SnowshoeCommunity Snow

Snowshoeing is a great opportunity to exercise outdoors and a way to take advantage of the excellent weather conditions we have been fortunate to have in 2014. It’s also a time to see Cordillera’s pristine natural beauty during the winter months.

Community Snowshoe hikes are held once a week along some of the 31+ miles of snowshoe trails in Cordillera. The trails in Cordillera are unique in that some of them take you deep in the woods and through the native pine and aspen along the golf courses while others are in the open meadows with excellent views of the Vail Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. Many residents who walk our trails during the summer will experience a new take on each trail in the winter. In addition to community snowshoe trails, property owners are welcome to join the Cordillera Community Ice Fishing Excursion on 12 February 2014.

Trail Manager, Jordan Bender, packs and grooms the winter trail system throughout the season for Cordillera residents to use. His top recommendations for snowshoeing are the Fox Trotter and Quarter Horse Loops out in the Territories located just past the Summit, the Upper El Mirador Loop located at the end of El Mirador road at the Divide as well as the Yuletide Loop at the Nordic Center along the Mountain Course.

Recreation Coordinator, Aubrey Dreessen, will be leading snowshoe hikes during the week. The hikes are designed for novice and advanced snowshoers alike. Just bring yourself, snowshoes and poles for a fun morning along the trails. If you would like a winter trail map, stop by the front desk at the Athletic Center or the Administration office. We look forward to seeing you on Cordillera’s trail system this winter. Listed to the side are February’s scheduled community snowshoe hikes. Please contact Aubrey Dreessen at [email protected] or 970/569-6273 for details on community snowshoe hikes or for ice fishing excursions.

The CPOA and CMD held their Monthly Board Meeting on Monday, 17 January. Please click here for a copy of the January Board Package.

After opening the public meeting(s); and approving the agenda, December payables, and regular/special meeting minutes; the Boards opened the floor to Public Input. Ms. Kitty George requested additional grooming for the Reindeer Run/Short Course Snowshoe Trail such that alternative/shorter routes could be utilized. Ms. Joyce Krasnow inquired about advertising/public relations efforts on behalf of the community. Ms. Krasnow also expressed she thought the “General Store” (facility next to the Athletic Center) would best serve the community as a fitness/wellness annex versus the current planned use as a Discovery Center (for real estate brokers and potential buyers to learn more about Cordillera – as well as a landing/gathering venue for property owners). Mr. Steve Houk noted teleconference listeners sometimes cannot hear portions of the board meeting proceedings and encouraged all participants to ensure they are at/near a microphone when speaking.

The CMD Board opened its 2013 Supplemental Appropriations Hearing to receive public input and consider approval. Upon hearing no additional public comment and being advised by Staff of the incremental increases in the general and debt service funds, the CMD closed the hearing and approved the 2013 Supplemental Appropriation. In addition to the Supplemental Appropriation Hearing/Approval, the CMD Board approved Joint Sewer Collection System and Water System Resolutions between CMD and the Eagle River Water & Sanitation District and Upper Eagle River Water Authority, respectively. CMD was also advised by counsel that a CMD Call for Nominations will be issued o/a 6 February for the upcoming CMD Election in May. Qualified electors seeking to serve on the CMD must submit self-nomination forms by 28 February.

The CPOA Board approved the appointment of Mr. Henry Reed to the Design Review Board. CPOA also received updates on Collections/Delinquent Accounts and Marketing. The CPOA Board reviewed actions already being taken against delinquent account holders as well as potential additional actions (with board, staff & counsel working together to draft additional actions/correspondence). In addition, CPOA approved (re)authorizing funding for community maps and web-key brochures, as well as an additional day of winter videography in support of ongoing Marketing initiatives - with the understanding funds will be repurposed from the current 2014 Marketing Budget. CPOA also received an update on Community Outreach initiatives.

Lastly, the CPOA and CMD Boards discussed the current Joint Governance Guidelines and agreed to have its board members review the current working draft and provide comment back to their respective board president by 14 February. In turn, the board presidents will consolidate the comments and present/discuss at the February Board Meeting.

The next joint meeting of the CPOA and CMD is scheduled for Friday, 21 February, 8:30 a.m. All property owners are most welcome. For those unable to attend, a teleconference line is available to listen to the meeting. To access the meeting teleconference please dial 1-805-309-2350, when prompted, enter access code 325-6129. If you have any questions regarding the board meetings, please contact Mrs. Elizabeth Aviles, Executive Coordinator, at 970-569-6267 or [email protected]

The DRB is now full with five board members. Pre-construction activity is beginning to increase with new construction, additions and remodels that are being reviewed for spring starts.

This year we are seeing more activity with new construction, remodels and property improvements; and welcome the projects. Fortunately we have a full Board, consisting of five dedicated board members, who review and meet with applicants to makes sure any work done in the community continues to follow the Cordillera Design Guidelines. To view the current Design Guidelines, please click here.

If you live in an Enclave, and have a home improvement you would like to, do contact your HOA first for approval then the DRB administrator.

There are some projects that do not need DRB approval, but the DRB still needs to be notified. This helps us to keep Public Safety current on construction projects.

For more information about the DRB and its responsibilities, please click here. If you have additional questions regarding the Design Guidelines or approval process, please contact the DRB Administrator, Ms. Millie Aldrich, at [email protected]

We are here to help and guide you through the approval process.

No Overnight Parking On CMD Roads - Property Owners are reminded that there is no overnight parking on CMD roads during the winter so that Community Operations can plow snow. Please contact the Divide Gatehouse (970-926-2335) if you need help with overnight parking. Property owners who are planning parties are asked to contact Public Safety to arrange for parking. Public Safety would ask that parking be limited to one side of the road and that there be no parking on curves. Public Safety will help by placing cones to direct parking.

Cordillera Address Markers - In the event of an emergency can first responders find your house?  Not if the addresses are covered by snow! Property Owners are encouraged to keep their address rocks clear of snow so that in the event of an emergency first responders are not delayed in locating the home.

Gas Meter Protection - Falling snow and ice from roofs has been known to seriously damage gas meters and cause dangerous gas leaks. Property Owners are reminded to either protect gas meters from falling snow or make sure snow above the meters is cleared. Exterior and Landscaping Lighting - We would like to remind property owners that with the exception of the seasonal display of decorative holiday lighting (between 15 November through 15 January, to be turned off by 10:00 p.m.), colored lights (between 15 December through 15 January, to be turned off by 10:00 p.m.), and small white lights in a reasonable amount of trees (between 15 November through 15 March, to be turned off by 10:00 p.m.), the use of exterior landscape lighting is not permitted. Spotlights, up-lighting of trees and landscape lighting shall not be permitted.

Please contact Mr. Bob Egizi, Public Safety Director, at 970/569-6261 or [email protected], if you have questions or would like further information on any of the aforementioned items.

Bearcat Bearcat Stables

Nestled in the Squaw Creek Valley in Cordillera, 15 minutes west of Beaver Creek, Colorado, Bearcat’s Cabin is the original cabin the Bearden family homesteaded during the early 20th century. Thanks to the efforts of the Cordillera Preservation Foundation and Bearcat Stables, the Cabin has been completely restored, and now acts as one of Vail’s most historic restaurant settings.

You and your family are invited to tour these historic grounds via Horse and Sleigh while sipping on your favorite beverage. Our knowledgeable team drivers will give you the history of the land and make your journey unforgettable. Bring your camera because you will want to take pictures of these majestic 2000 pound animals.

After your ride, step into a piece of Colorado history as you dine in this historic setting. The cuisine is world- class as it is prepared by Executive Chef Collin Smelser of Mirador Restaurant of the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera.

It has been a very successful first two years operating the sleigh rides and dinners out of the cabin located on the stables’ property. We enjoy a strong and healthy partnership with The Lodge and Spa, who caters the dinners. With the additions of the porch, heat, liquor license, and general grounds maintenance - it is the perfect place to enjoy dinner in a rustic setting summer and winter. Although a great deal of business comes from the general public, we have had many homeowners enjoy the property over the last two years; with many, if not all, of them commenting on what a great amenity it is for the community. It is the most unique setting in all of Vail Valley because it is a one of a kind experience you can not find anywhere else. Since Bearcat Stables is located in Cordillera, it is a huge bonus for both amenities having such a rich history in Vail Valley. The Cabin is also available for private parties for smaller groups of up to 35 in the winter, but can be provide space up to 200 in the summer by utilizing the grounds on the north side.

14 Marketing Colorado: Making the Pie Bigger vs. Taking a Slice

With Kelly Brough, Aaron Kennedy and Steve Sander

Exploring and mining brought the first westerners to Colorado. Then, as recent as the 1960s, boomed an entirely new and hugely profitable industry of tourism. Today, Colorado enjoys a $17 billion tourism industry but businesses will need to start working together to see this field of business continue to grow.

Join the Vail Symposium for this great program on Thursday, 20 February 2014, at the Timber Hearth Grill in Cordillera. If you are interested in the tourism industry, marketing, small business ownership, digital or traditional media, Vail and Beaver Creek history, or if you are a former business owner or marketing professional you will enjoy this event thoroughly.

This presentation will focus on the marketing practices implored by Colorado businesses and how a new way of thinking can help boost revenue for everyone. The idea of working together comes from the notion of growing the industry for everyone as opposed to capitalizing on it in the short term – an idea rooted in fear, scarcity and small-mindedness.

Creating a win-win for Colorado businesses through their marketing efforts, the event will feature three of Colorado’s marketing experts – Kelly Brough, Aaron Kennedy and Steve Sander. Please join us for food and drink at the Timber Hearth in Cordillera this February 20th.

Kelly Brough is the CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of

Commerce.

Aaron Kennedy is Colorado’s Chief Marketing Officer

Steve Sander is the president of Sander

Short CourseShort Course

With all the snow on the ground, presumably not many of you are thinking about golf, but at the Short Course we are all golf all the time! We are getting excited to start our 2nd season here and have been working diligently on making your Short Course experience even better. With a season under our belt, we anticipate the course being in excellent condition and we hope that Cordillera property owners make it their goal to come visit us in 2014. We also want to announce the return of The Dave Pelz Golf Schools. The school will be expanded to eight weeks while making classes smaller to not interfere with golfers that are just coming to play or practice. In addition, we have some exciting new junior golf programming that is scheduled to include the Cordillera Elite Junior Golf Academy. Also, we are in the process of restructuring our unlimited golf pass for the 2014 season. We would like to thank property owners for all of your feedback and we believe you will find our new offerings very appealing. Stay tuned for details!

As you know, we are always trying to refine our operations. We would also like to inform you that a survey will soon be sent out and we would appreciate any feedback you can provide to help us improve and make your experience better. Bo Heidrick, PGADirector of GolfThe Short Course at [email protected]

The Lodge & SpaZumba is a Latin dance based exercise class to keep you moving and burning calories while having a great time. You’ll be amazed of how fast the hour goes by and how much you’re sweating at the end. Michele has been teaching fitness for over 30 years and designs her classes to fit the participants. Moves can be modified or intensified to fit each person’s ability and style. She chooses music that is not only fun to dance to, but inspired by her students. Music and dance selections vary from a sing along oldie to a boot scooting country tune. You’ll never be bored and you’ll have loads of fun! No dance experienced necessary! A major study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine added to the growing evidence that stimulating one's mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit.  Dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages.

Come join the fun Mondays at 9:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m., Fridays at 9:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. The class is $10 for Lodge members and $15 for non-lodge members. Call the spa desk for reservations.
