Dear Mr. Naudé,

Billabong has always stood out to me as a company of color, life-inspired designs and visual appeal. My skills with photogra-phy, video, drawing, design and more could really complement the look that your company goes for.

As a staff member of my high school’s yearbook, I’ve ex-perienced tough deadlines and I know how to edit a piece until it’s just right. The skills that I’ve acquired through classes in art, journalism and video could suit me for a position as a graphic designer for tee shirts or any type of marketing.

I have a strong work ethic in everything I do and I never leave a job unfinished. I’m very creative and I always put person-ality into what I do. I see beauty in every little thing and I like to take inspiration from all parts of this world and put them into my work.

I hope you like what you see in my portfolio and if you do, I’d be honored to meet someone from your company personally for an interview.

Respectfully yours,

Coral Dixon

I have mixed feelings for Journalism. Sometimes I love journalism because I’m doing well and having fun. Other times, journalism drives me crazy with the stressful deadlines and annoying pages.

My favorite part of journalism is shooting pictures at games or events. My favorite page I’ve ever done is the soc-cer page I did, mostly because all of the pictures on the page are mine except on. I also have photo credits on another person’s page for JV soccer and the newspaper has used one of my soccer pictures. I think the pictures look really good and have good resolution so it’s something I’ve done by my-self that I’m proud of.

I also like making fonts look cool in different colors that match well in InDesign.

Some parts of journalism are not my favorite, mostly the editing process. I have a great teachable spirit and con-structive criticism is the best, but it really gets to me when I feel like my work is being micromanaged.

I started journalism my freshman year. I’d always done well in writing and enjoyed writing stories so I thought I’d give Journalism 1 a try. I liked learning how to work the many areas of journalism, even if I wasn’t the best at it. The fun experience of Journalism 1 led me to apply for yearbook.

For me, to be successful was to take advantage of all the class time I was given and commit myself to my work by making games and events a priority and come in after school when it was necessary.

Through journalism, I’ve acquired skills that can carry onto professions later in life, including time and stress man-agement and organization skills.

This year, I learned what it takes to do well in a jour-nalism class. I learned the importance of taking advantage of every minute of class time. I learned the importance of orga-nized lists and communication between partners.

My best deadlines were ones where I took control of the page from the start. I contacted coaches and players and went to every game I could. I put together a list of kids I was picturing and quoting and I put checks next to the ones I’d finished.

With partners, we had to establish roles and communi-cation from the start. It was a frustrating experience trying to learn how to work with others, but the pages turned out well when we collaborated our work peacefully.

I’ve gained knowledge that I can use later in life. I could easily use the organizational or teamwork skills in a real life job. My experience with deadlines gives me an up-per hand in a job situation over inexperienced people.

Overall, I’ve learned how to keep myself on task and professional so that I can produce things that I’m proud of in good time.

I am most proud of this piece. It was the Boys Varsity Soccer page. I found the page easy because I enjoyed watching the games and taking pictures on the sidelines. The coach and players were friendly and easy to approach for an interview. What I’m most proud of is the fact that every picture on the page I took except one. I also did the body copy, captions and secondary coverage.

My first deadline, a quote page, is the piece that I think could still use work. I didn’t fully understand the process yet and I didn’t take it very seriously. I didn’t get good answers to my question, but if I were to redo it, I’d get much better answers. I now know how to get people to talk. Also, some of the pictures are grainy, so I’d reshoot the pictures if I were to do the page again.

My favorite pictures that I’ve taken this year have been soccer pictures. I had a lot of fun going to games and I was proud of the pictures in the end. I was really excited when one of my pictures was published in the Highlights newspaper. A quality of my pictures that I like is that they don’t need a lot of editing in order to be ready for press.

I was an asset to the Legend staff because I came to class everyday, every workday and came in on my own time when necessary. I commited to the yearbook staff and when I commit to something, I commit until the end. I also think I was a strong interviewer and photographer. I learned the applications quickly so I could keep pace with returning staff members.

Hardships that I faced this year were mostly pertaining to not taking things as seriously as I should have. I would sometimes not make my pages a priority and it showed. The pages that I put a lot of serious effort into in the beginning ended up to be the best. I learned that I should start whatever project I have right away and consistently work on it until it is done. Overall, I think I handled being late on deadlines badly bye getting too stressed so that it was hard to concentrate and work without freaking out.

A goal that I made for myself at the end of the first semester was to start as early as I can on deadlines. I accomplished this goal on every deadline except for my Boys Track and Field page. I didn’t take the pages very seriously. This lack of initiative showed in the final product. Another goal was to plan ahead and get a calendar of my own to remind me of upcoming deadlines and important dates. Although I never got my own personal calendar, I improved my ability to remember things that I had to get done. My last goal was to find something to do while waiting for edits during work days. I had some success with this and it really helped with my stress level. I was less anxious when I concentrated on homework instead of all of the editors I still had to go through.

This is the perfect example of how I’d like to be represented as a photographer. I love to take pictures of soccer. I love how the light reflects of the white uniform. This picture to me, is a shot of Boone athleticism. Fast, motivated, hardworking, strong.
