“Monodzukuri (the art of product making)”: a leading motive central to JUKI’s work

since its foundation.

JUKI develops products in a business domain incorporating everything from fashion

products (such as clothes and bags) and interior automotive trims (such as car seats

and air bags) to technologically advanced industrial products equipped with precise

electronic PWBs.

JUKI is a leading manufacturer of the 21st century dedicated to a concept of “manu-

facturing” that never changes through the ages. JUKI’s activities span across 180 coun-

tries and are now indispensable to “manufacturers” in many fields. JUKI’s driving force

originates from the “Mind & Technology” and "Customer Creed” concepts expressed in

its corporate slogan.

We learn from our customers and build up new value together with them. JUKI’s most

advanced technologies ever are now supporting the dreams of people living all over

the world.

JUKI supports people's lives and dreams with forefront manufacturing technology.

JUKI evolving as a “solutions-proposal company” dedicated to

supporting customers in the world of smart manufacturing

JUKI has positioned “manufacturing” at the center of its business and offered new

values to markets ever since the time of founding. The manufacturing environment

where we now operate is fluctuating sharply. Constant improvements in technology

are driving competition to new heights globally. JUKI will have to evolve further in or-

der to survive the 21st century.

Elevated labor costs and labor shortages are driving up customer demand for

upgraded production lines (in other words, for smart manufacturing) to improve

quality and productivity. To optimize a customer’s production line, JUKI needs to

comprehensively propose the most productive equipment, the best organization for

manufacturing personnel, and optimal factory layouts and manufacturing flow. We

must also take thorough steps to sharpen our customer’s competitive edge. Beyond

the actual production equipment, we must propose total solutions to help our cus-

tomers evolve.

JUKI has been assigned a clear mission: respond to customer needs and serve cus-

tomers as a “true partner” in business.

JUKI takes pride in its firm partnerships with customers

Our “Customer Creed” concept and “Mind & Technology” slogan are milestones for

JUKI along its way to reformation. JUKI’s high-quality products and detailed service

system originate from its commitment to manufacturing from a customer viewpoint.

When customers all over the world have needs, we have a system to support them

through a global network. We take pride in our firm partnerships and the unshak-

able trust customers have placed in us for many years all around the world.

We aspire to walk with our customers and share in the delights of their successes. This

aspiration empowers us in our efforts to support global manufacturing and enrich

people in every country.

Product planning at JUKI star ts with listening to what the customer has to say. There are many plan-ning chal lenges, requested by our customers, such as “flawless sewing quality for new fiber mate-rials, “deskilled sewing” on factory oors, and “demand for productiv-ity improvements and manpower savings.“JUKI’s plans solve these problems from thorough, custom-er-sided perspectives based on JUKI’s ample experience and tech-nologies as a top manufacturer of industrial sewing machines.JUKI and its partner companies engaged in planning offer cus-tomers the very best “sewing lines” equipped with stand-alone ma-chines, sewing lines for dry sewing, and robotic machines to handle multiple processes all at once.

The biggest challenge facing JUKI customers in the sewing industry is the search for new solutions for sta-ble sewing quality and productivity. JUKI responds by pursuing various forefront technologies targeting innovative product development in the industry. Our efforts have led to the creation of many world-first mechanisms in industrial sewing. Our pursu i t and development of the latest technologies also focus on user-friendly operability

and maintainability and environ-ment-friendly features such as oil-free operation and electric power saving. We also place priority on comfortable use to meet our cus-tomers’ expectations in their long hours of operating JUKI machines by hand. JUKI customers in plants around the world express over-whelming support to JUKI for pro-viding machines that surpass their expectations.

JUKI’s industrial sewing machines are produced by five factories in three different countries based on the “made-near-the-customer” principle: two factories in Japan, two in China, and one in Vietnam. The Ohtawara plant, our mother factory, leads the other four facto-ries by promoting the group-wide sharing of know-how, providing trial products for mass production, formulating company-wide plans

for standardization, and studying manufacturing methods for con-struction. The production process at the Ohtawara plant adheres closely to the practices of “100% good product manufacturing” to maintain JUKI quality as a model for all of the factories in the JUKI group. We also carry out parallel production at two factories to as-sure stable supply in the event of mishaps such as natural disasters.

Our industrial sewing machine is the workhorse at customer facto-ries.JUKI offers line solutions to custom-ers in about 180 countries, along with “machine” proficiency and productivity for industrial sewing and “peace of mind” from a ful-filling support system. The “peace of mind” customers enjoy comes from the knowledge that most of JUKI’s salespeople serving them are full-fledged sales engineers. Industrial sewing machine profes-sionals have learned the product architecture by assembling parts in assembly factories and are well versed in consultation focused on maintenance technology, sewing technology, and productivity analy-sis. JUKI provides sales and service activities to around 80 bases world-wide.

Support to reduce down-time to a minimum is most essential to an in-dustrial sewing machine or any oth-er machine used for production in a customer’s factory. JUKI periodically surveys the capabilities of its ser-vice engineers and deploys staff to service bases all over the world. As general rule, JUKI expects to restore manufacturing operations within 48 hours of any factory stoppage.Apart from technical support, JUKI has been providing other supports to improve sewing quality and pro-ductivity for more than 50 years, inc lud ing process analyses by scientific methods and a seminar on stitching steeped in specialized knowledge.

Specialized JUKI staff with multifaceted knowledge in technology and st i tching help customers in the sewing business gain perfect man-agement control over their machines.

We have used JUKI sewing machines at most of our factories for

many years as a producer of world-famous sportswear. We trust

in JUKI quality, as well as JUKI’s ability and commitment to

respond to the various requests of our customers.

Our customer requests generally focus on three points: quality,

cost, and delivery time. Their requests are often demanding and

change from day to day. JUKI gives us the edge we need to re-

spond to tight requests and technical challenges for our sewing

machines. Now that JUKI accepts proposals in production tech-

nology for the introduction of new technologies and production

automation for the productivity improvements in demand, JUKI

offers us advantages other companies lack. On a personal level,

we rely on JUKI staff to introduce better methods and encourage

us to use them.

We share a common spirit and grow together with JUKI as our

trusted partner in business.

in our quest for OBQ (Out-of Box Quality) as a proud producer of

a leading world brand.

Our Vision: We want to be the best furniture company.

Our Mission: improve quality, reduce cost, do more business,

Worldwide sales and support

JUKI sends a web questionnaire to and invites evaluations from purchas-ers of its products to survey “what customers require in their sewing machines.” Our rst steps toward pro-viding performance, function, and quality are to devise product plans and design ideal sewing environ-ments.

Many of JUKI’s machines are pro-duced at “SHANGHAI JUKI SEWING MACHINE CO., LTD.” and a partner company. Local staff and Japanese staff work together to maintain and enhance “JUKI qual i ty” through high-level manufacturing and thor-ough inspections.

We exhaustively study mechanisms to improve stitch quality for “stable seams” of any kind of fabrics using any kind of threads. We also pursue usability in the layout and design of parts handled by hand, superior out-ward appearance, and new designs to satisfy beginners to semiprofes-sionals.

JUKI offers “peace of mind” to customers and distributors by holding various workshops on presser foot operation and methods for making products, using and maintaining cus-tomer’s sewing machine.

creator from Manhattan, won the Best of Show award at modern

quilting’s first QuiltCon in 2013. Victoria is famous for her prolific

output, TV appearances, and enthusiastic quest to popularize

quilting in a quilting classroom accoutered with JUKI sewing

machines. She chose JUKI machines largely for their beautiful

stitches (straight stitches). Stitching is integral to quilting design.

Victoria stands by the TL-2010Q, a professional machine she

uses exclusively for seams with beautiful straight lines (industrial

quality stitches). Sensitive haptic response in operation is avail-

able. Victoria adores working with the TL-2010Q. She appreciates

being able to switch to free motion mode with a single lever by

hand. She also likes the wide stitch space (23 cm at maximum)

enabling the easy handling of large workpieces.

JUKI machines also help her embody design ideas and work

them into real-life garments, a process she finds magic. “JUKI,”

she says, “is my trustworthy partner.”

Quilting is all about the stitching. Beautiful seams are JUKI’s biggest appeal.

The value standards for the PWBs used for products differ with the purpose of use. Our customers re-quest PWBs of various types. Some customers need PWBs for smart phones incorporating the latest technologies to achieve added value from high performance and miniaturization. Others need PWBs for automobiles with a strict em-phasis on safety. The product plan-ners at JUKI grasp the needs of the market based on their rich experi-ence in visiting the manufacturing premises of customers. They work together with local staff overseas to investigate on-site needs. JUKI’s proposal-based, hands-on policy is a keystone of the total solutions JUKI proposes.

JUKI has split its research and development units into separate bases working under the head office in Tama city in Tokyo, the business ofce in Akita Prefecture and others. Each base specializes exclusively on advanced research, mounters, printing machines, and inspec-tion machines respectively. JUKI has achieved an advanced and professional development sys-tem linked within a development

network connecting these bases. JUKI ’s takes pride in its brand and commitment to productivity improvement grounded in profes-sional technologies and the ex-pectation of each research base. Researchers from in and outside of the group have cooperatively responded to the complicated market for electronic PWBs in ev-ery development phase conduct-ed under the JUKI name.

Three specialist companies work together in Akita Prefecture to ship machines to the world while researching flex ible methods for construction development and improvement. Outstanding j ig adjustment devices at the hardware level and consummate worker skills at the human level are crucial. The various materials and parts we collect are required to embed actuators in numbers ranging from ten to more than

hundred per product. JUKI ad-heres to a r igorous technical training and qualication system while conducting various “ im-provement” activities to upgrade its statistical methods and mini-mize uctuation within standards. We prepare various inspection methods and inspection systems using three-dimensional measur-ing machines and other equip-ment to produce products with zero tolerance for compromise.

JUKI operates about 20 sales and service bases for electronic assem-bly systems around the world. Our sales and service bases are run by professional salespeople who know everything about JUKI’s wide prod-uct lineups. Each day they propose optimal JUKI products for customer manufacturing lines along with line solutions to maximize every cus-tomer's manufacturing potential. Fine-tuned responses tailored to customer needs are provided all over the world.

Movement con t ro l down to 1/1,000th of a second is required for the high-speed placement of electronic components on an electronic PWB. We use a high-speed camera to confirm the timing and behavior of the pick-and-placement process.

We enter a program using a test PWB, confirm the operations of the operating panel and place-ment head, and measure the accuracy of component place-ment one by one. This is one of the important determinants of the quality of the nal product.

For this test we apply high tem-perature and voltage loads to preempt initial failures. We repeat the test in many different envi-ronments to ensure a product of stable quality.

JUKI’s machines fabricate PWBs within an accuracy range of ±50microns. Mounter par ts and assemblies are also configured with accuracy at the micron lev-el. High-level production promis-es the production of high-quality PWBs.

Apart from line production, we also use a digital cell production system. High quality is main-tained by a manufacturing sys-tem backed by a continuously upgraded standardization man-ual and manufacturing know-how in digital form.

The starting point of manufac-turing is the “person” at work. We continue to maintain or improve the quality, cost, and delivery by promoting technical qualifica-tions and certifications through quality management education and internal tests.

Support

JUKI support starts with the proposal of placement tests on PWBs before the purchase of a product. Next comes the JUKI seminar for the cus-tomers. Then comes maintenance and inspections, including periodic maintenance and the replacement of parts. Support begins before the purchase and continues after the purchase. When trouble occurs on a customer's manufacturing line, we perform the recovery work quickly with a target response time of no more than 24 hours, any day of the year. This is enabled by an internal tech-nology-recognit ion system com-posed of five stages. We promise higher-level support by honing our techniques both in classroom train-ing and hands-on work in the eld.

JUKI

Our company takes part in the manufacture of electronics prod-

ucts for Sony such as televisions, cameras, and mobile-related

components for smart phones. We must pay extraordinary at-

tention to quality and eliminate every risk of compromise at our

manufacturing sites to live up to the high expectations of the

Sony brand.

We started our relationship with JUKI in the second half of the

1990’s. We are attracted to JUKI both for its “flexibility” and readi-

ness to provide the mounter data we need for building new pro-

duction systems.

JUKI’s “customer-first” perspective from the eye level guarantees

that JUKI will quickly understand our expectations and achieve

them as a partner we can trust. The world of electronics is ex-

pected to continue evolving faster than ever before. We have

high hopes in the solutions proposed by the visionary engineers

and technologists working at JUKI. Their flexibility will breathe new

life into our manufacturing sites.

Our company manufactures communication-related PWBs as a

main business. We have used JUKI mounters habitually since our

establishment in 1995. The chief advantages of JUKI products are

their high stability and easy operability. Our company started as

a small-scale PWB assembly factory. JUKI products have helped

us grow into a company with four factories and about 8,600 em-

ployees. We could never have done this without JUKI.

Smart phones, tablets, and other devices like them are booming.

The technological levels customers demand in manufacturing

are advancing as the boom continues. Our company has to

evolve competitively from the viewpoints of quality, delivery times,

and cost. And we have to do so without sacrificing the high sat-

isfaction we give our customers. Advanced equipment, experts,

and quality management are all crucial. JUKI’s support will be

key for the future growth of our company. We walk with JUKI. We

believe that JUKI promises us further growth.

Breathe new life into your manufacturing site with JUKI’s proposal capabilities.

JUKI walks by our side and promises growth.

We emphasize staff education to deal with the manufacture of various PWBs and high-accuracy, high-density surface mounting for devices like smart phones. Our people are trained to respond sincerely to the diverse needs of customers with acute quality-consciousness in the field and a commitment to “eradicating defective products.”

Our people in the field are improving their knowledge, experience, and technological know-how as machine operators every day. Strong quality expectations in the field leads to manufacturing that “impress-es” anyone who sees it. Our people know all of the peculiarities and quirks of their machines and manage them masterfully for the pro-duction of high-quality PWBs.

We test and verify compo-nent placement using the customer’s PWBs and com-ponents. We propose simula-tions in our customer’s manu-facturing environments such as simulated placement tests and reviews of placement accuracy and tact times for odd-shaped components.

We prepare various training such as a course for begin-ner ’s in SMT, a course for people inexperienced with JUKI machines, a vision-rec-ognit ion component-cre-a t ion course , and o the r courses to help customers realize the "mounting" quality they seek.

To ensure a customer can use a product routinely for as many years as possible, we study the state of the product after years of use and carry out maintenance care to return it to an optimal state. This maintenance care helps us maintain placement accuracy and assure long-time product use.

Curved surfaces in three dimen-sions are difficult to form in the machining process. Now, with lost-wax and MIM processes, curved surfaces can be formed by monoblock cast ing. Wi th these production systems, the cost of products can be reduced in comparison with. In addition to standard irons, steels and non-ferrous metals, we use tita-nium alloys, heat-resisting alloys, and cobalt alloy with vacuum casting equipment. About 80 dif-ferent materials can be used in total.

The Sleep Buster is a device developed to reduce trafc accidents by preventing overwork driving. A sensor pad attached to the driver’s seat monitors physiological signals in driver’s upper body second by second. Built-in algorithms assess the degree of driver fatigue and issue warning displays or sounds whenever the driver’s concentration or physical condition decreases or suddenly chang-es (e.g., when the driver drifts toward sleep). The driver’s stress, con-centration, arousal, and fatigue can all be analyzed in more detail by downloading the sensor data to a personal computer using JU-KI’s exclusive software.

A data entry system is a system for rapidly inputting large volumes of alphanumeric data.Insurance companies, banks, and other organizations that process great deals of information are members of the information process-ing industry. JUKI is now developing equipment to enhance process-ing capabilities and reduce human error for these organizations. Foremost among their needs are the “protection of condential and personal information,” “more efficient image entry with help from OCR processing,” and “deliveryless system using high-speed com-munications infrastructure.”

JUKI's technology

JUKI’s dry technology keeps the needle bar drier by minimizing or sealing the lubricant which is essential for high speed running. The technology is also applied in JUKI’s pro-cess to optimize the conditions for sewing machine operation using the original DLC coating, a super hard coating to protect against exterior damage on the needle bar, along with a small amount of “JUKI Grease,” a semisolid oil to reduce wear.

This technology maintains optimal tension for the needle thread and bobbin thread to achieve beautiful stable sewing. It also opens and closes the thread tension disc by finely controlling a special solenoid with an electric current and achieves the best thread tension for balanced stitches. Sole-noid control is useful in other ways for pre-venting sewing trouble, controlling pattern sewing, and controlling changes of thick, thin, and elastic fabrics.

The h igh - reso lu t ion recogn i t ion un i t equipped on the head identifies the po-sition and angle by shining light on com-ponents and reading the shadow. A wide range of components can be stably recog-nized with high accuracy. This technology also monitors the pick state of components just before placement to prevent the poor placement of extremely small, hard-to-de-tect components.

This technology ties knots at the finish of sewing. Many JUKI products apply similar mechanisms for tying knots. The covering stitch machine pulls the needle threads aslant with dedicated hooks, forms loops, and finally forms pseudo knots by dropping the needles into the loops. The needle stop position and waiting position of the ded-icated hooks are adjusted to control the timing.

This technology records images of compo-nents with a custom-designed camera and various lighting systems to confirm compo-nent positioning. Components of all types are recognized, from IC components to odd-shaped components. This technology also continuously records images of picked components for image recognition at high speed. Components are detected by a “reflectance recognition” mechanism and “transmittance recognition” in combination.

This technology stabilizes the feeding of fabrics by putting the fabrics into close contact with a feed dog. It has wide ca-pacity to smoothly feed thin or thick mate-rials as well as highly uneven multi-layered sections. This technology also achieves a “square” box-like orbit by adopting a unique cam shape and makes extreme movements to feed in the fabrics horizontal-ly and drop them in straight.

This technology prevents thread from tan-gling into bird’s nests at the start of sewing and then cuts the leftover thread to as short a length as possible at the end of sewing.A thread nipper device captures the nee-dle thread at the start of sewing and holds it until the sewing is complete. A blade cuts the needle thread short at the start of sew-ing and cuts both the needle thread and bobbin thread at the finish of sewing.

The planet head is a rotary type head designed to pick and place components with a rotating motion based on original JUKI technology. This head can pick, place, and position components simultaneously and place small-size components at a high speed. It can rotate 16 nozzles via whole-head rotation.

Th is thread- feeding technology feeds threads from about 1 cm of thread ends in through-holes to the looper holes through the inside of thin pipes. Air ejected from an electric pump through a 0.3-mm-deep slit generates suction power via the sudden widening of the slit to output the threads. The pipes are specially processed to elimi-nate the frictional resistance of the threads.

This technology promises the sewing of per-fect stitches in spite of the X-Y direction of sewing. This technology also synchronizes control of the needle thread position and controls the shape and tightness of the stitches by turning the needle bar and con-trolling the bobbin thread position using a thread handler mechanism with a superior axis and X-Y axis to eliminate hitch stitches. The result is beautiful seams.

This function eradicates component mis-placement before errors can occur by checking the electrical characteristics of the placed components (resistance value, condenser capacity, and component po-larity) before the start of production and whenever production resumes after compo-nents run out and are replaced. It can also check features invisible to a conventional appearance tester and prevent the errone-ous attachment of component reels.

This technology optimizes power consump-tion via a JUKI tuning technology using the features of various motors. Maximum performance is obtained without waste. The power supply circuit instantly shuts off when work stops and instantly turns on when work resumes. Many energy-saving technol-ogies are applied.

“Eco-product” recognition system

Our products stay eco-friendly throughout the whole life cycle, from the earliest design stages to manufacturing, transportation, use, recycling, and disposal. JUKI performs an in-house assessment of 38 environmental criteria and recognizes products that clear its “JUKI ECO PRODUCTS” standard.

Main assessment items

We are working to provide valuable products and services that are kind to people and the environment through our value chain.

The JUKI Group places value on the natural environment and works hard to ensure effective use of resources, recy-cling and energy conservation. We seek to provide products that are safe, have minimal environmental burden and contribute to the industrial advancement of the region.By doing so, we aim to continue to be a company that is broadly trusted by society and that is of value to society on the whole.

We, consistently consider-ing what is “easier to use,” “more efcient” and “more environmentally friendly” for customers, develop and design products that are kind to people and the environment, such as low power consumption, low noise, low vibration and reduction of generation of heat.

The JUKI Group conducts green procurement that also draws on the capa-bi l i t ies of our suppliers. We gather information on harmful chemical sub-stances in the supply chain from suppliers and make sure that we conduct suit-able green purchasing based on the JUKI Group Green Procurement Activity Guideline.

JUKI products use valuable resources in their parts and materials and are made us-ing a large amount of en-ergy and resources at our manufacturing bases. Each factory in the JUKI Group is working to increase pro-duction efficiency, reduce costs and conduct the 5Ss on a daily basis. Going forward, we will strive to re-duce carbon dioxide emis-sions and waste.

With regard to the distribu-tion of JUKI products, we implement advanced initia-tives that always consider the best method with the least environmental bur-den. We are contributing to a reduction in carbon diox-ide by promoting a modal shift to rail transportation and collaborating in logis-tics with other companies that transcend business category.

In order to keep our prod-ucts usable safely for a long period, we have es-tablished a service and maintenance system that responds to customer inqui-ries and demands in a de-tailed manner. We continue working to build good rela-tionships with customers by identifying the issues they face together with them and proposing solutions.
