Parents with kids under school age can get together and share ideas at your local playgroup. It's a chance to network and experience different

things for both kids and parents

Playgroup is a great way of assisting children to prepare for school. Also a great social outlet for mums, dads and carers to meet over coffee. For

The Pomona Walk for Heart group, the Pomona Pacers, held their Moon Walk and Christmas break-up on 13 December 2011. The group made a presentation to Faye Patrick who is standing down as organiser after more than 12 months of dedicated leadership. Faye and Ellen Leape (our most prolific walker) were also presented with 2011 Queensland Walking Champion Awards from the Heart Foundation for their commitment to the walking program.

The Pomona Pacers meet every week-day morning in front of the Pomona Community House. During summer we are starting at 6.30 am to beat the heat. We can be seen walking around the streets of Pomona and at least once a week we look for a little excitement exploring the tracks through the local forests. We claim to be one of the most active groups on the Sunshine Coast as most other groups walk only one or two days a week. There is no obligation to walk every day and we can have anywhere from two to eight members walking on any one day.

The Heart Foundation has a Walker Recognition Scheme in place where certificates and rewards are issued when you achieve 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1 000 walks. All this for no financial outlay!

Our next Moon Walks will be on 7 February, and 6 March 2012. Contact Assunta Easton on 5485 2935 or Ellen Leape on 5485 2653 for more information on either the daily walks or the Moon Walk.

The Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club is centred

around the beautiful Noosa hinterland towns

of Cooroy and Pomona. The club meets twice a

month in our own clubhouse (old Scout Hall)

at Pomona. We currently have 20 hardworking

and dedicated community minded members.

Our members are ordinary people doing

extraordinary things like supporting people

with a disability, assisting in the community

and fundraising for worthwhile causes’.

Be a part of the change. If you are

considering joining our club please call and

say hello and see what we do. We would love

to hear from you.

Sage Old Books

In the tiny town of Kin Kin, a home-based business is recreating the traditional art of hand book binding. Ian and Lorraine Bates have, for the past thirteen years, been building up their small business of book restoration, Sage Old Books. While Lorraine is involved with the resewing and recovering of the books, Ian works on paper repairs and finishing, which often involves traditional gold tooling using a blocking press and lead or brass type, or hand-held tools.

“A great deal of our work is taken up in restoration of family Bibles, which are of great sentimental value to their owners, and which, when restored, can be handed down to future generations.

As well as restoring books, we are also able to replace missing covers with leather or cloth, and to make boxes and enclosures to protect precious books from the elements and insect damage.”

As part of their commitment to preserving the skills of hand book binding, Lorraine and Ian are enthusiastic about passing on their knowledge. For the past four years, they have been instructors for the Queensland Bookbinders' Guild, running regular classes in Brisbane. Now, they have brought their classes closer to home and run regular weekends at the Pomona Community House.

The next Introduction to Bookbinding course is filling rapidly,

and will be held over the weekend of February18/19. Over the weekend, students make from scratch a beautiful, traditionally hand sewn journal, and also learn ways in which to bind and repair their own books.

To participate in this fun and rewarding weekend, contact Lorraine and Ian on 54854166, email [email protected] or via their website www.sageold.com.au
