About CRBo
7KH�2EVHUYDWRULHV��&5%2��DUH�D�QDWLRQZLGH�SDUWQHUVKLS�WKDW�SURPRWHV�ELUG�conservation through monitoring, science, and education in Costa Rica. Many DYLDQ�SRSXODWLRQV�ZRUOGZLGH�DSSHDU�WR�EH�LQ�GHFOLQH�DQG�&5%2�LV�UHVSRQGLQJ�by increasing monitoring activities focused on identifying factors that prevent population recovery. Bird monitoring in Costa Rica is particularly important because the country represents less than half of one percent of the Earth’s ODQGPDVV��\HW�PRUH�WKDQ����RI�WKH�ZRUOG̵V�ELUG�VSHFLHV�KDYH�EHHQ�GRFXPHQWHG�ZLWKLQ�WKH�FRXQWU\̵V�SROLWLFDO�ERXQGDULHV���7R�DGHTXDWHO\�PRQLWRU�&RVWD�5LFD̵V�JOREDOO\�LPSRUWDQW�ELUG�FRPPXQLW\�ZH�ZRUN�ZLWK�SDUWQHUV�WR�JDWKHU��SUHVHUYH��and analyze bird monitoring data and generate tools that inform, enhance, and SURPRWH�ELUG�FRQVHUYDWLRQ��:H�ZRUN�LQ�FROODERUDWLRQ�ZLWK�PDQ\�HQWLWLHV�LQVLGH�and outside of Costa Rica, notably the National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio) in Costa Rica, the US Forest Service, and the Klamath Bird Observatory.
Our vision: To gather and preserve information on birds and their habitats to further conservation and bird science in Costa Rica.

Filling the Gap Between Science and Conservation
3HUKDSV� WKH�ELJJHVW� FKDOOHQJH� IDFHG�E\�ELUG�REVHUYDWRULHV�ZRUOGZLGH� LV�the dissemination of science into actionable and impactful conservation. CRBO has invested a considerable amount of time developing mechanisms WR� DGGUHVV� WKH� JDS� EHWZHHQ� VFLHQFH� DQG� FRQVHUYDWLRQ�� ,Q� WKLV� YHLQ�� &5%2�UHFHQWO\�SDUWLFLSDWHG�LQ�7KH�3DUWQHUV�LQ�)OLJKW�9�FRQIHUHQFH�WR�GHYHORS�ZD\V�WR�LPSURYH�WKH�PRYHPHQW�RI�VFLHQWLͤF�LGHDV�WR�DFWLRQDEOH�ELUG�FRQVHUYDWLRQ�
&5%2̵V� IRFXV�RQ�PHDVXUHDEOH� FRQVHUYDWLRQ� LV�EHVW� H[HPSOLͤHG� WKURXJK�RXU� SDUWQHUVKLS� RQ� WKH� *ROGHQ�ZLQJHG� :DUEOHU� ZLWK� WKH� $PHULFDQ� %LUG�&RQVHUYDQF\��ZKHUH�&5%2�OHG�WKH�SURFHVV�RI�LGHQWLI\LQJ�SULRULW\�FRQVHUYDWLRQ�areas in Costa Rica for this migratory species undergoing precipitous population declines. Just this past August, through CRBO’s leadership, a group DQDO\]HG�GHPRJUDSKLF�DQG�FHQVXV�GDWD�DQG�ODQG�PDQDJHUV�ZHUH�EULHIHG�RQ�SUHYDLOLQJ�WKUHDWV�IDFLQJ�WKH�VSHFLHV�ZLWK�WKH�REMHFWLYH�RI�HQVXULQJ�WKDW�SULYDWH�DQG�SXEOLF�ODQGV�DUH�EHLQJ�DSSURSULDWHO\�PDQDJHG�IRU�WKH�ZDUEOHU�
CRBO continues to play an important role in the bird monitoring community, ZLWK� SHUVRQQHO� VHUYLQJ� SRVLWLRQV� LQ� WKH� 1RUWK� $PHULFDQ� %DQGLQJ� &RXQFLO��the Western Bird Banding Association Board of Directors, and the landbird 0RQLWRULQJ�1HWZRUN�RI�WKH�$PHULFDV��2XU�LQYROYHPHQW�ZLWK�WKHVH�RUJDQL]DWLRQV�DOORZV� XV� WR� EHWWHU� LQYROYH� RXU� HIIRUWV� ZLWK� ODUJHU� DQG� PRUH� LQWHUQDWLRQDO�LQLWLDWLYHV��LW�DOVR�IDFLOLWDWHV�WKH�HQUROOPHQW�RI�VPDOO�SURMHFWV�IURP�WKH�UHJLRQ�to be part of larger effort. Breaking new Grounds in Communication
&5%2�KDV�HVWDEOLVKHG�D�IRUPDO�DJUHHPHQW�ZLWK�&KDQQHO����D�&RVWD�5LFDQ�1DWLRQDO�7HOHYLVLRQ�%URDGFDVWLQJ�&RPSDQ\��ZKLFK�DOORZV�XV�WR�DLU�D�ZHHNO\�VSRW� RQ� SULPH� WLPH�79� HYHU\�0RQGD\� DW� ����� SP��'XULQJ� RXU� DOORWWHG� WLPH�
ZH� GHYHORS� H[FLWLQJ� VWRULHV� DERXW�conservation, research, and natural KLVWRU\�� DOORZLQJ� XV� WR� SXUVXH� RXU�long-term agenda of creating a more bird-friendly national discourse and community. In the past year, CRBO has developed programs covering sustainable natural resource utilization, natural history, the pet trade, deforestation and anthropogenic impacts, and mechanisms of conservation.

In addition to domestic partnerships, CRBO has supported emerging banding programs in other latin American countries in their efforts to HVWDEOLVK�ELUG�PRQLWRULQJ�SURJUDPV�� ,Q������ZH�ZHUH�DEOH� WR�KHOS�RUJDQL]H�WKH�VHFRQG�ELUG�EDQGLQJ�FRXUVH�LQ�%UD]LO�WKDW�ZDV�FRQGXFWHG�LQ�SDUWQHUVKLS�ZLWK�&(0$9(��,QVWLWXWR�1DFLRQDO�GH�3HVTXLVDV�GD�$PD]¶QLD��DQG�'U��*RQ©DOR�)HUUD]�DW�WKH�)HGHUDO�8QLYHUVLW\�RI�5LR�*UDQGH�GR�6XO��'XULQJ�WKHVH�RQH�ZHHN�FRXUVHV�� VWXGHQWV� ZRUN� ZLWK� LQVWUXFWRUV� LQ� WKH� ͤHOG� DQG� DWWHQG� DIWHUQRRQ�lectures focused on a diversity of topics pertaining to bird monitoring, thereby helping prepare the next generation of latin American researchers and conservationists. Thus far both Rotary Clubs have YLVLWHG�&5%2̵V�VWDWLRQV�DQG�FRPPXQLWLHV�LQ�ZKLFK�ZH�RSHUDWH�WR�KHOS�SODQ�WKH�LPSOHPHQWDWLRQ�RI�KXPDQLWDULDQ�SURMHFWV�VFKHGXOHG�WR�EHJLQ�LQ������

Science and monitoring
CRBO has continued to implement bird banding and census activities at all stations (see Map). Our operations in Tortuguero over the past 20 years represent the longest running constant effort mist-netting program in latin $PHULFD��7KLV�\HDU�ZH�LPSOHPHQWHG�WKH�XVH�RI�DXGLR�OXUHV�DW�VRPH�VLWHV�WR�attract nocturnal migratory birds thereby increasing the data available on migratory species, such as body condition. This technique is commonly used in Europe but rarely has been implemented in the Americas.
:H�KDYH�VXFFHVVIXOO\�VWDUWHG�RXU�QHZ�VWDWLRQ�DW�/D�6HOYD�%LRORJLFDO�6WDWLRQ��a premier location for the implementation of research activities in Central $PHULFD��7KH�/D�6HOYD�VWDWLRQ�SURYLGHV�VHYHUDO�LPSRUWDQW�EHQHͤWV��D�IDQWDVWLF�diversity and abundance of birds, close proximity to San Jose, logistics DVVRFLDWHG�ZLWK�DQ�H[LVWLQJ�ZRUOG�FODVV�UHVHDUFK�VWDWLRQ��DQG�GDWD�FRQWLQXLW\�of the previous monitoring effort operated by the Calgary Bird Banding Society.
&5%2� KDV� EHHQ� ZRUNLQJ� KDUG� WR� FRQVROLGDWH� DQG� FXUDWH� RXU� H[WHQVLYH�database into a single format, available for analysis and use by researchers. Database curation has been completed through our cooperative agreement ZLWK�WKH�5HGZRRG�6FLHQFHV�/DERUDWRU\�LQ�$UFDWD��&DOLIRUQLD��ZKLFK�RIIHUV�GDWD�DUFKLYDO�VHUYLFHV�WKURXJK�WKH�/DQGELUG�0RQLWRULQJ�1HWZRUN�RI�WKH�$PHULFDV��
A key component of CRBO mission is the collection, analysis and GLVVHPLQDWLRQ� RI� LPSRUWDQW� UHVXOWV� WR� WKH� VFLHQWLͤF� FRPPXQLW\� WKURXJK�SXEOLVKLQJ� LQ� SHHU�UHYLHZHG� OLWHUDWXUH�� )RU� H[DPSOH�� RXU� UHFHQW� SDSHU� LQ�

WKH� YHU\�KLJK� LPSDFW� MRXUQDO�3/26�21(�GHPRQVWUDWHG� WKDW� IUXLW� SURGXFWLRQ�DORQJ�WKH�&DULEEHDQ�FRDVW�LV�WLPHG�ZLWK�WKH�DUULYDO�RI�PLJUDQW�ELUGV�WKHUHE\�IRUPLQJ�D�PXWXDOLVWLF�UHODWLRQVKLS�ZKHUH�ELUGV�REWDLQ�WKH�UHVRXUFHV�QHFHVVDU\�to complete their annual movements, and plants are able to disperse their VHHGV� DFURVV� D� EURDG� JHRJUDSKLF� DUHD�� 8QIRUWXQDWHO\�� ZH� EHOLHYH� WKHVH�delicate relationships are easily undone through climatic change. Additional research has focused on the annual survival of a sensitive migrant species, the Prothonotary Warbler, in relation to fat accumulation. Our results suggest WKDW� KHDYLHU� LQGLYLGXDOV� KDG� KLJKHU� UDWHV� RI� DQQXDO� VXUYLYDO� DQG� ZLQWHULQJ�Prothonotary Warblers select high quality forests necessary to accumulate IDW�WKHUHE\�VWUHQJWKHQLQJ�RXU�XQGHUVWDQGLQJ�RI�WKH�GHOLFDWH�EDODQFH�EHWZHHQ�healthy birds, healthy climate and healthy habitat. During 2013 CRBO had active participation and presentations at the Western Bird Banding Association, North American Banding Council, and WKH�LQWHUQDWLRQDO�PHHWLQJ�RI�̸3DUWQHUV�LQ�)OLJKW�9̹��$W�WKLV�ODWWHU�PHHWLQJ�ZH�HQJDJHG�SDUWLFLSDQWV�DQG�FRPPLWWHG�WR�KROG�WKH�XSFRPLQJ�̸3,)�9,̹�PHHWLQJ�in Costa Rica, likely to be held in 2017.
:H�KDYH�VWDUWHG� WR� LPSOHPHQW�DFWLRQV� WRZDUGV� WKH�FRQVROLGDWLRQ�RI�RXU�program that involve the development and implementation of a strategic SODQ�WKDW� OHDGV�RXU�HIIRUWV��DOVR�&5%2�KDV�EHHQ�ZRUNLQJ�WR�DFTXLUH� LWV�RZQ�incorporation in Costa Rica and to be an NGO leader in conservation and science in Costa Rica.
