• To grow as an involved and loving community, • To preserve church and family traditions, • To provide a Catholic education and opportunities for
spiritual growth to all age groups, • To reach out to those in need.
As a parish, we dedicate ourselves to live out our faith through service where each member shares with others the gifts and talents received from God.
Reflections on the Readings
Laetare Sunday The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means “rejoice.” Tradi-tionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy’s opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the antiphon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter. Today’s Gospel reading is taken from John’s Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus’ reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nicodemus with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunder-stood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in the questions he posed to Jesus. In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today’s Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous ser-pents to punish them for their complaints. The Israelites re-pented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses’ prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection. The second part of today’s Gospel is a theological reflec-tion on Jesus’ words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John’s Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. In John’s reflection, we find an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to re-veal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives. Source: https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/sunday-connection

Tenebrae Speech Choir needed.
Enter into the church’s most holy time with the Tenebrae service. The word “tenebrae” is Latin for “darkness: or
“shadows”. The purpose of the service is to recreate the important aspects of the passion story. The Tenebrae
service begins with the church lit with candles on a cen-trally-placed candelabra. As the chants and readings
progress, candles are gradually extinguished. Tenebrae service will be held Wednesday evening,
March 28, 2018 at 7:00PM in the church. Please consider being a special part of this service as part of the “Speech Choir”. Speech choir members as-
semble in the choir lo and read aloud in unison the Psalms. Please contact the Parish Office if you would
like to sign up for this Holy Week opportunity, no singing voice is needed.
Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound Needed.
This is a valuable, caring ministry to our ill and homebound parish community, as we extend the Body of Christ to those who are unable to join us at Mass. The Eucharistic Minis-
ter becomes a vital link between the parish community and the member who is hospitalized or homebound. Please call
the Parish Office 304-277-2911, for further details.

Stations of the Cross are held in the church every Friday during Lent.
Could you walk a mile in Jesus’s shoes? The Stations of the Cross bring us closer to Christ as we meditate on the great love He showed for us in His most sorrowful
Passion.
We have Stations of the Cross at 2:50 in the afternoon with the school children, however any-
one and everyone is welcome. We also have Stations and a Com-munion Service at 7:00PM in the evening.
Consider including this prayerful opportunity as a part of your Lenten journey. Invite someone to join you that has never experienced praying the Stations of the Cross or has not attended for a long time. Make this part of
your family’s Lenten activities.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at Corpus Christi Parish
every Thursday following the 8:30AM Mass until 5:30PM.
There is a book of intentions available on the table in the back of church for you to enter prayer intentions each week so that these
intentions can be included by those praying during Adoration.
Remember Canon (Church) Law requires that someone is physically present in the church when the Blessed
Sacrament is exposed.
A sign up sheet is also now in the back of church for Adoration on Holy Thursday following the Mass of Our Lord’s Supper until
Night Prayer at 10:30PM.
Why not make Eucharistic Adoration a part of your Lenten Journey. Give God an hour of your time!
Sign Up Sheets are in the back of the church.
The Fourth Sunday Of Lent March 11, 2018
What if I'm at the midpoint of Lent and not much is going on?
I began with the best of intentions, but I am not sure what I'm doing or what I want to be doing. Can my Lent be 'rescued"? Can a six week journey be completed in the remaining next
two or three weeks - waiting for my heart to be open? Of course, the answer is “yes.” It doesn't take long for God, when
we are ready.
The first step to beginning again has already begun, if I have the desire for something real during Lent. This isn't the same as "guilt." Feeling guilty for not doing much about Lent won't
get us very far. What we need is a real desire - a real sense of expectation that God has something for me to hear, to learn,
to change, and I want to be ready to listen. A little desire is enough to shape deeper desires.
Once we can say we want to make something of these
precious days remaining in Lent, then we can start naming some more specific desires.
• Maybe there is a streak of stubbornness or impatience or harshness that keeps putting me at odds with people.
• Perhaps there is an old wound or a fresh experience of hurt or loss that has turned into a festering anger that robs me of simple joys and sorrows or compassion for suffering of others.
• Maybe I am obsessed with how I look - how others see me - and my choices each day are guided by what will make other people like me, and my mood each day goes up and down depending upon people's response to me.
• Or, maybe a homily or something I read recently made me realize that I really have not paid attention to the needs of the poor - and perhaps I've even taken stands and voted against issues and candidates who stand on the side of the poor. After some reflection, I may just real-ize I'm not very grateful for what has been given me, and therefore, I'm just not very happy, generous or free.
Lent begins when I can say "Help me Lord!"
Now I can turn to the Lord, with some real, concrete desires. Now I can practice waking up each morning and naming a
desire - while I'm putting on my slippers, or taking a shower or getting dressed: "Lord, it feels so good to be honest with my-self before you. Let me know your presence today. Help me face the challenges that will be there today” With these de-
sires to let God's grace transform me, then I can pause before going to bed each night, and look back through the day to thank God for the places I felt God's presence and help.
Let’s give Lent a new start in the days ahead. God is offering us more than we can ask or imagine.
The Fourth Sunday Of Lent March 11, 2018
March 19th marks the Catholic celebration of St. Josephs Day. In some Catholic communities elaborate altars are
constructed in honor of this saint. The tradition, commemorat-ing the relief St. Joseph provided during a famine in Sicily, began in the late 1800’s . St. Joseph’s day is not just for
Italian-Americans. This celebration offers a chance to share food with others and for believers, a way to express gratitude
for any sort of fortune in their lives.
St. Joseph altars, representing the Holy Trinity, are divided into three sections with a statue of St. Joseph at the head. The devout place candles, figurines, flowers, medals and other items around the alter creating a beautiful, lush and overflowing effect. Since the altars thank St. Joseph for
relieving hunger, offerings of food are essential.
Cookies, cakes and breads, often in the form of shell fish, are common decorations for altars. Fava beans, or “lucky beans”
are particularly associated with St. Joseph because they sustained the Sicilians throughout famine. Pick some up for good luck! As tradition has it, the altar is broken up on St.
Joseph’s day with a ceremony of costumed children, pretend-ing to look for shelter, finding sustenance at the altar. Food
and donations are then distributed to the poor.
The Cathedral of Saint Joseph, 1300 Eoff Street, Wheeling, will hold Solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours) each Sunday during Lent (including Palm Sunday) at 6:00 PM In addition to the prayers and music, there will be a guest priest each week who
will offer a Lenten Reflection.

The Fourth Sunday of Lent A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar
Today’s gospel speaks of light and darkness. Often a parent is deliberately “left in the dark.” Darkness can be comforting for it makes no demands on us. Light can be disturbing for it forces us to take action.
Parents walk a delicate balance of when to “sit in the dark” and when to “turn on the lights.”
