Scientific Notation - Adding and Subtracting Word Problems and Practice
Included in this packet: 1. Common Core Alignment including Standards for Mathematical Practices
2. 10 word problems requiring adding and subtracting numbers represented in
scientific notation to solve
3. The same 10 word problems in multiple choice format (great for students that
require modification!)
4. The same 10 word problems in a format to use with COLORING PAGES – just
find a coloring page numbered 1-10 – you can check the answers quickly by
ensuring that the colors are all correct
5. 20 adding and subtracting scientific notation problems (this is provided on
two sheets – one that is numbered 11-30 and is meant to be an extension of
the word problems – could even be printed on the back of the page… and
one that is numbered 1-20 for use by itself).
6. Task cards for the 10 word problems and individual small cards with the 20
calculation problems
7. Solutions for all 30 problems.
Common Core Alignment: CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.A.3
Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate
very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the
other. For example, estimate the population of the United States as 3 times 108 and the
population of the world as 7 times 109, and determine that the world population is more
than 20 times larger.
CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.A.4
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where
both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of
appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use
millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been
generated by technology.
Standards for Mathematical Practices CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP6 Attend to precision.

Express all answers in Scientific Notation. Most statistics given are purely fictional.
1. Bubba‟s Boot Barn is a favorite stop of visitors to Nashville‟s downtown
shopping area. Last year, 2.42 x 105 people visited Bubba‟s. This year it has
become an even more popular venue, with 2.53 x 106 visitors. How many
more visitors have been to Bubba‟s this year than last year?
2. Jilly Johnson is a fantastic jelly-band bracelet maker. Jilly used 3.73 x 103
bands last month and this month she used 2.87 x 103 bands. How many total
bands has she used in the past months?
3. 4.78 x 106 was the largest attendance record of the Polar Bear Express Chilly
Football Extravaganza. 3.98 x 106 attended at the last PB Express event.
How many more people were in attendance on the record-setting day?
4. Jupiter, the largest planet, has a diameter of about 8.8 x 10 4 miles. Mercury
has a diameter of about 3.0 x 103. What is the difference in their diameters?
5. There are a LOT of lakes in the mid-state area. The level of Lookout Lake is
4.056 x 105 feet above sea level. The level of Lockdown Lake is only 3.85 x 104
feet above sea level. How much higher in altitude is Lookout Lake than
Lockdown Lake?
6. In 2009 there were 2.35 x 106 ferrets kept as pets in India. At the same time
there were 3.43 x 105 ferrets kept as pets in France. How many pet ferrets
were in there in total in those two countries?
7. A very small but volatile bacteria takes up 1.78 x 10-2 square inches of space
on the rail of a front porch. A worker cleaning the rail sprays 3.45 x 103 square
inches of bleach cleaner over the bacteria area. How much more space
did the cleaning spray encompass than the bacteria?
8. Bubba and Fred are having a bubble-blowing contest. The diameter of
Bubba‟s bubble is 2.45 x 10-2 feet. Fred‟s bubble is 3.67 x 10-2 feet. What is the
difference in the diameter of their bubbles?
9. The biggest bowl of mashed potatoes ever made weighed 4.56 x 104 pounds
and was created at the Iowa State Fair in 2005. The biggest deep dish pizza
ever made was in Chicago in 1998. It weighed a whopping 1.23 x 105
pounds. How much more did the pizza weigh than the bowl of mashed
„taters?
10. An ant carries a spec of food to his home that is 2.34x10-3 inches. His wife
carries a piece that is 4.56x10-2. How big are their pieces of food combined?

Legal-Shmegal Jargon:
I am dedicated to making teaching resources that are
Standards Based
Strategically Paced
with fun encased
that make classroom minutes “count.”
THANK YOU for making a purchase. I am both awed and grateful that you would find
something I created useful in your classroom.
My Teacher‟s Pay Teacher‟s Store was started during a period of time in my life that
SHOULD have been tragic: Stage IIb Breast Cancer, a year of chemotherapy, mastectomy
and reconstruction AND a compound broken ankle fracture… all within 12 months! But
God took lemons and made lemonade! In my downtime gave me lots of time to create
my Teachers Pay Teachers store with all the things I had been dreaming of creating in my
nine years of teaching.: Debbie‟s Lemonade Stand!
