With the beer tours, it’s less about the experience and more about the beer! Maybe that accounts for the difference.”

Come to think of it, Hall added, the perfect holiday gifts might be his-and-her tours—wine-tasting for her, and an awesome, rustic, open-air beer tour for him!

Scavengers offers public and private tour packages. The public tours, which visit three craft breweries and includes food, are offered on Fridays with free pick in Carlsbad from approximately 3:30 -7:30 p.m., and on Saturday with free pickups at Carlsbad and Escondido. ton, it is actually cheaper to transport hay from Long Beach to China than it is, at $50 a ton, to truck it within California from the Imperial Valley to Tulare. How many consumers even know about that when they see prices for milk and cheese and other dairy products jumping so much in price?”

GroceryConnection.org provides spreadsheets of price changes for various items needed for everyday groceries and also for shopping for bulk foods storage which Milne, a member of the Mormon Church, firmly advocates. But she found her promotion of bulk food storage as a way to save foods costs led to the need to educate people about that subject too.

“That’s when I realized that I should hold monthly classes about how to can food and how to best store dry foods,” said Milne, whose evening classes average twenty people per session and are offered for free at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Menifee and at Rancho Community Church in Temecula.

“I think food storage and canning is a necessity in today’s economic climate, but most people don’t have very much knowledge about how to do those things correctly. But they want to learn!”

The website also includes useful tips about food storage via mylar bags (for those who live in tight quarters) versus thirty-gallon barrels with clampdown lids, water filtration systems and guidelines from a self-proclaimed “garden geek.”

Also covered too on the GroceryConnection website is emergency preparedness which can be a real dollar saver in the event of a real disaster or a power outage that lasts more than two hours because safety guidelines suggest that food which has a temperature of more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit should be thrown away.

“Part of being prepared is thinking about the worst that can happen, and then working backwards from that,” said Milne. “As I like to say, you can always live in a tent, but you had better have the knowledge and the means to feed yourself, your family and your neighbors.”

So whether it’s smart grocery shopping, food storage, emergency readiness or just simply stocking up on peanut butter, Shellie Milne, the GroceryConnection gal, is prepared for anything. And she wants you and everyone else to be prepared too.

Riverside County certificates in gardening, composting, and community involvement programs, and is currently completing the University of California’s Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners program.

Making it as easy as possible for home garden lovers, Girasole Backyard Gardens provides the installation of four-foot-by-eight-foot vegetable beds which are built from pine or redwood for in-ground or raised bed set-ups. Added to the beds are planting mix and irrigation systems, and then Cannella plants the beds with seeds and/or transplants from a list of herbs and vegetables that the client has selected.

It doesn’t matter if the garden beds are set up in estate-sized properties or smaller housing lots, according to Cannella, adding that most tract houses have room for at least one bed from which year round produce can be rotated seasonally.

“Of course, the number of beds needed is determined by your family size and available space, but even a single bed will provide a nice supply of a wide variety of vegetables and herbs,” he explained. “For example, in a section of one bed, I can plant basil, cherry tomato and sweet peppers, but by the next season, it may be arugula or chard or radishes in that spot.”

Installation costs are between $200 to $500 for the first bed depending whether it is an in-ground or a raised bed made from pine or if it is a raised bed made from redwood, but costs for additional beds installed at the same time can be shaved by as much as $100 per bed, said Cannella.

And depending upon what kind of garden bed a client chooses, it can only take a year or less for the start-up costs to pay for themselves with savings on food costs, he added.

After installation, the garden is kept producing and healthy by affordable weekly maintenance and sustainable, organic, chemical free methods.

“Once the bed(s) are in place, we come out every week to succession plant which spreads the harvest over each season or we change out the vegetables based on the season. We adjust the irrigation system, weed and fertilize using natural products as needed, and harvest,” Cannella said, adding the weekly maintenance fee of $25 for the beds was comparable to “what someone would pay for a Community Supported Agriculture membership [in which members receive a box of seasonal produce each week from a local farmer] or if they had to buy organic foods at the market.”

Backyard gardening will be an increasing trend as people look for ways to save money, eat healthier, and eat local, said Cannella enthusiastically.

But he also thinks that it’s time for people to re-evaluate another staple of suburbia, the lawn.

“Lawns are useless. Think about it. First you plant the grass—which you can’t eat—then you spend money watering it and feeding it, then you have to spend the time to mow it, and a lot of those lawn clippings end up in the landfills,” he said. “It would be so much smarter to put in vegetable gardens. Even in the front yards. That would be beautiful.”

ENCORE

Many of our readers have probably heard of, visited, or participated in the annual Murrieta Field of Honor.

2011 marked the third year this growing field of American flags graces the grassy area behind Murrieta City Hall. A joint venture between the Rotary Club of Murrieta and the City, this awe-inspiring, patriotic program honors veterans, active duty military and first responders. One of the leaders behind the Field of Honor, Frank Donahoe, feels it has grown to proportions beyond its original intent. “I can’t see the Field of Honor ever ending,” says Frank. “Beyond honoring, it has also become a learning tool.” A learning tool to the more than 1,600 fifth-graders in the Murrieta Valley USD, as a start. Hundreds of kids arrive daily during the week of Veterans Day to the Field, where there is a section containing all the different flags of our nation throughout history, as well as the different permanent monuments in the City Center, where the Field is staged. A somber section of flags commemorates local individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. Volunteers lead kids through the site, pointing out different areas of interest and giving details and history lessons, in a setting that perhaps gives these kids a perspective they otherwise might not have.

While we are waxing patriotic, it would seem appropriate to give kudos to a local business that is going above and beyond to give something back to our active duty military. The owners of Best Buy RV in Murrieta have started a nonprofit organization called F4-RV. This is a program that allows active duty military that are returning from deployments, or preparing to ship out on deployments to use an RV with no rental costs. Owner Rory Smith and his wife Sarah, who is active duty military, came up with the idea when she returned from her third deployment. The family was in serious need of some time together, without the distractions of everyday life. An RV trip was just the answer. They realized what a wonderful R&R vacation this could be for deploying service members and their families, but they know that RV ownership may be out of reach for many. F4-RV provides military families a motorhome at no charge – the only thing they have to pay for is insurance, fuel and food. The RV is stocked with dishes, silverware, a coffee pot and other essential items. Best Buy RV also rents to the public, and all proceeds from these rentals fund the no-cost program for our service members. What a great gift for those that sacrifice so much.
