Warm Up: our MOON

COPY THIS IN your spiral:

•crescent - the phases where the moon is less than half light.

•gibbous – the phases where the moon is more than half light

•waxing- essentially means "growing" light

Phases

Tides

• daily rise and fall of Earth’s waters on the shorelines

• Caused by the gravitational pull between the Earth, moon, and Sun.

Two Types of Tides

• Spring Tides

–Twice a month, the Sun and moon are lined up.–This combined gravity creates the

STRONGEST pull on the water.

Two Types of Tides

•Neap Tides

–Twice a month, the Sun and moon are at right angles.–combined gravity creates the WEAKEST

pull on the water.

The SUN and Earth are in line but the MOON is on a right angle!

Moon

• is kept in orbit by Earth’s gravity.• is visible because it reflects sunlight.• does NOT give off its own light.

Moon Phases

• Earth revolves around the Sun (365 ¼ days) Moon revolves around the Earth (28 days)

• The phase of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon is facing Earth.
