A STAFF TRIBUTE TO FR. DANWorking alongside Fr. Daniel has been a privileged and transformative experience. Fr. Dan not only has a great pastoral side, but he is a good manager. He has been an inspirational boss whose gifts of vision & persistence have pushed his staff to reach for excellence and to be creative servant-leaders for the common good of our parish. He has often said that we should never squander the trust and generosity of our parishioners.

Fr. Dan possesses the unique talent of imaginative pastoral insight and effective, energetic implementation. His direct approach along with a mind that is in perpetual motion has kept us on our toes! We have learned so much from him and are very grateful for his leadership which has made us better persons, leaders and ministers. Along the way, we have had many moments of spirited discussion, problem-solving and laughter! Fr. Dan has encouraged us to stay focused on WHY we do what we do, which is to strive to be saints and to accompany others in their faith life. He is an example of someone who has taught some of us “old dogs” new technology tricks. He has mentored all of us in ways to be more welcoming and to deepen relationships and to step beyond our comfort zones.

Two of Fr. Daniel’s strongest qualities are his joy and passion for excellence, visible among us each time he has celebrated a Mass, pastored to parishioners or guided our staff team to brainstorm and implement new ideas and strategies. Fr. Dan has an incredible spiritual gift of guiding us through discernment of how to best use our gifts and talents. Only someone close to the Holy Spirit can do this with grace. We consider Fr. Daniel a keeper of his word, a friend and a spiritual brother and our staff looks forward to continuing his spirited brand of leadership by defying mediocrity! --POTHE Staff

FAREWELL FROM THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUSOne of the many things Fr. Dan is known for is bringing people together. That was certainly the case when the Knights of Columbus Council #15791 was formed. As a charter member, Fr. Dan was instrumental in bringing a small group of men together to form Council #15791.

Fr. Dan, our Council would not be where we are without the support you provided in our many efforts over the past five years, ranging from meals, events and scholarship programs to (most recently) our Faith in Action programs. We, the officers & membership of the Knights of Columbus Council #15791, wish you the best of success in Lewiston and in the years to come. Peace be with you.

FAREWELL FROM SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE COMMISSIONWe say, Thank you! Merci! Gratias! to Father Daniel Greenleaf. The Commission on Social Justice joins all parishioners to extend a heartfelt Thank-You to our Pastor as he moves to Prince of Peace Parish. We are grateful for many years of his support for charitable programs and also his challenges to do better. Parish of the Holy Eucharist has been able to sustain charitable work with: people offering personal time on the Commission, volunteering for ongoing community programs, supporting the refugee-immigrant community - to mention but a few activities. We thank Fr. Daniel for reaffirming support to the Haiti church - a commitment made 20 years ago. Our Social Justice work has been solid because of the guidance of our leadership: Fr. Daniel, Fr. Peter and Deacon Dennis, who work closely on finding ways to provide charity in response to the needs of people. The accomplishments of the these years with Fr. Dan are noteworthy, and the challenge will remain in the future.

Thank you, Father Daniel Greenleaf!

FINAL NOTE FROM FR. DANIEL...As I celebrate my last weekend Masses as your pastor, my heart is filled with so much gratitude for what I was given over the last seven years. It has truly been a gift to me to journey with you in faith because it has helped me grow in my own faith, in my priesthood and in my Church.Catholics do not always appreciate howimportant they are in the life of their priests as their spiritual family and how their priesthood is marked by the places to which they have been assigned. I stand before God with a full heart because of my time here. There is so much deep faith and dedication here and I leave this parish a better priest and man for being among you.

My only two regrets during my time at POTHE are not being able to know more people and for realizing that I may have unintentionally hurt people. This parish is so large, and it was always difficult to be everywhere I would have liked to be. Making sacrifices in order to tend to things is the cost of our clustering. It is my hope that people did not feel that I ignored them or the things they felt needed more attention from me. This is a large parish with a lot going on. Moreover, I know that I am not perfect. If I did something wrong or hurt someone by a flip comment or had to make an unfavorable decision, I ask for your forgiveness. In all humility, I want you to know that I did the best I could given the skills and character God gave me, but I do leave here knowing that I could have done better and I could have done more.

Parish of the Holy Eucharist is now a big part of my history and my life and it will always be an important chapter in my priesthood and relationship with God. Thank you for everything. I wish you all, and the new pastor, Fr. Phil, all of God’s blessings and successes as this parish continues to grow and thrive. Know that I am only a turnpike ride away, so if you are ever in Lewiston, please make it a point to say “HI!” Please pray for me and the Church in Lewiston. --Fr. Dan

FAREWELL FROM THE POTHE PASTORAL COUNCILFr. Dan, You brought us into communion with Our Eternal God and, in the process, brought four churches, ablaze with His light, into communion with one another. You helped us celebrate the joys of the Spirit, embodied in our collective worship and witnessed in our service to one another. Your endless energy and vibrant spirituality helped renew our pride in being a vibrant family: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. May God’s graces continue to flourish via your priestly gifts. We send you to Lewiston, fortified with the gratitude and blessings of your Pastoral Council, disciples in Christ.

Sunday June 30 Coffee & Pastry Socials following the Sunday Masses.Serving & set-up help appreciated. Tuesday July 2 Social evening for members & their families at St. Gregory Hall at 7:00 pm.

Congratulations to the 2019 James O. Harris Scholarship winners:Parker Rollins & Samuel McGrath Holmquist!

ASYLUM SEEKERS IN PORTLANDBishop Deeley recently issued a statement on Assisting Asylum Seekers in Portland saying, “This time of grave difficulty for some of our brothers and sisters calls us to show our concern and solidarity, answering our baptismal call to serve the most vulnerable among us, regardless of whether they are born in America or are new arrivals.”

Last weekend at all Masses, our Parish Social Justice Commission, in contact with Catholic Charities, collected donations to help alleviate the Asylum Crisis in Portland to support funding for providing interpreters, training volunteers for work in resettling asylum seekers, and training of these newcomers. Here are a few additonal ways you can still make a donation to this cause:• Visit the Catholic Charities Maine donation webpage set up specifically for

this cause to make a donation: www.ccmaine.org/welcome• Send your donation checks made out to Catholic Charities Maine (noting

“Asylee Support” on it) directly to Catholic Charities, 307 Congress Street, P.O. Box 10660, Portland, ME 04104.

• You may make any donations out to POTHE, designating checks for “Asylee Support”, and turn them into the parish office.

This is the situation in mid-June. It will likely change in the weeks ahead and our help may be requested in other ways. It is a good cause, it is right on our doorstep, we can help.

The Catholic Church and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops remind us of the Three Basic Principles of Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration:

1. People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families.

2. A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration. (While individuals have the right to move in search of a safe and humane life, no country is bound to accept all those who wish to resettle there. By this principle the Church recognizes that most immigration is ultimately not something to celebrate. Ordinarily, people do not leave the security of their own land and culture just to seek adventure in a new place or merely to enhance their standard of living. Instead, they migrate because they are desperate and the opportunity for a safe and secure life does not exist in their own land.)

3. A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION FOR THE PARISH ANNIVERSARY Our first parish overnight Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament was held last weekend at Sacred Heart and it was a wonderful thing to see so many parishioners take time to pray and be with Jesus. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of our dedicated Eucharistic Adorers and our clergy who, by their presence, allowed us to keep the church open all night. We had drop-in visitors all night long, (yes, even at 4 am!) Special thanks also to our music ministers who provided music for Exposition and Benediction. God bless you all.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ED & ROENA ZINK!This past Thursday, June 27, 2019, POTHE parishioners Ed & Roena Zink celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Congratulations!

“Resetting Our Priorities”Jesus has separate conversations with a few people in today’s Gospel and when he says, “Follow Me”, the people make excuses about things they have to do or to wrap up, or to take care of at home, or to finish their chores...before they follow him. Jesus reminds us that being his disciple means a radical resetting of our priorities. We can all relate to this tug in our lives. Can we truly say that the first priority in our life is God? This means that as Christians, we see every day through the eyes of faith. We integrate this view with simplicity in our everyday lives. One example is blessing each other at a given point in our day, with a simple sign of the cross on the forehead, saying, “I bless you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy spirit. Amen”. WE PRAY: “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for being with us, always! Saints in heaven, thank you for your prayers, friendship, your sacrifices of love to God and for your part in building our church. Pray for us.”WE TALK: How can we set God as our #1 priority in our family? In what simple ways can we do this in our family? How do we help each other be faithful to that priority?WE ACT: This week, if our family goes to a soccer game, or to the movies, or are working on chores, we will stop and invite God into all of it with a brief prayer of “God, thank you for being with us today.”

Come and join him in reading the Bible in the places where Jesus walked, taught and was crucified. The cost will be around $4,000, which is all inclusive, except for a few lunches. If you would like to reserve a seat, please contact Fr. Daniel as soon as possible.

Awakening Faith – Reconnecting with Your Catholic Faith is a small group process that helps inactive Catholics return to the Church. The group meets once a week for six weeks of conversation and socializing. The conversations are based on short, easy to read essays about spirituality, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God’s mercy, the Mass, and the Church. The meetings fos-ter reflection, prayer, and honest sharing in a setting of hospitality and acceptance. A small community is formed and over the six weeks becomes a bridge to the larger Church community. Contact Kim Lovett at our office to find out more. (207.847.6890)
