President’s Report

It gives me great pleasure to present the 2014/15 Season Annual Report and Statement of Accounts. Season 2014/15 has been a successful season for many reasons and I can confidently say that we have achieved our mission of:

• Providing a safe aquatic environment • Educating the community about beach safety • Providing programs that encourages education and skills enhancement • Promoting inclusiveness and engagement of all members of the

community to be involved in Surf Life Saving Key performance results that demonstrate our success this season are:

• Another season that we have kept our beach safe – no lives lost • Our members attained 28 new awards – down on last season but still a

positive result • We registered 224 Nippers – slightly up on last season and a new record • Purchases of major items of patrol and competition equipment • Achieving excellent competition results in the Nippers, Mani Meredith in

the board and ski area and several notable performances by our surf boat crews

As a registered charity, it would be impossible to perform the voluntary work that we undertake within the Corrimal community without our sponsors, so thank you very much and we hope to see you back again for 2015/16, they are:

1. Bellambi Hotel 2. Design Bathware 3. Corrimal Leagues Club 4. Ebb & Tide Café 5. East Corrimal Butchery 6. Guzman Y Gomez

Last but certainly not least, two great local businesses who are both dedicated and hard-working members of our club:

1. O’Brien’s Service Centre 2. Aspiration Graphics

For us, the members of Corrimal Surf Club, let’s get behind our sponsors whenever we can by utilising or consuming their services or products. I would like to recognise and thank the following people for their efforts during the last season:

• The Surf Club Committee for this season – Louise, Jordan, Craig Wood, Tara, Carole, Fuji, Todd, Ricky, Paul, Nicolette, Luke. In particular Jordan, Nicolette and Craig – it was your first year on the Committee and it was steep learning curve. Each of you were faced with your own individual challenges throughout the season and you handled each situation professionally and ethically, well done and I hope to see you back again

P a g e | 6

• The Junior Committee – 224 kids and a whole lot of parents to organise and supervise – great work. It’s a shame that the behaviour of a few made for some difficult moments but I’m sure we’ve all come out the other end better for it

• Everyone who pulled on a red and yellow shirt and did a patrol this season. Compliance-wise, it wasn’t one of our best seasons but I’m confident that we can sort that out. However we have a good mix of experience that helps keep the people that come to our beach safe

• Everyone who competed under the black and white quartered cap, senior and junior – we had a great year this year:

- Lots of medal winners at Branch level in the Nippers - Mani Meredith came home with a swag of u17 water event gold

medals from the Branch Championships - Our Open Men crew, Corrimal Black finished the Ocean Thunder

Pro Surf Boat Series in 2nd place, bringing home $9,000 in prize money

- Winners of the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series Club Championship, the first time in its 15 year history – we competed in every division except for Masters

• Fuji, Carole, Terry Stedman and all of the Nipper parents that officiated at carnivals this season – you’ve done a great job

• Congratulations to Greg Lancaster for being awarded the Most Outstanding Member, thoroughly deserved recognition for a hard-working and passionate club stalwart

• Chris Chapman for bringing our ATV back to life after is suffered a major mechanical breakdown on Christmas Day

• Fuji, Terry Stedman and Paul Smith for sorting out, tidying up and maintaining every nook and cranny of our club house

• Everyone who did water safety from Sunday morning Nippers to the State Championships at Umina and everything in between

• Lisa Cox and Nicolette Cartwright for spreading the surf safety message to the younger members of our community at the Coolgardie Children’s Centre

• Tony from Fishnets for giving us a great deal on the food for this season’s presentation night and great deals at Corrimal Bowlo at 2 fundraisers

• Anyone that I have missed to cooks a BBQ, serves a drink or is a spouse or partner to a member that spends their time at such a great surf club

• Thanks for the generous support of the general public and donors of the state-wide Raffle and Guardians of the Surf fundraising program

We proudly christened the latest addition to our surf boat fleet, the Jason ‘Chops’ Northey. Chops represented our club as a rower and sweep over many years and was a very motivated, skilful and well-respected athlete and very deserving of this honour.

P a g e | 7

2014/15 has been another solid season for us financially, finishing the year with all of our accounts, except the surf boat account, in a healthier position than when we started. It was the intent of the Committee again to reinvest our surplus back to our members through increased recognition and reward e.g. our presentation night, awards, purchase of new equipment, etc. Some things that we can all work on next season to keep on improving our Club:

1. Increased participation in community events like Spring into Corrimal and Surf Life Saving Open Day, Clean Up Australia Day

2. Pitching in – we’re all in this together, so think about ways you can improve your contribution towards making our club a better club. Think of the collective gain if everyone increases their contribution, even if only by a small amount!!

3. Get as many of our members and old members on our Facebook and web page – with continued responsible use, it’s a great way keep updated with what is going on, share photographs or video clips and generally stay connected

4. Replacing our worn-out ATV – we will seek the support of one of our major sponsors, Corrimal Leagues Club through the ClubGRANTS scheme

5. Continuing to gain awards – we are in desperate need of more IRB Drivers, IRB Crew and Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate holders

See you next season Tony Cartwright

Government Support

We would like to recognise and thank the following government departments for their generous support during the 2014/15 season:

1. NSW Government’s Ministry for Police and Emergency Services for the ongoing funding of state-wide operations, which benefit all members through our cooperative agreement; and for the targeted funding through the ‘Enhanced Rescue Capabilities Grant’, which has enabled support operations and services to be extended and for black spot locations to be targeted. In addition, with this funding, the ‘Lifesaving Gear and Equipment Grant’ has doubled over the last four years so clubs and branches can purchase necessary rescue equipment. This funding also assists in covering some of the costs of the state-wide radio network

2. The ‘Emergency Volunteer Support Scheme’ that is funded through the National Partnership Agreement on Natural Disaster Resilience between the NSW and Commonwealth Governments for receiving a free ‘Baby Anne’ infant manikin for emergency volunteer first aid training

3. The Federal Government for the Beach Safety Equipment Funding which directed $5,000 to every SLSC for the purchase of vital rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies

4. The NSW Government for the free pair of binoculars they will receive this financial year which were “supported by funding from NSW Department of Primary Industries”

Secretary’s Report

I'd like to start with telling you all how proud I am to have been Secretary of Corrimal SLSC for the past 2 seasons. We have had another great safe year on our beach. A massive thank you has to be extended to all patrolling members especially those who covered patrols so that our boat crews could compete at various carnivals. To our many new SRC recruits, congratulations and I hope that our existing patrolling members pass on their knowledge and experience so that your transition from nippers to life savers is an easy one. To our many sponsors thank you and our newest sponsor, Jack Tadros from East Corrimal Butchery, welcome aboard. We have once again had fantastic results from both junior and senior ranks at local, State and Aussie titles. Thank you all for your time and patience over the last 2 years as Secretary of the magnificent black and white cap; it has been an eye-opener and a treasured experience. Here's to another awesome season at Corrimal SLSC. See you on the beach.

Treasurer’s Report

As Treasurer for the 2014 / 2015 Season I am able to report that the Club was financially secure in all accounts. On behalf of the Executive, in my opinion:

a. The accounts give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the organisation with respect to fundraising appeals;

b. The Balance Sheet gives a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the organisation with respect to fundraising appeals, and;

c. The provisions of the Act, the Regulations under the Act, and the conditions attached to the fundraising authority have been complied with by the organisation, and;

d. The internal controls exercised by the organisation are appropriate and effective in accounting for all income received and applied by the organisation from any of its fundraising appeals.

We have had several fundraising events organised throughout the season by members and these funds have helped keep the club running in an efficient and competent manner. We have been able to purchase some new equipment for the club this season and hopefully aim to continue updating vital equipment next season. Many thanks to all Club members and local businesses in their continuing support and we hope to maintain this association during future season.

Junior Activities Chairperson’s Report

2014/15 was a very busy and exciting year for Corrimal Nippers. We had another record breaking year with 224 Nippers registering, keeping our committee and numerous volunteers busy and on their toes! It was a pleasure to turn up each week and see the huge amount of parents getting involved and having fun while doing it. To all of the new and existing committee members, age managers and behind-the-scene volunteers, thank you for your time and support throughout the season, our club would not be what it is today without your help. Competition Our club was well represented in all competitions throughout the year. From the Sydney Water Series through to the Branch Titles and State Championships, there was always a “Black and White” quartered cap competing on the sand or in the water. Branch Championships At the Branch Championships we had 42 competitors, all of whom tried their hearts out – we were represented in the first event of the day and did not stop until the last. Our team collected 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze medals. Our Gold Medallists were:

• March Past Team • Brayden Woodford in the u9 Surf Race • Bailey Sommers in the u10 Beach Flags

Special thanks must go out to all the parents who gave up their time to be an official or help out with water safety, without you our kids would not be able to compete. NSW Championships We had 7 competitors make their way up the Pacific Highway to Umina and Ocean Beach for the NSW Championships. Our kids were faced with very challenging surf conditions and disruptions on the beach throughout the weekend and it tested not only their physical abilities but also their mental toughness. On many occasions our kids were on the start line only to have their event delayed due to unsafe conditions. The beach competitors had to deal with their sprint and flag courses being washed away by huge seas, while the water competitors were at the mercy of ‘Huey’ with regular sets coming in at 6 feet plus. Considering the large number of competitors in each event – 200 plus – and the size and experience level of our team, our kids efforts were amazing. Special mentions go to Halle Bone (u10) and Isabella Wood (u9) who reached the final of the Surf Race in their respective age groups.

P a g e | 14

SLSI Junior Life Saver of the Year Over the years, we have produced some fantastic young life savers and this season was no exception. Grace St George was a finalist in in this year’s nominations. Grace has proven herself to be an outstanding leader within our club and ambassador for our club, always showing great sportsmanship and willingness to help out her own club and nippers from other clubs. Grace was a regular patrolling member throughout the season and was a deserving finalist in this award category. Our Partners: I must say a big thank you to all the partners and families in assisting us with services and donations to purchase much needed equipment and to help educate our nippers while making it a fun and safe environment. In particular, I would like to thank:

• Corrimal Leagues Club • The Lee Family • The Bone Family • The Jamieson Family • Bunnings Wollongong

I would also like to thank the Corrimal Surf Club Committee for their ongoing support and donation of 17 new nippers boards this season. To our 224 nippers and your parents and carers, you give the junior section of our club a heartbeat and I thank you for the wonderful season. Our role as the Junior Activities Committee is to create and maintain a safe and caring environment and it is made so much easier with your laughter, fun and your willingness to chip in and lend a hand. I look forward to seeing you all in the coming season and I hope to see the same smiling faces from last year and the bright and expectant faces of the new nippers in 2015/16.

Club Captain’s Report

First and foremost the 2014/15 surf life saving season was a successful one for Corrimal. This season saw a total of:

• Approximately 30,000 people visit our beach • 50 Active Patrolling Members and 11 Active Reserves, Long Service and

Life Members complete 1,860 patrol hours • Zero fatalities • 3 incidents requiring an ambulance • 11 rescues • 17 first aid treatments • Over 1500 preventative measures

These stats show the capability of all of the lifesavers in our club and I would like to thank you all for your efforts this season, it would not have been such a successful season without you. This season also saw 30 of our patrolling members achieve 100% of their allocated patrol hours with several members going above and beyond by completing a significant amount of hours on top of their minimum allocated hours. Though there were many positives that came out of this season, there is still room for improvement as the club received warnings during audits for failing to comply with several patrol requirements, the main one being a lack of IRB drivers. This should not be an issue for the upcoming season as there are currently 6 members undergoing training for their Silver Medallion IRB Driver’s award. It was also great to see our younger members completing their Surf Rescue Certificate, coming through the ranks and experiencing their first patrol at the end of the season. The future is looking bright for Corrimal Surf Club. Jordan Scott

Surf Boat Captain’s Report

2014/15 was a step up on last season, a bloody good one, but those State and Australian medals eluded us yet again. The two most significant highlights of the season being:

1. Winning the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series (WBSBS) Club Championship for the first time in the 15 year history of the series

2. Our mighty Open Men crew, Corrimal Black, took out 2nd place in the Ocean Thunder Pro Surf Boat Series with a 1st and two 2nd places in the 4 round series, bringing home some serious prize money

Other season highlights included: • 9 crews donning the Black and White quartered cap and their sexy pink

vests (thanks to Ebb and Tide Café), performing strongly and further building our strong reputation

• In November, thanks to the help of our senior and junior members and supporters, we held the 1st round of the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series and hosted a cracking after-party – Mexican Desmadre

• In February, we christened the latest addition to our fleet, the Jason ‘Chops’ Northey. Generous sponsorship donations, prizemoney and solid fundraising allowed us to make this purchase with a new trailer. Chops represented our club as a rower and sweep over many years. He was a very motivated, skilful and well-respected athlete and very deserving of this honour

• The Corrimal Creeps dominated the Reserve Men division of the WBSBS, winning 10 out of 11 races over the three round series

• We celebrated the 2014/15 season with a great Mad Monday at the Currumbin Creek Tavern, well organised and ran by Trav

Our sponsors Thanks to our major sponsors:

• Bellambi Hotel – thank you Brendan for your continued support, it adds up to a hell of a lot of money over time and we sincerely appreciate your generosity - our boat shed is full it

• Design Bathware – Scott, your support enabled our Open Men crew to compete in Ocean Thunder again this year. There are so many other benefits that our Club receives as a result of this support

• Ebb and Tide Café – thanks Mary, our boat crews looked awesome on the beach this season

• East Corrimal Butchery – thanks Jack for the voucher to raffle off every Sunday

• O’Brien’s Service Centre – Chris and Louise – our trailers love you!! • Aspiration Graphics – Travis & Bels – you guys do so much work for the club,

a lot that goes unseen.– signwriting surf boats, redesigning logos for new sponsors, stickers, invitations, the list goes on

Crew summaries Open Men (Corrimal Black) Peter Scott, Mark Lewis, Ben Jenner, Steve Boscoscuro, Tim Jarrold

• Most outstanding crew of the season for the 2nd year running, definitely the best performed A crew we’ve ever had and one of the fastest in the land but least outstanding boat and tent carriers

• We welcomed Bosco into the 2nd Bow seat to replace our newest Daddy - Wolfy and he did a sterling job

• Again, Corrimal Black was the name on everyone’s lips as the “dark horse” when the big carnivals started to roll around and it wasn’t for a little black cloud following them around at the major end-of-season carnivals, I’m certain the boys would have brought home some silverware

• 3rd at North Cronulla, 3rd in the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series, 4th in the Australian Team Selection Event and semi-finalists at the ASRL Open, Manly and State and Aussie Championships

• Silver medallists at the Branch Championships

Open Men (Corrimal Creeps) Greg Lancaster, Joel Irwin, Chris Nicholson, Josh Graham, Niels Glahn-Bertelsen

• Most promising crew of the season and would have been a real threat at the end-of-season majors in the Reserves but chose to step up to A’s after their success in the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series

• We welcomed these light-weight fitness freaks over from North ‘Gong and despite their hipster style, the boys settled into the way we do things at Corrimal quickly and easily

• The boys showed lots of speed and skill throughout the season but a combination of luck and the conditions didn’t do them any favours late in the season

• Solid performers at the Mexican Desmadre and Mad Monday • Gold medallists in the Reserves at the Branch Championships

Open Women Luke Erven, Jo Massey, Mel Beretov, Kat Wilkie, Rach Filan

• We welcomed Jo, Kat and Rach to the club, joining Mel in a crew that was a bit short on experience

• It turned out to be a tough season for the girls and Luke in many respects but hopefully we’ve all learned something from the experience, namely the importance of leaving your ego outside the boat, listening to your sweep and regular, fair dinkum training in and out of the boat

• In saying that, we wouldn’t have won the WBSBS Club Championship if it wasn’t for the points that the girl’s earned when they competed

• Looking forward to a much-improved 2015/16 season with some expected crew changes

P a g e | 20

Reserve Men (Corrimal Comb-Overs) Tony Cartwright, Craig Hyslop, Ben Malcolm, Craig Johnston, Glenn Staples

• Peas in a pod - 4 balding, surf boat rowing stalwarts having another crack • Crakkas Johnston joined us from Fairy Meadow, bringing with him a bucket

load of skill, strength and experience but most importantly, the ability to motivate his crew through his effort

• Given the constraints of work and young families, the boys still worked hard with high expectations regardless of the fact that their competitive shadows are lengthening in the setting sun

• Their individual work ethic combined with their collective skills and experience meant that they were on the speed and a respected opponent whenever they lined up

• The Comb-Overs made Sunday at all of the championship carnivals but Lady Luck seemed to be in other boats at key moments

Reserve Men (Corrimal Pistons) Travis Down, Kris Walton, Matt Gatwood, Luke Ryder, Ben Smede

• The outfall from the Mexican Desmadre resulted in an early season crew change with Gatty stepping in for Walks

• The Desmadre debacle, combined with conflicting work rosters created significant disruption for the boys but they battled on courageously all the way to the State Titles

• The Pistons performed strongly in the WBSBS, finishing 3rd

23 Men (Corrimal Black) Peter Scott, Jordan Scott, Kurt Gray, James Olsen, Shane Thelan

• The revolving 2nd Bow seat saw James Olsen having a crack in what seemed to be a better cultural fit

• James was able to use the athleticism, fitness, discipline and desire learned and practiced as a representative hockey player to transition relatively easily into this tough new sport

• Strong performances early in the season saw the boys in contention for the NSW Team and then disaster struck, James injured his bicep and triceps in a wake-boarding fall. This was compounded by a string of crew illnesses following James’ recovery and as a result, Bulli edged the boys out of the highly valued rep spot

• Disappointed but determined to make amends, the boys finished the season strongly with 2nd place in the WBSBS, 2nd place Navy ASRL Series, 2nd place at North Cronulla, 1st place in Branch Championships in the u23 division and 3rd in Open Men, 5th place at Best of the Best, semi-finalists at Young Guns and top 8 at the Aussies

• With another season in 23’s, hopes are high – remember the definition of madness – doing the same thing and expecting the same result! You blokes do the training bit right but there is room for improvement in the eating, sleeping and socialising department – your destiny is in your own hands

P a g e | 21

23 Women (Corrimal Clovers) Travis Down, Tegan Chapman, Stephanie Primc, Ainsley Midgley, Nicolette Cartwright

• We welcomed Ainsley Midgley to the 2nd Bow seat, a talented sportsperson but new to rowing, replacing Georgia. Ainsley settled in well to the club, the crew and the sport, making new friends at our club and Port Kembla

• Expectations were high in the lead up to the new season with an early start in the boat – hopes of a NSW Team spot and end-of-season medals

• Typical of the age group, disruptions were experienced with HSC, Schoolies and work commitments which tested crew relationships

• The expected results didn’t come the girl’s way but they did end up finishing 2nd overall in the WBSBS and 2nd at the Branch Championships

• Hopefully lessons have been learned in the areas of goals and expectations setting, communication and relationship management – in such a close setting that you get in surf boat rowing, maintaining positive relationships is paramount

23 Women (Corrimal Sea Cups) Luke Erven, Taz Lancaster, Bronte Lancaster, Annaleise Naylor, Taryn Yates

• A much better season from the Sea Cups, largely due to an increased focus on training, leading to improved fitness, strength and surf skills

• The girls were disrupted by work commitments, forcing them to train during the late evenings on many occasions but they hung in there

• Key results were 3rd place overall in the WBSBS, 3rd place at the Branch Championships and top 12 at the State Championships (unfortunately 1st crew on the drink at the Aussies!)

• Over the past few seasons, you have learnt your craft and are becoming a competent crew and whilst you haven’t quite got the results, you have shown your commitment to our surf club and your willingness to lend a hand – it is certainly appreciated and we like having you around

19 Men (Corrimal String Beans) Tony Cartwright, Ryan Ziems, Nic Bargaric, Blake Parsons, Jack Cartwright

• 4 x 6 foot plus athletic-looking young men, who wouldn’t be ecstatic to have that – all built for rowing and as sometimes happens, learning to row a surf boat and everything that comes with the sport is a much more of a difficult task than it first seems

• Many hours were spent in the creek and on the erg trying to learn the basic skills. On the non-technical side, we were trying to balance work and school obligations and learn self-discipline and commitment skills

• Having completed your first season as a surf boat rower, my hope is that you now have a very good understanding of what it takes to not only participate in this sport but to also be proficient and successful

• Thanks for the effort you put in, not only as a rower but to also as a surf club member – I hope you all hang around

P a g e | 22

Special thanks: • Travis - as Vice Boat Captain, your assistance was invaluable, you did an

enormous amount of work, particularly with the oars in the early season, making our boats look so great, helping out with the u23 and Open Men crews and the Mexican Desmadre signage and bus driving duties

• Carole - for looking after all of our carnival entries, club transfers and putting up with our general tardiness in replying to requests for information

• Carole, Fuji and Terry Stedman - for officiating at our carnivals throughout the year, we wouldn’t be competing if it wasn’t for you. Long hours on the beach, putting up with cranky competitors and the distances that you have to travel, we really appreciate your efforts

• Fuji, Terry Stedman and Paul Smith for sorting out and tidying up our Boat Shed and maintaining our pump batteries

Thanks to all Corrimal Rowers for your efforts patrolling, fundraising and for the proud way that you represent our club. A few of things that we need to get better at:

1. Patrols – organising a patrol substitute with plenty of notice and on the flip-side, when someone asks for a swap, let them know early – don’t wait for someone else

2. Patrols – we need to keep getting the higher lifesaving awards e.g. IRB Driver and ARTC, it makes it so much easier to organise patrol swaps

3. Fundraising – surf boat rowing is an expensive sport, if you don’t commit to club fundraising, you will find yourself having to pay a lot more out of your own pocket e.g. carnival entry fees. It could be selling a 150 Club ticket, selling an extra box of chocolates or coming to a fundraising event

4. Communication – whether it responding to a request for a raffle swap or responding to an event invitation, it’s not that bloody hard these days to let other people know what you are doing. We seem to be getting slacker and slacker with every season

2014/15 was a great season for our club, let’s have an even better one this season and bring home some medals!
