Integrating Models of Undergraduate Education:
The University of Southern California’sMultimedia in the Core Program
Holly Willis, Associate Director
How do you introduce multimedia literacy in a university-wide program, both practically – in terms of building labs, instituting classes and hiring people to teach those classes – and theoretically, in terms of rethinking the parameters of traditional literacy?

IML 104: The Languages of New Media LIFE IN THE NETWORK
For decades, writers and filmmakers have imagined life in the network, whether it’s the inside of the computer featured in Tron, the metaverse in Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, the paraspaces described by Samuel Delaney, or the matrix visited by Neo, Trinity and the other characters in the Matrix trilogy. What was science fiction even a few years ago is much closer to reality now as we spend more and more time in the virtual worlds of Halo2 or World of Warcraft, the user-built environments of Second Life, or even in the vast social networks of Facebook and MySpace.
IML 104: Life in the Network will focus on shifting notions of identity, the body, community and politics as they are transformed within virtual environments. What are the rules of interaction in these spaces? How do ethics shift as avatars interact with avatars? What are artists, activists and educators doing within these environments? And what kinds of social and ideological codes are transformed or left behind as we move into the virtual realm?

From the New Media Consortium:Multimedia literacy is the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual and digital literacy overlap. It involves:
– the ability to understand the power of images and sounds,
– to recognize and use that power,
– to manipulate and transform digital media,
– to distribute that media pervasively,
– and to easily adapt to new forms.
