M-learning origin

1970s and 1980s - Alan Kay and colleagues proposea book-sized computer to run dynamic simulations for

learning. 1990s - Universities in Europe and Asia develop and

evaluate mobile learning for students.

2000s - The European Commission funds the major

multi-national MOBIl

earn andM

-Learning projects.

The potentia l for M-learning in

India  India is a developing nation, that is

technologica lly far behind the developed wor ld. This lack of technological development has a

detriment al effect on the education sector. As a result, young people in the developing countriesf ace challenges, which make it difficult for thenext gener ation to catch up with developedwor ld.

Wireless technologies such as mobile phones andPDAs are the effective tools for learing.

M-learning

Educational prospective The aim of the project is to see how mobile devices

can be used to teach basic numeracy and literacyskills to young adults that have dropped out of the

education system. "It is not to replace normal education but to re-

engage those who have dropped out of learningand help them find out that learning is fun and can

be a help in life rather than just something theyare forced to do," said Jill Attewell, a co-ordinator of the m-learning project and manager at the UK'sLearning and Skills Development Agency.

Future of m-Learning

m-Learning may current ly be most useful as a

supplement to ILT, online learning and more t raditionallearning methods, but can do much to enrich thelearning experience.

A s devices become integrated, and mobile phones

combine PDA  functions with cameras, video and MP3players, and as t ablets combine the port ability of PDA swith the functionality of desktops, the world of learningbecomes more mobile, more f lexible, and more exciting.

The success and impact of m-learning does not, however, solely depend on the technological

developments and the possibilities they provide. Theability of educators to design and develop didacticalsound m-learning opportunities and environments that enhances learning is imperative.
