was fascinating. I also didn’t know that WSM meant ‘We Shield Millions’ and how the insurance industry played into its history. I watched twice last night, and I feel grateful Ken Burns made this series. It’s like a religious experience.” CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis: “Gaining a deeper understanding of how the technological breakthroughs of the time – specifically the phonograph and radio – were key in helping country become mass appeal was one of my favorite parts of last night’s episode. It was an important, detailed history and teed up every episode that will come after, which I have already binged. There are many tear-inducing moments throughout, and anyone who watches will have a new level of appreciation and passion for the music we already love so much.” KVOO/Tulsa night jock Tanner Messer: “The influence of Jimmie Rodgers on Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Ernest Tubb and others speaks volumes as to why he is the father of country music. Just when I begin to think I’m getting a grasp on the timeline of country music, Ken Burns comes along and says, ‘but wait, there’s more!’” KFFF/Omaha morning host Ritch Cassidy: “Knowing and following Ken Burns’ previous work, I knew it would be in-depth, but I had no idea the history the first episode would cover in terms of instrument origin and cultures dating back to the late 1600s. I’m excited to watch how Burns presents how different forms of country music were born and how every region brought their own style of music to the forefront to sew the fabric of country music as we know it today.” WNCY/Appleton-Green Bay, WI MD Charli McKenzie: “Last night was a great introduction to Country Music, and I cannot wait to watch the rest of the series. I never knew the story about Jimmie Rodgers needing to lay down in a bed during singing because of his battle with Tuberculosis. What intense imagery.”

WIRK/West Palm Beach morning host Tim Leary: “Hearing about AP Carter driving all over the area in search of songs that had not yet been copyrighted so they had something to record was amazing. Maybelle Carter inventing the scratch way of playing the guitar was also a cool history lesson. I had no idea Bonnie and Clyde would stop during their crime spree to buy Jimmie Rodgers records. How did Ken Burns and his team find out about that? Will I watch the other seven episodes? Nah, I’m good. Kidding! Of course I’m watching! If I could, I’d blow vacation days just to see it.” EMI Nashvile Dir./Southwest Promotion John Trapane: “The idea of Saturday night and Sunday morning was there in the beginning with Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family. These two pillars of our format are very much still influencing what we are doing. Take any country song, and it fits into one of these two categories almost 100 years later. Watching and seeing social networks blow up with comments and realizing that we are a very small part – but still a part – of this ongoing story and moving country music forward makes me proud.” Tune in to episode two, “Hard Times” tonight (9/16) on PBS, or stream the complete series here. –Monta Vaden

Soundly Music’s Aubrie Sellers puts an industry spin on the artist interview:As a Nashville kid, I got to listen to a lot of the good stuff on WSM. Then as a pre-teen, I loved to jam out to pop on 102.5 The Party and 107.5 The River.I was driving down 8th Ave. S. and “Light Of Day” came on SiriusXM The Highway. I was alone, but screamed anyway. It just sounds different coming through the radio. I had just played Watershed Festival in

Washington at this beautiful venue, and I had dry socket from getting my wisdom teeth out. So, on the way to our next station visits, my poor team had to get a dentist to open the office during off hours. When I got there, she said she had a dream that a musician was going to visit her office, so I guess she’s a psychic dentist! My boyfriend (and guitar player) of four and a half years, Ethan Ballinger, is an incredible musician and perfect road companion. He keeps me sane and makes me feel like I’ve got home with me all the time. I am a major junk food junkie. I’m trying to be healthier now, but I love those white powdered doughnuts and Reese’s sticks… and BBQ sunflower seeds… basically everything.I wish I could have dinner with my grandfather, and I’d have bacon and eggs and biscuits with peanut butter and syrup like we used to eat for breakfast. My new record Far From Home is a personal record with a gritty, cinematic garage-country sound. I co-produced it with Frank Liddell at Sonic Ranch in TX, and it has 12 songs that are close to my heart.I wish I’d written “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve. The melody and the sentiment behind that song are so perfect. It never gets old.I can’t go on the road without my kindle and journal. I love to read, and it’s amazing to have an entire library at my fingertips. I need something to write in to stay sane. I hate being asked, “What’s it like having famous parents.” I just watched all of Homecoming on Amazon and thought it was really great. I can’t wait for the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; that show is perfection.

explains Michaels. “I came to the office Saturday and Sunday, but I still want to be here to speak directly to the team going into the week.” He has an 8am HR meeting before taking a call with his consultant about ratings. By 9am, Michaels has the new Nielsen ratings downloaded. At 9:30am, he begins scheduling music for both KUZZ and sister KRJK. “I like to listen to new albums when I’m in my office,” notes Michaels. “It’s my life hack for keeping up with music.” Next, Michaels begins preparations for his air shift. “Show prep is still very important to me, because I am a live and local on-air personality in addition to being PD,” he says. Michaels gathers artist and pop culture information and local news and event details for his show. His midday shift lasts until 3pm, after which he helps the afternoon personality outline her show. Meetings with the GM regarding ratings and a discussion with a sales person follow. At 4pm, he takes a phone meeting with a client about an ongoing

endorsement deal before revising the spot and sending the client new audio. He is out the door by 5pm. “Ratings were not as strong as we would have liked, but overall the day was good,” remarks Michaels. “I did take a request

call during the lunch hour from a woman who vividly described what she wanted her boyfriend to do with her when he got home. I had to bleep most of it when replaying her request for Luke Bryan’s ‘Knockin’ Boots.’ Oh, and she was 70.” Just another manic Monday. Tuesday: Reconciling the prior day’s on-air logs and sorting through email before his 8am weekly sales meeting are the morning priorities. The weekly meeting with his midday talent is at 8:30, followed by a 9:30 with the morning show. Michaels also spends time confirming a phoner with Florida Georgia Line for the next day’s morning show and triangulating staff vacation schedules. After his air shift, Michaels meets with the Dir./Promotions concerning the California Mid State Fair. “This somehow led into an impromptu discussion of female airplay in country music,” Michaels says. At 5pm, he hits the road for the two-hour drive to Los Angeles to meet with his Capitol rep and attend a Hootie & the Blowfish concert. “In any other industry, you wouldn’t classify this as work, but attending shows, gathering content from artists and spending time with our partners at the record labels is part of it,” says Michaels. Wednesday: A new set of challenges pops up, as shortly after the morning show completes their FGL phoner, the power to the entire building goes out. “I had to get the generator going and bring all the stations back online when it kicked in,” says Michaels. “This set my schedule back quite a bit, but it’s one of those things you have to handle when it arises. I had the stations up quickly, production rooms back online within an hour and office phones back up around the same time, so I was able to start returning music calls by 9am.” Despite the setback, Michaels is able to move through his day checking off client production needs, sales staff meetings and the weekly promotions staff meeting in addition to his air shift and music scheduling. “Today was a long day, and I was still returning calls from record reps as I drove home,” notes Michaels. Thursday: The game of catch-up continues as Michaels returns calls from reps while scheduling music early in the day. His

morning show meeting at 9:30 precedes a music meeting with MD Kenn McCloud. “Kenn was on vacation this week, but he still wants to be a part of the meeting,” explains Michaels. “I sent him my thoughts via text, and he responded with his considerations. It was typically atypical for us. We do what we have to do to make it work, and I am thankful for technology that lets us do that.” After his midday shift, Michaels meets with his night jock, schedules music, returns additional phone calls and emails, meets with the GM about personnel issues and vacation time and handles more production before leaving for the day. Friday: A day similar to Thursday, but with the addition of ensuring everything is ready for the weekend. “Multiple days worth of music scheduling is in order each Friday, plus creating the Weekend Update memo that I send to let the staff know about what music we are adding, which promotions we are running and what to expect for the coming week,” says Michaels. He attends a client lunch, goes over the logs for the weekend, solidifies the vacation calendar he has been massaging all week, dials in to a conference call for the CRS Agenda Committee and works on the station’s social media strategy after his air shift. Michaels also reviews the weekend calendar and assures all on-location remotes and events are properly documented and staffed before leaving. Week End: “I’d like to say that this was a regular week, but I’m not certain there’s any such thing,” laughs Michaels. “We take it as it comes. Yes, there are the must-dos, but there’s no way to predict a power outage, a last minute production change or a other short notice requests.” What did Michaels learn from having his week documented? “I didn’t expect you to be all up in my business the entire time,” jokes Michaels. “But, seriously, this was a great exercise. It showed me where I spend most of my time and helped me make a conscious effort to balance my duties. “As an on-air PD, I am responsible for the product, the brand, the image and the people. The on-air personalities are charged with being the face of our station with listeners. I am responsible for organizing those efforts and being the face to people within the industry. My duties range from clerical to technical to creative, and to say I am proud of the work I do would be an understatement.” Reach Michaels here. –Monta Vaden
