    History of Wellness Works

    In 2002, a group of enthusiastic City of Kamloops employees collaboratecreate a workplace wellness program for employees. With support from

    Senior Management team, Wellness Works was created. Since its concepthis program has grown to oer various activities and initiatives designepromote a healthy workplace for the City of Kamloops sta.

    Some successful initiatives made available to City of Kamloops employeinclude Canadas Healthy Workplace Week, Weight Watchers, nicotine ceprograms, Walk for Wellness, Hearts @ Work Health Program, and many m

    The City sta Wellness Works program also encourages employees to taactive role in the community and has participated in events such as Runthe Cure, Terry Fox Run, Adopt-A-Road, Operation Red Nose, and the RiveWellness Walk.

    ExpansionDue to an overwhelmingly positive response from City of Kamloops stadecision was made to oer aspects of this highly successful program to Kamloops business community. The comprehensive and innovative desof this new community-focused Wellness Works program allows employto select from a series of wellness initiatives varying from physical tnessnutrition, to risk factor prevention, and much more in helping to create apersonalized wellness approach to suit each businesses need.

    A.WhatEmployeesWant

    1. Employee Interest Survey

    Information

    The Employee Interest Survey was developed with adaptations from the British Heart Foundations "Think Fit!" samplequestionnaire and "employee assessment" questionnaire. It is designed as an easy to use tool to target employee interewithin the scope of a wellness program. The employee survey will be administered on two separate occasions throughthe subscription period: initially to determine the specic needs of the organization and again nearing the end of thesubscription period to gauge employee satisfaction with the Wellness Works program. By assessing and addressing thespecic need of employees through wellness initiatives, employers can be condent that employees will benet from timplementation of new programming.

    Program Description

    The Employee Interest Survey can be delivered in paper or electronic format. In order to obtain the best possibleinformation on workplace health, this survey should be oered to all employees and is best completed on existing

    employee work time for optimal response. Completion time for the survey is approximately ten minutes per employeeIn order to obtain optimal response rates for the survey, it is important to generate some excitement prior toimplementation. The Wellness Coordinator will assist the organization in delivering an "upcoming survey notice" at leasone week prior to implementation; in delivering this notice, it is important to state whether an incentive will be providefor participation as this will likely result in a higher response rate. The Wellness Coordinator can assist in the arrangemenan incentive with the employer.

    If surveys are distributed in paper format, they will be delivered by the Wellness Coordinator at an established time,completed and returned to a sealed envelope that will be returned for analysis. If using electronic format, the survey wdistributed via email and returned to the Wellness Coordinator for analysis.

    Once the process is complete, please allow two to three weeks for processing. Once the surveys are processed, theWellness Coordinator will contact the employer to establish a time to review results and make recommendations.

    Information

    An unparalleled resource to any wellness program is the availability of up-to-date wellness programming to employeesThe Wellness Works website will provide a secure site specic to your organization and be customized to reect yourspecic program oerings. Including exciting features such as weekly nutrition and tness tips, event calendar andannouncements, this resource will help keep you and your employees engaged in your corporate wellness initiative.

    Program Description

    The Wellness Works Website will be customized to reect the corporate wellness program built by your organization. Logiinformation will be provided to one representative from the organization to be distributed to all employees.     Information

    Upon initiation of Wellness Works as a service available toemployees, it is important for an employer to showcase theircommitment to their employees. This initiative is a fun andinteractive way to show employees the great programs availablthrough their new Wellness Program.

    Program Description

    The Welcome to Wellness Health Fair will feature a variety ofdierent stations that employees can visit at a convenient timeduring the workday to sample new features available through tWellness Works program. Stations can include blood pressuremonitoring, postural assessment, waist circumference measuresinformation pamphlets on free services through Wellness Works

    healthy snacks, nutrition tips, and many more. The Welcome toWellness Health Fair will be completed over a maximum of fourhours to allow all employees to access the service.

    The Welcome to Wellness Health Fair is an initiative that is includin the price of any Wellness Works Subscription. It can be used showcase dierent programs available or tailored to the specicneeds of the organization.

    Information

    Hike the Sights is an initiative designed to showcase theextraordinary terrain the City of Kamloops has to oer.     This initiative is an important component to any wellness progras it showcases access to free amenities for employees as well adevelops camaraderie within the workplace.

    Program Description

    Hike the Sights is easy to launch and implement. The Wellness

    Coordinator will work with the corporation to create awarenesswithin the workplace through the use of the Wellness Workswebsite and information brochures. Once awareness is createdwithin the workplace, the Wellness Coordinator will provide hikesites and times via the Wellness Works website. Additionally, a hcopy schedule will be made available to the workplace to displahigh trac employee areas.

    Hike locations, times, distances, and skill levels will vary throughthe year in order to provide diversity and ongoing challenges foemployees. Hikes will be organized on a bimonthly basis fromMarch through November. Each hike location will be identiedthe start point for increased visibility. Additional hike times may

    scheduled based on employee interest.This initiative will be based on participation from various dierebusinesses, which will ensure participation as well as provideopportunities to network with other individuals within thecommunity. By exploring the surrounding community under thguidance of an experienced hike leader, employees are accessinvaluable resources to ensure long-term physical activity.

    Information

    As an employer, health and wellbeing of employees is paramount in ensuring productivity and satisfaction of employeeOne of the key components to healthy employees is physical activity. With this in mind, the Corporate Wellness Pass wacreated at the Tournament Capital Centre. Whether you have ve employees or 100+ employees, the Corporate WellnePass is a positive way to promote employee physical activity. Additionally, it poses no cost to the organization!

    Program Description

    The Tournament Capital Centre is a full tness facility oering all the amenities of tness, including two fully equippedgyms, the Wellness Centre and the Athlete Performance Centre, to meet all levels of weight, cardio, and functional tnea 200 m indoor track and 400 m outdoor track; the Canada Games Aquatic center featuring 50 m, eight-lane competitiosized pool with waterslide, leisure pool, steam room, sauna, and hot tub. With all facilities on site, the Tournament CapitCentre is equipped to meet the needs of all individuals, regardless of interest or physical ability.

    The Corporate Wellness Pass is based on number of employees within an organization, and from this, three discountedmembership prices are available for full facility access. An employer with 5 to 50 employees qualies for a "Bronze" leve

    discount (10%) with an annual rate of $432* for individuals or $864** for families. Employers with 51 to 100 employeesqualify for a "Silver" level discount (15%) with an annual ate of $408* for individuals or $816 **for families.     1. Community Corporate Challenges

    Program Information

    Community corporate challenges will be organized through theWellness Coordinator and will occur throughout the year. Allorganization will be invited to join and participate in variouschallenges throughout the year.

    At various times throughout the year, the Wellness Coordinator wmake an organization aware that a corporate challenge is occurri

    The Wellness Coordinator will provide all necessary materials tohost awareness in the organization and support each organizatioparticipation. By participating in community corporate challenge

    employers and employees alike will be able to network within thecommunity while increase employee awareness of the importanhealth and wellness.

    An example community corporate challenge could be the RiversTrail Wellness Walk. This annual walk is held over an 18 km sectiothe Rivers Trail. This walk can be completed based on ability levea 3, 6, 9, or 18 km walk. Wellness Works will challenge all employeto participate in the walk and try to achieve the furthest cumulatedistance walked. The organization that walks the furthest will recrecognition through Wellness Works as well as receive an incentivfor participation!

    2. Adopt-A-Road

    Information

    Adopt-A-Road is an initiative through the City of Kamloops that provides organizations, clubs, and citizens the opportunto help keep Kamloops beautiful. This program relies on volunteers within the City of Kamloops to donate their time tocollect litter and debris along arterial frontages. By registering for this initiative, an organization can demonstrate leaderwithin the community and foster a greater sense of community within its employees.

    Program Description

    Adopt-A-Road is based on a minimum of three annual organized litter collections along a chosen road in Kamloops. ThCity of Kamloops will provide supplies necessary to complete the task, with the organization providing the volunteers.Each organization is free to choose any three occasions throughout the year when litter collection is convenient foremployees and must only provide 24 hours notice to arrange for pickup of supplies from the City. Once an organizatiohas successfully completed the initial litter cleanup, the City of Kamloops will post and maintain an Adopt-A-Road signstating the name of the volunteering organization. Signage recognizing the organization will remain in place for theduration of the commitment period of the organization (at least two years).

    Ever wonder how t your employees really are? How wouldthey stack up against national averages for health and tness?

    This service will provide employees with a baseline risk factorassessment, tness testing, eective goal setting, and exerciserecommendations!

    Program Description

    Assessments are an important component in determine health wellness, as well as to prepare employees for safe exercise. Therare several options for assessments available for employees.

    Comprehensive Fitness AssessmentCost: $70/employee

    This assessment is completed at the Tournament Capital CentreWestsyde Community Centre over a one-hour period. It consistof a comprehensive health screening, a full tness assessment,and a review of ndings. A report will be completed includingrecommendations for success.

    Exercise ConsultationCost: $30/employee

    Spend 30 minutes with a City of Kamloops Kinesiologist tocomplete a health history review, a short goal setting session,and a short tness assessment (including muscular strength andposture). Finish o with a comprehensive review of ndings anrecommendations for success.

    Mini-AssessmentCost: $20/employee

    Spend 15 minutes with a City of Kamloops Kinesiologist to assewaist circumference, complete one muscular strength test, and

    undergo a brief postural assessment. Employees will be sent howith an information package regarding general tness guidelinand explanation of tests completed.

    Ergonomic AssessmentCost: $70/hour

    This is assessment is by request only. A Kinesiologist will beavailable over a one-hour period to observe job demands andmake recommendations to increase the safety of a workstationthrough proper ergonomics. This assessment will include a writreport including recommendations set forth by a Kinesiologist.

    All employees participating in an assessment must complete informed consent prior to participation. The ComprehenFitness Assessment must be completed in a gym setting (e.g. TCC or employee gym, if available). Exercise Consultationsand Mini-Assessments can be completed on site at any workplace.

    This service can be completed on its own or can be joined with another wellness event (e.g. Wellness Day, HealthyWorkplace Week, or a Corporate Challenge).

    1. Walk for Health Pedometer Program

    Information

    Walk for Health is a workplace initiative designed to encourageindividuals to become more physically active by promoting asimple modality of action: walking!

    This program is designed in such a way to encourage individualsbegin to accumulate the minimum recommended 30 minutes oactivity per day, as recommended by the US Surgeon General. 30minutes of physical activity is needed on most days of the weekto obtain health benets; through the use of pedometers andthis walking program, employees are challenged to increase theiphysical activity in a fun and interactive way.

    Program DescriptionWalk for Health is designed around the use of simple pedometersto track the amount of steps an individual logs per day. The averasedentary individual logs only 1,000 to 3,000 steps per day, whereamore active individuals log 10,000+ steps per day.

    Walk for Health is an initiative that can be run on an individual basor in a team style format. On an individual basis, employees areencouraged to track their own steps per day and challenged toincrease their personal step count. In a team style format, individuare brought together though varying departments or create theirown teams to compete within the company. Alternately, businesscan compete with each other in a team format to complete a certdistance/timeline for a challenge.

    To ensure success when oering a Walk for Health program, specitimelines can prove to be very benecial. Suggested timelinesinclude 6-week, 12-week, and 16-week challenges. By setting spetime constraints, employees will remain engaged within the challeand are more likely to succeed.

    There are a number of fun and interactive ways to generate excitement within this program. A possible add-on to this progis an online tool using interactive maps to track step challenges around the world. This tool can be used in a group or indivformat and provides up-to-the-moment interactive feedback on team challenges, steps accomplished, and distance traveleAnother alternative is to establish challenges specically within the company based on number of steps traveled. Having gto accomplish with incentives or recognition of progress and participation is a great way to keep people involved!

    2. Fitness Blast Sessions

    Information

    Many employees nd it dicult to nd the time for physical actin their day. It is with this in mind that Fitness Blast sessions werdeveloped. Fitness Blast Sessions are 45-minute exercise sessionthat can be held at the workplace (space permitting) or at the

    Tournament Capital Centre. This program is exible to the needthe organization in that a class can be held over the noon hour in the evening and can be developed over a series of weeks (e.gsix-week session) or several dierent classes can be oered to suvarying needs.

    Program Description

    Fitness Blast Sessions are ideal for the busy professional as theyare shorter in format than most group tness classes and are

    customizable to the organizations needs. The Wellness Coordinwill work with the organization to identify the desired class and help to assist in the selection of a location as well as arrange fortness leader to deliver the class.

    Each session will be held over 45 minutes, allowing employeestime to arrive and depart in a timely manner. In addition, eachclass will be led by a certied tness leader to ensure the safetyof participants. Registration is required; therefore, the WellnessCoordinator will provide registration information, which will bemade available to all employees.

    Program Includes

    - Organization of location and tness leader.

    - Needs assessment and registration provided with support fthe organization.

    - Class format and type in conjunction with the organization

    - Discounted class rate.

    3. Train Smart

    Information

    So you have joined a gym, now what? Most individuals joining a gym, be it the rst time or not, generally need some hto start training successfully. Train Smart is an initiative based around three dierent programs oered at the TournameCapital Centre: Start Smart Personal Training, SportFit, and Train with a Kin. Working with a qualied professional, regardof ability, will help employees get the most out of their health and tness pursuits and ensure long-term exercisebehaviours and success. In addition, by registering your company with the Tournament Capital Centre Corporate WellnPass, employees are eligible to receive an initial training sessions at a reduced rate.

    Program Description

    Train Smart is based around three dierent services provided through the Tournament Capital Centre:

    Start Smart Personal Training $90/employee

    Delivered by a certied personal trainer, Start Smart is a great program for beginners to novice exercisers who areapparently healthy. There are several package options when beginning with Start Smart. The rst step is to begin witha Start Smart 90-minute session, which includes a tness assessment, goal review, and personalized exercise program.

    Once this session is completed, employees have the option of continuing exercise independently or, should they chooreturn for a 60-minute update session to measure progress and update their exercise program. Alternatively, employeecan continue to train with a personal trainer on a regular basis with a package such as Start Smart 4 or 8 to maintain moregular contact through 60-minute sessions on an as needed basis.

    Delivered by a certied personal trainer, SportFit is designed for higher functioning individuals with a signicant exercishistory. This program is appropriate for healthy individuals with no apparent health risks and who are looking for a morsport oriented training program. Prior to commencing this program, all individuals are required to complete a healthscreening form. Once the individual has completed the health screening, they are registered and can choose to complone session, four sessions, or eight sessions of prescribed exercise.

    Train with a Kin $70/employee

    A Kinesiologist is a professional holding a Bachelors Degree focusing on the movement and physiology of the humanbody. This program is suited for any individual suering from a chronic condition, injury, or other health concern. AKinesiologist can help prescribe safe exercise to help ensure a speedy recovery and will work within the parameters of aindividuals needs. When starting with this program, each individual must undergo a specic tness assessment and hescreen; included in this is a review of the assessment and recommendations for success. Following the initial assessmenindividuals proceed to Train with a Kin 2, where the recommendations from the initial assessment are translated intoan individual exercise prescription. For individuals interested in more guided exercise sessions and ongoing programprogression, a variety of packages are available, including Train with a Kin 4, 8, 10, and 15, each consisting of a series of60-minute exercise sessions.

    C. Starting Blocks to a Healthy Lifestyle1. Corporate Grocery Tours:

    Information

    With so much available information regarding nutritional recommendations, it is sometimes dicult to pinpoint exactlywhat it is that comprises healthy eating. With this in mind, Wellness Works has developed a series of educational grocertours to assist employees in making healthy food choices. Through three distinct options, it is possible to customize eagrocery tour to the specic need within your organization.

    Program Description

    There are three options for grocery tours organized through the Tournament Capital Centre's Registered Holistic Nutritiavailable to employees. Each grocery tour will provide education surrounding healthy food selection, chemicals andpreservatives, adding variety in food choices, and healthy snacking. In addition, label reading education will be provide

    Nature's Fare Night Tour Cost:

    Conducted from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, this tour can accommodate 20-25 employees and will only be made available on amonthly basis. The night tour is oered after store hours and as such, is very conducive to questions and provides a greeducational opportunity for employees. Each employee will receive a fabric shopping bag and welcome package inaddition to a 10% discount on all products purchased during the tour. The nutritionist will guide employees around thestore and provide education on various aspects of nutrition.

    Nature's Fare Daytime Tour Cost:

    This option allows for grocery tours conducted during business hours and is therefore limited to a maximum of fouremployees. The daytime tour is spread over a one-hour period and does not oer any of the additional perks associatewith the night tour. Due to the short time frame, questions will be limited as the nutritionist will work to cover all thematerial necessary for a comprehensive tour. This option is well suited for lunch time slots as employees will haveappropriate time to arrive and depart without conicting with work requirements.

    3. Nutrition Series Lunch 'n Learn

    Information

    Lunch 'n Learn sessions provide employees with an opportunityto obtain sound education without the challenge of schedulingin additional time after a workday. The Lunch 'n Learn nutritionseries delivered by the Tournament Capital Centre was developthrough the registered holistic nutritionist; this series allows fornutritional education to be brought directly to the employees.

    Program Description

    Each Lunch 'n Learn session is delivered over a 40 - 45 minuteperiod and will be available to a maximum of 20 employees. Thseminars are design to allow employees to enjoy lunch whileattending the session (not provided). There are currently twonutritional series available to organization surrounding nutrition

    well as a one-hour session entitled "Lunch and Seminar". All sersessions can be made available on a single session basis to meethe needs of your organization.     Session1: Dietary Needs - Education surrounding average dailynutritional needs with regard to carbohydrates, protein, fats,sodium, and bre. Additional discussion will focus on importanof spreading calories throughout the day for optimal energy,metabolism, stress management, and digestion.

    Session2: Carbohydrates - Specic focus on carbohydrates andtheir role within the diet. Discussions will include choosing healgrains, learning the functions of the glycemic index (GI) and usithe glycemic index to make healthy carbohydrate choices.

    Session3: Proteins and Fats - Learn about the vital role of fats aproteins in the diet. Topics will include: introduction of new proideas, education surrounding complete and incomplete aminoacids, and the importance of fats and their proper use in the die

    5. Tobacco Reduction ProgramAs provided by Waters Wellness Consulting

    Program Description

    Waters Wellness Consulting oers the following three program options:

    Individual Client Counselling $249/empl

    In this program, employees are seen on a one-on-one basis with a tobacco treatment specialist. This program includes total of ve sessions with each employee. The initial session will take place at either a consulting oce or the employeehome. Follow-up appointments will be conducted one week following the initial consultation and in the one, two, andthree months following (at the consulting oce or by phone).

    Sessions will include cognitive-behavioral, pharmacotherapy and relapse prevention strategies. To assists in the counseprocess, clients will review their goals relating to tobacco reduction, strategies that have been successful/failed in the preadiness and condence to reduce tobacco use, and create an action plan for success.

    Group Sessions $99/empl

    Group sessions will occur in the community on a bi/tri-annual basis, generally occurring in the evening hours. Each serof group sessions will run for a total of six sessions.

    Healthy Workplace Month is an annual event presented thoughGreat-West Life, the Canadian Centre for Health and OccupationSafety, and the National Quality Institute. In 2008, this event wastransformed from a one-week initiative to a month long challengWellness Works would like to recognize this event and supportorganizations in launching their own Healthy Workplace Month.

    Program Description

    Employers/organization will identify one individual to act as the"Healthy Workplace Month Champion". This individual will workwith the Wellness Coordinator to register an organization for the

    challenge and create a monthly event calendar supporting eachweekly theme. Wellness Works and the City of Kamloops will alsoer supplementary services available to all employees participain the month long challenge.

    To increase interest and participation, Wellness Works will createseries of free events to create a community Corporate Challengein conjunction with Healthy Workplace Week. Possible events cainclude a free trial tness class for employees (week one), a freeworkplace seminar on stress management (week two), organizatof corporate team building event such as initiation of Adopt-A-R(week three), and a free employee hike (week four).     4. Ten-week Corporate Challenges

    Program Information

    Challenge your employees to achieve better health and wellness behaviours by hosting a ten-week corporate challenge.By enrolling in this program, an employer will have the opportunity to showcase its commitment to employee wellnessby challenging their organization to achieve better health. This program is entirely customizable to the needs of theorganization and can serve as a great motivator for employee health behavior change.

    Program Description

    This challenge is run over a ten-week period and is developed in conjunction with the Wellness Coordinator. Once achallenge has been created, the employer, with the help of Wellness Works, will create awareness for the challenge, providesupport services for employee success and develop a long term plan for sustainable employee change.

    An example challenge could include a ten-week corporate tness challenge. Over ten weeks, employees will bechallenged to increase their physical activity through specic measures (e.g. number of steps/day, minutes of activity/weeketc.). Support services will be available to employees to ensure success. Advertisement for reduced rate corporate gym

    passes, personal training sessions, on-site group tness classes, and beginning a pedometer program are all suggestions ongetting employees active.

    By working with the Wellness Coordinator, an employer can ensure that all mediums for communicating eective programsare available to ensure a successful challenge. Prices will vary in accordance with program options and features. Contactthe Wellness Coordinator for details.
