FTTH status of Japan

FTTH (25.0 mil.) and LTE (38.8 mil.) are main Broadband media in Japan. Coverage of FTTH is around 93%, and FTH + LTE is 99.9%. FTTH is matured, and LTE and Wi-Fi are in the growth stage.

CAPEX/OPEX reduction

Optical investment of NTT (NTT East + NTT West)

Optical investment by NTT group is peaked out at 2007. Optical investment per subscriber-year is getting low around

30,000 yen by increase of FTTH users and reduction of CAPEX/OPEX through long time experience and R&D.

Applications enforced the deployment of FTTH

VoIP is still the No.1 application on FTTH. The price of VoIP+FTTH, lower than ADSL+PSTN in early era, moved customers from ADSL into FTTH.

IPTV/RFTV, remote support, virus check, and wireless spot have been good applications to attract peoples to FTTH.

What is required for the everyday-life?

Big contents have driven the deployment of FTTH in Japan since 2001, and enough fibers are already available everywhere.

FTTH services has turned profitable in 2011 and has become the primary services in fixed services.

As for the infrastructure, FTTH has a lot of good features not only the bandwidth, but also reliability, stability, safety, security, accessibility, coverage, and affordability, etc.

These features are suitable to provide application services for the issues in everyday life, such as aging society or natural disasters.

What is next application?

NTT is providing various services on FTTH in Japan, but, it is very limited usage of what fiber network can do.

NTT hopes to utilize whole capability of fiber network with plenty of applications for all segments of market, but it seems impossible for NTT to provide all applications solely.

FTTH market is already matured in Japan as you seen. We have to search new way to create another services effectively.

SNR is insufficient, so that a long time is required for re-iteration of measurements. (typically, it takes over 10 hours.)

Solution: FDM-OTDR dramatically saves fiber-testing time.

30

FDM-OTDR can save fiber-testing time by multiple frequency pulses. ex.) SNR is increased +8 dB by FDM-OTDR , so that 13 hours fiber-testing

by C-OTDR is reduced to 20 min. (10log dB, 1/N, @N=40))

Comparable to conventional C-OTDR in terms of size and cost.

CW light source (one narrow-linewidth laser) is controlled by an external modulator. Multiple frequencies lights are detected by a single coherent receiver, digitized with an

analog/digital (A/D) converter, and demultiplexed by digital signal processing.
