The CGS Annual General Meeting was held at the end of May, when Paul Bush OBE, was appointed as the organisation’s new Chairman.

Paul, who leads Scotland’s major events strategy with VisitScotland and EventScotland, takes over from Michael Cavanagh, who completed his tenure, following an eight-year stint leading the organisation in the build-up to Glasgow 2014.

Paul, who has been on the CGS Board for the last four years, was Team Scotland Chef de Mission in 2006 when we had our most successful offshore Games to date and will now lead the strategic direction of the organisation for Gold Coast 2018.

Delighted to have been appointed by the member sports, Paul Bush said: “It is a huge honour and privilege to have been appointed as Chairman of CGS. I am passionate about Scotland and Scottish sport and I look forward to working closely with the professional staff and Board to build on the momentum of Glasgow 2014, further enhancing the strategic, financial and commercial position of CGS.

“I am committed to effective partnership working with the member sports, to ensure they and their athletes are best placed to enjoy continued success at future Commonwealth Games.

“Scotland has a strong reputation in the Commonwealth Games movement and I look forward to representing CGS at international level, to ensure we retain and extend our sphere of influence on the world stage.”

Paul will be supported in his new role by the newly elected Vice Chair, Maureen Campbell. Maureen has been Chair of Scottish Swimming since 2006 and is Chief Executive of Falkirk Community Trust. She is also a former swimmer and

represented Scotland at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

Two new Board Directors were also voted in by the 24 member sports in attendance.

Alasdair MacLennan, President of Scottish Cycling and cycling team manager for Team Scotland at the last four Commonwealth Games has been appointed for a four year term. With more than 40 years in the sport as an athlete, coach and administrator he is looking forward to sharing his experience with the CGS Board.

Susan Jackson, 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in shooting and former CGS Athletes’ Representative, was also appointed. In her professional life, Susan is a Chartered Accountant and runs her family business. Previously she worked in the corporate finance team at Deloittes for 12 years before joining the Winning Scotland Foundation as a senior director.

Outgoing Chairman, Michael Cavanagh was thanked by the sports in attendance for the outstanding job done and in response he said: “It has been a privilege, not just to serve as CGS Chairman, but to have had the good fortune to lead this great sporting family at such an exciting and successful time in our history.

“CGS has come a very long way over the last eight years and it has been fantastic to see the extensive interest and competition for the Board positions to support the organisation going forwards.

“I would like to wish Paul, Maureen, Susan, Alasdair and the other Board members all the very best for the future.”

NEW FACESON BOARD

Chairman’s view The first three months in the role have been extremely busy and have given me a great flavour for what is to come over the next four years and the challenges that lie ahead. In July I participated in the European CGAs inspection visit to Durban and a chance to see first-hand the proposed venues and format for the 2022 Games Bid, which would be a first for Africa. Durban is situated just below the equator on the Indian Ocean. It is a beautiful city with a strong sporting heritage and experience of hosting the Cricket, Rugby and Football World Cups in recent years. Similar to Glasgow, Durban presents a compact Games model with good use of existing facilities and very little new-build required. Our hosts were very competent, enthusiastic and confident they can deliver a great Games. However there are a number of issues still to be resolved around the sports programme and athlete quotas, which will be tackled at the General Assembly in Auckland. The other main challenge for organisers and visiting teams alike is it will be the first ever Winter Games, based on the dates proposed. During our visit we witnessed cool, windy and very wet weather, coupled with a lack of daylight hours. September 2nd will see one of the most important General Assemblies for the Commonwealth Games movement in many years, with several key issues to be discussed, as well as important Board elections to be held. CGS is delighted to be supporting both Louise Martin CBE and Michael Cavanagh with nominations for CGF President and Vice President respectively. The final preparations for our Youth Team heading out to Samoa have gone well and I am sure that with the committed support of our experienced team staff, led by Elinor Middlemiss as General Team Manager, they will do Scotland proud. I look forward to catching up with many of you again soon at our Annual Awards Dinner on 3 October.

Commonwealth Games running track puts down new rootsIn Glasgow around 350 youngsters took part in the opening event of the city’s Anniversary Games – a completely free 11-day sporting festival organised to mark the one-year anniversary of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

As part of the celebrations, the new Commonwealth Games running track at Glasgow Club Crownpoint Sports Complex was officially opened - the same track that was used at Hampden Park during the Commonwealth Games. Memorably, it was the scene of Usain Bolt’s historic gold medal winning performance in the 4x100metre relay with Jamaica not to mention Team Scotland’s first gold medal on the track since 1994 by Para-Sport sprinter Libby Clegg and guide runner Mikhail Huggins.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council was joined on a tour of the facility by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and chair of sportscotland Louise Martin, Michael Cavanagh, Past Chairman of CGS and newly selected Youth Team Scotland long jumper, Rachel Alexander from Glasgow.

Crownpoint is at the heart of the athletics community in Glasgow and the new running track will ensure it remains so for years to come – a real and lasting legacy from the best ever Games. It will play an important role in developing the next generation of medal winners with the support of two fantastic local clubs in Shetlletson Harriers and Red Star athletics clubs.

Glasgow 2014 – one year on

On 23rd July, people across the country took part in sports events and celebrations and shared their memories of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the legacy it has left for Scottish sport.

Charlie Flynn looks backIt was brilliant! Knowing that all your friends and family, the whole country was watching. That was a huge boost for me.

When I got gold it was just job done! It was three years building up, non-stop training and it all just paid off and when you got it officially you just thought ‘I’ve arrived.’ I was proud of everybody who’d helped me get there and it was as much their win as it was mine. It was a bit crazy, it all went a bit mental! The highlight was on the podium. Dick McTaggart – he’s a real hero of mine – I’d seen him about but I’d never met him and when he gave me my medal it was brilliant.

“Our club’s now booming with all the youngsters coming through. Everybody’s in sport now, the Games were a pure catalyst.

“I was a confident person before but it’s more that you believe in it now. You’re in charge of your own fate, it’s up to you where you’re going to be in the future, so just grab it with both hands!

“The Youth Games were my first multi-sport tournament and it was great to see the other sports and the other athletes and travel in a big group. It was a great experience – character building, meeting new people and ultimately winning medals.

“It was good as I learned countries have different boxing styles and it was good to get a taste of it all before the senior Games kicked off.

At the Youth Games I got beaten in the final, I thought I had won every single round and I was gutted for ages. But then I just thought, ‘keep your chin up, you’ve got the main Games coming up, just keep the head focussed and learn to accept defeat and move on. That was the biggest thing I learned”.

2018 selection policy agreedFollowing a performance review after the Glasgow 2014 Games and consideration of the proposed Gold Coast sports programme, a draft Team Scotland general selection policy has been developed for the 2018 Games.

This policy is based on our aspiration to have our best ever overseas Games, bettering the team’s outstanding performance in Melbourne in 2006 of 29 medals including 11 gold.

A minimum top six performance (based on previous Commonwealth Games results) will be required for selection for 2018, supported by a minimum number of places guaranteed for each sport.

Consultation on the policy will continue, taking into account any changes made at the CGF General Assembly in September this year. This will include final confirmation of the specific events to be included in some sports, including the Para-Sports and the entry procedures in accordance with any quotas which may be introduced.

It is anticipated that the final version will be signed off at the end of November 2015 and sport specific policies developed thereafter, with the selection period commencing in early 2017. Copies of the final policy will be published on the CGS website.

UPDATE

Like Scotland, Australia has been proudly represented at every Commonwealth Games since their inception in 1930. Gold Coast 2018 will be the fifth time Australia has staged the Games, and the first time it will be held in a regional Australian city. The Games will be held from 4 to 15 April 2018.

Gold Coast planning ramps upIn March 2015 CGS CEO, Jon Doig and Games Team Operations Manager, Elinor Middlemiss, made their second visit to Gold Coast, Australia as part of Team Scotland’s Games planning.

The visit combined further exploration of potential Holding Camp sites and Scotland House venues, along with Games venue visits and meeting with key Games Organising Committee officials. It was encouraging to see the many changes from the initial visit in October 2014 and to visit sites in the southern Brisbane area for the first time, just 45 minutes from the Games Village.

It was particularly exciting to see in this cluster area, the new cycling Velodrome arising from the ground and the extensive shooting venues, both sports in which Scotland has been strong in recent years. Much progress has also been made at the new Games Village site and it was clear from briefings given that this would be an excellent setting for athletes to relax and prepare for competition. It is also central to most venues and in close proximity to where travelling supporters would be based. Travel on the new G:link light rail from the Village, past a number of sports venues back to Surfers Paradise and the Broadbeach area proved an ideal way to travel.

Jon Doig said: “The mixture of new and existing venues in this unique environment, combined with the Australian passion for sport look set to ensure that Gold Coast 2018 will be a Games to remember. It will have a unique Gold Coast flavour, whilst building on all the experience gained from Glasgow 2014.”

A further site visit is now planned involving Scottish governing body performance directors in early November, specifically

to progress planning on the pre-Games Holding Camp.

CGI join the TeamCGS is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with CGI, the world’s 5th largest independent IT services company, for the next four years culminating in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, Australia. CGI will be the official Systems Integration, BPS and IT Outsourcing partner of Team Scotland, and has also extended its sponsorship across Team England and Team Wales. Tim Gregory, President of CGI UK, said: “When we started talking to the teams, we found that their values and commitment to developing talent were very closely aligned with those of CGI. We look forward to ‘travelling’ with Team Scotland on their journey to the Gold Coast and bringing the Games to life for our clients and members.” In the UK, CGI employs around 6000 professionals with Scottish offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Jon Doig, CGS CEO said: “At Team Scotland we have an ethos that puts our team members at the heart of everything we do and we believe this makes a significant contribution to our success on the international stage. We are delighted that CGI, which also has a parallel track record of commitment to its members, has come on board and pledged its support to Team Scotland at this early stage in our preparations for Gold Coast 2018.

“We very much look forward to working with CGI and contributing to their exciting member engagement strategy, as we continue our drive for success in 2018 and beyond.” A number of workshops have already been held with all of the home countries attending to explore joint areas of activation. We were also delighted to welcome representatives of CGI to our Commonwealth Youth Games team announcement in June.

Everything from a dancing teacake to a previously missing mascot are encapsulated in a touring Commonwealth Games exhibition which fittingly opened on the one-year anniversary of Glasgow 2014.

“Hosts and Champions: Scotland in the Commonwealth Games” is packed with photographs, clothes and assorted artefacts charting more than 80 years of Scotland’s games participation.

Richard Haynes, academic curator of the exhibition, said: “The Hosts and Champions exhibition has been a real hit in the towns and cities it has visited so far. It includes lots of recent memorabilia from Glasgow 2014 and it continues to grow as many people have come along and donated items they have from past games.”

Jon Doig, Commonwealth Games Scotland Chief Executive, said: “Team Scotland’s achievements at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games caught the imagination of the nation and we are delighted this exhibition from our archive gives people the length and breadth of the country the opportunity to share in these memories and find out more about what makes the Commonwealth Games so special.”

The free exhibition, developed with the support of CGS and Legacy 2014, is curated by the University of Stirling Archives. It is on display in the MacRobert Arts Centre daily from 9am to 7pm now until Friday 11 September. For future dates and venues: http://libguides.stir.ac.uk/projects/hostsandchamps

How it all beganThe Commonwealth Youth Games concept was created by Scotland as a development opportunity to give athletes under the age of 18 an international multi-sport Games experience. It bridges the gap between young athletes competing in their own sport specific events and the often daunting first experience of a senior multi-sport Games. The idea was endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Federation and the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in August 2000 as part of Scotland’s Millennium celebrations.

Where it has been heldThe Games quickly proved to be a great success and the second Games followed in Bendigo, Australia in 2004 then Pune, India in 2008. It was then agreed that smaller nations who were unable to host the main Games should be encouraged to bid to host the Youth Games. Isle of Man were the hosts of the fourth edition and the Games

were held in 2011 to avoid a clash with the London 2012 Olympics. It is now the turn of Samoa to host the 2015 Youth Games.

Scotland’s Track RecordScotland has won a total of 124 medals so far at the Commonwealth Youth Games. However the number of participating countries, sports and allocated athlete places has varied significantly from Games to Games making direct comparisons difficult. What is more important is the number of athletes who progress to compete with distinction for Team Scotland at future Commonwealth Games.

To date 66 Scottish athletes from a total of 250 have progressed from the Youth to the senior Commonwealth Games with 16 going on to win a total of 26 medals for Scotland. These include runner Lynsey Sharp; swimmers Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick; shooter Jennifer McIntosh; badminton players Kirsty Gilmour and Imogen Bankier; boxers Josh Taylor and Charlie Flynn and gymnasts Daniel Keatings, and Adam Cox.

At the last Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man, Youth Team Scotland won 22 medals (5 gold, 6 silver 11 bronze).

Samoa 2015This year’s Games will start with the Opening Ceremony on Saturday 5th September followed by a training day on the 6th. The action will then get underway 7-11th September followed by the Closing Ceremony. An important aspect of the Games will be the cultural programme, held throughout the week for athletes to experience Pacific life.

Information on what they can expect there, along with team building exercises and collection of their Youth Team Scotland kit was all on the agenda for the 28-strong team in an action packed day that also saw the announcement of the team’s flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony.

CGS Chairman, Paul Bush OBE announced that 16 year old swimmer Craig McLean had been chosen saying: “To be named as flagbearer for Youth Team Scotland is a fantastic honour and Craig’s selection is a direct reflection of his performances over the last few years. Not only is Craig a fantastic athlete but his attitude and commitment to his fellow team members makes him an excellent role model.” Livingston swimmer Craig McLean (16) will represent Youth Team Scotland in six backstroke, freestyle and relay events in Samoa. He is a multiple British and Scottish Age Group medallist and record holder and

this year became the 2015 British Junior and Scottish Schools Champion in 100m Freestyle. Craig has broken an incredible 48 Scottish Records and 7 British Records since 2012.

Craig was voted as flagbearer by his Scotland team-mates, after a shortlist of three was selected prior to the Team Camp. Fellow shortlisted nominees, athlete George Evans (Inverness) and boxer Kieran McMaster (Kilmarnock) will walk behind Craig into the Opening Ceremony, followed by the rest of the team. A delighted Craig McLean said: “It will be a huge honour to be able to wave Scotland’s flag going into the arena, to lead the country at the start of the Commonwealth Youth Games. It will just be a fantastic experience - once in a lifetime. Coming here I didn’t think it would be me so it’s unbelievable that I’ve been picked and it’s the athletes that voted for me.

With just two weeks to go to departure for Samoa, athletes and staff gathered in Stirling for their Team Camp and a chance to get to know each other ahead of their journey to the Youth Games.

Craig McLean to carry the flag

“I’m excited to be going out to Samoa, I’ve never been anywhere near and I’m looking forward to racing against the rest of the Commonwealth and hopefully going on to the next Commonwealth Games which is my main goal. It will be a great experience and hopefully a stepping stone. I aim to learn everything I can and then I’ll be able to progress and hopefully be able to move on to the senior team if all goes to plan.

The selection and announcement of the flagbearer is a longstanding tradition, and Craig will follow in the footsteps of Louise Carroll (hockey), Gemma Nicol (athletics), Lisa Glover (athletics) and Tom Holligan (athletics), who carried the flag at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games.
