There is an old saying that misery loves company. well, at The City of Praise Church Ministries, we operate from the belief that happiness loves company even more.

From the moment you are greeted when you

enter the church, we want you to know that we are happy beyond measure that you are worshiping with us. Throughout the week, we want you to know by our actions and the work of our ministry that we abundantly love and sincerely care for you!

In Romans 12: 9-10, Paul writes, “don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. love each other with genuine affection and take delight in honoring each other.”

we know that our sanctuary swells with people each sunday because The City of Praise Church family has a genuine love and affection for all who walk through the door.

Please enjoy this June issue of lion’s Roar Magazine. This issue focuses on Kingdom living and the spirit of Hospitality, which is alive and thriving at The City of Praise Church Ministries.

God bless,Pastor & First lady,

Joel & Ylawnda

Principles for Kingdom Living

Over the last several months, the City of Praise family has been focused on studying what it means to live by Kingdom Principles. Kingdom Living is not easy, but it is the only pursuit for Bible believing followers of Christ.

We are using the Beatitudes as a map to guide us in the attitude and mindset that Christ wants us to adopt.

While the Lord shares the Beatitudes towards the end of His ministry on the earth, they appear early in Matthew’s gospel. This is possibly because Matthew does not want to bury the lead. That is to say, he wants to make sure that the important points are covered early.

Maybe you can identify people at work, at home and even at church who proudly exhibit attitudes that are the exact opposite of those

championed in the Beatitudes. The world tells us that being meek and lowly are undesirable traits. The only kind of humility that is celebrated in the world is that false humility that allows a person to bashfully

accept the spotlight without appearing to want it at all.

In the Kingdom however, the Lord operates from a different vantage. Characteristics that focus on humility, hospitality and service to others please God. When you are focused on Kingdom Living your joy comes from a place that people who have an “of this world” mindset will never be able to understand.

In the Washington, D.C. area, we have our fair share of people whose joy comes from worldly pursuits. They are in The Amazing Rat Race to achieve the next big thing that they believe will bring happiness. Their mantra sounds like this, “I will be happy when I get the promotion.” “I will be happy when I buy that car.” “I will be happy when I move into that neighborhood.” And if

you and I are truly honest with ourselves, at some point we have had similar worldly thoughts.

But if we are determined to have hearts trained on Kingdom Living, we will not bristle at the thought of pursuing the characteristics exhibited in the Beatitudes.

The first Beatitude is “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” By poor in spirit, the Lord is not referring to being poor financially. He means having a selfless spirit and a humble opinion of oneself. In James 4:10, we have the same instruction. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” This cornerstone principle of humility struggles against our worldly nature. But in the end, if we can humble ourselves and put others first our joy will be complete.

My father Bishop James Peebles and my mother Apostle Betty Peebles governed our household on Kingdom Principles. Because of this foundation, I do not seek joy from things of this world. My life is content because my joy and peace comes from the Lord.

The Spirit of Hospitality

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with

the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.Romans 12:10-13

City of Praise Family, it is important that as you are taking care of your spiritual health, you are also taking care of your physical health. This month’s recipe is an easy fruit smoothie that will help pro-duce endorphins.

endorphins are a chemical that the body produces naturally by breaking down foods. when your body is low on b vitamins (particularly b12), Vitamin C or certain minerals like zinc, potassium and iron, you can feel a little sluggish and down. by eating “Happy Food,” you can replenish these resources.

strawberries, grapes and of course oranges are a great source of vitamin C. bananas are an excellent source for potassium. These fruits contain natural sugars that give you energy when released into your blood stream.

and of course, if you feel that you are experiencing low energy levels, consult your physician.

Ingredients½ cup nonfat milk½ cup fat-free plain yogurt1 banana, ½ cup grapes, 1 cup of strawberries1 orange 1 cup of iceIn a blender, blend the milk, yogurt, banana, grapes and strawberries until smooth.
