A Kansas farm wife called the local phonecompany to report her telephone failed to ringwhen her friends called - and that on the fewoccasions, when it did ring, her dog alwaysmoaned right before the phone rang. The telephonerepairman proceeded to the scene, curious to seethis psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed atelephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialedthe subscriber's house. The phone didn't ring rightaway, but then the dog moaned and the telephonebegan to ring. Climbing down from the pole, thetelephone repairman found:1 . The dog was tied to the telephone system'sground wire with a steel chain and collar.2. The wire connection to the ground rod wasloose.3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signalingcurrent when the number was called.4.. After a couple of jolts, the dog would startmoaning and then urinate.5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thuscausing the phone to ring.Which demonstrates that some problems CAN befixed by pissing and moaning.Thought you'd like to know.

An elderly lady actually wrote this letter toher bank. The bank manager thought it amusingenough to have it published in The Times and thisnewspaper thanks him most sincerely.Dear Sir,I am writing to thank you for bouncing my chequewith which I endeavoured to pay my plumber lastmonth. By my calculations, three 'nanoseconds'must have elapsed between his presenting thecheque and the arrival in my account of the fundsneeded to honour it. I refer, of course, to theautomatic monthly deposit of my Pension, anarrangement, which, I admit, has been in place foronly eight years. You are to be commended forseizing that brief window of opportunity, and alsofor debiting my account £30 by way of penalty forthe inconvenience caused to your bank.My thankfulness springs from the manner inwhich this incident has caused me to rethink myerrant financial ways.I noticed that whereas I personally attend toyour telephone calls and letters, when I try tocontact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, re-recorded, faceless entity, whichyour bank has become. From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person. My mortgage and loan payments will thereforeand hereafter no longer be automatic, but willarrive at your bank by cheque, addressedpersonally and confidentially to an employee atyour bank whom you must nominate.Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Actfor any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application ContactStatus, which I require your chosen employee tocomplete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but inorder that I know as much about him or her asyour bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that a Solicitor must countersign allcopies of his or her medical history, and themandatory details of his/her financial situation(income, debts, assets and liabilities' must beaccompanied by documented proof. In due course, I will issue your employee witha PIN number, which he/she must quote indealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorterthan 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on thenumber of button presses required of me to access

my account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form offlattery.Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows:1-- To make an appointment to see me.2-- To query a missing payment.3-- To transfer the call to my living room in case Iam there.4-- To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I amsleeping.5-- To transfer the call to my toilet in case I amattending to nature.6-- To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I amnot at home.7-- To leave a message on my computer (apassword to access my computer is required. Apassword will be communicated at a later date tothe Authorized Contact.)8-- To return to the main menu and to listen tooptions 1 through 89-- To make a general complaint or inquiry, thecontact will then be put on hold, pending theattention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthywait, uplifting music will play for the duration ofthe call.Regrettably, but again following your example, Imust also levy an establishment fee to cover thesetting up of this new arrangement.May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly lessprosperous, New Year.Your Humble Client

SCOTTISH COMPASSIONA man on a blanket at the beach. He had no arms and no legs.Three women, from England , Wales , and Scotland, were walking past and felt sorry for the poor man.The English woman said "Have you ever had ahug?"The man said "No," so she gave him a hug andwalked on.The Welsh woman said, "Have you ever had akiss?"The man said, "No," so she gave him a kiss andwalked on.The Scottish woman came to him and said, "'huvye ever been screwed, son?"The man broke into a big smile and said, "No".She said, "Aye, well ye wull be when the tidecomes in."

One day, while going to the shop, I passed by aretirement village. On the front lawn were six oldladies, lying naked on the grass. I thought this wasa bit unusual, but continued on my way. On myreturn trip, I passed the same retirement villagewith the same six old ladies lying naked on thelawn. This time my curiosity got the better of meand I went inside to talk to the retirement villageAdministrator, and asked her:"Do you know there are six ladies lying naked onyour front lawn?"“Yes,” she said, "aren't they darlings? They'reretired prostitutes ........they're having a yard sale. "

FINALLY! A VEHICLE THAT WILLHANDLE DOMINICAN POTHOLES!

After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes on the train. As the trainrolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in aloud voice:"Hi sweetheart. It's Eric. I'm on the train. Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I hada long meeting. No, honey, not with that blonde from the accounts office. With the boss. No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life. Yes, I'm sure, cross my heart!"Fifteen minutes later, he was still talking loudly, when the young woman sitting next to him had hadenough, leaned over and said into the phone, "Eric, turn that phone off and come back to bed."Eric doesn't use his cell phone in public any longer.

CM’S DEFINITELY NOT THE NEWS!Because rumour, gossip, hearsay and anecdotes are just sooo much more fun!

Welcome to a new feature we’re going to test drive! It’s basically going to be tidbits about life here on theNorth Coast. Things that affect us. Things that amuse us. Things that annoy us. None of it is hard corejournalism. It’s what we’ve heard, seen and experienced. Feel free to email us [email protected] with updates, clarifications, corrections or whatever. And keep in mind - we are not claiming that this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! It’sjust a glimpse of what’s happening and sometimes a bit of fun! Don’t take it too seriously!

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT!So as we all know Ayuntamiento Puerto Plata (APP) isnow collecting Costambar’s garbage. And last monthwe all got outrageous bills for this service. Outrageousenough to incite normally tranquilo folks to call forcivil disobedience! No problema, they said. It was allan administrative error, ignore them and the next billswould reflect the correct amounts. Well, the next billis here and not only are they for the same outrageousamounts but come with a letter telling you haven’tpaid the first outrageous amount. The letter alsoproudly brags about the new offices they’ve openedto modernize & improve customer service & billing!Pour yourself a drink folks - this could be a longprocess! There is (being Costambar) varying opinions onwhether this is a good thing or not. The great thingabout this on the other hand is that now garbage iscollected everywhere in Costambar on a set scheduleof Monday & Thursday starting at about 6:30am.

DANCING IN THE DARK!The power has gotten progressively worse on theNorth Coast. Generating stations haven’t been paidand a lot went offline. Edenorte advised that powereverywhere including 24 hour zones would be bad. Can’t be sure about that but gotta say that Costambaris listed as a B rated zone and can suffer as much as12 hours or more off in a day - often in a row!According to the Edenorte site(http://www.edenorte.com.do/atencion-al-cliente/interrupciones-programadas/) our normalweekday outtage should be 11am-5pm. That’soptimistic these days! Weekends are typically two 3hour outtages - one morning & one evening. Again, optimistic. Dominican Today reports that thegovernment has paid about half of the outstandingaccount and that the power situation should improve. We’ll say it one more time - OPTIMISTIC!

KNIT ONE, CABLE ZERO!While we all know that if the power goes off the cablewill go off for a little while until their backup systemskick in. And if the power is off for a lengthy time thecable will likely eventually go off completely. Lately,we are back to those wonderful blue boxes coming upover the screen quite regularly. And, an added feature- about 1 o’clock every day several channels powerdown for anywhere from an hour to all afternoon. And yes, we still lose channels regularly. We are downto one English language movie channel. But the funpart is what the missing channels get replaced with!Honestly, for a while one of the networks wasreplaced with what seemed to be the 24 hour HairClub for Men channel! On the bright side, our cable company can reallyprevent you from becoming a couch potato!

CM FAQWhy don’t you publish in Spanish/other languages aswell? We do get asked this a lot. Our first intention whendoing English only was to avoid something we foundannoying. When you pick up a publication thatincludes several languages and you have to siftthrough a lot of content to find what you want. But also, while I’ve been here a looooong time and myconversational Spanish ain’t too shabby I don’t trustmy written Spanish or that if I entrusted it tosomeone else that I could tell if the actual meaning &gist were captured. And finally, the only place I really enjoy seeingsomething poorly translated is on a Chinese menu -now that’s funny!
