Geospatial Big Data
• Geospatial Data has always been Big Data
• Big Data Analytics for geospatial data is available to allow
users to analyze massive volumes of geospatial data
• ESA/ESRIN "Big Data from Space" event addressed
challenges posed by policies for dissemination, data
search, sharing, transfer, mining, analysis, fusion and
visualization
• The European EarthServer project provides access to
100+ terabytes of multi-source, multi-dimensional spatio-
temporal data using standards from OGC and W3C to
provide "Big Earth Data Analytics”
• GEO/GEOSS

Geospatial Big Data
• The next flood of Big Data comes from mobile devices.
– Human as a sensor
– Mobile and static sensors
– Social “sensors”
• GIS moves into the cloud
– Bring “processing to the data”
• We download the earth too many times
– Accessing the Cloud using OGC Services
• WPS
• WCPS - WCS
• …
• Big processing of streaming spatial data

Geospatial Big Data
• Web processing Services
– The Web Processing Service (WPS) Interface Standard provides
rules for standardizing how inputs and outputs (requests and
responses) for geospatial processing services.
• The standard also defines how a client can request the execution of a
process, and how the output from the process is handled.
• The data required by the WPS can be delivered across a network or
they can be available at the server.
– TerraDue used WPS to develop a Cloud Service that allows the
dynamic deployment of algorithms on a Hadoop framework

Standards are
like parachutes:
they work best
when they're
open.

• The Open GIS
Consortium (OGC)
– Not-for-profit, international
consortium of 467 industry,
government, and university
members
• Founded in 1994
• Work is based on
collaboration and
consensus!
OGC Mission
Our core mission is to deliver interface specifications that are openly available for global use, and which are used by Geospatial data producers and software transparently to the users.

OGC and Big Data
• Big Data DWG
– Interim co-chairs are Peter Baumann and John Herring, Oracle
– An open forum for work on Big Data interoperability, access, and
analytics.
– Encourage collaborative development among disparate participants,
and will ensure appropriate liaisons to other Big Data working
groups (inside and outside OGC), such as the Web Coverage
Service (WCS) SWG, RDA, and ISO. The group plans to
consolidate findings on this public wiki to inform OGC and the
greater public and allow for feedback.
