Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) Grant

October 1, 2003-September 30, 2006 Started project activity January 1, 2004 Award of $1,500,147



Context

Grew out of 6-year Alliance/Alliance+ (TICG) partnerships

Alliance+=PD and support for integration of RTD in K-12 curriculum (2-tier turnkey training)

Focuses on community college role in preservice teacher education

Adapts a proven set of K-12 training & curriculum materials for use in community college courses

“…to strengthen community college math, science, language arts and educational technology courses to ensure that they prepare preservice P-12 teachers to make effective use of innovative Internet-based tools and curriculum resources in the classroom.”



Overview

Focus on Internet-based real-world data in science, math, educational technology, & language arts

Library of Real World Learning Objects (RWLOs) 26-hour, 8-session, blended mode faculty

development program, Savvy Cyber Professor 3 year program involving faculty from 33 community

colleges

Savvy Cyber Professor Overview

26-hour, eight-session professional development series– Hands-on / online format– Focus on content and implementation

Incorporates real-world applications of the Internet in science, math, ed. tech., & language arts through use of RWLOs



Goals

Learn & Incorporate New Strategies for Teaching

Create a RWLO for Use in Community College Coursesand submit to RLWO library

Ultimately: Model New Teaching Strategies to Pre-service Teachers

Session 1: Leveraging the Internet for Learning (7 hrs)

Session 2: Introduction to eDesk and Community Tools (online)

Session 3: Using Learning Objects for Meaningful Instruction (online)

Session 4: Course Integration (online)

Session 6: Assembling Instructional Content & Creating RWLOs (online)

Session 7: Completion of RWLOs (3 hrs) Session 8: Showcase of RWLOs (1 hr)

• Student Impact Study conducted in Spring 2002 in Cleveland,

Miami, & Phoenix

• 35 teachers, 4 computer specialists, 1389 students in grades 2-

11

• Measured student pre- & post-test scores during implementation

of unique & compelling project

• Student Impact Study Results:

86% of students showed noteworthy gains in science

Research Findings

“Twelfth-grade students who reported using computers to collect data, download data, or analyze data had higher average scores than students who reported never doing so.”
