It’s Cobb vs Gwinnett in this year’s edition of annual prep football eventIn the pros, it’s city against city. In college,

it’s state against state. But today, it’s county against county, as four teams from Cobb will face four squads from Gwinnett in this year’s Corky Kell Classic.

TWO GIANTS COLLIDE … Cobb and Gwinnett each boast some of the best high school football in the state. Pro-grams from each county compete at a high level in multiple classifications, making the two counties quite possibly the two pigskin powers of Georgia, all things considered. Cobb has always fielded competitive football teams but has only one GHSA state title to its credit, which came in 1967 when the Marietta Blue Devils won the Class 3A cham-pionship. However, in recent years, all four Cobb programs in the event today have made tremendous strides in getting to the next level. Meanwhile, Gwinnett has had no such is-sues in returning to state championship glory. The painted sign on the water tower off I-85 says it best: “Success lives here.” That slogan rings especially true in high school football ,as Gwinnett teams have combined to win 14 GHSA state titles. But what does it mean for the two coun-ties to be placed in a “Cobb-Gwinnett Chal-lenge” of sorts – similar to the college basket-ball duels between conferences – to determine which county has the better brand of football? “There is a fraternity of coaches and within that fraternity there are pods,” ex-plained North Gwinnett head coach Bob Sphire. “(Gwinnett coaches) respect each other and support each other when we play outside the county.”

MORE THAN JUST A GAME … However, the Classic is not just about the great matchups on the field, it is also about high school kids getting the chance to play in a top-flight facility in front of crowds several times larger than what they see on an average Friday night. “It’s a great experience for our kids to play in a big-time environment in front of 20,000 people,” said Walton head coach Rocky Hildalgo.

Peachtree Ridge head coach Bill Ballard agreed. “The Corky Kell Classic is a real neat thing for high school athletics,” gushed Bal-lard. “Our kids are really excited about get-ting to play where the Falcons and the SEC Championship game is held.” In addition to playing against top compe-tition in a top-flight facility, the programs each benefit from playing in an elite event that takes only the top programs in the state. The coaches and supporters of programs from throughout the metro area go out of their way to try to get an invite from the Kell Classic. “It adds prestige to the program,” ex-plained Hidalgo. “We actively pursue trying to be a part of the event. We really beat down the door trying to get in.” For Lassiter head coach Jep Irwin, the Trojans’ game against North Gwinnett will be his first coaching the east Cobb school. “It’s just tremendous,” said Irwin, who coached Alabama’s Pelham High School last year. “I’ve been looking forward to it since I first got the job. The event means a whole lot to our players, coaches and the community.” An invitation to the Classic is considered a compliment to the individual programs. “It’s a great honor to be asked by Dave Hunter and the Kell family to be a part of the classic,” said Ballard, head coach of Peachtree Ridge. “It is a big deal.” It is also a chance for teams to show their stuff on what might just be the big-gest stage in Georgia high school athlet-ics. The thought of playing in the Dome against a quality opponent is a great moti-vator to the players and also brings a lot of excitement to the fans. “Hopefully, we’ll have a lot of support and show what type of a program we are,” said Ballard. “We’ve been thinking about (the game against McEachern) all summer. We talked about it while we were working out.” While some teams will look at this event as an honor and privilege, others also see it as an opportunity to measure themselves with the best. Kell has made it to the playoffs in recent years, but will use their game against Grayson as a chance to see how far they’ve come.

“Gwinnett teams have been powers in the state the last several years,” said Kell head coach Derek Cook. “We’re trying to climb that ladder.” The Classic has kicked off high school foot-ball in Georgia since 1992 and this year’s edition appears to be one of the most intriguing and com-petitive yet. The only question is: who’s the top dog this year? Cobb or Gwinnett? Black can be reached at [email protected].

The Brookwood Broncos are coming off a 6-6 year

when they lost to Peacthree Ridge in the second round of

the state playoffs. They should be stronger this year with

the players they have coming back. One player to watch

for is QB Ben McClane who has nearly all the Broncos

passing records, while WR Andre Simms has nearly all

the Broncos’ receiving records. Leading the defense will

be LB Cameron Lynch, who will play college football at

Syracuse. With the leadership they have on both sides

of the ball, the Broncos will be a tough team to stop and

should make another run at the playoffs.

Walton got off to a hot start last year, winning

their first six games, but cooled off down the stretch,

as they lost their final four and missed the playoffs for

the first time since 2000. Even though they lost 18 of 22

starters from last year, they still have the running back

duo of Kyle Vorster and Rodney Kazibwe, which might be

the best tandem in Cobb County. Also coming back is QB

Bradley Kilborn who has not been the full-time starter,

but saw plenty of action last year. With the team moving

to Region 5-AAAAA – which only has seven teams – the

Raiders should be back in the playoff picture this season.

The Rams will butt heads with the Longhorns in the opener of the 2010 Classic. Both programs are rising powers in the state and are coming off successful years. Grayson has made steady progress towards the top of Class 5A in the past couple years with ap-pearances in the 2008 semifinals of the state tour-nament. The Rams have not lost a regular season game since 2007. Last season, Mickey Conn’s crew defeated eventual state champ Camden County in the season opener and won their next 11 games before losing to Newnan in the quarterfinals. The Grayson defense will be led by linebacker Michael Peak and defensive back Denzel Nkemdiche. Kell is led by all-state defensive back Brian Ran-dolph who was offered by several SEC and ACC pro-grams before deciding on Tennessee. Kicker Kyle Morris is also a player to watch. Last season, the Longhorns made the playoffs but were thwarted in the first round by Peachtree Ridge, 14-7. Despite the early exit, the playoff berth was a minor miracle for Derek Cook’s squad who had lost their first four games of the season. Kell has been to the playoffs two consecutive times, the first such streak in school history.

It’s a rematch of a 2008 second-round playoff game when North Gwinnett meets Lassiter today. The two schools have been among the most successful in Class 5A over the last two seasons, each finishing in the top 10 a season ago. North Gwinnett will once again be led by dual-threat QB C.J. Uzomah, who threw for 1,723 yards and ran for 710 yards last season. Uzomah, an Auburn com-mitment, welcomes in transfer Garrett Clark to bolster the line. Head Coach Bob Sphire enters his fifth year at the school with an impressive 46-8 record. Lassiter begins a new era of sorts. Former head coach Chip Lindsey and record-setting QB Hutson Mason are gone, with Lindsey now the quarterbacks coach at Troy and Mason the backup QB at Georgia. Jep Irwin takes over as head coach and looks to continue the Trojans’ re-cent success. Eddie Printz, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, is the heir apparent to Mason and impressed at camps over the summer. Sophomore RB Tyren Jones is a weapon in the Lassiter offense. Each team won their respective region last sea-son, both posting undefeated regular seasons before los-ing in the third round. For 2010, North Gwinnett remains the favorite in Region 7, while Lassiter will compete with Etowah and Walton as they move to Region 5.

The nightcap features two of last year’s playoff teams that are once again expected to be serious con-tenders for the Class 5A state championship. McEachern rolled to an undefeated regular sea-son last fall before succumbing to Brookwood 20-10 in the first round of the state tournament. Peachtree Ridge reached the state championship game in 2009 and near-ly made a similar playoff run last season. After taking out Kell and Brookwood, the Lions traveled to Northside, Warner Robins and lost a 20-17 quarterfinal thriller in three overtimes. An intriguing battle of offense versus defense could be on display at the Georgia Dome during this contest. McEachern averaged 40.6 points per game last season and scored at least 31 points in each of their 10 outings prior to the playoff loss against Brookwood. The Indians boasted a lethal two quarterback set in 2009 and both Dondre Purnell and Trent Thompson are returning along with senior tight end Rory Anderson. Peachtree Ridge posted three shutouts in 2009 and held opponents to 10 points or fewer on nine differ-ent occasions. The Lions lost 14 of 22 starters from last year’s squad, but return twins Tanner and Tyler Botts at linebacker and defensive end, respectively.
