Core Values

We believe the primary purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We believe the primary purpose of parents is to train and disciple their children in the Lord. We believe the purpose of coop is to assist and encourage parents in their homeschool. Therefore, we strive together to:

Live in Love Respect others Serve those around us

Statement of Faith

1. The Bible is the inspired infallible authoritative Word of God. (II Timothy 3:16, II Peter 1:20-21)

2. God is three persons in one – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is co-equal and co-eternal. (I John 5:7)

3. Jesus Christ is fully God and man (John 1:1,14) who was:

 Born of a virgin. (Matthew 1:18)  Led a sinless life. (Hebrews 4:15) Died vicariously on the cross as a substitute for sinful men. (Hebrews 9:15) Rose bodily from the grave. ( Matthew 28:1-7, Acts 2:24) Now reigns with the Father. (Acts 2:33; Hebrews 10:12) Will return visibly and personally to the earth, both in salvation and judgment. (Acts 1:11;

Hebrews 9:28)

4. We are all born with a sinful nature (Romans 5:12) that brings with it a penalty of death (Romans 6:23). Salvation only comes through faith in Jesus Christ as one’s personal Lord and Savior. (Acts 4:12, Ephesians 2:8-10)

5. We recognize the traditional family, consisting of one male and one female parent and one or more children (natural or legal) and anticipated children, all related by the institution of marriage. We recognize the exception of a single parent family. We also recognize traditional morality -- purity before marriage and mutual faithfulness in marriage. (1Corinthians 7:2; Ephesians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:3)

6. We acknowledge the sanctity of life (each child is a gift from God whose life begins at conception) and the protection of our children both before and after birth. (Matthew 18:5; Mark 9:42; Luke 17:2)

Note: Classes are taught from a Christian/biblical worldview. Teachers and members of Leadership are required to agree with and sign Statement of Faith. You are welcome to be a non-voting member of iCAN Homeschool without signing our Statement of Faith.

Dress Code

Members should dress appropriately, neatly and modestly during coop and associated activities (field trips, events). In the interest of the group harmony, we ask that each individual consider carefully the wearing of any slogans, sayings, or ideas that might be deemed objectionable or offensive by other members.

Shorts should have an inseam of at least 6 inches. Easy rule of thumb – if your shorts do not touch your fingertips when your hands and laid against your leg, they are too short.

Dresses and skirts should fall to the knee.

Pants should be well fitting, not too tight or too loose, and no holes above the knees or excessive rips and holes. No tights.

No undergarment exposure – be it underwear above the waist of your pants, bras seen through shirts, or exposed bra straps.

Shirts should cover cleavage and the midriff (front and back) even when hands are raised.

No Spaghetti straps – shoulder straps should be at least two fingers wide.

Discipline Policy

All teachers and assistants will demonstrate love, grace, and helpfulness to all students. However, this does not mean that inappropriate behavior or deliberate defiance will be tolerated. Bullying, negative talk to or about another child, name calling, excluding others, unwholesome talk, or behaving in any way that would cause injury to others are behaviors not allowed during any iCAN Homeschool function. No public displays of affection including but not limited to touching or discussions of dating will be allowed at co-op or associated activities (field trips, events).

If behavioral issues arise, the following protocol will be used:

1. The teacher or chaperone will address the problem with the student and notify the parents. If any student causes serious class disruption, he/she will be removed from class that day and taken immediately to the parent. If the parent is not available, the child will be placed in study hall until the parent is located.

2. If the behavior problem persists after parental involvement, the Board will be consulted and a parent/student/board conference will be required. The student may be asked not to return to co-op for a season, on a case-by-case basis.

3. For any behavioral issues beyond the first two measures taken, students will be asked not to return to co-op for the remainder of the year.

Any purposeful acts of violence or vandalism will result in immediate expulsion. We do not anticipate having any problems, but in fairness to all we will adhere to this policy.

5

Page 6: Core Values - Homeschool-Life.com Marketing Site Web viewThe Bible is the inspired infallible authoritative Word of ... on top of the instruments ... event has started to ensure safety

All final decisions will be at the discretion of the Board. This is not an exhaustive list of desired behavior and iCAN Homeschool members should always be guided by Christ’s Golden Rule: So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do unto you.

Parent Expectations

All parents are required to contribute to the co-op's operation for three of the four class periods in one of these ways:

Lead Teacher *required to sign Statement of Faith Co-Teacher *required to sign Statement of Faith Non-Teaching

All non-teaching jobs (class assistant, nursery/toddler, emergency backup, setup, cleanup, and hall monitor) will be assigned by leadership.

• Be on time! This is very important for the co-op to run efficiently.

• Be present on the co-op campus while any of your children are at co-op. In an emergency situation, you can leave the co-op premises if another parent who is at co-op agrees to be responsible for your children at co-op while you are gone; however you must inform a member of leadership of the arrangement and sign a release form. Hardship Co-op participation will only be available to Jr. and Sr. high school students age 12+yrs.  The board will review each case individually.  We truly desire to serve the community and minister to all the students we can.

• Read over class descriptions to determine the best fit for your child’s abilities. Teachers provide a curriculum best suited to their teaching style. Parents are responsible for having their children participate fully in the class with the expectation of completing all homework. Failure to do so is disrespectful to the teacher who has prepared for the class and the other class students participating, as many times full participation plays a role in the progress of each class. It is the parent’s responsibility to keep all grade records. Teachers may or may not provide grades for their classes and are not expected to. Any grades provided by teachers are left to the sole discretion of the parent to keep for their own records. Parents should make decisions for classes chosen based on the needs of their children and are responsible for making sure their child will thrive in each class chosen based on their child’s needs. If a class looks challenging, parents should be certain they are willing to require their child to participate fully in the class.

• The Code of Conduct is a very important policy to uphold. As we strive to be a good example to our children, it is important that we remember to follow the Code of Conduct fully. Gossip in particular, cannot be tolerated. Conflict will always arise when we are doing the work of the Lord, but should be handled according to Matthew 18.

Conflict Resolution

6

Page 7: Core Values - Homeschool-Life.com Marketing Site Web viewThe Bible is the inspired infallible authoritative Word of ... on top of the instruments ... event has started to ensure safety

Unfortunately, personality conflicts and misunderstandings can happen. It is important that we agree on how to deal with these situations, should they arise.

Based on Matthew 18, if conflict arises, parents and teachers should seek to resolve the issue on their own. Gossip is not an option. If either party is unsatisfied or resolution cannot be met, the parties then need to seek the assistance of the Director. As a last resort, the conflict will be taken to the Board and they will make the final decision. What is true for the student is also true for co-op parents: This is not an exhaustive list of desired behavior and co-op members should always be guided by Christ’s Golden Rule: So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do unto you.

Student Expectations

Students are expected to contribute to the co-op's operation in these ways: 1. Abide by the code of conduct, for His glory! 2. Clean up classrooms at the end of each class period prior to dismissal. 3. Participate in co-op set-up or clean-up according to each family’s job assignments.

Students must remain in their classroom for the allotted class time. Students are not allowed to wander through the building. Any student found not in a class without an excuse will be taken immediately to their parent to be returned to class.

Students must participate in the classes they have been assigned to. No skipping of classes is allowed. Children caught skipping a class will be taken to their parent immediately and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

The study hall is a quiet study area. Please be respectful of students who are studying; conversations between students should wait until co-op is over, or during breaks.

Students are not to be in unused classrooms or offices.

Be prompt to class. This is extremely important! The teachers work hard to prepare to teach and have a limited time in each class.

Remember to complete assignments!

Electronic devices on your person or carried in your purse must be silenced and used only for the sole purpose of time management before class begins or after class ends. This includes but in not limited to MP3 players/iPods, cell phones, or tablets. Verifying incoming calls, reading or sending of text messages during class time will be cause for your phone to be collected by the teacher or assistant, and your parent will have to pick it up at the end of the co-op day from the admin table. If there are multiple violations of this rule, you will be required to leave your phone with your parent. At the discretion of the teacher, some classes may be allowed at certain times to use electronic devices for specific purposes, but this will be explained by individual teachers. Video games are not permitted at co-op or associated activities.

No gum is allowed! No food or drink outside the large multi-purpose room for the purpose of snack/meal time.

Substitute Policy If you have a situation where you won’t be able to fulfill your responsibilities at coop please use the following guidelines for finding a substitute. 1. Plan early. If you know of your absence find a substitute ASAP! 2. If you’re an assistant or co-teacher, contact the current lead teacher for your class so they know of your absence. 3. As a last resort, if you are unable to find a substitute via email or word of mouth among class assistants or floaters, please contact the class coordinator by calling or texting. The responsibility falls on you to help find coverage during your absence.

Sick Policy Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Luke 6:31). Please be considerate of others regarding your child(ren) and illnesses. We don’t want coop to be a source of sickness. If you or your children are sick or recovering from an illness, please do not attend coop that day. People with the following symptoms should not attend: 1. Fever or vomiting (within the last twenty-four hours) 2. Colored mucus 3. Diarrhea or nausea 4. Eye drainage Virus or infection (known to be contagious) 5. Head lice or Ring worm This is not an exhaustive list. Please use good judgment for the protection of all the families, so we can provide the highest quality program for all the children.

Hardship Participation PolicyHardship Co-op participation will only be available to Jr. and Sr. high school students age 12+yrs.  To qualify for “Hardship iCAN Co-op Participation”, a family will have to fulfill these criteria:

1. Be a member of the iCAN homeschool group (and have read and signed the parent handbook).2. Parents are unable to commit to being on campus due to responsibilities that keep them from

doing so, not simply because of personal preference, and be willing to explain these special circumstances.

3. A parent who IS on campus for the day will need to agree to serve as the temporary “guardian” for the teen(s).

4. A Hardship Co-op Participation Request needs to be filled out and sent to the board for prayer and review.

Jr. and Sr. High school students (if approved by the board for Hardship Participation) will be able to enroll in classes during open enrollment, after class list has been secured.  While we are still small, teens most probably will be able to get in the classes they want!  There will no other restrictions for these teens, other than abiding by the handbook (which all the students agree to do!)

The board will review each case individually.  We truly desire to serve the community and minister to all the students we can.

Co-op Closure Policy We will make determinations about closings due to weather conditions by 7:00 a.m. on co-op days. Co-op participants will be placed in an e-mail loop which will be our main means of communication. Please check your e-mail by 7:30 a.m. on co-op days for any special notices about bad weather.
