What clergy and mental health professionals have to say about this workshop:
“This workshop was both informative and interesting. The presenters shared insights and applications from a ‘deep well’ of knowledge and experience. Thorough, rich, and helpful!” Ken Carroll, LCSW
“a vital tool for clergy and others in the caring field. All clergy face the pain of suicide with church members and sometimes family. This workshop offers a better understanding of the issues that can lead to health and prevention as well as care for those wounded by loss.” Reverend Fred Wideman
“Thanks for sharing tools I can use to help families bereaved by suicide or in crisis” Reverend Chris A. Roberts
“ Coping with Crisis should be a pre-requisite for pastoral ministry. Since clergy are the first resource for persons in crisis and since suicide issues impact all demographics of society it seems logical to prepare clergy to address these needs.” Reverend Ginny Allen
“ As a clergy person I now have an assessment tool I can use with all people to determine how well or poorly they are dealing with a crisis and what I can do to get them help” Reverend Shannon DeLaureal
Rationale for workshop
In times of crisis stemming from personal issues and/or natural disasters, Clergy and
mental health professionals are vital resources. Being well trained to identify, assist, and refer their clients and others in the community who need help requires continuing
commitment to self improvement. Mental health professionals and Clergy must not
only be prepared for crises and trained as caregivers, but should continually develop tools for coping with their own stress from those roles. Suicide provides unique
challenges requiring specific awareness and training. This workshop will address the subject of crisis, giving participants general and specific skills in managing crises.
Workshop topics:
• An examination of how each person’s value system is engaged in a crisis.
• Crisis theory: a description of the development of a crisis and steps to use in resolving it.
• Metaphor for coping: a vital tool for helping someone through a crisis.
• Understanding the paradoxical nature of suicide.
• Recent at-risk group data
• Current theories on suicide
• Myths and realities of suicide in the United States
• A suicide assessment method
Power Point, handouts, and active participation by attendees will be used to reinforce the material presented in the workshop.
