structure (Pentium II/III and Celeron™ processors), up to 768MB of memory, super I/O,

Chapter 2 Installing the Motherboard

This BH6 motherboard not only provides all standard equipment for classicpersonal computers, but also provides great flexibility for meeting futureupgrade demands. This chapter will introduce step by step all the standardequipment and will also present, as completely as possible, future upgradecapabilities. This motherboard is able to support all Intel Pentium II/IIIprocessors and Intel Celeron™�processor now on the market. (For details, seespecifications in Chapter 1.)

������������ Installing the Motherboard to the Casing

Most computer chassis will have a base on which there will be many mountingholes that allows the motherboard to be securely attached and at the same time,prevents short circuits.

There are two ways to attach the motherboard to the base of chassis:

z with studz or with spacer

Please refer the figure below show the studs and spacers, they may have severaltypes, but all look like the figure below:

In principle, the best way to attach the motherboard is with studs, and only ifyou are unable to do this should you attach the board with spacers. Take acareful look at the motherboard and you will see many mounting holes on it.Line these holes up with the mounting holes on the base. If the holes line up,and there are screw holes this means you can attach the motherboard with studs.If the holes line up and there are only slots, this means you can only attach themotherboard with spacers. Take the tip of the spacers and insert it into the slots.After doing this to all the slots, you can slide the motherboard into positionaligned with the slots. After the motherboard has been positioned, check tomake sure everything is OK before putting the casing back on.

The figure below will show you the way to fix the motherboard using with thestub and spacer:

Note: If the motherboard has mounting holes, but don’t line up with the holeson the base and their are no slots to attach the spacers, don’t worry, youcan still attach the spacers to the mounting holes. Just cut the buttonportion of spacers (the spacer may be a little and hard to cut off, so becareful of your hands). In this way you can still attach the motherboardto the base without worrying about short circuits.

Sometimes you may need to use the plastics spring for isolate the screw frommotherboard PCB surface, because the circuit wire may be near by the hole.Be careful don’t let the screw to contact any printed circuit wire and parts onPCB that near by the fixing hole, otherwise it may damage the board or causethe board malfunction.

������������ Standard External Connectors

Inside the case of any computer several cables and plugs have to be connected.These cables and plugs are usually connected one-by-one to connectors locatedon the motherboard. You need to carefully pay attention to any connectionorientation the cables may have and, if any, notice the position of the first pin ofthe connector. In the explanations that follow, we will describe the significanceof the first pin.

PN1(Pin 1-2-3-4-5): Keylock and Power LED Header

There is a specific orientation for pin 1 through pin 5. Insert the two-threadedkeylock cable into pin 4 and pin 5, and three-threaded power LED cable to Pin1~pin 3. Check to make sure the correct pins of connector on the motherboard.

(3) Jumper and SwitchesYou can set jumper switches on the motherboard to configure varioushardware options. See Figure 1-1 for jumper locations.

Throughout this section, the following symbols are used to indicate jumpersettings.

Note: To avoid losing jumper caps, attach the removed jumper cap to one of the jumper pins.

(4) Installation of the Pentium�

�II/III, Celeron ™ CPU

The installation method for the CPU is printed on the package of the retention

mechanism that comes with the motherboard. You can refer to it while you

install the CPU. This motherboard also supports the Celeron™ PPGA processor.

If you want to install the Celeron™ PPGA processor, you have to use an

additional adapter that allows you to use a Celeron™ PPGA processor in a slot 1

board. For this ABIT makes the SlotKET adapter.

Note:

z Installing a heat sink and cooling fan is necessary for proper heat dissipation

from your CPU. Failing to install these items may result in overheating and

damage of your CPU.

z Please refer to your boxed processor installation or other documentation

attached with your CPU for detailed installing instructions.

(5)����Installing System MemoryThe motherboard provides three 168-pin DIMM sites for memory expansion..The DIMM socket supports 1Mx64(8MB), 2Mx64(16MB), 4Mx64(32MB),8Mx64(64MB), 16Mx64(128MB), and 32Mx64(256MB) or double sidedDIMM modules. Minimum memory size is 8MB and maximum memory size is768MB SDRAM.

There are three Memory module sockets on the system board.(Total six banks)

In order to create a memory array, certain rules must be followed. The followingset of rules allows for optimum configurations.

z The memory array is 64 or 72 bits wide. (Without parity or with parity)z Those modules can be populated in any order.z Support single and double density DIMMS.

Chapter 3 Introduction of BIOS

The BIOS is a program located on a Flash Memory chip on themotherboard. This program will not be lost when you turn the computer off.This program is also referred to as the boot program. It is the only channel forthe hardware circuit to communicate with the operating system. Its mainfunction is to manage the setup of the motherboard and interface cardsparameters, including simple parameters such as time, date, hard disk drive, aswell as more complex parameters such as hardware synchronization, deviceoperating mode, CPU SOFT MENU™ II techniques, setup of CPU speed. Thecomputer will operate normally, or will operate at its best, only if all theseparameters are correctly configured through the BIOS.

When you start the computer, it is controlled by the BIOS program. TheBIOS first operates an auto-diagnostic for all the necessary hardware,configures the parameters of the hardware synchronization, and detects all thehardware. Only when these tasks are completed does it give up control of thecomputer to the program of the next level, which is the operating system. Sincethe BIOS is the only channel for hardware and software to communicate, it willbe the key factor for system stability, and to ensure that your system performs atits best. After the BIOS has achieved the auto-diagnostic and auto-detectionoperations, it will display the following message:

Three to five seconds after the message is displayed, if you press the Delkey, you will access the BIOS Setup menu. At that moment, the BIOS willdisplay the following message:

0000 Don’t change the parameters inside the BIOS unless you know whatyou are doing

The parameters inside the BIOS are used to setup the hardwaresynchronization or the device operating mode. If the parameters are notcorrect, they will produce errors, the computer will crash, and sometimes youwill even not be able to boot the computer after it has crashed. Werecommend that you do not change the parameters inside the BIOS unless youare familiar with them. If you are not able to boot your computer anymore,please refer to the section “Erase CMOS data” in Chapter 2.

In the BIOS Setup main menu of Figure 3-1, you can see several options. Wewill explain these options step by step in the following pages of this chapter,but let us first see a short description of the function keys you may use here:

z Press Esc to quit the BIOS Setup.z Press �� � (up, down, left, right) to choose, in the main menu,

the option you want to confirm or to modify.z Press F10 when you have completed the setup of BIOS parameters to

save these parameters and to exit the BIOS Setup menu.z Press Page Up/Page Down or +/- keys when you want to modify the

BIOS parameters for the active option.

CMOS DATA

Maybe you have heard somebody saying that their CMOSDATA was lost. What is the CMOS? Is it important? TheCMOS is the memory used to store the BIOS parameters thatyou have configured. This memory is passive. You can read itsdata, and you can also store data in it. But this memory has tobe powered by a battery, in order to avoid any loss of its datawhen the computer is turned off. The CPU can be setup through a programmable switch (CPU SOFT MENU™

II ), that replaces traditional manual hardware configuration. This feature allowsthe user to complete more easily the installation procedures. You can install theCPU without configuring any jumpers or switches. The CPU must be setupaccording its specifications. In the first option, you can press <F1> at any time to display all the items thatcan be chosen for that option.

bus speed divided by 3 and times 2. If you choose the setting to“ 1/1 ”, AGP bus speed will equal to CPU bus speed.

<Note 5> L2 Cache Latency: Sixteen setting are available, Default, and 1 to 15. This item can let

you adjust the processor L2 cache speed, the larger the value, thefaster the L2 cache will run. You have to be aware that if you set theL2 cache speed too fast, it will cause the L2 cache to fail. If the L2cache fails it will cease to run until you reset the value, but theprocessor and L1 cache will still function, just not as well. To makesure your L2 cache functions properly please choose an appropriatesetting. The default setting is Default.

<Note 6> Speed Error Hold: Default setting is “Disable”. If you choose the setting to “Enable”,when CPU speed setting is wrong, then system will hold.

Normally, we do not recommend that you use the “User Define” option to setupCPU speed and multiplier factor. This option is for setup of future CPUs whosespecifications are still unknown. The specifications of all present CPUs areincluded in the default settings. Unless you are very familiar with all CPUparameters, it is very easy to make mistakes when you define by yourself theexternal clock and the multiplier factor.

Solution in case of booting problem due to invalid clock setup:

Normally, if the CPU clock setup is wrong, you will not be able to boot. In thiscase, turn the system off than on again. The CPU will automatically use itsstandard parameters to boot. You can then enter BIOS Setup again and set upthe CPU clock.

If you can’t enter BIOS setup , you must try turning the system on a few times(3~4 times) or press “ INSERT “ key when turn on and the system willautomatically use its standard parameters to boot. You can then enter BIOSSETUP again and set up the new parameters.

When you change your CPU:

The motherboard have been designed in such a way that you can turn the systemon after having inserted the CPU in the socket without having to configure anyjumpers or DIP switches. But if you change your CPU, normally, you just haveto turn off the power supply, change the CPU and then, set up the CPUparameters through CPU SOFT MENU™ II. However, if the CPU brand andtype is the same, and if the new CPU is slower than the old one, we offer youtwo methods to successfully complete the CPU change operation.

Method 1: Setup up the CPU for the lowest speed for its brand.Turn the power supply off and change the CPU.Then turn the system on again, and set up the CPUparameters through CPU SOFT MENU™ II .

Method 2: Since you have to open the computer case when youchange the CPU, it could be a good idea to use theCCMOS jumper to erase the parameters of theoriginal CPU and to enter BIOS Setup to set up CPUparameters again.

Attention: After setting up the parameters and you leave the BIOS SETUP,and you have verified that the system can be booted, do not pressthe Reset button or turn off the power supply. Otherwise the BIOSwill not read correctly, the parameters will fail and you must enterCPU SOFT MENU™ II again to set up the parameters all overagain.

CPU Power Supply:

This option allows you to switch between CPU Default and user define voltage.

³³³³CPU Default: System will detect CPU type and select proper voltageautomatically. When it is enabled ,the option “Core Voltage”will show the current voltage setting that is defined by theCPU and this will not be changeable. We recommend usingthis CPU default setting and not changing it unless currentCPU type and voltage setting can not be detected or notcorrect.

³³³³User define: This option lets the user select the voltage manually. You canchange values of the “Core Voltage” option lists by using thePage Up and Page Down keys.

Warning: The wrong settings of the multiplier and external clock in certaincircumstances may cause CPU damage. Setting the workingfrequency higher than the PCI chipset or processor specs, may causeabnormal memory module functioning; system hangs; hard diskdrive data lose; VGA card abnormal functioning, or abnormalfunctioning in other add-on cards. Using non-specification settingsfor your CPU is not the intention of this explanation. These shouldbe used for engineering testing, not for normal applications.

The HDD auto detection option in the Main Menu will automatically detect

the parameters of your hard disk and the mode supported.

³ Normal mode: Standard normal mode supports hard disks of 528MB or less.This mode directly uses positions indicated by Cylinders(CYLS), Heads, and Sectors to access data.

³ LBA (Logical Block Addressing) mode: The earlier LBA mode can support HDDs capacity of up to8.4GB, and this mode uses a different method to calculate theposition of disk data to be accessed. It translates Cylinders(CYLS), Heads and Sectors into a logical address where dataare located. The Cylinders, Heads, and Sectors displayed inthis menu do not reflect the actual structure of the hard disk,they are just reference values used to calculate actual positions.Currently, all high capacity hard disks support this mode, that’swhy we recommend you use this mode. Currently, the BIOScan support INT 13h extension function, then the LBA modesupports hard disk drives capacity exceeding 8.4GB.

³ LARGE Mode: When the number of cylinders (CYLs) of the hard disk exceeds1024 and DOS is not able to support it, or if your operatingsystem does not support LBA mode, you should select thismode.

Drive A:If you have installed the floppy disk drive here, then you can select the type of floppy drive it can support. Six options are available: NoneÎ360K, 5.25 in. Î1.2M, 5.25in. Î720K, 3.5 in. Î1.44M, 3.5 in. Î2.88M, 3.5 in. ÎBack to None.

FDD supporting 3 Mode:3 Mode floppy disk drives (FDD) are 3 1/2” drives used in Japanese computer systems. If you need to access data stored in this kind of floppy, you must select this mode, and of course you must have a 3 Mode floppy drive.

Video:You can select the VGA modes for your video adapter, five options are available: MONOÎEGA/VGA ÎCGA 40ÎCGA 80 ÎBack to MONO. The default setting is EGA/VGA.

Halt On:You can select which type of error will cause the system to halt. Five options are available: All ErrorsÎNo ErrorsÎAll, But KeyboardÎAll, But DisketteÎAll, But Disk/KeyÎBack to All Errors.

You can see your system memory list in the lower right box, it shows the BaseMemory, Extended Memory and Other Memory size in your system.

(3) BIOS Features Setup Menu

BIOS Features Setup Menu has already been set for maximum operation. If youdo not really understand each of the options in this menu, we recommend youuse default values.

In each item, you can press <F1> at any time to display all the options for thisitem.

Virus Warning:This item can be set as Enable or Disable.

When this feature is enabled, if there is any attempt from a software or anapplication to access the boot sector or the partition table, the BIOS willwarn you that a boot virus is attempting to access to the hard disk.

CPU Internal Cache:This item is used to Enable or to Disable the CPU level 1 cache. When thecache is set at Disable, it is much slower, so the default setting for this itemis Enable. Some old and very bad programs will make the computermalfunction or crash if the system speed is too high. In that case, youshould Disable this feature.

External Cache:This item is used to enable or to disable the CPU level 2 cache. When theexternal cache is enabled, the system works faster. The default is Enable.

CPU L2 Cache ECC Checking:This item is used to enable or to disable the CPU level 2 cache ECCchecking function.

Quick Power On Self Test:After the computer has been powered on, the BIOS of the motherboardwill run a series of tests in order to check the system and its peripherals. Ifthe Quick power on self-test feature is Enable, the BIOS will simplify thetest procedures in order to speed up the boot process. The default isEnable.

Boot Sequence:When the computer boots up, it can load the operating system from floppydrive A:, hard disk drive C:, SCSI disk drive or CD-ROM. Boot Up Floppy Seek:When computer boots up, the BIOS detects if the system has FDD or not.When this item is enabled, if the BIOS detects no floppy drive, it willdisplay a floppy disk drive error message. If this item is disabled, the BIOSwill skip this test.

Boot Up NumLock Status:³ On: At boot up, the Numeric Keypad is in numeric mode.³ Off: At boot up, the Numeric Keypad is in cursor control mode.

IDE HDD Block Mode:This item can be set as Enable or Disable.

Most of new hard disk drives (IDE drives) support multi-sector transfers.This feature speeds up hard disk drive access performance and reduces thetime necessary to access data. When this item is enabled, the BIOS willautomatically detect if your hard disk drive supports this feature or not, andwill choose the right settings for you. ( The default is Disable )

Security Option:This option can be set to System or to Setup.

After you have created a password through PASSWORD SETTING, thisoption will deny access to your system (System) or modification ofcomputer setup (BIOS Setup) by unauthorized users.

³ SYSTEM: When you choose System, a password is required each time the computer boots up. If the correct password is not given, the system will not start.

³ SETUP: When you choose Setup, a password is required only when accessing the BIOS Setup. If you have not set a password in the PASSWORD SETTING option, this option is not available.

Notice: Don’t forget your password. If you forget the password, you will

have to open the computer case and clear all information in theCMOS before you can start up the system. But doing this, youhave to reset all the options you had set up before.

PCI /VGA Palette Snoop:This option allows the BIOS to preview VGA Status, and to modify theinformation delivered from the Feature Connector of the VGA card to theMPEG Card. This option can solve the display inversion to black after youhave used the MPEG card.

OS Select For DRAM > 64MB:When the system memory is bigger than 64MB, the communicationmethod between the BIOS and the operating system will differ from oneoperating system to another. If you use OS/2, select OS2; if you chooseanother operating system, select Non-OS2.

Report No FDD For WIN 95 :When using Windows 95 without floppy drive , please set this item to Yes.

Delay IDE Initial (Sec):This item is used to support some old model or special type of hard disksor CD-ROMs , since the BIOS may not detect those kinds of devicesduring system booting .

Processor Number Feature:This feature can let the program read the data inside your processor. This

feature only works with Intel® Pentium® III processors. When you install a

Pentium® III processor into your motherboard, and when your system

boots-up then this item will show up in BIOS.

Two items will be available: Enabled and Disabled. When you chooseEnabled, the specific program can read your processor's serial number.When you choose Disabled it will not allow the program to read yourprocessor's serial number. The default setting is Disabled.

Video BIOS Shadow:This option is used to define whether the BIOS on the video card usesshadow feature or not. You should set this option to Enable, otherwise thedisplay performance of the system will greatly decrease.

Shadowing address ranges (C8000-CBFFF Shadow):This option allows you to decide if the memory block (BIOS) of aninterface card at the address C8000-CBFFF uses the shadow feature or not.If you have no interface card using this memory block, don’t enable thisoption.

SHADOWWhat is the SHADOW? The BIOS of standard video orinterface cards is stored in ROM, and it is often very slow.With the Shadow feature, the CPU reads the BIOS on theVGA card and copies it into RAM. When the CPU runs thisBIOS, the operation is speeded up.

(4) Chipset Features Setup Menu

The Chipset Features Setup Menu is used to modify the contents of the buffersin the chipset on the motherboard. Since the parameters of the buffers areclosely related to hardware, if the setup is not correct or false, the motherboardwill become unstable or you will not be able to boot up. If you don’t know thehardware very well, use default values (i.e. use the LOAD SETUP DEFAULTSoption).

You can use the arrow keys to move between the items. Use PgUP, PgDn, + or- key to change the values. When you have finished setting up the chipset, pressESC to go back to the main menu.

SDRAM RAS-to-CAS DelayThis field lets you control the number of DCLKs between a Row Activatecommand and a read or write commend.

SDRAM RAS Precharge TimeThe precharge time is the number of cycles it takes for the RAS toaccumulate its charge before DRAM refresh. If insufficient time is allowed,reflash may be incomplete and the DRAM may fail to retain data. This fieldapplies only if synchronous DRAM is installed in the system.

SDRAM CAS latency Time:Three options are available: Auto, 2 and 3. You can select SDRAM CAS(Column Address Strobe) latency time according your SDRAM specification.

SDRAM Precharge Control:Two options are available: Enabled and Disabled. This option specifies thelength Disabled of the RAS precharge part of the DRAM system memoryaccess cycle when SDRAM system memory is installed. The default settingis Disabled.

DRAM Data Integrity Mode:Two options are available: Non-ECC or ECC. This option use to configurethe type of DRAM in your system. ECC is Error Checking and Correction,when your memory is ECC memory, the choose the ECC option.

System BIOS Cacheable:You can select Enabled or Disabled. When you select Enabled, you get fastersystem BIOS executing speed via the L2 cache.

Video BIOS Cacheable:You can select Enabled or Disabled. When you select Enabled, you get fastervideo BIOS executing speed via the L2 cache.

Video RAM Cacheable:You can select Enabled or Disabled. When you select Enabled, you get fastervideo RAM executing speed via the L2 cache. You must check your VGAadapter manual to find out if any compatibility problems will occur.

8 Bit I/O Recovery Time:Nine options are available: NA Î�8 Î 1 Î 2 Î 3 Î 4 Î 5 Î 6 Î 7ÎBack to NA. This option specifies the length of a delay inserted betweenconsecutive 8 bit I/O operations. For an earlier 8 bit Add-on card, sometimesyou need to adjust its recovery time to make it work normal.

16 Bit I/O Recovery Time:Five options are available: NA Î 4 Î 1 Î 2 Î 3 Î Back to NA. Thisoption specifies the length of a delay inserted between consecutive 16 bit I/Ooperations. For an earlier 16 bit Add-on card, sometimes you need to adjustits recovery time to make it work normal.

Memory Hole At 15M-16M:This option is used to free up the 15M-16M memory block. Some specialperipherals need to use a memory block located between 15M and 16M, andthis memory block has a size of 1M. We recommend that you disable thisoption.

Passive Release:Two options are available: Enabled and Disabled. Set the option to enabledor disabled passive release for the Intel PIIX4 chip (Intel PCI to ISA bridge).This function is used to meet the latency of the ISA bus master, if you havean ISA card compatibility problem, you can try to enable or disable thisoption for optimal result.

Delayed Transaction:Two options are available: Enabled and Disabled. Set the option to enabledor disabled delayed transaction for the Intel PIIX4 chip. This function is usedto meet the latency of PCI cycles to or from the ISA bus. This option must beenabled to provide PCI 2.1 compliance. If you have ISA card compatibilityproblem, you can try to enable or disable this option for optimal result.

AGP Aperture Size (MB):Seven options are available: 4 Î 8 Î 16 Î 32 Î 64 Î 128 Î 256 ÎBack to 4. This option specifies the amount of system memory that can be usedby the AGP device. The aperture is a portion of the PCI memory addressrange dedicated for graphics memory address space.

Spread Spectrum Modulated:Two options are available: Disabled and Enabled. For EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility Test) testing may need to adjust these options foroptimal result, we do not recommend you change the default, except forspecial reasons. Some values you select may cause system instability undersome situations, please be careful.

Thermal & Fan Monitor:These items list current states of system temperature and fan speed. It can notbe changed by user.

(5) Power Management Setup Menu

The difference between Green PCs and traditional computers is that Green PCshave a power management feature. With this feature, when the computer ispowered on but inactive, the power consumption is reduced in order to saveenergy. When the computer operates normally, it is in Normal mode. In thismode, the Power Management Program will control the access to video, parallelports, serial ports and drives, and the operating status of the keyboard, mouseand other device. These are referred to as Power Management Events. In caseswhere none of these events occur, the system enters the power saving mode.When one of the controlled events occurs, the system immediately returns tonormal mode and operates at its maximum speed. Power saving modes can bedivided into three modes according to their power consumption: Doze Mode,Standby Mode , and Suspend Mode. The four modes proceed in the followingsequence:

Normal Mode===> Doze Mode===> Standby Mode===> Suspend Mode

The system consumption is reduced according the following sequence:

Normal > Doze > Standby > Suspend

1. In the Main Menu, select "Power Management Setup" and press "Enter". Thefollowing screen is displayed:

We are now going to briefly explain the options in this menu:

ACPI Function (Advanced Configuration and PowerInterface):ACPI gives the operating system direct control over the power management andPlug and Play functions of a computer.

There are two options that can be select, “Enabled” and “Disabled”. You canselect “Enabled” to enable ACPI functions. If you want ACPI functions to worknormally, you should notice two things. One is your operating system mustsupport ACPI, as of now only Microsoft® Windows® 98 supports these functions.The second thing is that all devices and add-on cards in your system must fullysupport ACPI, both hardware and software (drivers). If you want to know if yourdevices or add-on cards support ACPI or not, please contact the device or add-oncard manufacture for more information. If you want to know more about ACPIspecifications, please go to the address below for more detailed information:

ACPI requires an ACPI-aware operating system. ACPI features include:

z Plug and Play (including bus and device enumeration) and APMfunctionality normally contained in the BIOS.

z Power management control of individual devices, add-in boards (someadd-in boards may require an ACPI-aware driver), video displays, andhard disk drives.

z A Soft-off feature that enables the operating system to power off thecomputer.

z Support for multiple wake-up events (see Table 3-1).z Support for a front panel power and sleep mode switch. Table 3-2

describes the system states based on how long the power switch ispressed, depending on how ACPI is configured with an ACPI-awareoperating system.

System States and Power StatesUnder ACPI, the operating system directs all system and device power statetransitions. The operating system puts devices in and out of low-powerstates based on user preferences and knowledge of how devices are beingused by applications. Devices that are not being used can be turned off. Theoperating system uses information from applications and user settings toput the system as a whole into a low-power state.

If no powermanagement event occurs during this time period, meaning the computer isinactive during this period, the system will enter the Standby power savingmode.If this mode is disabled, the system will enter the next mode in thesequence (Suspend mode).

Suspend Mode:When the setting selected for "Power Management" is "User Define", youcan define for this mode any delay from 1 minute to 1 hour. If no powermanagement event occurs during this time period, meaning the computer isinactive during this period, the system will enter the Suspend power savingmode. The CPU stops working completely.If this mode is disabled, the system will not enter the Suspend mode.

HDD Power Down:If the system has not accessed data on the hard disk drive during thespecified time period, the engine of the HDD will stop in order to saveelectricity.

You can set 1 to 15 minutes or select Disable according to your use of the

HDD.

Throttle Duty Cycle:This is used to specify the CPU speed in power saving mode. Sevenoptions are available: 12.5%, 25.0%, 37.5%, 50.0%, 62.5% or 75.0%.

Power Button Override:Support ACPI Power Button Over-ride. The user presses the power buttonfor more then four seconds while the system is in the working state, thenthe system will transition to the soft-off(Power off by software). This iscalled the power button over-ride.

Resume by LAN:To enable this feature, you must make sure your network software andnetwork adapter (LAN card) support such a function. This function is alsocalled “ Wake on LAN “ (WOL).

Power on by Ring:If you connect an external modem to the onboard serial port, the systemwill be turned on when a telephone ring-up occurs.

Power on by Alarm:RTC alarm can turn on the system. You can set date ( of month ) and time( hour , minute , second ).

PM Timer Events:When one of the specific occurs, the count down made for entry in powersaving mode goes back to zero.

Since the computer will enter a power saving mode only after an inactivitydelay specified (time specific for Doze, Standby and Suspend modes) andafter it has no activity, during this time period, any event will cause thecomputer to re-count the time elapsed. Resume events are operations orsignals that cause the computer to resume time counting.

³IRQ [3-7, 9-15], NMI:If any IRQ or NMI (Non-Mask Interrupt) activities occur, this will causethe computer to re-count the time elapsed.

³VGA Active Monitor:If there is any VGA data transfer or any I/O activities, this will cause thecomputer to re-count the time elapsed.

³IRQ8 Break Suspend:Supports the RTC alarm wake up from suspend function (via IRQ8).

³IDE Primary Master:If any IDE primary master I/O activity occurs, it will cause the computerto re-count the time elapsed.

³IDE Primary Slave:If any IDE primary slave I/O activity occurs, it will cause the computerto re-count the time elapsed.

(6) PNP/PCI Configuration

In this menu, you can change the INT# and IRQ of the PCI bus and the onboardI/O device, I/O port address and other hardware settings.

Resources Controlled By:When resources are controlled manually, assign each system interrupt as oneof the following types, depending on the type of device using the interrupt:

Legacy ISA devices compliant with the original PC AT bus specification,requiring a specific interrupt (such as IRQ4 for serial port 1).PCI/ISA PnP devices compliant with the Plug and Play standard, whetherdesigned for the PCI or ISA bus architecture.

Two options are available: Auto or Manual. The Award Plug and Play BIOShas the capability to automatically configure all of the boot and Plug and Playcompatible devices. If you select Auto, all the interrupt request (IRQ) andDMA assignment fields disappear, as the BIOS automatically assigns them.But if you have trouble in assigning the interrupt resource automatically, youcan select Manual to set which IRQ and DMA are assigned to PCI/ISA PnPor legacy ISA cards.

Assign IRQ For VGA:You can assign an IRQ for the PCI VGA or Disabled.

Assigned IRQ For USB:If you need another IRQ to be freed up, you can choose to disable this item,and you can get an IRQ. But in some situations in Windows® 95 it may causethe USB port to malfunction or have other problems! Two options areavailable: Enable or Disable.

PIRQ_1 Use IRQ No. ~ PIRQ_4 Use IRQ No:This item allows you to specify the IRQ number for the device installed onPCI slots. Which means, you can specific the fixed IRQ number for thedevice installed on the PCI slots (PCI slot 1 to PCI slot 5, including the AGPslot). This is a useful function when you want to fix the IRQ for a specificdevice.

For example, if you want to remove your hard disk to another computer anddon’t want to re-install the Windows® NT 4.0 (and lower versions), then youcan specific the IRQ for device install on the new computer to fit originalcomputer settings.

Note

If you specify the IRQ in this item, then you cannot specify the same IRQ tothe ISA bus, otherwise, it will cause a hardware conflict.

Setup defaults are the settings that allow your system to operate at its highestperformance. When you choose this option, the following message is displayed:

If you want to use BIOS Setup default values, press “Y”, than <Enter> tocomplete the loading of the settings for best performance.

You should first load the best settings, than enter the CPU Soft Menu to set upCPU parameters, otherwise the BIOS will replace set parameters by defaultparameters.

PIO MODE 0~4 reflects the IDE device data transfer rate. The higher theMODE value is, the better is the IDE device data transfer rate. But it does notmean that you can select the highest MODE value just as you like, you firsthave to be sure that your IDE device supports this MODE, otherwise the harddisk will not be able to operate normally.

USB Keyboard Support Via:You can choose either the OS or the BIOS to support the USB keyboard.Depending on the situation. Two options are available: OS or BIOS, OS is thedefault setting. With the BIOS option, you can use a USB keyboard under theMS-DOS environment but don’t need to install a driver.

Init Display First:When you install more than one display cards, you can choose either a PCIdisplay card or an AGP display card to activate the display boot-up screen. Ifyou only installed one display card, the BIOS will detect which slot (AGP orPCI) you installed it, in then everything will be take care of by the BIOS.

KBC Input Clock Select:This item allows you to change the keyboard clock, if you have a keyboardproblem, like keyboard failure, slow typing response time, etc. You may try tochange the keyboard clock settings for optimal result.

Onboard FDD Controller:This is to Enable or Disable the Onboard FDD Controller.

Onboard Serial Port 1:This is used to specify the I/O address and IRQ of Serial Port 1. Ten optionsare available: Disable, 3F8h/IRQ4, 2F8h/IRQ3, 3E8h/IRQ4 or 2E8h/IRQ3,3F8h/IRQ10, 2F8h/IRQ11, 3E8h/IRQ10, 2E8h/IRQ11, and AUTO.

(9) Password Setting

This option allows you to set a password required to start the system (System)or to access to the BIOS (Setup).

After you have set a password through the PASSWORD SETTING option, youcan enter the Security Option in the “BIOS Features Setup Menu” to select thesecurity level in order to prevent any unauthorized access.

Password setting procedure:When you choose the Password setting option, the following message isdisplayed:

“Enter Password:“

Type your password. When complete, press <Enter>. The following message isdisplayed:

“Confirm Password:“

Type your password again. When complete, press <Enter>. The passwordsetting is completed.

Password clearing procedure:When you select the Password setting option, the following message isdisplayed:

Press <Enter>, the message “Password Disable” is displayed. Press a key. Thepassword clearing procedure is completed.

Notice: Do not forget your password. If you forget it, you will have to openthe computer case, clear the contents of the CMOS, and boot thesystem up again. By doing this, you must reset all your parameters.

(10) IDE Hard Disk Detection

After you have installed the hard disk, in old systems, you had to know thehard disk specifications, such as the number of cylinders, heads and sectors, andto enter the relevant information into the hard disk information section. If theCMOS data was erased, and you had forgotten the hard disk specifications, itwas a great problem. But now, you can use this option to auto detect the harddisk type and specifications, and the BIOS will automatically detect all therelevant information and place them in the Hard Disk data section of theStandard CMOS Setup Menu, in order to allow you to use your hard disk.

Appendix A Quick InstallationAppendix A will give you a simplified installation procedure, in order to allowyou to install your motherboard quickly and correctly.

If you need further information or if you need to change some other settings,start reading from Chapter 1.

Mount the retention mechanism onto Slot 1, then fix the screw on the fourcorners of the mechanism. Slightly and gently insert the Pentium® II/IIIprocessor into the retention base, make sure all the components are affixedsecurely.

According to your CPU speed, set up the CPU in the CPU SOFT MENU™ IIof the BIOS SETUP.

Appendix B General Discussion About HDD Installation

Most of the present HDDs use IDE interface. Installing an IDE hard diskdoes not require a lot of knowledge like installing the driver for a SCSI harddisk, but this means that the user often must install the hard disk by himself andcope with all the problems they may encounter. Here, we will try to help yousolve these potential problems.

The data stored in the hard disk are accessed through the chipset located onthe motherboard. You might often hear about the PIO mode, Master mode orDMA mode of HDD. These modes reflect the way data is transferred from andto the IDE drive and the motherboard.

What is the PIO mode? When the system needs to access hard disk data,the CPU delivers input/output (I/O) orders through the chipset on themotherboard to the hard disk drive, and then puts this data into the systemmemory. This is the PIO mode.

What is the Master mode? When the system needs to access hard disk data,this data is directly accessed from the hard disk by the chipset on themotherboard (using a DMA or a PIO mode), and then the data is put into thememory. In this case, the CPU does not participate in the data transfer.

What is the DMA mode? Usually, DMA mode refers to accessing the harddisk data by the chipset, it does not refer to the data transfer mode. Here aresome examples of data transfer rates for IDE HDD with PIO interface:

The higher the MODE value is, the best is the hard disk data transfer rate.But this does not mean that you can select the highest mode value as you like.You must be sure that your hard disk supports that type of fast data transfer,otherwise your hard disk will not be able to operate correctly.

Here are some examples of data transfer rates for IDE HDD with DMAmode:

Usually, PIO mode means that the hard disk data are accessed by the CPUthrough the chipset and placed into memory, and the chipset is using PIO modeto access hard disk data.

MASTER mode means that hard disk data are accessed by the chipset, andthat the chipset places the data into memory. The chipset is using DMA or PIOmode to access data stored in the hard disk drive. The Master mode can reducethe CPU load, especially in a Multi-task environment. This can help systemperformance.

Installing a hard disk:

In the Standard CMOS Setup Menu,♦ Primary means the first connector on the motherboard, that is,

connector IDE1 on our motherboard.♦ Secondary means the second connector on the motherboard, that

is, connector IDE2 on our motherboard.♦ Two HDDs can be connected to the each connector:

The first HDD is referred to as Master,The second HDD is referred to as Slave.

Be sure that your hard disk drive is set at Master. Actually, most harddisk drives are set at Master as a default, so you don’t need to adjustany setting. Just connect one end of the 40 pin cable on the driveconnector, and the other end to connector IDE1 on the motherboard.

Installing one HDD + one CD-ROM drive: The red line on the connectioncable must be lined up with pin 1 on the connector.

Method 1: Set the HDD at Master, and the CD-ROM drive at Slave.Connect one connector of the 40-pin cable to the hard disk,another one to the CD-ROM drive, and the other end toconnector IDE1 on the motherboard.

Method 2: Set the HDD as Master and connect one end of the 40-pincable to the HDD, and the other end to connector IDE1 onthe motherboard.You can ignore the setting of the CD-ROM drive, justconnect one end of the 40-pin cable to the CD-ROM drive,and the other end to connector IDE2 on the motherboard.We recommend you use this kind of connection, since ithas no influence on HDD speed.

♦ If all your HDDs are new, you can use the IDE HDD Auto Detectionoption in the CMOS to auto detect the parameters of all your drives.You don’t need to set any hard disk parameter.

♦ If one or several of your HDDs are old, and if you don’t know theirparameters, and you want to reconfigure your drives, you can still usethe IDE HDD Auto Detection option in the CMOS to auto detect thedrives parameters.

♦ If one or several of your HDD are old, and if you don’t want to erasethe data stored in your drives, you will have to remember theparameters (Type, Cylinders, Heads, Sectors, Mode) of the drive(s)you don’t want to erase. After you have used the IDE HDD AutoDetection option in the CMOS, enter the Standard CMOS SetupMenu to change the settings of the related hard disk drive.

Software use:The basic step in using a hard disk drive is to make a HDD Low LevelFormat, than run FDISK, and than FORMAT the drive. Most of presentHDD have already been subjected to low level format at the factory, soyou probably can skip this operation.

Boot with a bootable floppy disk, then enter FDISK

�Using FDISK: (DOS command)

This command is found in the DOS disks.FDISK is a tool used to organize and to partition the hard disk. The hard disk must have been partitioned before use. You can create one unique partition on the hard disk, or create several partition and use a different Operating System on each partition. Just don’t forget that you have to specify an Active partition, otherwise your hard disk will not be bootable. For further information about FDISK, refer to the FDISK section in the DOS user’s manual.

Appendix C BIOS Flashing UserInstructions

When your motherboard needs to be upgraded with new features or to fixsome compatibility problems of a BIOS, you will need to use this BIOS flashutility. This utility is provided by Award Software, and it’s easy to flash byyourself. But you have to read all the information within this section beforeflashing.

Before you can flash the BIOS you need to first go into the pure DOSenvironment by rebooting your system and going directly into DOS. Basically,there are two ways to flash your BIOS. One is to directly type the full linecommands that are described in this section. The utility will then flash yourBIOS. When you finish the flash operation, you will see the screen as inFigure C-2 Note C-1.

The other method is to just type awdflash then press enter, the Flash MemoryWriter V7.05 screen will show up, please refer to Figure C-1 Note C-1. You needto type “NEWBIOS” (the file name or you can use another name if you choose)into the “File Name to Program”, then press enter. When you finish the flashoperation, you will see the screen as in Figure C-2.

This motherboard not only supports the IDE Bus Master, it also supports theUltra DMA/33 HDD . If your hard disk drive supports this function you need toinstall the Ultra DMA driver software on the CD-ROM included with thismotherboard for better performance (Some model’s packaging may only have afloppy diskette). If your HDD does not support Ultra DMA/33 specs, you canstill install this driver with no harm! Complete the installation process exactlyas below:

In Windows® 95, place the CD-ROM into the computer. The main menu willshow up. Click the Drivers button, then select the IDE Master button, againselect the OS in which you want to install the driver. We have provided theOS/2, Windows® 95 and Windows® NT Bus Master driver for you. Directclicking the OS button will automatically install the Bus Master driver to yoursystem.

If you have a floppy diskette instead of the CD-ROM, you need to place thediskette into your floppy disk drive, and go into the proper OS directory. Whenyou get in the OS directory, for example Windows® 95, you can double click theSetup.exe icon, this will start the drivers installation. Please follow theprocedure below:

Appendix F Install HighPoint XStore ProUtility

We provide a useful and powerful utility in our product package, the HighPointXStore Pro. What does XStore do? The XStore Pro is a hard disk enhancementutility which can improve the system performance. The basic concept is usingread-ahead caching algorithm to improve the hard disk performance. With amarket trend where most systems standard configurations are moving towards 48MBytes memory size or beyond, the HighPoint XStore Pro provides higher systemperformance. XStore Pro is a new generation of XStore MMX Accelerator forStorage.

XStore Pro utilizes the bigger system memory size to enhance memorymanagement by working with Windows® 95 and 98. XStore Pro optimizes highersystem performance by read ahead caching after seeking with large block size ofhard disk. And best of all, XStore Pro supports several PCI Bus Master Controllerssuch as Intel, SiS, Ali, Via and others.

When you install the XStore Pro, you can choose to install the CD Xpress at sametime. Why you need the CD Xpress? We’ll tell you more about it.

CD-ROM technology is growing fast, but its performance is still unacceptablecompared to today's hard drives. The transfer rates of today's hard drives canexceed 18MB/sec with access times below 12ms. However, transfer rates for thefastest CD-ROM drives on the market are below 2MB/sec with access times over100ms.

CD Xpress was created to accelerate the accessing speed of the CD-ROM drive byutilizing the hard drive's high performance. CD Xpress reads and buffers data fromthe CD-ROM to an area in the hard drive. With CD Xpress, when you access CD-ROM data, you are actually accessing data from a swap file in the hard drive. Thisresults in a tremendous increase in CD-ROM performance without penalties.

Before you install this utility, there are several things you need to know.

Important Note

1. You can only install one Bus Master Driver at a time in your system, or thedrivers will result in conflict and cause system hangs. Please make sure youdon’t have any Bus Master Driver installed in your system before you installXStore Pro! You must remove all components of the previous Bus MasterDriver before you install XStore Pro to your system. For example, you cannotinstall both Intel® bus master driver and HighPoint XStore Pro in your system,

otherwise it will cause system conflict when you install the second bus masterdriver!

2. This Windows® 95/98 driver does not support CD-ROM Changers. If you havean ATAPI CD-ROM Changer installed in your system, please do not installthis driver!

3. We have found that the Windows® 95 OSR2/Windows® 98 version would failto load the driver on some systems using the Bus Master chipset after youinstall and restart the system. The following step could solve this problem if ithappens:

1. Go to My Computer and double click Control Panel.2. Double click System then go to Device Manger and View Devices by Type.3. Go to hard disk controllers.4. Double click PCI Bus Master IDE Controller (Ultra DMA supported).

(There should be a yellow mark besides this item)5. Click Resources and you should see a box near the bottom of the screen

that says “Set Configuration Manually”.6. Click on “Set Configuration Manually” and you will see a check next to

“Use automatic setting”.7. Uncheck the box and when the system asks you to reboot click “yes”.8. After the system restarts the yellow mark should be gone

4. De-Installation:To uninstall XStore Pro from your system, run "Uninstall" from the HighPointXStore Pro program group. This uninstall utility will: deactivate CD Xpress, ifCD Xpress is active, remove the buffer space, and uninstall XStore Pro and CDXpress from the system. After the uninstallation of XStore Pro,the hard diskwill return to its original status. We suggest users to reboot the system afterfinishing uninstallation.

5. The ATAPI LS-120 deivce will be recognized as a removable device in retailWindows®�95(4.00.95) and OSR1 Windows®�95(4.00.95 A) after XStore Prodriver is installed.

6. This driver might lock on certain motherboards. Please check HighPointTechnology first if you encounter problems.

This CD-ROM (Or floppy diskette) has the HighPoint XStore Pro drivers. (version1.2) The following procedure describes how to install the HighPoint XStore Pro toyour system. If you have a floppy diskette but not the CD-ROM, just insert thediskette and run the Setup.exe file to start installation.

Step 1. In Windows® 95/98, place the CD-ROM into the computer. The mainmenu will show up. Click the HighPoint XStore Pro Install button, thenyou will see the XStore Pro installer is preparing the InstallShield®

Wizard. When it is done, the Welcome screen will show up.

Step 2. Press the “Next” key, you will see the screen below. You then need tochoose you want to install XStore Pro only, or you want to install both ofXStore Pro and CD Xpress. Then you can press the “Next” key tocontinue.
