When Mike Schafer returned to his alma mater as the 12th head coach in Cor-nell men’s hockey history in the summer of 1995, his goal was to return the Big Red program to a position of national prominence. Having now completed 22 seasons behind the Cornell bench in 2016-17, he has clearly accomplished that objective by guiding the Big Red to the NCAA tournament 10 times, including a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002-03, the program’s first since 1980.

Schafer is Cornell Hockey’s second-longest tenured coach, while his 412-242-89 record has him as the winningest coach in Cornell men’s hockey history. He picked up his 231st career victory on Jan. 27, 2007, a 2-1 victory against Colgate at Lynah Rink, to become the program’s all-time wins leader. Schafer reached the 400-win mile-stone in 2017, a mark previously reached by only 43 coaches in all of college hockey.

Coming hand-in-hand with Cornell’s success on the national scene, the Big Red has been one of the top programs in ECAC Hockey during Schafer’s tenure. Cornell has claimed five ECAC Hockey tournament titles, the most all-time in league history, and staking a claim to three regular-season crowns. He has a career 268-148-68 re-cord in ECAC Hockey regular-season play and a 58-29-2 mark in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.

His peers have taken notice of his accomplishments, awarding him the ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year award three times during his career. He is also a three-time finalist for the Spencer T. Penrose Award, presented to the national coach of the year. He has also regularly had the Big Red ranked among the nation’s elite over the past decade, including reaching as high as third in both the USCHO.com and the USA To-day/USA Hockey polls in 2008-09 and fourth in both polls in 2012-13. Cornell has also held the top spot in the polls during the 2002-03 and 2004-05 seasons.

Schafer guided the Big Red to the ECAC Hockey tournament title in 1995-96 and 1996-97, becoming the first Cornell coach to win ECAC Hockey tournament titles in his first two seasons. His five tournament titles surpassed the legendary Ned Harkness for the most in program history. In 2002-03, he led the Big Red to the NCAA Frozen Four, setting a school record with 30 wins, going one better than the undefeated, untied 29-0-0 national championship squad of 1969-70. Cornell’s 2002-03 ECAC Hockey mark of 19-2-1 was Cornell’s best mark since the 1969-70 team went 21-0 in league play.

Schafer has a .614 career winning percentage following the 2016-17 season, which saw the Big Red return to the NCAA champi-onships with an at-large bid after Cornell advanced to the ECAC Hockey championship game. Additionally, his 412 career victories rank in the Top 10 among active Division I coaches. Most recently, the Big Red has advanced to at least the ECAC Hockey Champi-onship semifinals a league-best nine times over the last 13 seasons. The Big Red has finished the season ranked in the USCHO.com poll in seven of the last nine seasons.

During Schafer’s tenure, Cornell players have earned numerous ECAC Hockey awards, including a pair of Player of the Year hon-ors, four Ken Dryden Awards for the league’s top goaltender, four Defenseman of the Year awards, seven Defensive Forwards of the Year and four Rookies of the Year. Additionally, three players have earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors a total of four times.

Flanagan helped guide the Big Red back to the NCAA championships for the first time in five years after a couple stops fol-

lowing a four-year playing career at St. Lawrence. His most recent experience was at UMass-Lowell, where he served as the River Hawks’ director of hockey operations for the 2015-16 season. Prior to that, Flanagan was the assistant coach at Hobart from 2012-15. Working under former Cornell assistant coach Mark Taylor with the Statesmen, Flanagan helped build a team that won the ECAC West title in 2015 and 2016 to reach the NCAA tournament. Ho-bart was the No. 1 seed in the NCAA’s East Region last year.

No stranger to ECAC Hockey, Flanagan played 121 career games with St. Lawrence up to the 2010-11 season. He racked up 12 goals and 40 assists for 52 points, helping the Saints advance to the league’s championship weekend twice over his four years. He served as an assistant captain during his senior season, then went on to play professionally with the Las Vegas Wranglers and Quad City Mallards in the ECHL.

Flanagan graduated from St. Lawrence with a bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in sports studies and exercise sci-ences in 2010. He also earned a master of education degree from St. Lawrence in 2011.

Syer has completed six seasons with Cornell men’s hockey team, including five seasons as the associate head coach. Syer

joined the program in June 2011 as an assistant coach, taking over the lead role in recruiting as well as coaching the defense. He helped guide the Big Red to a 19-9-7 record and an appear-ance in the NCAA regional finals in his first season on East Hill, with the team ranking 11th in the country with a 2.26 goals-against average. After the season, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach.

In the six years Syer has been with the Big Red, the team has finished in the top 20 nationally in team defense five times — as high as seventh in 2014-15. Most recently, Syer’s deft manage-ment of the Big Red’s injury-riddled blue line helped the team rank 10th in the country in team defense last year, backstop-

pingthe team to the ECAC Hockey championship game and an at-large bid to the NCAA championships.

Syer previously served as Associate Head Coach during his 12 seasons at Quinnipiac under head coach Rand Pecknold. Dur-ing that run, the Bobcats posted a 242-168-46 record with one NCAA tournament appearance (2002) and nine 20-win seasons. Quinnipiac won the 2005 Atlantic Hockey regular season title and the 1999 MAAC regular season and 2002 MAAC tournament championship crowns during his tenure.

Quinnipiac reached the MAAC tournament semifinals in each of the first four years of Syer’s tenure, including three straight MAAC finals appearances. Included in that span were the 2002 MAAC tournament title and the first NCAA appearance in pro-gram history. The Bobcats also won the MAAC regular-season title in Syer’s first year at Quinnipiac.

Palmer has completed two seasons on the men’s hockey staff, one in his cur-rent role and one as a volunteer assistant

coach during for 2015-16 season.Palmer is the founder and primary instructor of Syracuse-based

Palmer Goalie Systems, where he provides personal instruction and video analysis to more than 30 area goaltenders who com-pete at the AAA, prep school, junior and college levels. He also serves as goaltending consultant with Mountain Hockey Instruc-tion and Syracuse Empire Junior Stars, and he serves as a talent

evaluator for USA Hockey Festival Central New York tryout camp.He was a two-time gold medalist with the United States at

the IIHF Under-18 World Championship, and was later named to the U.S. team at the Under-20 World Championship in 2008. Palmer played for two seasons in the prestigious National Team Development Program. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, then went on to start 71 games for Ohio State over three seasons. He was a three-time Big 10 All-Academic Team selection and earned CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention in 2007.
