!an6ing in India originated in the first decade of *5th century. The

first ban6s were The General !an6 of India which started in *5+

ban6 in e)istence in India is the State Bank of India which

originated in the The !an6 of !engal in Calcuttain Bune *5=+.

This was one of the three &residency ban6s the other two being

the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras. The &residency

ban6s were established under charters from the British East India

Company. They merged in *1,4 to form the Imperial Bank of

India which u&on India7s independence became the State Bank

of India. $or many years the -residency ban6s acted as uasi@

#irst of all we must note the fact that these institutions ha!e

connection with the business of e&changing money% In ancient

Inasmuch as they kept their bo&es or chests of coins on benches

account of their technical knowledge and the fact that they were

obliged constantly to keep on hand considerable $uantities of the

$rom the earliest times also ban6ers have been the chief agents

merchants and were therefore in a &osition to underta6e the
