KEEPING YOU INFORMED

Dear Residents,

It is my pleasure to share with you an exciting initiative. As

mentioned in Mayor Watson’s State of the City address in

January of this year, the City of Ottawa will be organizing a

time capsule in celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial

anniversary.

Each of Ottawa’s 23 wards will contribute a memento that is

truly iconic of our communities to only be opened again in

2067 (Canada’s 200th anniversary).

This is an incredible opportunity to give our next generation a

glimpse into Stittsville as it is today. What a thrill it will be for

someone to open a time capsule 50 years from now and

experience just what our daily lives look like. Better still,

imagine the nostalgia on our children`s faces when they are

reminded in 50 years of their youth!

I would like to take this moment to invite all residents to share

with me their ideas for what they believe Stittsville’s

contribution to the time capsule should be. The memento

should be unique and memorable and reflective of Stittsville.

All items must be submitted to my office no later than

September 22nd so that they may be presented to the City

Archivist for the September 29th deadline. Items must also be

able to fit in the capsule which is 24" wide x 36" high x 11"

deep.

Some ideas for items include:

medals and commemorative coins

documents and other publications on quality paper

black-and-white photographic prints

Cotton and polyester textiles

It is important to keep in mind a few details when choosing

your item:

If you include Flash drives (USB), CDs or DVDs, the

equipment to play them back may not be available when

the time capsule is opened

If you include a Smartphone or other artifact DO NOT

include the battery

August 19th Pancake Breakfast in Blackstone Park

I would like to invite all residents in the Blackstone community or otherwise to a delicious breakfast I

am hosting in Blackstone Community Park. On August 19th from 8:00-10:00 AM, stop by to ask any

City-related questions you may have and feel free to grab a bite to eat!

Enbridge will be on hand to prepare the pancakes and Safer Roads Ottawa will be in attendance once

again to help provide some neat bicycle safety tips to take advantage of before the school year

begins! Don’t forget to bring your bike and a helmet!

I am thrilled to offer these community breakfasts as an opportunity to connect and relax with your

neighbours, friends, family, and me - your City Councillor about any topics of conversation you may

have.

I hope that that many residents take the time to stop by as it is certain to be a great time and D-E-

licious.

Big Bike Ride Have you ever seen a large bike with 30 people riding around town blowing their horns? Have you

ever wanted to climb aboard one to raise awareness for a worthwhile cause? Well, this is your

opportunity to do so!

I am happy to announce that once again on August 15th, I am participating in the 2017 Heart &

Stroke Big Bike Ride, presented by Dairy

Farmers of Canada.

This year, I will be joining Brown’s Independent

Grocer as we ride into Stittsville Main Street at a

start time of 12:30. I would like to send my

thanks to Todd Brown and his team for

welcoming me on their bike and all other teams who are participating in the Big Bike Ride this year.

If you are taking part, remember to bring your noisemakers and bring your pedaling power but

beyond all else, bring your presence!

The Big Bike is an exciting and enjoyable fundraising event as individuals come together aboard a

bicycle built for 30 to raise awareness for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

To join or sponsor a team, simply click on the team link here and then click "Join our Team" and

complete the registration.

There is no registration or minimum fundraising fee but I encourage everybody to raise as many

dollars as possible to support the Heart & Stroke foundation. All the funds directly support the Heart

and Stroke Foundation in its goal of reducing Canadians rate of death from heart disease and stroke

by 25% by 2020.

With your cooperation, I am sure we can make the big bike ride a BIG success.

Thank you and I look forward to supporting Heart and Stroke with you!

Zoning By-law Amendment Proposal for 5615 Fernbank

On Tuesday, August 22nd, the City`s

Planning Committee will be considering a

Zoning By-law amendment proposal for

Zoning - 5615 Fernbank Road (formerly

known as 5786 Fernbank Road) to permit a

residential subdivision with school site,

Emergency Services facility and transit

station.

The site is a vacant 12-hectare parcel

within the Fernbank Crossing subdivision.

It is bounded by Fernbank Road to the

south, Cope Drive to the north, Robert

Grant Avenue to the west and vacant land

to the east that will be developed as future

phases of the Blackstone subdivision The

lands form the fourth and final phase of the

Fernbank Crossing subdivision.

Page 4: Councillor’s View NSIDE T I · 8/8/2017  · Keeping You Informed Page 3 welcoming me on their bike and all other teams who are participating in the Big Bike Ride this year. If

Page 4

Keeping You Informed

The Fernbank Crossing subdivision received draft approval on February 2, 2012, and previous

phases have been registered, with the third phase of development currently under construction. This

final phase of the Fernbank Crossing subdivision proposes the development of approximately 107

detached dwellings, four blocks for townhouses, an elementary school site, paramedic post and

transit station with a park-and-ride facility.

To view the report in full, please click here. For questions or to provide comments, please contact

myself and City Planner Kathy Rygus [email protected] or 613-580-2424 x 28318.

Fernbank Road Closure

Please note that Fernbank Road will be closed from Shea to Robert Grant between August 14th and

August 28th.

The contractor, Taggart Construction,

will be installing a box culvert across

the roadway for future storm water

management.

Notification signs will be posted in

advance of the closure with additional

signs posted during the affected period.

Local and emergency vehicle access will

be maintained. A detour will be signed

from Shea>Abbott>Robert Grant.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Intermittent section closures at Carp Road Park and Ride

Please note that sections of the Carp Road Park and Ride will be closed intermittently until early

September 2017 weather dependent, due to upgrade work being done at the facility.

The work will take place in stages during the daytime, and the facility will remain operational at

reduced capacity throughout. The upgrades include surface paving, additional lighting, concrete

repairs, a new bus pad and bike racks. Directional signage will guide pedestrians during sidewalk

repairs.

The upgraded paved surface of the site will hopefully allow for an improved customer experience, by

eliminating mud and puddles while delineating accessibility and other spaces with pavement

markings. The number of parking spots will also be increased, from approximately 115 spaces to

approximately 150 spaces.

Many residents rely on this Park and Ride for service and the increased number of spaces will help to

accommodate demand.

For convenience in the meantime, users are encouraged to park at Canadian Tire Centre, Terry Fox

or Eagleson Park and Rides. For more information on these please visit here -

http://www.octranspo.com/routes/park_and_ride

information about traffic and travel planning, visit the City’s Traffic Report on ottawa.ca or follow

the City’s traffic account on Twitter.

Lamitta’s Wish – Fire Fighters’ Car Wash

On August 26th, residents are requested to stop by the

D`arcy McGees on Terry Fox (655 Terry Fox Drive)

between 11:00-2:00 where a car wash is taking place

in support of Lamitta’s Wish.

Lamitta is a young Stittsville girl with cerebral palsy

looking to fund an important surgery to give her the

ability to walk.

The selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery is an expensive

procedure which costs upwards of $130,000.

Residents all year have been coming together to help

raise funds for this brave and joyful girl in whatever

ways they can including carwashes, bakesales, and

fundraisers. Last weekend’s bottle drive was a great

success and managed to raise $621! Wow!

Lamitta’s surgery is currently scheduled for September

and it is not too late to help out.

Local firefighters from Station 81 have generously agreed to be on site and provide a firetruck to

hose down the suds and staff from D`arcy McGee’s and Swiss Chalet have generously agreed to

fund a BBQ in support of the charity and provide staff to help wash the cars.

Arohafest

I would like to take a moment to share with residents a

special artistically-themed event put together by one of

Stittsville’s own.

Arohafest celebrates the arts of India in Canada through

the power of dance, music, and art. The event will take

place this weekend, August 12/13 at the Shenkman Arts

Centre (245 Centrum Blvd in Orleans).

The two-day festival includes music workshops, yoga

classes, dance performances and more! Best of all, it’s

free!

I highly encourage all residents with an interest in the arts

to take an opportunity to stop by. For more information,

SVA Movie Night Recap

I would like to take a moment to thank all residents for coming out to

enjoy the Stittsville Village Association’s “Cinema Under the Stars” event

on July 22nd and for your generous contributions to the Stittsville Food

Bank

The numbers are in and $555 were raised in donations to the Food Bank

to help local families in need. It really goes to show what we can

accomplish when the community comes together!

My office was thrilled to be one of the sponsors of the evening and look forward to potentially being

a part of more movie nights in the future.

I would like to thank the entire Stittsville Village Association, particularly Sarah Rozema-Seaton who

took the lead on ensuring this event was a great success! For all of your hard work, thank you.

MOSAÏCANADA 150 / Gatineau 2017

For the month of August until October 15th, Gatineau is hosting a beautiful spectacle

horticultural event in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Stop by Jacques-Cartier Park any day from 10:00-7:00 and witness incredible floral mosaics

created by some of Canada’s greatest horticulturalists.

The event is absolutely free and spans over a kilometer, taking approximately 90 minutes to

truly enjoy the visit.

The theme of the exhibit reflects 150 years of history, values, culture and arts in Canada

with 40 uniquely created arrangements.

I had the great pleasure of stopping by to see

the works myself and can safely attest that it is

well worth the trip! I highly encourage all

residents to do the same.

Household Hazardous Waste is any corrosive, flammable or poisonous waste. These types of

products contaminate water and landfills and should never be poured down the drain or put out with

your regular garbage.

Last year, 17,962 participants dropped off 646 tonnes of material at the City’s household hazardous

waste depots. This represents an 8% increase in participation and a 16% increase in material

collected over 2015 rates.

Products to be dropped off include: (maximum 100 litres by volume)

• Aerosol containers

• Propane cylinders

• Disinfectants

• Fluorescent bulbs/tubes

• Fire extinguishers

• Fertilizers and pesticides

• Mercury switches/thermometers

• Needles and syringes

• Pharmaceuticals

• Paints and coatings

• Oven and window cleaners

• Pool chemicals

Liquid or hazardous waste from industrial, commercial and institutional sources will not be

accepted. The one-day Household Hazardous Waste Depots are for residential household waste

only and is exclusive for City of Ottawa residents. You can also return certain paint products and

Ottawa Police celebrate their one-year anniversary using the

Automatic License Plate Recognition system

The Ottawa Police Service began using the Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system in

August of 2016. The device assists police in ensuring road safety by identifying a variety of

Highway Traffic Act (HTA) infractions, including stolen license plates and suspended or unlicensed

drivers.

To date, Traffic Enforcement of the Ottawa Police Service has achieved the following results after

approximately 12 months of operation:

140 suspended / prohibited drivers

255 unlicensed drivers

1706 long term expired validations

4 stolen vehicles/ plates

2 persons on warrant

Numerous other HTA and Criminal Code offences

The success of the project has led to a second unit being added to the fleet for the Traffic Services

Unit. The next phase of the project will involve making available an ALPR vehicle to OPS Frontline

Patrol Services, in order to increase enforcement throughout the city.

Several months ago, I had the opportunity to work with the OPS and Safer Roads Ottawa monitoring

Hazeldean Road, in front of Imagination Station Day Care, during the afternoon school bus drop off

schedule. Concerns had been brought forward to my office regarding traffic not adhering to the

flashing lights of the school buses as children dismounted. The efficiency and accuracy of the ALPR

was incredibly proficient and accurate. I will implement additional monitoring of this type once again

as kids head back to school in the fall.

Funding for the purchase of the first and second ALPR units was provided by the Safer Roads Ottawa

Program. The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is a leading community partnership between Ottawa Fire
