The Queen is dead. After a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends to the throne. His future is full of power and promise. But how to rule? Mike Bartlett’s King Charles III, a “future history play”, explores the people beneath the crown as King Charles refuses to sign a controversial bill into law and political chaos and a constitutional crisis ensues. You are about to enjoy a glimpse into the near future of the monarchy.

We are so excited to bring you this production of King Charles III – the first time it is being produced in San Diego. When director Tyler Richards Hewes presented to our board, we jumped on it quickly and set about securing the rights. We were told “no” many times; but our persistence won out.

Our next mainstage production will be Next to Normal, directed by Chad Oakley, our lighting director for this and many of our pervious shows. Next to Normal won Outstanding Score and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010. Hot on the heels of Next to Normal, you won’t want to miss The Songs of Burt Bacharach. For three performances only, you will enjoy many of the great songs spanning his career. There may even be a sing-a-long or two. Please join us for this Playhouse fundraiser, with a raffle and fun treats in our bar: come support, sing, and enjoy.

Thank you all for attending and supporting Coronado Playhouse, the community’s theatre.

Cheers, Coronado Playhouse Board of Directors

When I first heard about King Charles III, I was intrigued but unsure of what to expect; a play that imagines Charles and his family grappling with the death of Queen Elizabeth II, written in the style of a Shakespearian history play (five-act structure with blank verse)...how is that going to work? I ordered the script and devoured it the moment it arrived; it was unlike any play I had ever read. It reminded me of Shakespeare’s works and themes, but stood firmly on its own two feet as a contemporary play, telling a story that resonates in our very modern society. A script that asks big questions about the nature of democracy, the roles of government and governed, and the changing nature of how we engage with our leaders, risks being sterile and bloodless. The dynamic element of this script is that those “big questions” are asked within context of the royal family. The heady concepts are wrapped in the drama and passions of the royals: William and “Waity Katie”, Harry and a commoner girl, and

the never-ending love triangle saga of Charles, Diana, and Camilla. This story lets us slip behind the curtain of royal artifice to see the beating, blood-filled hearts of its characters yearning for power, love, freedom, relevance, or simply survival. Thank you for joining us for the San Diego premiere of Mike Bartlett’s King Charles III. It is our honor to bring this story to life for you and we hope you enjoy the journey. With gratitude, Tyler Richards Hewes
