A Message From Rev. Dr. Christopher Garland Vicar of Copford and EasthorpeHappy New Year to you all. If the thought of economic cuts and hardship to come makes such a greeting seem an unlikely prospect, then we can remember that a readiness to pull together, especially for those who face the most hardship, can make a difference for us all together. That at least is a thought that comes from the Christmas celebrations in which we have just been involved. Certainly the church should do what it can to foster and contribute to networks of mutual support. Meanwhile, it was good to see many of you present at the crib and carol services at Copford and Easthorpe churches. There was much happiness as we focussed on the child who brings us God’s gift of love and hope and invites us to faith and loving action in return .At Copford the monthly pattern of our services is changing for the New Year, in order to reflect what people seem to want On the first Sunday of the month, there will be a 9:45am All-age service; while, when there is a baptism, there will also be a an 11:00am public service. On the second Sunday of the month there will be an 11:00am Communion Service. On the third Sunday there will be a 9:45 All Age service and on the fourth Sunday an 11:00am Family Communion. However sometimes there is a fifth Sunday, as there is in January and then there is a combined Benefice service in one of the four churches and in January it is at Inworth.Services at Easthorpe will remain the same.May I offer my very good wishes to all readers of this publication.

Message from our Local MPPriti PatelSince the formation of the coalition Government, there has been continued speculation and rumour concerning budgets and cuts with regards to public services. Some of these rumours have caused anxiety among many constituents however, now that the Comprehensive Spending Review and local government funding settlement have been published, it is time for these matters to be debated based on the facts.Across Essex, local authorities will still have over £1 billion of spending power. While there have been some reductions in funding, this is still a considerable sum of money for locally elected councils to decide how this can be spent. The Government is giving local councils more flexibility over how they can spend money by removing top-down imposed targets and giving local communities more powers. New provisions in the recently published Localism Bill will give residents the powers to veto excessive council tax increases through a referendum. Communities will also be able to take over local assets through a right to buy and will be put at the centre of a reformed planning system. As the Localism Bill goes through Parliament, I look forward to sharing with my colleagues examples where local people need more powers to hold their councils to account and deliver changes in their communities. Many of us have experienced unwelcome developments imposed in our villages or had difficulties getting illegal traveller sites removed. I will be pressing for this legislation to be robust in protecting our communities to address these and other problems.I have also previously raised the woes of local commuters and the railway services they receive from National Express East Anglia. At the end of November I was delighted to be able to take a representative from local rail user groups to meet with the Transport Minister responsible for railways to discuss the future of railway services in Essex. With new developments across the region our infrastructure needs to be brought up to standard to cope with the additional demand. The new franchise arrangements are a chance to improve our rail services but only if the views of commuters, who are being asked to pay higher fares, are put first.Just as our railways need modernising, local roads in Essex need to be upgraded. There are a number of local campaigns running in our communities about the improvements that are needed to make the roads we use safer and better equipped to deal with the volume of traffic moving through the area. The recent winter weather has shown how vulnerable the local road network is to delays and to accidents. In particular, the A12 and A120 are roads in need of upgrading. While we may not be able to expect public spending miracles in the current economic climate, by working together we can put ourselves in best position to secure funding that is available.May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year.

News from Marks TeyMethodist ChurchWell, it has been a busy time over Christmas! All of the Christmas services took place as planned in spite of the weather, although ‘See amid the winter snow’ and ‘In the bleak midwinter’ were sung with rather more feeling than usual! On 14th December we also welcomed around 50 people to the lunch club Christmas dinner which was followed by carols and entertainment; a lovely way to begin the Christmas celebrations. It was good to hear once again the story of the birth of Jesus and to be able to celebrate all that this event means for us today. Many of our members also enjoyed the 4 part BBC series ‘Nativity’ shown in the week before Christmas, which reflected on the struggles that Mary and Joseph may have faced as they dealt with the impact of God’s involvement in their lives. Now we are heading into the New Year and in the Methodist Church this is always marked by the Covenant service – a chance for us to acknowledge what God has done for us and to renew our commitment to him in our own lives. At Marks Tey we will be celebrating this on 9th January with a service of Holy Communion.During January and February we have decided to hold our services in the meeting room behind the main church hall as heating the church during spell of sub-zero temperatures uses huge amounts of fuel. This is part of an ongoing commitment to consider how we as Christians can help to care for God’s creation and use the natural resources that we have been given wisely. Alongside this we will be sharing in a bible study ‘Hope in God’s future’ which looks at our response to climate change. The world around us is precious and this study encourages us to think of how we can be involved in nurturing and protecting it, both individually and as a wider Church. (For dates and venues for the bible study please contact the minister on the number below). At the end of February we look forward to celebrating our 108th Church anniversary with a special service. This is always a time of looking back and giving thanks as well as looking forward to see where God is leading us to be in the months and years to come. We celebrate over 100 years of witness in the community and in the words of one famous hymn “we praise him for all that is past and trust him for all that’s to come.”

Wishing you all every blessing in 2011.Ruth Ridge and all at Marks Tey Methodist Church.

A Hectic December at Copford Primary School!

December at Copford Primary School was as hectic and enjoyable as I am sure was is in all Primary Schools. A trip to London, 3 productions in school, two Carol Services at Copford Church, a visiting Pantomime Company, Christmas Dinners and Christmas Parties, a visit to Springfields and delivery of bulbs around the village were all packed into a busy three week period. On Monday 6th December 44 children from Copford travelled to the O2 Arena to perform in a choir of 8,000 voices. They departed school at 11:00 a.m. for an afternoon rehearsal before entertaining an arena full of proud parents in the evening. We all eventually arrived back at school happy and tired at 11.15 p.m. A tremendous experience in an incredible arena, memorable for children and parents alike as well as supporting CLIC Sargent Cancer Research. Our 6 and 7 year olds produced a stunning performance of Puss In Boots, a production designed for 7 – 11 year olds! Key Stage 2 children retold the Christmas story from the view point of the Inn Keeper’s daughter at their traditional service at Copford Church. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Reception children’s performance of the Nativity. After all our performances in school and the church a collection was taken to support the ‘Save A Life Campaign’ which organises life saving medicines for children in Africa. A staggering £400 was raised along with a £100 donation to Copford Church. There are of course parts of the Headteacher’s job which are not so rewarding. Like my colleagues in the area, the start of December was a stressful time with the pressure of making the right decision about staying open or closing in the snow. On such days I am up by 5.30 a.m. checking the weather, traffic and police reports before phoning one of my Governors who lives in School Road for an update on its condition. I believe it important to make a decision by 6.00 a.m. During this December period of snow we remained open until 12.30 on Thursday afternoon. It is a time when someone will be unhappy whatever I decide, however, what makes such days so frustrating is that if School Road was gritted as far as the school (a 5 minute detour from London Road) then there is every chance we could remain open. I travel from Chelmsford every day and it is only the last 400yds from the top of School Road which ever present me with a problem. It is a shame that those Essex County Council representatives who are so quick to criticize Headteachers yet are themselves so short sighted in not helping us to keep our schools open. However to finish on a positive note, Priti Patel, our MP visited school on the last day of term to present Kaitlin Reynolds with her prize for being a runner up in Priti’s Parliamentary Christmas Card Competition.David Bome - Headteacher

Dear Readers,

Firstly I hope you all had a good Christmas and your New Year is going well. In this article I would like to tell you what has been going on in the area and what changes are happening for Essex police following the budget announcements so far.We have had a spell of bad weather and during the first lot of snow there were a series of vehicles getting broken into. Mostly tools were taken from vans used for commercial purposes. Tools are often of high value and I know that insurance companies are quite precise on how tools should be removed or vehicles parked securely. I would like to remind the business community of the importance of securing vehicles appropriately when the loss of tools and subsequent business can be very expensive. Also remember Sat navs left in vehicles are simple thefts and easily sold on. Please remove them out of sight and take the opportunity to wipe away the tell tale circle on the windscreen from time to time. If the mark is there then there is a good chance the sat nav will be in the glove box.Sheds continue to be targeted. Again it is mainly tools that go missing. Tools are easily sold on at various outlets, including second hand shops and boots sales. If they are marked clearly and if you can record serial numbers it does improve the chances of returning your property to you.Speeding is a continuing concern for local residents. Recently my team have started a process of retraining Community speedwatch groups. Following that training there may then be the opportunity of police acting on the information provided by those groups to take positive action against repeat offenders. Though don’t forget police officers can issue speeding tickets on the spot. There has been a lot of speculation in the media on how the governments proposed budget cuts will impact all public services including the police. At the time of writing I know that ColchesterPolice will be changing how it operates. All shift officers will be operating from the main police station in Southway starting late January 2011. That will leave the Neighbourhood constables at the smaller stations like Copford. You may be aware that some smaller station are due to be sold off like Tiptree. Copford is not one of those at this time but in the future that may change. My role will not remain in its current form. There will be a sergeant responsible for rural policing but I don’t know where that Sgt will be based or who it will be. It may be that Copford staff will be supervised by a Sgt from Ipswich Road or Tiptree Fire Station. It is hoped that the changes will bring a more effective use of resources. The Essex police switchboard number is 0300 333 4444 for non-emergency contact. If an emergency please ring 999.Alternatively you can contact us via the Essex police web site at www.essex.police.uk and then visit the ‘my neighbourhood’ section. On that site are published the times that the Mobile police office will be visiting your area. Colchester main station is open 24hours and is situated in Southway.

Power to the people

Take control of your energy bills and get paid for it!By installing Solar PV panels on your roof you won’t only be generating electricity from the sun, but a guaranteed income stream too.

Under the Government’sFeed-in Tariff scheme your energy provider must pay you 41.3p for every unit you generate, plus an additional 3p if you don’t use it all. It gets better. If you install Solar PV panels now, this rate is index-linked and tax free for the next 25 years.

Typically you can expect to make between 6% and 9% return on your investment, and you won’t get that with any savings scheme on the market today.

Greenenviro Energy Systems (GES), based in Essex, specialises in Solar PV installations and would be happy to advise you on how you can benefit from this new Government initiative now. To arrange a FREE survey, call 0800 064 6014.

0800 064 [email protected] All GES installations

are MCS approved

Power to the people

Energy for life...

If you’re a homeowner and your roof is facing south, east or west, there’s very little to stop you earning an index-linked, tax free income for the next 25 years through a Solar PV installation. Why? As part of the UK’s commitment to meeting its 2020 renewables target, it introduced the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme this April. Its sole aim is to encourage all of us to use energy from renewable sources like the sun, and cut down on our carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. This means that every homeowner who generates ‘green’ electricity from products like solar panels will be rewarded for doing so. Taking the most conservative view, you could earn – in savings and income – around £900 per year (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk). But to protect this rate, you need to have Solar PV installed by 31st March 2012, after that the tariff will reduce; energy prices will continue to do the opposite.

Did you know you’re probably already paying your energy provider around 13p for every unit of electricity you use? Under the FIT scheme your energy provider has to pay you 41.3p for every unit you generate; what’s more, any electricity you don’t use (when you’re away on holiday, for example) gets fed back to the

National Grid at an increased rate of 44.3p a unit. (This rate applies to retro-fit not new build, and for systems up to 4kWp.)

Getting started is simple:

• Find out if your home is suitable for Solar PV: If your house is listed, facing north, has listed building status, or is in the shade of taller buildings or trees, your home is unlikely to be suitable for this kind of installation.

• Choose your company carefully: This industry is growing very fast, and many companies want to cash in. Check that the company’s installers and products are approved under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). If they’re not, you will not benefit from the Feed-in Tariff.

• Agree on the size of system: You know what your electricity needs are, so make sure that you’re not buying more panels than you need. If things change, you can add more panels later.

• Be prepared for a small amount of disruption: Most of the work is outside and scaffolding will be used, but access to the

house will be needed to fit the equipment that ‘talks’ to the grid.

• Get the paperwork: Your energy provider will not make payments unless you have a FIT Eligibility Certificate. This should be given to you on completion of the installation.

The installation itself shouldn’t take longer than two days, then you will start seeing just how much money you’re saving. A typical Solar PV system can produce around 40% of the electricity a household uses in a year but no carbon emissions. And, by being more ‘electricity aware’ you may find that you become more careful with your usage than before, which is even better for your fuel bills. Harnessing the energy from the sun has never been easier and it is an inexhaustible supply. As energy providers go, this one really is for life.

Rapunzel and ostriches aside, there are very few of us who won’t have heard about the benefits of solar panels. 40 years ago they may have been an unusual sight in England, but now solar panels, and specifically Solar PV, have come of age, says Richard Swords, managing director of Greenenviro Energy Systems.

St Andrew’s Church in Marks Tey was filled to capacity on 9 December as children from Caterpillars Pre-school performed their nativity play to relatives and friends. The play included carols and songs such as Jingle Bells and When Santa got stuck up the chimney.Staff used a donation of £75 from Colchester Children’s Charity to buy the costumes. As a registered children’s charity itself, Caterpillars met the criteria for the funding and the children were thrilled with their new animal suits. After the play everyone enjoyed mince pies, cakes and drinks before the children met a very special visitor. They each received a present and a little bag of glittery reindeer food to put out for Rudolph on Christmas Eve.

Pre-School Manager, Sarah Powell, said:“The children have had great fun rehearsing the play over the last few weeks and have gained an understanding of why we celebrate Christmas. Performing in front of an audience can be daunting for grown ups, but all our little ones seemed to take it in their stride.”

The families of all the children pictured have given permission for their photographs to appear in local publications.

Good posture is non-fatiguing, effortless and painless. Muscles function more efficiently in such alignment, which means good posture is essential in maintaining a healthy back, without it joints become unevenly loaded, creating muscle imbalances resulting in joint and back pain. Performed correctly Pilates has the potential to correct these imbalances, which is why Pats approach as a teacher is to focus on quality of movement and body awareness, which she believes is the key to the effectiveness and success of this technique. While some people become interested in Pilates for its cosmetic body-sculpting effects, the majority of people come to Pilates because it has been recommended by their physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor.Problems can arise and bad movement patterns reinforced when a person joins a Pilates class without a basic understanding of the technique, which is why Pat does not let anyone join her classes unless they do the 4 week introduction or see her on a one-to-one basis.Pat, a fitness instructor with over 20 years experience, qualified with distinction at the Pilates Institute, London. Her qualification extended to Remedial Pilates and has now been teaching Pilates exclusively for over 10 years, working alongside physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors through referrals. The 4-week beginners course will start in February (date to be confirmed). After the course the class (1 hour) will continue on a weekly basis - £6 or £20 x 4.

A satisfied customerat Gin Dental!“Since a traumatic experience during Dental Treatment more than 10 years ago, I have preferred to suffer discomfort and even pain rather than seek treatment. Although health and appearance are very important to me, I chose to adapt my smile to hide my neglected teeth. That was until last week. An article in the Copford News persuaded me that I may have found an understanding Dentist, as I was now at the stage where not only was I scared of the Dentist but embarrassed to present with bad teeth. After the first telephone call to Wayne Gin I felt prepared to make an appointment. Two days later I attended the patient friendly, Gin Dental Studio in Lexden. Not quite what one expects “at the Dentist” but then Wayne Gin is not exactly what you expect either.Friendly, chatty and most of all sympathetic. From the beginning I felt that he understood how I felt, he addressed my fear of pain and danger by showing me alternative procedures so that the fear of harm faded, and he didn’t “Tell Me Off”.One week later and after 5 appointments, all my dental treatment is now up to date, I actually volunteered to have two small fillings without numbing. Two front teeth were “smartened up” and the result is a complete revelation. I realize that getting this treatment was a challenge for both of us, but Wayne’s skills in Psychology and Dentistry made it all possible. In future going to the dentist will be no more unpleasant than a visit to the hairdresser or the manicurist.Fear can only be overcome by trust. I will trust Wayne Gin to look after my teeth in the future.Thank you Gin Dental Studio.”Mrs M, Marks Tey

Using the Winter to your advantageWhy not make your New Year’s resolution to appreciate your outside space like never before? Gardens can be as extravagant or as simple as you please and designs can suit all tastes and budgets. Even if you live in a flat there is no reason why you can’t grow a few things in pots or baskets, even on your windowsill. There are no excuses!Any garden re-shaping is best done now, in the dormant season. Replacing fences and trellis will avoid plants being trampled down later in the year. Why not reshape your borders to ring the changes or develop a new patio or decking area for entertaining on when the Summer arrives? If doing the hard graft is not for you, remember to get at least three quotations from reputable recommended gardeners who are insured and give you a clear written quote. The planting of hardy deciduous trees and shrubs is better completed now before the sap starts to rise, remember to add these to a planting plan to fill gaps, add privacy or provide Summer shade. It’s too early to plant bedding plants and most vegetables but there is no reason why you can’t plan what you wish to buy by browsing through some gardening books or seed/plant catalogues for inspiration. If planning to use tubs or pots clean these out now, disposing of old compost and dead plants so you’re ready to go when the weather warms up. Remember to shelter non frost resistant pots from extreme cold and double check that any plant protections remain in place over this cold season. All the trees should be bare now so take the opportunity on any dry days to complete leaf clearance and make sure guttering remains clear as over spilling water on paths will freeze and be incredibly slippery. If snow falls, clear paths quickly to stop re-freezing at night. Finally, if you don’t already, why not leave some nuts or seeds out for birds? There are many types of feeder available from very basic to more sophisticated squirrel safe versions. There may not be many plants showing colour at this time of year so a colourful Robin, Blue Tit or Green Finch will add a welcome splash of interest to your wintry garden.
