From The Lead Pastor

The Scripture declares in Matthew 22:14, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” At Cor-nerstone, we believe that God has called us to defeat three enemies. These three things have plagued our region and state for way too long. These enemies are racism, poverty and reli-gion. These things have crept into the church and have kept God’s people in bondage long enough.

Racism: Why is it that 11a.m. on Sundays is still the most segregated hour of the week? The Scripture says in John 8:36 that, “whom the Son has set free is free indeed!” When you go to church this Sunday take a look around, if everyone looks like you, you might want to ask yourself “Are we really free?”

Poverty: There is not one scripture that teaches that God gets any pleasure out of His people being broke, busted and disgusted. But the Word does declare in Psalms 35:27 that He “takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” 3 John 2 says “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” Poverty is a curse and God doesn’t want His people living under any curse. Bishop TD Jakes says “You’ve got to find where God is moving and move with Him!” Friend, God is doing great things in His people at Cornerstone and our door is always open to you and your family.

Religion: I often say “Religion is not the answer, it’s the problem! Jesus is the answer.” John Maxwell says “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always gotten.” They tell me that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Some churches are still sitting on old, hard pews, sing-ing two hundred year old songs with statues at the podium called preachers! Every week they meet and wonder why nobody comes. The only thing that is constant at Cornerstone is change. Isaiah 43:19 states that God is doing a new thing!

Just as I preached a few weeks ago on a Wednesday evening, we must contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints. But, at the same time, we must be relevant enough to reach our children, grandchildren and this present generation with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, our message doesn’t change but our methods must!

Do you remember when you were younger and in school? (Ladies, I know it seems as though it was just a couple of years ago…haha!) Back then, I just couldn’t wait for recess or gym class. I would look at the clock, counting down the minutes. It was down to five, four, by three minutes. I would tune my surroundings out and the teacher’s voice became the background as though I was listening to some soft mu-sic. By the time, the clock would be down to one minute, I would be at the edge of my seat. Rrrrrring…finally! I would scurry as fast as my little legs would take me until I heard the words “Now walk children.” I was on a mission; I was focused. I had but one thing to get to. No, it wasn’t the merry-go-round; it was the balance beam. I didn’t know why it was that I loved the balance beam until just the other day when I was asked a question.

My first reason was the sense of freedom I found there. Once outside, I would climb up on it; there was never a line I didn’t understand. I would position my feet, my arms went out, and my head turned up, and before I would take my first step. There always seemed to be a gentle breeze that would start to blow. Ahhh, freedom!

Second, I would automatically be taller. I guess it just gave me a sense of stature that I didn’t have with my feet on the ground. Third, it brought a sense of accomplishment. On the beam, I was balancing myself at a certain height, overcom-ing fear, and enjoying the moment. The ques-tion I was asked was “how do you balance ev-erything?” Well, here it is ladies… just so you know, some days I do better than others.

First, I get up every morning and say these words, “Father, what are we going to do today?” This gives Him permission and puts Him in charge of my day. Secondly, I look at my re-sponsibilities for the day and divide them into categories such as work, wife, mother, etc. (not necessary in this order). Then, I choose one task from each category and work to accomplish that task. Once you’ve done this, you will automati-cally feel accomplished and make an impact on each category of your life. Thirdly, at the end of the day before I go to sleep, I say “Thank you Father for leading my day!” Never forget to say good morning and goodnight to the Father!

It started like any other Sunday…here she comes. I must be honest, I wanted to run the other way. I knew that this sister was going to have the same confession as she had every other Sunday. When asked how she was doing, every time she came up with the same old confession, “Pastor, I just feel like throwing in the towel!” Surely, there must be one day when she could have a different testimony! However, this Sunday I was ready for her. I didn’t ask her how she was doing; instead I asked her, “What’s happening in you?” You see, there is a difference in what happens to you and what happens in you. You may not be able to change what happens to you, but you can change how what happens to you affects what happens in you. You may be confused and say, “Pastor Tony, what’s the differ-ence?” The difference is what you say about what happens to you.

In Psalms 27:13, David looks at what has happened to him and decides that he is not going to faint or lose heart. He couldn’t stop the people from trying to kill him or change his dysfunctional family and all that entailed. Neither could he stop all the wrong that he had done in the past, but his confession led him not to give up. So in the face of his enemies, he made this powerful confession. “I would have lost heart, unless I believe to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

This summer you may look at your situation and say that there is no way I can have a good life. You can say to yourself, “I’m single, no partner, nobody to spend my days and nights with,” or you can say what the Apostle said in Philippines 4:10-13. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I

have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

So what is your confession? Here’s the confes-sion that we make over you daily. You are the head and not the tail. You are above and not beneath. Everything that you desire to have, a godly and great life, is already in you and God is bringing you to a good land. There is no weapon that’s formed against you that will prosper. You are not waiting for success, it is waiting for you.

The Definition of a PastorBy Pastor Tina Godair

The definition of a pastor is written as “a minister having spiritual charge over a congregation.” I can’t help but think of how much injustice there is in that definition. Pastors are so much more than what is listed in a dictionary. Here is what comes to mind when I begin to think of my definition of my pastors. They are the ones who are there for you in challenging times of your life. They are the ones that inspire you and your family to go to a higher destination. They share the characteristics of a father and mother; what a great combination. The father side being one who can guide you and the one who can put a bite into his words if need be (to be stern). Then, they also have a mother’s heart; one that wants to protect and has the desire to see you be successful in life. Of course, there is the also the love she displays that is unconditional and that only comes from a mother’s heart. They take you under their wing and mentor you until they feel like you are strong enough to fly…solo.

I want to give honor to my pastors from Toledo, OH, Jonathan and Sher-ry Perry. These few words cannot express my love and thankfulness to the both of you. I would not have made it without you! Thank you for loaning me a word - tenacity. The song, “Because You Loved Me” really says so much. You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak You were my eyes when I couldn’t see You saw the best there was in me Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach You gave me faith ‘cuz you believed I’m everything I am, because you loved me

I thank you for the love, the hours, the spiritual guidance, for believing in me, and of course; your friendship, which I will treasure for ever. I love you both very much!

What Are You Doing This Summer? Hey, Kids! Summer is here and once again the long days of school are over and the fun of summer has begun. For a few months, there will be no more home-

work or the sound of the school bell. We will all trade in winter coats and scarves for flip flops and sunglasses. The Planet Kidz staff at Cornerstone Church wants you to have a safe and fun summer full of ice cream!

By now, you have probably learned about some of the things that you will be doing this summer and we want to hear about them! For example, I am going to Disney World in June and can not wait to see Mickey Mouse and all of his friends. But, what are you doing? Where are you going? What new things are you going to see? Don’t forget

to share them with us!

As you are on your family vacations or visiting your relatives in another state, send us a postcard or email us a picture of the place that you are visiting. We will find a place in the Planet Kidz Lobby to place all of your postcards and pictures from your summer fun for everyone else to see.

If you are just hanging out around your neighborhood this summer, join us for our Movie Nights and our Summer Party that we will be having again at our

Lead Pastors’ house along with some other great events that you will not want to miss!

Summer Vacation & Money! Hey Parents! Summertime is almost here and there are many students who are already making plans on how they are going to spend their summer vacation;

nothing wrong with that! It’s an awesome time to create great memories; memories that will shape the rest of their lives.

But, after they have taken time to enjoy the pool, the skat-ing rink, the park, all the games they can play, and all the vacation they can handle; ask them to think about making some money for next year! Yeah, you can motivate them to take some time to make money! The cool thing about making money is that it’s very easy.

Here are a few money making ideas: first, they can mow your neighbor’s lawn. All they need to do is to ask you (the parents) to let them borrow the lawn mower, and “bingo” they have a money making machine! They could probably make a good $400 over the summer! Believe me, they can think of a lot of things to do with $400. Another thing they can do is offer to wash your neighbor’s vehicle on a weekly basis; doing this could possibly earn them up to $250.00 during the summer. Also, how about babysitting? Cleaning houses? Dog walk-ing/sitting? The point is, get up and make money!!! Need more ideas? How about cleaning out your neighbor’s garage, attic or shed? That could be good for a quick $30-$50 in just a day’s time! Are these suggestions not their cup of tea? Motivate them into finding a job at Wal-Mart, JC Penney, the bowling alley, etc.

The point is: money will give them some options! How about going into the New Year with a brand new laptop, a new Ipad, Iphone or Droid? How about that pair of Nike’s that you (the parent) can’t afford or don’t want to pay for be-cause they are “just a pair of shoes?” And yeah, by the way, it will teach them some extra skills they might not already have! So motivate your teens to make some extra money this summer, it will benefit the entire family.

Effective Preschool EducationEffective preschool education can assist in making all children ready to learn the day they start school and, more importantly, help close the enormous gap

facing children in poverty. Preschool allows our kids to start off with the strong foundation they need to be suc-cessful in school and in life. Preschool education can perform miracles. According to a number of studies, children who attend pre-kindergar-ten programs have bigger vocabularies, know more let-ters and letter-sound associations, are more familiar with words and book concepts, and exhibit increased math skills.

Nationwide, almost two-thirds (64 percent) of children attend a preschool cen-ter in the year prior to kindergarten, typically at age four. On any given day, more than five million American youngsters attend some type of pre-kinder-garten program. A preschool day is not just advanced babysitting for busy par-ents; kids also practice many key components of the school day, including the importance of routines. Routines are vital for early learners. “They understand carpet time, clean-up procedures, how to share crayons, or even getting their pants on and off without the teacher’s help; that’s big,” says Steve Malton, kin-dergarten and first-grade teacher at Parkmead Elementary School, in Walnut Creek, California. “Little kids have only a certain amount of what’s called active working memory. If a large portion of their brain is figuring out what they’re going to do next, there’s less room there to spend on learning.” Result: Preschool

has a huge impact on their ability to keep up in class. Furthermore, key re-search findings indicate that those who go through prekindergarten programs are more likely to graduate from high school and make higher wages as adults.

you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies”

How valuable is your health? What is the going rate for one’s wellbeing? Sometimes we just have to ask ourselves, “Have we inadvertently put a price on our health by not taking care of the body God has so graciously allowed us to use?” We have a wealth of knowledge but a lack of self-control and discipline seem to be our constant weapons of defeat. However, losing the battle does not mean that you

have lost the war! My goal is to share quarterly encouragements and hope that we can become and continue to be, “Fit for the King.” If we truly do what we can, I believe that God will do what we cannot. Today is a new day; let us pre-pare to be healthy, happy and fit. We can take this journey together, conquering a lack of self control and enjoy victories one battle at a time!!!

LIFESTYLE CHANGE TIP:Instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring por-tion sizes, think of choosing fruits, veggies and lean meats as your new food choices. If you must, have dessert once a week. It’s ok, we are taking baby steps. Gradually, you will see and feel the difference of making these small changes.

Give yourself new challenges each week. For example, if you like bread, choose whole wheat options instead of white. Or if you have bread with every meal, try cutting back and only having it a few times a week. The results will amaze you! Diets simply do not work; however, lifestyle changes do. Last, but cer-tainly not least, hit the ground running. Exercise is for “EVERYBODY!” Find what works for you then do it a minimum of three days per week. No matter what, be consistent! Fewer times a week consistently is much better than ev-eryday once in a while.
