Token Ring - Facts

Developed in the 1970s by IBM.Sometimes known as IEEE 802.5.Is usually a star-wired ring.Very stable.No collisions since it uses Token Passing.Quite slow and expensive.

Ethernet - FactsThe most widely used network architecture.Developed by Xerox in the 1970s.Sometimes called IEEE 802.3.Usually a star-wired bus.Because of logical bus topology and CSMA/CD, traffic and collisions are real problems.

Naming system used follows the pattern:

Speed – Baseband\Broadband – Cabling Type Used

It can be tricky determining which cable type is used from the flavor's name.

10Base-T – Common Ethernet implementation that runs at 10 Mbps using twisted pair cabling.

10Base2 – Ethernet using Thinnet running at 10 Mbps.
