Prima is a German course for young people aged 12 to 16 which leads to the ‘Zertifikat Deutsch’ qualification in five volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 (which have already been published) lead to CEF level A1, volumes 3 and 4 (to be published in Summer 2008 and January 2009 respec-tively) lead to level A2 and the fifth volume (to be published at the beginning of 2010) leads to level B1.In addition Prima closely follows the requirements of the Goethe Institut’s ‘Fit in Deutsch’ exam-ination, which is specifically de-signed for young people. Prima thus prepares young people ap-propriately by providing typical exercise types which come up in this examination.

Each book can be completed in 60 - 70 lessons (periods of 45 minutes) and additionally pro-vides a wealth of optional practice material to consolidate and ex-tend young people’s knowledge and skills. Prima is particularly

suitable for those learning Ger-man as a second foreign language (e.g. after English).

Each of the coursebooks contains seven units, a ‘short break’ and a ‘long break’ as well as an appen-dix.

Each unit consists of eight pages. The first lavishly-illustrated pageintroduces the main topic of the unit. This is followed by six pages of varied texts, dialogues and activities. Clearly-structured learning sequences systematical-ly develop pronunciation and the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Learners regularly write texts in the first person in accordance with the European Language Portfolio. Up-to-date cultural information about German-speaking coun-tries is highlighted in green boxes entitled ‘Land und Leute’ (the country and its people), where-as the orange boxes ‘Denk nach’ highlight language structures. The last page of each unit ‘Das

kannst du’ (You can . . .) provides a summary of the material covered.

The workbooks with integrated learner’s audio-CD for listening practice support the coursebooks. The coursebooks and workbooks are structured in such a way that you can find exactly the same ex-ercise number for the same task in both books.

The test booklet Prima A1 with audio-CD for volumes 1 and 2 (to be published in Summer 2008) contains a final test for each unit, comprehensive tests

covering more than one unit as well as a mock exam for ‘Fit in Deutsch 1’. The tests provide students with the means of assess-ing learning progress through a variety of exercises for listening and reading comprehension, wri-ting, vocabulary and grammar.

Additional materials for working with Prima as well as teaching tips and useful links are available on our website www.cornelsen.de . In addition to the monolingual German version, Prima is also available in Czech and Lithuanian editions.

In recent years video has become one of the most talked-about mediums in language teaching. With the replacement of videotapes by DVDs, the technology has become broadly avail-able and easy to handle. Whether on TV, on the computer screen or on portable players, DVDs can be used everywhere.

The advantages of this new medium over books or

traditional audio materials are self-evident. The learners don’t

just read or listen – they watch moving pictures, observing

body language and non-verbal communication

and learning with all their senses. In the

new Cornelsen Lextra series,

language is presented in real-life contexts, with real

people in everyday communi-cative situations. Motivation is ensured by strong storylines that keep students interested and help them to remember language in the right context.

If those weren’t arguments enough in favour of video, Lextra has taken the advantages of moving pictures one step further by incorporating the revolutionary new technology of interactive video DVD. At the flick of a remote control, learners can now check their comprehension, accuracy and language skills while watching the DVD by answering on-screen questions and performing language tasks.

The Lextra general language series – The Phantom Cat series – featuring English, Spanish, French and Italian offers a highly entertaining introduction to the target language. Complete with a 128-page book, these courses assume no prior knowledge of the language. With the help of a pair of distinguished detectives, the learner tracks down an unusual criminal, at the same time covering the most important phrases and

vocabulary to get by on A1 level. Never has language learning been more entertaining.

The book provides solid practice on basic vocabulary and gram-mar points and contains a wealth of additional exercises, as well as intercultural training and useful visitors’ information for each of the target countries.

The Lextra Business English series takes a more serious but no less effective approach. Each of the five DVDs in this series focuses on a particular skill that business people need when communi-cating in an international con-text. Whether it is for holding meetings, during negotiations, when giving presentations, chatting with business partners over a meal or in email and telephone communication, these DVDs offer efficient professio-nal guidance in intercultural behaviour and language acqui-sition, and the convenient medium means language practice is available anytime, anywhere – an important plus for the busy professional.

storyline, the learner encounters not only native speakers of English but also real-life situa-tions where English is used as a lingua franca. Clearly structured in five chapters each, the DVDs come with a 72-page booklet providing additional informa-tion on grammar and vocabulary as well as writing practice. They are aimed at business people and managers at B1 to B2 level. With plenty of skills practice, they are useful both for preparing for specific business situations and for generally improving the learners’ business English.

Each of the Lextra series offers learners the additional options of subtitles in the target language or their native language, making them equally ideal for self-study or for use in the classroom. All of the DVDs feature a tutor who guides the user through the interactive exercises and gives feedback on activities.

Developed by a team of inter-national writers, directors, pro-ducers and educators, the Lextra general language and the Business English interactive DVD series set new standards in language learning.

Good foreign language skills are essential for employees and lead-ers in internationally operating companies. An EU study pub-lished in 2006 confirmed that many European companies lose out on international business be-cause employees don’t have the necessary language skills and intercultural competence.

“Far from being an unwelcome cost to doing business”, Euro-pean Commissioner for Multi-lingualism, Leonard Orban, said, “investing in language skills can dramatically improve a com-pany’s business opportunities.” (Press release, Brussels, 23 Janu-ary 2007)

In order to achieve rapid and measurable success for the com-pany, the language learning goals need to be tailored to the needs of each particular enterprise and the learner’s field of work. Train-ing budgets are limited and em- ployees’ time is money. These re-sources should be used as efficient-ly as possible and should achieve measurable results. Standard text-books and courses can fulfil these goals only to a limited extent.

Therefore, in 2006, Cornelsen Publishing increased its activity

in the field of adult education specifically to include this par-ticular area. The Cornelsen Cor-porate Solutions group is charged with developing tailor-made lan-guage learning products for com-panies and training institutes as well as adult education institutes with company clients.

Cornelsen Corporate Solutions’ aim is to produce optimized learning materials for a wide variety of learning goals and course forms, based on detailed prior needs analysis and detailed consult-ancy/advisory meetings with the client. The basis for this is pro- vided by the existing editorial con-tents of the Cornelsen Publishing house. The range of products available is thus very wide and varied and covers the spectrum from classic course books with a new cover design specific to the client through to completely new learning material concepts for specialist language needs. As an example, Cornelsen Corporate Solutions has produced Maritime English for Technical Officers, a course book plus specialist lan-guage cards for technical officers specifically developed for the Port of Hamburg training centre. In addition, the group produces not only traditional course ma-

terial but also complete blended learning courses which include classroom contact periods with a trainer.

The development of online courses is another particularly successful field for Cornelsen Cor-porate Solutions. These provide clients with extremely flexible and individual learning packages. Online courses covering English for Telephoning, English for Emails, English for Meetings and English for Presentations have been produced based on Cornelsen’s Short Course series. The online courses Business English B2 and Grammar – no pro-blem complete the programme in the area of Business English.

Online courses in German as a Foreign Language and Polish for Business Contacts provide tried-and-tested methodology and at-tractive new features.

All online courses are modular in design and can therefore be used flexibly. They can be used as pure e-learning courses or as part of blended learning courses. Cornel-sen Corporate Solutions can adapt the technical parameters and contents of these online courses to meet the specific requirements of the client.
