Well, we made it to August! The five events we had in July certainly kept me and a lot of othermembers busy: Porsches on the Plaza, our Ladies' Day Autocross, our Swap Meet at TRG, our7/21 Autocross, and the Artisan Wine "Swing in the Vineyards" event at Kachina were all a blast! Ijust love how varied our events are. We are slowing down slightly this month.

This coming weekend (actually two days from this writing) we have a brunch/lunch run to Lake County, hosted by TourMeisters Bob Schoenherr and Anita Benzing. As of last Tuesday's Board meeting, we had 50 people signed up. If youhave missed Bob and Anita's tours in the past, but are joining us for this one, you are in for a treat. Their tours arealways extremely well-planned, well-executed, and full of surprises. The Lake County tour will be no exception. Following the Lake County tour, on 8/11, we have our August autocross (yes, only one this month). Remember that thisyear, our autocrosses are exclusively for PCA members and/or Porsches. The Board wants to make sure that all of ourmembers feel welcome and well-cared-for at autocross. Please do come out and support this fabulous and fun activity. Ipromise a GREAT time. Bring your baby and let her show you what she can do (if the political incorrectness of thatstatement offends you, please replace the "her" and "she" with "him" and "he"). The third weekend of the month gets us into Monterey/Carmel for Legends of the Autobahn, and the Rolex MontereyMotorsports Reunion. This will be my first time going to either. I know, you're thinking how'd this guy get to be ClubPresident? Well, some of us are late bloomers....I am really looking forward to Legends and all the great cars and people.I hope to see many of you down there. I'd like to end with a little September preview:

Back in the March issue, I shared some information about PCA National's annual NewsletterContest, the winners of which are announced at Porsche Parade each July. Prior to Parade, editorsof all Regions are encouraged to enter the contest by submitting two issues of the prior year'snewsletter for evaluation. Entries are grouped by class (based on the size of each Region) andevaluated for layout, navigation, content, scope, and variety by a group of judges, who determinethe winner from each class. For this year's contest, I submitted the October and December issuesfrom last year.

I am pleased to announce that der Riesenbaum placed fifth among newsletters in its class. We received positive feedbackin several areas, including overall quality of content and layout, as well as "trailblazing the future" with regard to derRiesenbaum's digital format. I think it is very important to note that many Regions still maintain a printed "magazine"publication, and that it will take some time for members - and judges - to fully embrace the digital format. Based on thisadoption curve, I am ecstatic about how we fared in this year's contest, and I'm looking forward to even better results nextyear. As one (anonymous) judge shared in his or her evaluation:

Within PCA, der Riesenbaum appears to be one of the pioneers of the digital-only newsletter. Of those Regions that haveeschewed the printed magazine, most have chosen PDF as an "online" format, perhaps to retain control over formattingand layout, or perhaps "by default." The Redwood Region, however, has embraced a format that is more "friendly" to e-mail and the Web, even if it gives up some richness in layout capability to do so. In so doing, the Region has shown thata highly effective newsletter can be produced in this format. While there are some areas for potential improvement -potentially in the coverage of Regional events and in the use of photography - der Riesenbaum offers very strong content,featuring excellent writing from a membership that is eager to contribute to their newsletter. As the Redwood Regioncontinues to blaze the trail forward for other PCA Regions to no doubt follow in time, I will continue to watch the evolution

of der Riesenbaum with great interest. We should all be proud to receive this praise, as well as recognition at the PCA National level. Thank you all for yourcontinued contributions to der Riesenbaum. CH

Members who have participated in a Redwood Region Autocross this year are familiar with our custom t-shirts, designed by President Vern Rogers and Vice President/Editor Chris Harrell for the 2012 Autocrossseason. Our t-shirt design was awarded 2nd place (nationally) at this year's Porsche Parade in Salt LakeCity. Congratulations to Redwood Region for this national award and recognition, and thanks to Hi TecAutomotive for sponsoring this year's Autocross series and shirts. D inner Run to Sonoma - Sa tu rday , June 30 , 2012by Gordon Reynolds, Redwood Region member Those of us with Saturday morning obligations that prevent us from joining Redwood Region'svarious brunch fun runs and other events greatly appreciate the addition of runs on other times anddays. First, a Sunday morning run, which I gather was well attended (I was away), then shortlythereafter, this delightful June 30th dinner run to Sonoma, capably led by our editor, Chris Harrell. We owe a lot of thanks to the members who devote an immense amount of time planning,identifying routes, test driving them (OK, that's fun), and arranging for parking and good spots for us

to chow down. For this event, kudos go to: Joe Burroughs, our agent in Sonoma who located the restaurant and arrangedfor reserved parking; Secretary Mike Hinton, who had the arduous duty of driving the area with Chris to lock in a route(OK, more fun); Event Director Don Magdanz, who handles the not insubstantial paperwork for this event and others tomake sure we don't stub a toe on regs and permits, and last, but certainly not least, Chris' cheering section andnavigator, wife Veronica, who accompanied him in identifying the potential route a couple weekends prior, arming him withinfo for the drive with Mike.

Ah yes, about the run....Twenty-two cars and 40 people turned out for the mid-day start (3:30 p.m.) from Chevy's atRowland Plaza in Novato. Weather was clear and warm, with everyone in good spirits: me in particular, as the afternoon

start enabled me to fire up the "White Whale" and give it some exercise with the Club. Routine releases signed, routemaps given to the drivers (I would rue later the fact that I only gave the map a cursory glance before we started), and wewere off.... What the first stretch (across Route 37 and up Lakeville Hwy) lacked in driving challenges was made up for by thebucolic farm scenes and pastoral open space. To drive great Porsche roads, the first step is to get to them, right? Afterthe ho-hum stretch and a rest stop at the Glen Ellen Village Market, we headed out for the raison d'etre of the day, acurly amalgam of wine country back roads to satisfy the most critical fun run aficionado. Only one little problem: I caughtthe red light at the Sonoma Highway signal, where a left turn is followed immediately by a right onto Trinity Road. Carsahead had made the right, and I blithely continued along Sonoma Highway until a glance in the rear view revealedseveral Porsches, whose drivers had given more than a cursory glance at the map, turning right. A quick u-turn and a leftgot me back on the prescribed route, and what followed was the highlight of my day. Do you have any idea how muchfun it can be to catch up to a group of cars on perfect Porsche roads? Heaven! A delicious five-course dinner ($25 plus drinks) awaited us at Plaza Bistro in Sonoma, which capped a thoroughlyenjoyable day with camaraderie, jokes, a few lies, and good conversation...not to mention good wine.

The Mid f ie ld Repor t : Observa t ions f rom an Au toc ross Appren t i ceby Mike Hinton, Redwood Region Secretary The Redwood Region hosted two autocross events in July, which is an unusual occurrence. Thefirst event was held on July 7, and was designated as a "Ladies' Day" event, with flowers, specialprizes, and a novice-friendly course. The second event, on July 21, was our regularly-scheduledevent. For dedicated autocrossers, July would be a great month! I was asked to arrive early at the first event, since our Autocross Director David Bunch wasattending the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City and the autocross team needed help setting up.

Fortunately, other members, including our Past President Greg Maissen, stepped into the breach and enabled the setup ofthe event to proceed smoothly. As the time for the drivers' meeting approached, it was apparent that attendance wasgoing to be sparse. Those of us who were there were asking ourselves where is everyone? and will we have enoughparticipants to actually run the event? The situation appeared dire, but in the end, enough people arrived, and it was timeto start the event, albeit with a somewhat skeleton crew among course workers and timing and scoring personnel. Our current President, Vern Rogers, designed a relatively fast, flowing course to challenge the drivers. The coursefeatured the usual slalom sections, and the typically bumpy ride through the go-kart section. As our Vice President ChrisHarrell and I walked the course and chalked the marker cones, we tried to develop strategies that would lead to fasttimes. Much of the decision-making was taken away, as the slaloms featured pointer cones that dictated the path to betaken. One less thing to think about!

There are advantages to small participant groups. The main benefits are that everyone gets to make many runs, and thereis very little down-time between runs. The short time between runs can be challenging if you've progressed to the stagewhere you monitor your tire pressures between runs, however. You'll need to keep your tire pressure gauge handy, andyou'll want to remove your valve caps to speed up the process. Obviously, the disadvantage to a small group is thateveryone has to work both sessions and, often, you'll have to man a worker station alone, which requires moreconcentration. Chris and I were in the same run group this time, and it would be interesting for us to compare times. For the first time,Chris brought out his 1972 914, which is classified in the same group as Barney (AX16, the slowpokes!). We were bothlooking forward to seeing how we and the cars would compare. Vern's course design proved to be popular among thedrivers in our run group, as it did not include any crushingly slow sections, and seemed to flow well. After a couple ofruns to warm the tires, we got down to business. Unsurprisingly, Chris and his 914 clocked nearly the same time andBarney and I. Overall, of course, we were mid-pack, but we were both pleased with our cars and maybe even our driving!All too soon, our morning runs were complete, and it was time to work. The small group meant that there was non-stopaction, but it also meant that the work session was short. After no time at all, we all gathered for the bench-racingsession that passes for the lunch break at a Redwood Region autocross.

After lunch, Chris and I were set to renew our battle out on the course, but the 914 wouldn't start! Chris was able toquickly diagnose the problem, which was caused by a nearly-disconnected negative battery terminal. Unfortunately, theproblem was caused by the battery breaking its hold-down mounts and sliding out of the battery tray, so Chris couldn't runin the afternoon. Guess he was driving that car pretty hard if he was able to break the battery loose from its mount! THATwould explain why his time was so close to mine, despite a 45 horsepower deficit! My afternoon runs were mostly uneventful until later in the session. The "back" portion of our course is popularly knownas the "skid pad," because in certain configurations, the course is set up such that you make a complete circle during onerun. I actually think it's called the skid pad because the asphalt is always slippery through there, even when it's dry. Inany case, I'd had some success by going through that section with the back end sliding just a bit. On one of my final runs,I was sliding just a bit more, thinking it's ok; I've got this. Suddenly, it was oh ****, I DON'T have this, and around I went!It was a pretty simple spin, and there was plenty of time to remember to depress both the brake and clutch pedals as Iwent around. Nothing was bruised, except for my ego (and my time)! It was another good learning experience. I'll report on the July 21 event in our next newsletter, since I won't be able to attend the next event scheduled for August11. The attendance has been a bit light at our last three events, so I would encourage all of you, rookies and veteransalike, to test you and your car against our challenging courses. A good time is guaranteed!

Wash and Sh ine your Be loved Porsche , Par t 2 : What to Do a f te r Wash ing yourCar

by Bob Schoenherr, Redwood Region Membership Director and Zone Concours Champion In Part 1, I talked about how to wash your Porsche. Sometimes washing and waxing your car is not enough to get a glossy shine on the surface.Contaminants like bird droppings, brake dust, and environmental pollutants settle and stay on yourcar's surface, particularly your clear coat. Clear coats were made to handle this kind of abuse bythe environment, but even the clear coat gets rough and dull. You can wash all you want, but soapand water alone will never remove these contaminants; the safe way to remove contaminants is

with a clay bar treatment. I use a clay bar on my car to make the surface smooth and ready for wax especially, whenpreparing for Concours.

What you need:

clay bar (get from an online source or use Mother's, which you can get at any automotive store)detail spray as a clay lubricantmicrofiber towelscarnauba waxmicrofiber applicatorsoft cotton clothing (I call mine the scrubs)orbital polisher (optional)

Let's get started... Step 1: Park your car in the shade and let the car's surface cool. Wash the car with car soap and a soft sponge toremove all surface debris. Rinse it and let it dry completely. Step 2: Take the clay bar and make a palm size pancake. Spray detail spray on the clay bar to get started. Step 3: Spray the detail spray on a small area of your car's surface. Rub the clay bar across the lubricated area severaltimes. Rub the clay bar back and forth, from right to left. You do not have to rub in the detail spray like wax. Continue torub the bar over the wet area until it glides seamlessly and smoothly over the surface. Once it moves effortlessly, youknow that the debris has been removed from that portion of the car. NEVER let the clay bar get dry or stick to the car'ssurface. NOTE: Look at the clay to see the small pieces of debris and contaminants it picked up. Fold the clay bar over when thearea touching the paint looks dirty. Do this frequently. Step 4: As you finish cleaning each area with the clay bar, dry that area with a microfiber towel. You will feel a smoothfinish. Step 5: Move to another area and repeat steps 2-4. Do this to the entire car. Start with the roof, hood and trunk, andwork down the car to the bottom. Usually the bottom is where you miss due to lack of flexibility to get on your knees andreally clean. Save your clay and do bottom items last. Place unused clay into a sealed plastic zip bag with a small amount of water to keep it moist for future use. Now you are ready to wax the car. Be aware that once you clay bar your car, no wax is left on the vehicle's surface. Youneed to feed your paint with a good quality carnauba wax. Here is a link about waxing your car. Read the directions on how to apply the wax. I like to use microfiber applicators thatare clean and moist when I do a waxing to my car. I also like to rub in the wax and then wait for it to dry before buffing itoff the surface. Be careful not to apply or buff off the wax with a dirty towel or applicator. A dirty towel or applicator willscratch the surface. For all wax and sealant products, follow these basic instructions(from http://www.autopia.org/forum/guide-detailing/80230-how-properly-wax-your-

Work in a shaded area out of direct sunlight.Use the applicator recommended or provided by the manufacturer.Some products may allow you to coat the entire car before buffing off, but most do not.Follow the wax manufacturer's instructions on whether or not to allow the wax to dry (haze) before buffing.Use a small amount of wax at a time, and rub it in well. If you use too much wax, you're wasting the product andyour time.If the wax residue does not buff off easily, switch to a clean wipe towel.Apply your wax in a back-and-forth motion, not in circles. If you are creating swirls, you need to replace yourapplicator or towels.

After waxing, your car's paint should feel slick and smooth, and be free of streaks and smudges.

What do you do if, after all this work, you still have streaks and areas that don't want to buff out perfectly? There areseveral tricks, but the easiest is to park your car in the sun for 10 to 15 minutes. Let it get warm, but not hot, and thentake it back inside the garage or shaded area. Next, use your favorite detail spray and a fresh buffing towel to wipe downthe affected areas. The warmth of the sun softens the wax, allowing it to buff out to a clear, high gloss. Regular waxing is necessary to protect your car's paint from the elements. In addition to sealing and protecting, waxesand sealants also improve the appearance of freshly washed and polished paint. If you use the right products, you cansuccessfully layer waxes and sealants to make your paint look deeper and almost liquid. If you want to go "beyond the swirls", you can use an orbital polisher. There are many dual-action orbital systems, but allthe systems work the same. Certificate of Deposit (CD) total investment stands at $10,162.58.Money Market Account stands at $7,571.76.Checking account stands at $13,971.79 in total.

$9,319.03 in unrestricted funds.$4,652.76 in funds restricted as the autocross reserve.

The major income items for the period were:$3,750.00 from Autocrosses #4, #5 and #6.$940.00 from Porsches on the Plaza.$286.00 from Goodie Store sales.

Major expense items for the period were:$1,209.60 for Autocrosses #4, #5 and #6. (Track rental for #5 and #6 plus miscellaneous)$230.92 for meeting dinners.

Autocross #5 -- Ladies Day -- had income of $590.00 and expenses of $585.82 for a net gain of $4.18.Autocross #6 had income of 1,045.00 and expenses of $544.78 for a net gain of $500.22.At least 17 drivers are required for an autocross to break even.Attached is a rough cash flow projection for the rest of 2012. It is estimated that we could donate $4,000 toCASA, have $2,500 to support the Holiday Party and carryover about $1,300 "profit" into 2013.

The Executive Council reviewed the cash flow projections for the remainder of the year. Based on theseprojections, it appears that the Club will be able to donate $4,000 to CASA, and will be able to subsidize theHoliday party by $2,500. Each of these amounts represents a $500 increase from 2011.

Past-President's Report: Nothing to report this month. der Riesenbaum Editor's report: Submitted prior to Board Meeting: The July issue of der Riesenbaum was sent on 7/10/12 to 645 email addresses; 304 (47.1%) opened as of 7/24/12. Loweropen rates are typical for us during the summer, as many people are on vacation.

Highlights2012 PCA National Newsletter Contest Results (for 2011 newsletter) are in. Redwood Region placed 5th outof 15 Regions in Class IV. We did a fabulous job considering that 2011 was a transitional year. Key points:

Our total score was 543 out of 636We lost 27 points due to no technical articles and 3 points because we only produced 11 issues.The winner (Santa Barbara) scored a 590. 2nd place was 571.We received consistent feedback on our excellent editing, quality of content, and making the most ofthe email marketing platform (Constant Contact) that we useJudges requested more photos!!

There were 1300unique IP's that accessed the site.Activity on the site was spread evenly during the month with the two busiest days being July 18 and 19.Concours and Autocross were the most popular pages. The most popular flyer was Porsche Parts, Pickles andWine. Tied for second were Artisan Winery Tour and Ledson Concours.Daily country activity was led by the United States, China, Ukraine, Japan and Germany accounting for 93% of thevisitors. ipads, iphones and androids continue to access the site, 222 this month. Top browsers are IE and Firefox.

Social Media Report:

We are up to 351 friends of the RR FB page..gaining about 2-3 new friends on a weekly basis.Still working with the LPR Region on getting a "sponsor" page up. It requires extensive knowledge of FB appswhich are beyond my knowledge! We should have a solution soon!
