Program for September:

Scott Huette "Every Artist Needs a Portfolio"

A portfolio is a versatile tool that no artist should be without. It is a portable gallery of your work offering you the opportunity to exhibit and market your work anywhere, anytime. Scott Huette, Photographer and UO Instructor will lead an informal question and answer session addressing portfolio design and pro-duction, such as issues of format, layout, typography, sequence, bindings, enclosures, and digital fine art capture & reproduction methods.

Scott's art work focuses on merging 21st century technology and 19th century alternative photo-graphic printing processes with an emphasis on landscapes and portraiture, all with an "eye" toward blending Eastern and Western Aesthetics. You can view his art at http://studioyugen.com/portfolios.html

Scott also devotes a portion of his time to educating and consulting with artists on how to market their work, how to promote themselves, and how to develop sustainable economic models for their studio. In the spring he'll be giving a presentation to us on photo-graphing our artwork.

So far our summer events have been a great success. At daVinci Days we had a great location under the trees at the Art Village. Many people again participated in our "daVinci Draw" excercise and we are including some of the best drawings in this newsletter. Laura as usual did a superb job as our featured model and this year was assisted by a number of young aspiring models. Many of the Vistas & Vineyards painters as well as some visitors painted and drew at the booth. We even did "quick draw" studies of some of the young visitors.

At the Clothesline Sale we exceeded last years results by a small amount and despite the heat, most everyone had a good time. I want to thank all the volunteers for their contributions toward making this a success. Specifically, I want to recognize Doyle for his overall leadership of the event and Margie for her effort in getting us so much great publicity in the newspaper.

The Fall festival in September will be our final event for the summer and is being organized by Jasmine Nahorniak. Besides Jasmine and myself, the other participants will be Cherrill Boissonou, Tom Allen, Carolyn Madsen, Jake Dorr, Kelly Collins and Linda Edwards.

Clothesline Sale 2009

The weather for the 48th Clothesline Sale of Art was a little warm. It was almost perfect in the shade, but a little hot for the tents that were out in the sun all day. Everyone had a good time, with the possible exception of one of our artists who was temporarily overcome by the heat, but was able to return to the sale before the end of the day. Many thanks to all who helped out with manning his booth while he was gone. I don’t believe his sales skipped a beat. The crowds seemed a little heavier than last year, and the sales were just a little better. So let’s hope that our sales are following the economy and have bottomed out and will be up even more next year. Chinh Le and I are interested in comments and suggestions from all who participated and will be having a meeting soon to discuss the sale and plans for the next one. We want to thank everyone who helped make our sale a success, especially Margie Kinch who went above and beyond with the advertis-ing. I believe having our advertising in color, and having the additional articles in the GT was very beneficial to our sales. Speaking of next year, we are looking for someone to be the Chairperson of next years Clothesline Sale, or possibly two Chairpersons to share the responsibility. We have all of the information from many of the past Clothesline Sales to draw from, and we have develop-ed a comprehensive spread sheet to help the next Chairperson plan the activities, and manage the com-mittee’s. In addition, I will be around to help the next Chairperson. Also, past chairperson Molly Perry and others will be able to help answer questions. So you will have lots of help. Thanks again for all of you that helped make the 48th Clothesline Sale of Art a big success.

Doyle Leek

Those of us participating in the Clothesline sale havemany behind the “lines” volunteers to thank. One, a new member, Sandra Helmick. Sandra, spouse of Richard Helmick, is a non-artist member of the Arts Guild. She has signed on to assist the organization's treasurer DiAnn Acevedo. Sandra has an academic background in finance and economics; something that every artist and arts organization needs.

Question: Is the file size of our “Electronic” brush-strokes newsletter becoming too big? Is it taking too long to down load? I’m including lots of artwork and workshop information that have images attached. So If you’re having problems let me know. Harold Wood [email protected]

Kris Mitchell has a show in the Murdock Gallery at LaSalle Stewart Center in September. Artist reception isSeptember 11th from 4 to 6pm.

Attached is a copy of my painting, "Lavender and Poppies." It received an "Award of Excellence" and was sold at the Oregon Lavender Festival Plein Air Art Show held in Yamhill July 11-12.

Two weeks prior to the festival artists are invited to paint plein air in designated lavender fields taking part in the event. It may not be the same as painting lavender in France, but it was a fantastic experience and much cheaper! I stayed with hosts, who along with other community members, opened their homes to the artists. You are asked to bring your own food. The simplest fare makes a great meal when you are sitting with a view of purple lavender, vinyards and rolling hills.

To be accepted into the show a painting had to be painted plein air during the two weeks with 85% of the piece completed in the field.Thirty-five artists took part in the event and 130 paintings were in theshow held in Yamhill during the two day festival. All unsold paintings were then transported and put on display at two sites in McMinnville, Ford Street Galleryand NW Wine Bar, for one month. Sadly, paintingsthat sold did not stay in the show.

Applications to take part in the Festival's plein air paint out is posted on the Oregon Lavender Festival website each spring. I plan to take part again next year and would be happy to share information with anyone else who is interested. They can call me at 541-971-7151 or email me at [email protected]. To be sure I open it write "lavender" in the subject line.
