In 2013, the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic will mark its 22nd year of existence. In the history of the Classic,

hundreds of future college athletes have suited up and the individual performances from these extraordinary athletes add an exciting aspect each year. The 2013 lineup consists of the same 10 teams as last year: Kell, Chattahoochee, Walton, Peachtree Ridge, Colquitt County, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Camden County, Brookwood and McEachern. More than 32 seniors that played in the Classic last season are suiting up for major college programs this fall. The 2012 Corky Kell Classic featured college signees Robert Nkemdiche (Ole Miss) Tyren Jones (Alabama), Parker McLeod (Alabama), Brandon Kublanow (Georgia), Anthony Price (Rice), Bryce Ramsey (Georgia), Brendan Langley (Georgia), Quin-cy Mauger (Georgia), Travis Marshall (Navy), Donnie Miles (North Carolina), DeVondre Seymour (Geor-gia), Jalen Brooks (Maryland), Alex Stoehr (Georgia State), Octavius Jackson (Florida), Bobby Hill (Ole Miss), Johnny Ward (South Florida), Shaun McGee (Georgia), Kyrin Priester (Clemson), Adam Ledford

(Harvard), Wayne Gallman (Clemson), Zach Barnes (Texas Tech), Kasey Gaines (Penn State), David Ka-mara (Ole Miss), Ryan Carter (Clemson), Jack Banda (Arizona), Jujaun Dulaney (Maryland), Ty Griffin (Ga Tech), Tony Porter (Ohio), Daniel Stephens (Middle Tennessee), J.J. Green (Georgia), Jarrad Davis (Flori-da) and J.P. Vonashek (South Carolina). That list puts the level of competition into per-spective, and also preps the stage for another talent-ed group of players. Walton is sparked by defensive back and playmaker D.J. Smith. The senior is narrow-ing down his multiple SEC and ACC offers and will be a big-play option when combined with the accurate passing of Raiders quarterback Price Wilson, who committed to Louisiana Tech in June. Peachtree Ridge features safety and ex-Geor-gia commit Nick Glass. On the offensive side of the ball, Peachtree Ridge is privileged to have some of the best skill players in the state including running back Jordan Ellis who is committed to Virginia and athlete Myron Burton who holds offers from Vander-bilt, Clemson, Georgia State and UNC-Charlotte. Or-

lando Brown anchors the offensive line for the Lions and is committed to Tennessee. Kell has defensive tackle Donnell Greene and Kennesaw State commit Taylor Henkle. The Chat-tahoochee offense will feature wide receiver Collin Lisa, who is committed to UAB. Grayson replaces 21 starters this season and will have a new lineup of talented prospects. The Rams have allowed a state-best 9.0 points per game over the last two seasons. Offensively, Grayson will have to control the line of scrimmage against Colquitt County’s Jamiyus Pittman, who is committed to Ole Miss. Packers receiver Todd Boyd and lineman Gabe Mobley are both pledged to Georgia State. North Gwinnett defensive end Dante Sawyer is ranked by many recruiting services in the top 10 in Georgia’s Class of 2014. Wideouts Caleb Scott and Nate Brown are both college bound, and run-ning back C.J. Leggett is narrowing down his college choices. Junior offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt is said to be the best player at his position in the junior class. Camden County starting cornerback Kal-varaz Bessent and safety Chris Williams are both Alabama-bound. Defensive end Anthony Johnson is committed to FIU. The Brookwood-McEachern matchup will fea-ture two talented running backs. The Broncos’ Josh Brown holds offers from Arizona, Buffalo and Fur-man, while McEachern junior running back Taj Griffin sets the pace for the Indians. McEachern defensive end Henry Famurewa is committed to Louisville and senior quarterback Ty Clemons is holding scholarship offers from Kentucky and Louisville. Chuma Edoga is a junior offensive tackle with offers from North Carolina, Florida, Au-burn, Tennessee and Georgia. As the players race out of the tunnels in the

Georgia Dome on Aug. 24, the familiar sight of col-lege coaches and recruiters on the sidelines will once again appear. Sager can be reached at [email protected].

Kell had three football coaches in its first five years as a varsity pro-gram, according to GHSFHA.org. But since 2008, the Longhorns

have employed just one: Derek Cook. The University of Georgia gradu-ate easily became Kell’s most successful head coach and currently holds a 45-14 record at the northeast Cobb County high school. Last season, Kell went undefeated in games against Class AAAAA foes until the playoffs when the Longhorns lost to eventual state cham-pion Gainesville in the second round. The 61-42 final score is a bit mis-leading, as Kell led 35-21 at the half. While the Red Elephants and star quarterback Deshaun Watson are the favorites to repeat, Kell is focused on the business at hand. “We’re aware of Gainesville,” said Cook. “We had a great game against them last year and we probably had that one in our hands and let go of it. Of course that’s a great player over there (Watson), but that’s so far down the road. ... We know they’re there, but it’s got to all line up perfectly for us to match up with them again at some point.” For now, Kell is looking forward to its game against Chattahooch-ee in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. Cook’s bunch defeated the Cou-gars last year in the event 19-8. While most high school football games generally start as the sun is setting, the Longhorns’ game against Chat-tahoochee kicks off at 9 a.m. Cook has a plan for the odd start time. “What we’ve been doing the last several Saturdays is bringing them in and practicing at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, so their bodies are not in shock and more importantly their minds,” Cook explained ear-lier in August. “On gameday, they’re going to be up at 5:30 a.m. eating breakfast, so it won’t be an issue that day either.” One issue Kell does have is replacing defensive backs Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger, each of whom also played on offense for the Longhorns. Cook is confident in their replacements. One of those is safety Taylor Henkle, a Kennesaw State commitment. “The DBs are pretty well the same other than the names on the backs of their jerseys,” said Cook. “The guys we have are not SEC-cali-ber (recruits), but they’re great high school players.” Quarterback Matt McGuigan returns to lead the Longhorns’ offense, which had a strong showing at the Georgia Invitational 7-on-7 tournament.

The Peachtree Ridge Lions are looking to be two things on the grid-iron in the fall of 2013: improved and exciting. The Lions were

a playoff team in coach Mark Fleetwood’s first season at the Su-wanee school in 2011 but last year, “The Ridge” went 4-6 in Region 7-AAAAAA. This season, the Lions are looking to return to the playoffs and maybe more.

First-year head coach Mike Owens will try to continue the winning tra-dition at Chattahoochee this fall. Owens replaces Terry Crowder who

led the Cougars to five playoff appearances, including a state champion-ship in 2010. The Cougars will start the season looking to win in their own back-yard, Region 6-AAAAAA. “Last year, Chattahoochee was just a few play away from compet-ing for a region championship,” said Owens in an exclusive interview with Score Atlanta. “There’s always a real desire to beat those neighbor-ing schools, and we got some high expectations.” The Cougars won four of their last five games in 2012 (all against region competition) to qualify for the playoffs, but in the opening round of the tournament, they fell to eventual state champion Norcross. On the offensive side of the ball, the Cougars will give defenses a lot to think about. They’ll line up with up to two running backs in the backfield with the possibility of none. In all, the offense returns five play-ers. Owens will rely on the experience of his two senior wide receiv-ers Collin Lisa and Avery Ward, who are both returning starters. Senior Chase Nelson returns for his third season as a starter at running back and will power the offense. Taz Wilson, a senior, will get the nod at quarterback, but he’s a first-year starter. Despite Wilson’s lack of starting experience, Owen likes what he sees out of him. “He’s got the potential to really have a pretty special year for us.” The defense also returns five players and will play to the strengths of linebackers Nate Sherman, a senior, and Josh Weisberg, a junior. Several players will line up on both sides of the ball for Chattahoochee, most notably senior linemen Zach Kladis and Nick Williams. Similar to the offense, the defense will use formations to confuse and frustrate their opponents. At times they’ll line up in a traditional 4-3, but can and will morph into a 3-5 and beyond. Chattahoochee faces a tough first game, playing Kell in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, both named for the legendary Cobb County coach and administrator. Luckily, as a former assistant at Brookwood, Owens is quite used to the venue. He estimates that’s been an assistant for all but four of the Kell Classics and wants to motivate his guys to play well. “It’s one of the premier events of its kind,” said Owens. “There’s probably not 10 events in the country that can compare to this one.” To get his team ready for excitement and noise, Owens’ Cougars are installing hand signals for their offense and defensive units.

Coach Mickey Conn has a good thing going at Grayson High School. He’s the only coach in the Gwinnett County school’s history and has

led the powerhouse program to a record of 110-39 over 14 seasons. The Rams haven’t lost more than three games since 2007, the same year they began their current streak of reaching at least the second round of the state playoffs. But this season may provide Conn with one of his biggest chal-lenges since he walked on campus. The 2011 team won the state championship and last season’s team was flooded with top-level col-lege prospects including the nation’s most sought after recruit, defen-sive end/fullback Robert Nkemdiche. The Rams cruised to the Region 8-AAAAAA title in 2012. While Nkemdiche will terrorize SEC quarter-backs this fall at Ole Miss, the Rams also lost 20 starters. Replacing 21 starters won’t be easy, but if any program is up to the task, it’s got to be Grayson. At one point last season, the Rams shut out four consecutive region opponents while never scoring less than 40 points in any of those four games. It’s safe to say that Conn was able to build depth through substitutions throughout the majority of the season. “We’ve got a lot of good players that have waited their turn, and I’m anxious to get them on the field,” Conn noted in a recent interview with Score Atlanta. Grayson employs what Conn describes as a hybrid Wing-T of-fense. He’ll turn the reigns of the offense over to junior quarterback Hunter Schuessler this fall. The strength of the team is expected to be the playmakers at the skill positions and athletes behind the line of scrimmage. Conn will employ a 4-3 defense that should provide plenty of power to attack opposing quarterbacks. Big things are expected from running back Aares McCall, speedster Kartez Hall and linebacker Daniel Fennell. The Rams begin their season in the Corky Kell Classic against Re-gion 1-AAAAAA power, Colquitt County. Grayson has some history in the fall showcase with a 4-1 record in their previous appearances. The Rams are 1-1 against Colquitt County but have never faced the Packers in the Corky Kell Classic. Grayson is young, but seems poised to be successful once again in 2013. As Conn noted, “It’s not where you start, but where you finish.”

One year ago, everyone knew Walton was going to supply heavy doses of running back Tyren Jones to its opponents. There is more

uncertainly surrounding the Jones-less Raiders this season, but coach Rocky Hidalgo will have talented starters and a brackish defense ca-pable of bringing Walton back to prominence. “I think the thing we are going to have to work on is building some depth along the defensive line, but I think this is going to be a very good defensive team,” said Hidalgo. However, there will be a changing of the guard on offense. “We are young on the offensive line and we are young at tailback, so it is going to take a while for that part of our team to gel,” said Hi-dalgo. “We are going to have to rely on our quarterback and our wide receivers, and I think you are going to see us throw the ball a little bit more than what most people have.” Sophomore running back Karekin Brooks will share carries with Breyon Thomas. This will allow weapons like D.J. Smith and rising soph-omore cornerback Chad Clay to step in at receiver rather than the back-field. Fullback Henry Rowling returns with the most playing experience of any returning offensive player. At tight end is junior Davis Pigeon, who will stand as a big target for senior quarterback and Louisiana Tech signee Price Wilson. Wilson was 3-1 as a starter last season. The Raiders have tremendous team speed this season, especially on defense. Linebacker Dreyon Williams was unblockable in spring practice and will likely see a breakout season. Zach Williams missed last

Kell Longhorns

WaltonRaiders

season with an ACL injury and according to Hidalgo, will be an “animal” on defense. Smith and junior Taquar Stewart will move from cornerback to safety this year. Walton will have one of the best safety nets in the state with this duo. Linebacker Imani Parker was injured in the first game of the season last year and returns as another standout. The schedule will challenge the Raiders in 2013 and Hidalgo rec-ognizes the depth of Region 5-AAAAAA. “I think the region is going to be very very tough,” said Hidalgo. The Raiders open up with Peachtree Ridge in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. The Lions were the only one of the 10 teams in this year’s Corky Kell lineup that did not reach the postseason last year.

“Winning a region championship. That’s our main goal,” declared Fleetwood. “That’s something we want to prove.” Peachtree Ridge has a strong, if not lengthy, tradition. The Lions have only been in the football business since 2003, but won a share of the state championship in 2006. In 2008, the Ridge added a runner-up finish. Last year was the first season since 2004 that the Lions did not post a winning record, so opponents can expect to face a motivated group of Lions in 2013. The strength of the team figures to lie in the skill positions. “We’ve got some guys that have the ability to break a game open,” added Fleet-wood. Peachtree Ridge has two playmakers at running back in Jordan Ellis and Walden Davis. Brandon Johnson will be a threat on the outside at wide receiver. One of the biggest challenges for Fleetwood in the offseason was replacing two key units, one on each side of the ball. On offense, only two starters return to the offensive line. And on defense, many of the top players from last year’s rotation return, but the lineback-ing corps was hit hard by graduation. Both the offense and defense will show multiple formations, and the offense will definitely be up-tempo. In victories last fall, Peachtree Ridge averaged more than 38 points per game. Fleetwood figures to mix in plenty of talented younger players. He’s excited at the prospect of seeing at least 10 very talented sopho-mores compete and earn extended playing time from the onset of the season. The most intriguing element for this team will be the addition of transfer Nick Glass from St. Pius X. Fans can expect to see Glass on spe-cial teams as well and see him on the offensive side of the ball as well. The Lions face stiff completion from the first kickoff facing Wal-ton in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. Peachtree Ridge will have revenge on their minds, as the Lions lost to the Raiders in 2011 in the Kell Classic.

When the Walton Raiders and the Peachtree Ridge Lions kick off in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, it will be a matchup of one team with

a lot of experience in the event against a team with fewer appearances. Walton, out of East Cobb, will be making their 10th appearance (all since 2002). Peachtree Ridge, from Suwanee, will be making its fourth trip to the Dome (all since 2010). Walton is 5-4 in the Kell Classic including a 26-14 victory over “The Ridge” in 2011. The Lions are 1-2 in the event. This year’s Walton team will look a lot different from last year’s squad, having lost many players to FBS programs including running back Tyren Jones and quarterback Parker McLeod to Alabama and of-fensive lineman Brandon Kublanow to Georgia. All three were injured in parts of last season, so their replacements have seen plenty of action. Senior quarterback Price Wilson went 3-1 subbing for McLeod and has had a promising offseason of 7-on-7 tournaments. Senior run-ning back D.J. Smith will step into Jones’ spot full time. Smith will also be a key player in the Raiders’ defensive backfield. The biggest area of concern for Walton (7-4 last year in Region 5-AAAAAA) will be its revamped offensive line. On defense, head coach Rocky Hidalgo likes the team’s overall speed, but would like to see a little more depth along the line. Smith will

Bright and early today, two Class AAAAA programs will get the 2013 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic started at 9 a.m.

Chattahoochee, under new head coach Mike Owens, will run a variety of formations and schemes this year on offense and defense. The Cougars will line up in the pro-style set, using both an empty back-field and up to two backs. Defensively, Owens will have his unit line up in the 4-3 as well as the 3-5. The Cougars’ defense is led by junior linebacker Josh Weisburg. Taz Wilson will quarterback the offense and look for wide receiver Col-lin Lisa to make big plays. Kell is a spread team that flourishes on slashing runs by backs and short passes that turn into big plays through the air. Defensively, the Longhorns have been consistently stout under coach Derek Cook. Quarterback Matthew McGuigan returns from a 2012 season in which Kell lost in the second round of the playoffs despite scoring 42 points on eventual state champ Gainesville. McGuigan will try to find senior wideouts Darian Harris and Julian Burris. The offensive line is led by senior Donnell Greene. Defensively, the Horns will depend on safety Taylor Henkle to help fill the shoes of Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger, who both signed with Georgia

be a ballhawking safety this fall and linebackers Dreyon Williams and Imani Parker will figure into Walton’s success. Sophomore Chad Clay will start at cornerback and free safety. He is the son of former Georgia Tech and New England star Willie Clay. Peachtree Ridge head coach Mark Fleetwood was disappointed with last year’s 4-6 record. “It was a disappointing year,” he said. “We were and are better than that, but we didn’t prove that. Now, we want to prove we’re better than that.” Senior defensive back Nick Glass is one of the biggest names on the Lions. While Glass will roam the backfield, the linebacking corps is talented, but untested. On the offensive side of the football, Peachtree Ridge will work to out-think and out-hustle opposing defenses. The offense will be fast-paced and often work without a huddle before snaps. The biggest name on offense will be senior tackle Orlando Brown, Jr., who is com-mitted to the University of Tennessee. Brown is a mountain of a man at 6-foot-8, 350 pounds and is the son of a former NFL lineman. Manning the controls on offense will be junior Chance Thrasher. Thrasher is a strong-armed pocket passer that will optimize his quick release out of the shotgun formation.

after last season. It is Kell’s fourth straight appearance in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic and the second year in a row the Horns will face Chattahoochee in the event. Last year, Kell’s defense held the Cougars to just one score in a 19-8 affair at the Dome. Kell had played Grayson the previous two years at the Classic, with each team winning one. “The Hooch” is in its fourth Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, but is still looking for its first win in the event. The 2010 Class AAAA state champions, however, have made the playoffs three straight years and have won region titles in two of the past three seasons. Cook, a Marietta native who attended Etowah, has been at Kell since 2008, and the Longhorns have gone 45-14 with five consecutive state playoff appearances in that period. Kell has been playing football for 10 seasons, including this year. Cook also coached South Cobb from 2006 to 2007 where he led the Eagles to the playoffs in his first season. Chattahoochee took the next step in its football history on March 1 when it hired former Brookwood defensive coordinator Mike Owens to replace former head coach Terry Crowder, who is now at Chatta-hoochee. Owens was head coach at Peachtree Ridge from 2003-2004 when he led the Lions in their first two varsity seasons.

It will be a matchup of metro Atlanta power against South Georgia tradition when the Grayson Rams meet the Colquitt County Pack-

ers in today’s Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. The Grayson program is only 14-years old, but already owns a state championship. Head coach Mickey Conn’s Rams defeated Colquitt County in the state semifinals 35-21 en route to the 2011 Class AAAAA title. The Packers have a state title of their own and play in what is now Region 1-AAAAAA with heavyweights like Valdosta, Lowndes and Camden County. Grayson has a record of 4-1 in this event, all since 2008. Colquitt County is 1-4 in the Classic. Last year they were defeated by North Gwinnett 16-14 in the first appearance by the Packers under head coach Rush Propst’s leadership. Grayson junior quarterback Hunter Schuessler should be familiar in the Georgia Dome even if it will be his first start. His brother Nate was Grayson’s quarterback during the Rams’ championship run. Last fall the younger Schuessler, who possesses arm strength comparable or stronger than his brother, led the JV squad to an undefeated season. Grayson is only returning one starter on both sides of the ball combined. Schuessler will run Grayson’s familiar “hybrid Wing-T” offense and will share the backfield with senior running back Aares McCall.

McCall has big play potential. He rushed for 130 yards on just 14 carries in Grayson’s scrimmage against Gainesville earlier this month. Colquitt County is famous for their offensive firepower in recent years. Fans can count on seeing plenty of the football spiraling down-field, a trademark of Propst’s offenses. Senior quarterback Daniel Mo-bley will get the keys all season after starting a handful of games last fall. How prolific is the Packers’ offense under Propst? Colquitt County averaged over 28 points per game (including the playoffs) despite play-ing against stingy 1-AAAAAA competition in 2012. There are high expectations again for the Packers’ offense, and if the line gels quickly, look out. Propst has guided his squad to at least the state semifinals the last four seasons and this squad is hungry to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Packers football. Colquitt County’s defense will look a little different than last year’s unit in a couple of ways. Tracy Buckhannon, formerly the secondary position coach, has been promoted to defensive coordinator and what tweaks and changes he’ll install are still question marks. Buckhannon will start the season minus one, possibly two, playmakers. Senior safety Tim Sanders will miss the beginning of the season recovering from a broken leg, and senior linebacker Brandon Key is coming off an MCL injury. Se-nior tackle Jamiyus Pittman will disrupt opposing offensive lines.

This matchup of Class AAAAAA titans will be a contrast of styles as the dynamic spread offense attack of North Gwinnett faces the

grind-it-out Wing-T running game of Camden County. The two pow-er programs have only met once in football, a 35-0 Camden County thrashing of the Bulldogs in the 2009 state quarterfinals. Both pro-grams have been fixtures in the top 10 in recent years and each has made multiple runs through the state playoffs. The Wildcats have won three state titles since 2003 while North Gwinnett has made the quarterfinals five times since 2006. While North Gwinnett has won 10 games or more seven straight seasons, Camden County’s streak of double-digit win seasons stretches back to 2001. Welton Coffey steps in to try to fill the shoes of former Camden County coach Jeff Herron, who is now at Prince Avenue Christian. Cof-fey is familiar with the Wildcats’ system, as he has been with the King-sland school since 2006. Coffey was an assistant coach at Valdosta for three seasons prior to coming to Camden County. Coffey was head coach at Raines (Fla.) for six seasons, which included a Class AAAA state championship in 1997. North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire has been with the Suwanee school since 2006 and has won 10 or more games in each season. The Brandenburg, Ky., native holds an impressive 78-13 record with the

Bulldogs and also had successful high school coaching stints at Knott County Central (Ky.) and Lexington Catholic (Ky.). Additionally, Sphire was head coach of the Lexington Horsemen in the Indoor Football League from 2002-2003. The Bulldogs enter this season with Sphire’s son, Hayden, man-ning the quarterback position. The younger Sphire will try to hit stand-out wide receivers Nate Brown, Caleb Scott and Daniel Imatorbhebhe against Camden County’s exceptional secondary, which is led by Ala-bama commitments Chris Williams and Kalvaraz Bessent. North Gwin-nett running back C.J. Leggett, a transfer from Chattahoochee, will look for holes behind an offensive line that is led by junior Mitch Hyatt, who is one of the most highly-recruited players in the 2015 class. Camden County will employ its vaunted Wing-T offensive for-mation, which averaged more than 39 points per game last season. The Wildcats will be replacing quarterback Brice Ramsey and running back J.J. Green, who are now both at Georgia. Senior offensive lineman Trayvon Williams, who is all of 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, leads Camden County’s line. The Wildcats pounded Milton 40-7 in a scrimmage last week, proving that they have not missed a step despite losing their head coach and several other key players from last season’s 11-2 Region 1 championship team.

In the final game of the 2013 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, Brookwood will take on McEachern for the first time since 2009. In that season,

McEachern won 42-32 in the opener, but fell 10 games later to the Broncos in the first round of the state playoffs. In 2012 both squads lost in their season-openers in the Dome, but improved throughout the year, and once again finished the regular season with playoff berths. This is the only matchup in the 2013 Kell Classic that pits two losing teams from last year’s event. Brookwood is the third-largest school in the state, just behind second-ranked McEachern. The Indians return one of the best offenses in the state, while Brookwood returns a defensive unit that sought improvements this off-season. There are key players that head coach Mark Crews believes in to strengthen the Broncos’ defense including linebacker Chase Middle-ton and defensive end Chad Price. Crews holds depth on both sides of the football, due to versatile athletes like Josh Collins and Mason LeBlanc. “Whoever ends up being a fullback [Collins or LeBlanc], the other one will play safety and both of those guys are coming along really well,” said Crews. On offense, Joey McLane is the new Broncos quarterback. He steps in for 2012 starter Zach Moon. Running back Josh Brown comes off an 800-yard junior campaign.

McEachern hopes for a big performance from its talented of-fensive weapons. Last year, Walton sparked big play after big play and controlled the game through its successful running attack in beating Brookwood in the Kell Classic. Former Walton running back Tyren Jones scored five touchdowns and had 302 yards in the 35-24 win. This year it is Indians speed merchant Taj Griffin who will be trying to expose the Brookwood defense from the backfield. Senior quarterback Ty Clemons led the Indians to an undefeated Region 4 season last year, and complements Griffin with his speed. Clemons is projected to be an athlete at the next level and has received multiple SEC offers. Indians head coach Kyle Hockman will try to wear down the Brookwood defense by controlling the ball and time of possession. In order to gain control of the game and succeed, Hockman’s defense will have to slow down Brookwood. Indians defensive end Henry Famurewa is committed to Louisville, and the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder will be a tough matchup for Brookwood. The Broncos’ big plays and drives will have to be generated by a new duo of receivers. Clemson signee Kyrin Priester leaves after catch-ing 54 passes for 1,116 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior sea-son, and Matt Price and DaQuan Joy will act in a collective effort to maintain the offensive production post-Priester.

Colquitt County coach Rush Propst said it best: “We might have bit off a little more than we can chew with our schedule.” The slate that the

Packers face in 2013 will likely be the most difficult of any Georgia school. Before the Packers dive into the daunting task of region play, they will play Grayson, Hoover (Ala.), Lovejoy and Carver-Columbus in non-region games. “The schedule is phenomenal, there’s no question about it,” said Propst. Guiding the Packers through the challenging 2013 season is a strong defensive cast led by Ole Miss committed Jamiyus Pittman. Propst believes Pittman is one of the best defensive tackles in the state. On offense, quarterback Daniel Mobley will be joined by Sihiem King in the backfield. In three starts last season Mobley was 68-of-103 passing for 1,014 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gabe Mobley is a versatile offensive lineman that committed to Georgia State this past July. King will be one of the offense’s playmakers. He caught a 50-yard screen from Mobley in Colquitt County’s preseason scrimmage with Norcross. “We are looking for Sihiem to really step up at running back this year,” said Propst. Colquitt County fell victim to Region 7-AAAAAA teams twice last season. North Gwinnett pulled off a 16-14 win in the season opener, and Norcross topped the Packers 41-27 in the semifinals to end the season. Along the way, the Packers battled into the playoffs and handed Cam-den County its first region loss since 1999. The Packers have reached the semifinals or better in each of the past four seasons, and lost to all four eventual state champions in the process. During the offseason Propst lost both of his coordinators with former offensive coordinator Jeff Hammond accepting a job at Foley (Ala.), and defensive coordinator Travis Pearson accepting a position at the University of South Alabama. Propst promoted offensive line and strength coach Shawn Sutton to offensive coordinator and safeties coach Tracy Buckhannon to defen-sive coordinator. “Personally, I like having new coordinators about every couple of years,” said Propst. “It’s always been a trend of mine. It sort of brings new energy to your program. That’s the way I look at it. I don’t look at it as a transition that much. I sort of like it.” Despite possibly the state’s toughest schedule and attrition on the coaching staff, expect the Packers to be successful during their 100th football season.

Improvement on defense will be the priority for Broncos coach Mark Crews this season. The traditionally-sound Brookwood defense al-

lowed 28.8 points per game last season including a 56-21 loss to Mill Creek in the second round of the playoffs.

Coach Bob Sphire has taken North Gwinnett football to new heights. When he arrived at the Suwanee school in 2006, the Bulldogs had

never won 10 games and rarely made the playoffs. Since arriving, Sphire has was won at least 10 games every season and, in the process, has turned the Bulldogs into a perennial state title contender. Sphire is quick to credit the people who have helped make his pro-gram a winner. “You can have all the processes and plans you want, but if you don’t have kids who will come in and work and try to develop within the plan, you won’t have success,” said Sphire. “If you don’t have quality coaches that will come in and execute the plan, it won’t get done. I’ve been blessed most of my career to have players and coaches who will come in and work to try to develop within the plan.” Under Sphire, North Gwinnett has been known for its prolific of-fenses and stout lines of scrimmage. This year’s edition is no different. Defensive end Dante Sawyer, with offers from Alabama, Georgia and Southern California, among many others, leads the defense while one of the state’s top wide receiver corps headlines the offense. Daniel Ima-torbhebhe, Caleb Scott and Nate Brown dominated 7-on-7’s this sum-mer and will be the main targets of Sphire’s son, Hayden, the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. Scott had 38 catches for 684 yards and 11 touch-downs last year, while Brown totaled 41 catches for 491 yards and nine touchdowns. At running back, C.J. Leggett arrived at North Gwinnett in the offseason after transferring from Chattahoochee. Leggett holds offers from Pittsburgh, UCLA and Vanderbilt. Offensive lineman Mitch Hyatt enters his junior year as one of the top offensive line recruits in the na-tion with offers from many top programs. In the Bulldogs’ way is one of the toughest schedules in the state with non-region games against Camden County (in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic) and Grayson in addition to a rough region slate that includes teams like Mill Creek, Peachtree Ridge and defending state champion Norcross. Tough schedules are something Sphire swears by. “To be successful in the kind of region we’re in and to be success-ful in the playoffs, you’ve got to be battle-tested,” said Sphire. “So I’ve always been a firm believer that (a tough schedule) helps your team (become) battled-tested.”

McEachern has made the playoffs four straight times since coach Kyle Hockman’s first year at the west Cobb school. A traditional

power in Cobb County McEachern has been a staple in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, playing in the game since its 1992 inception. The event has become a vital part of the McEachern program. “Every year, it’s a true honor for our school and our program to be in it,” said Hockman. “There’s no question this is a prestigious event. Our kids just really look forward to getting to the Dome.” The Indians faced Brookwood in the inaugural Classic and will play the Broncos again this year to open the season. McEachern’s schedule this year is similar to its slate last season, when the Indians started in the Dome at the Kell Classic, then hosted the Battle of the Big Chicken the following week. Hockman’s squad had the dubious honor of playing the defending state champion, Grayson, then state-finalist Walton just six days later. But the Cincinnati native prefers his schedule this way and set it up this season in similar fashion, with Brookwood in Week 1 followed by Lassiter six days later. “It really separates the region from non-region games because you have that week in between,” he explained. “It’s a great measuring stick for us and it exposes our weaknesses. We find our weaknesses against good teams and then we go try to correct them.” At a glance, the Indians’ strength appears to be on offense this season. Dynamic senior quarterback Ty Clemons and junior running back Taj Griffin return to form one of the deadliest backfields in the state. Clemons has been offered by Kentucky, Syracuse and Georgia Southern, among others. Despite having two full seasons ahead of him, Griffin has offers from powerhouse programs such as Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State and UCLA. Hockman’s face lit up when talking about his talented backfield. “We’re trying to put them in the best positions to succeed and get them the reps, but also make sure we don’t do anything silly and injure them in the preseason,” said Hockman, who has been coaching football since 1990. “They’re really explosive guys and good kids, too. Humble, no prima donna-type stuff.” In addition to Griffin and Clemons, McEachern is also led by ju-nior linemen Chuma Edoga, Chandler Jones and Louisville commitment Henry Famurewa, a defensive end.

After 12 consecutive winning seasons, two in which Camden County went undefeated (2003 and 2008), coach Jeff Herron made the

decision to leave Camden County for a head coaching position at Prince Avenue Christian in Athens. Even though Herron is gone, his legacy will live on at Camden County. The new head coach, Welton Coffey, was the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator under Herron. There is no question Coffey has some big shoes to fill. “We’re getting it done. There’s no question about that,” said Coffey. “The biggest thing here at Camden County High School is the size of the pro-gram. We’re just getting used to the numbers. We have about 180 (players) between ninth grade and seniors. That’s probably the biggest adjustment, but the kids have done an outstanding job as well as the coaching staff.” Camden County opens with perennial-power North Gwinnett in this year’s Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. This colossal matchup will aid in Coffey’s evaluation of his team’s strengths and weaknesses against one of the best teams in Georgia. For Coffey, a game is a game no matter what the stakes may be. “It’s hard to explain how important it is, it’s a football game,” said Coffey. “We go out there to compete and to win. The most important thing is, because it’s a non-region game, we want to see where we are,

like a scrimmage against great competition.” North Gwinnett was 11-2 last season and lost only to the two state finalists: Lovejoy and Norcross. Coffey has five starters returning on offense and five returning on defense. Last season under Herron, the Wing-T offense scored an aver-age of 39 points and the defense allowed only an average of 10 points per game. Coffey has no plans to change the offensive and defensive regimes from what Herron has done in the past. “It’s been pretty good all these years, there’s no question about that,” said Coffey. “It may be a little bit different but the crust, the core and the foundation of what we’re doing won’t change.” In addition to defensive backs Kalvaraz Bessent and Chris Wil-liams, who have both already committed to Alabama, lineman Trayvon Williams has received several offers and Anthony Johnson is an FIU commit. Camden County rolled Peachtree Ridge 42-0 last year in this event to improve to 6-1 all-time in the Classic.

Nick Aube and Matt Price return at safety and Hobson McCain, Chris Dancy and Zach Williams all logged valuable minutes on defense last season as well. The personnel on the defensive side of the ball are improved, but Crews believes that playing good football on offense is the best recipe for being a consistent defensive unit this fall. The Broncos have a big challenge in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic when they face McEachern, known for its high-scoring offense. “One of the ways to limit a team that is really explosive offensively is to play really well on offense,” said Crews. “You keep the ball away from them. When you get a chance to be on defense you have to be sound, aggressive and get the ball back. Obviously we are going to have to play well on defense too, but our offense can limit their opportunities with the ball.” Leading the offense will be new playmakers as Clemson signee Kyrin Priester leaves after catching 54 passes for 1,116 yards and 12 touch-downs during his senior season. Matt Price and Daquan Joy will act in a collective effort to maintain the offensive production post-Priester. Joey McLane is the new signal caller. McLane’s brother Ben led Brookwood to its last state title in 2010, and now starts for Georgia State. Josh Brown will be the feature back and he is a seasoned starter. The physical playmaker started in the secondary as a sophomore and stepped in at fullback last season, rushing for more than 800 yards. Consistency will be the mantra of this Brookwood team and it is something that Crews says he and his staff stressed this offseason. The Broncos compete in Region 8, one of the toughest in the state, while McEachern and Mill Creek form a challenging non-region schedule. Crews and his players, however, approach the season with confidence. “Part of it [confidence] is built into your program,” said Crews. “Past success and tradition adds into the fact that your kids feel like they can play with the best teams and can play in games like the Kell Classic and hold their own.”
