Could computing be in

your future?

Did you know...

• Less than 30% of students enrolled in computing degree programs are women, yet more women are now pursuing college degrees than men.

• Girls take math and science courses at the same rates as boys, and perform as well or better.

What are the first words you

think of when you hear the words

computer science?

Do they include...

robotics - programming - hardware

algorithms - difficult - lonely - math

science - boys - boring - nerd

complex - software - typing

?

What if you knew . . .

CS/IT folks are changing

the world all of the time.

They dream up creative,

practical solutions and work

with other smart, inspiring

people to invent, design,

and create things that

matter.

Creativity

– Music apps

– Movie animation

– Fashion design software

– 3-D virtual tours

– Books with animated illustrations

Instead of using wires to create electrical circuits, I craft them from paint and thread. Working with unique materials helps me connect my passions for technology and design.

— Emily Lovell, MIT Media Lab

Teamwork

– Media that bring

people together

– Collaboration

I develop features for a mobile app that helps people meet up with friends to explore their city.

– Wireless sensors to track endangered species

– Wearable computers that translate sign language

– Smart-phone fetal monitors for rural areas

– Simulations that predict the strength, speed, and path of a tornado.

Changing the world

I developed a “virtual nurse” that helps patients understand their medications and upcoming procedures.

— Laura Pfeifer, Northeastern University

• The typical starting salary for a graduate with a BS in computing is over $60K.

• There are more jobs in computing than there are students graduating with computing degrees-- even in the current economy.

Is computing a good career choice?

There is no one “type” of person who goes into computing. Are you someone who:

• is creative• likes collaborating with others• is curious and persistent• wants to make a difference• likes solving problems• is a B student or above• is thinking about going to college?

. . . then you’re on track to go into computing!

“It’s important to take a rich variety of classes and learn everything you can because you never know. Life changes. Getting a full education will benefit you later on in ways you can’t imagine now.”
