IT’S IN THE CARDS
Did you have a baseball card collection as a kid? In
2019, the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum
will feature a new exhibit, “SHOEBOX TREASURES,”
that will tell the history of baseball cards, as well as
their design and fabrication. The “Holy Grail” section
will feature rare cards you’ve only dreamed of
owning, like the 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps rookie
card and the Honus Wagner T206 from 1909-11.
From Hall of Famers to bat makers, baseball begins in Cooperstown Little did Abner Doubleday
know he was creating the
country’s national pastime when
he sketched out a diagram of a
baseball diamond with a stick in
the dirt back in 1839. Or so goes
the popular telling of the birth of
baseball. Even though the game’s
actual origins are less clear, a visit
to Cooperstown is a top bucket
list experience for baseball fans
the world over.
The first stop for any devotee
is the National Baseball Hall of
Fame & Museum. The ultimate
shrine to the sport, the museum
celebrates baseball’s greatest
legends and most exciting
moments, and pays tribute to
the game’s history. Explore how
baseball has touched American
life, then take time to walk
through the Plaque Gallery,
where inductees are immortalized
in bronze.
If you’re planning a summer
visit, consider coming out for the
festivities surrounding the Hall of
Fame Induction Weekend or the
Hall of Fame Classic. Each event
brings both fans and some of the
biggest names in baseball for a
memorable celebration.
For spring and fall visits, consider
a VIP Experience, with an
exclusive behind-the-scenes
view of the museum’s collection.
Alternatively, visit in the winter to
avoid the crowds.
To complement your visit, head
to the nearby Heroes of Baseball
Wax Museum to stand alongside

baseball’s favorite greats. Then, whether you’re playing in a youth league or hitting homers
in the majors, make time to check out the Cooperstown Bat Company, where they’ll fit you
for the perfect bat. (Insider tip: Cooperstown Bat Company’s factory in nearby Hartwick also
features bat-turning demonstrations.) From there, browse around Cooperstown’s Main Street
shops specializing in baseball memorabilia, including commemorative bats, signed baseballs, and
vintage baseball cards.
For a first-hand view of baseball’s living history, head to Doubleday Field, circa 1920. Within
walking distance of the downtown bustle, these majestic grounds date back to the first days of
American baseball. You might catch one of the games that are played almost daily throughout the
spring and summer season.
To experience the youthful spirit of today’s game, head to Cooperstown Dreams Park, a
tournament facility dedicated to developing skills in players twelve and younger. Its popular
weekly tournaments run throughout the summer and draw athletes from around the country.
On Thursday nights, the weekly series wraps up with a spectacular fireworks display, open to the
public and free of charge.
For more game action, check out the Oneonta Outlaws and its team comprised of some of the
best college-level players in the country. Games are held throughout the summer at Damaschke
Field, one of the oldest, most historic ballparks still in use today.
Whether visiting as a die-hard baseball buff, up-and-coming young player, or as part of a family
love of the game, Cooperstown offers plenty of ways to explore the history and lore of the sport
and experience the greatness of the game as its played today.

Not only famous for being the birthplace of baseball,
Cooperstown is where American craft beer brewing
was reborn.
In the 1800s, Cooperstown and Otsego County were
considered the country’s capital of hops production, but
production came to a halt during Prohibition, and along
with it the demise of the region’s brewers and distillers.
In 1997, Brewery Ommegang restarted the traditions
of craft beer brewing. Returning a 136-acre parcel of
farmland to its hops past, Brewery Ommegang was the
first farmstead brewery to open in the United States in
more than a hundred years.
Since then, the region has become home to several
breweries, wineries and other craft beverage producers.
To explore them, check out the Cooperstown Beverage
Trail. The first official cuisine trail in New York State,
the 37-mile route features breweries, wineries, a
historic cider mill, and a distillery honoring the region’s
beverage-making legacy and celebrating crafting
beverages renowned across the country.
Beer connoisseurs can enjoy tastings and tours at
Butternuts Beer & Ale, Red Shed Brewery, and
Brewery Ommegang – or stop by the Cooperstown
Brewing Company taproom for regular events like
“Tasty Tuesday.” Wine aficionados will enjoy some of the
region’s best pours at Bear Pond Winery, Rustic Ridge
Winery, and Pail Shop Vineyards. Fly Creek Cider
Mill offers hard apple cider to cleanse the palate, and
Cooperstown Distillery features “field to flask” spirits
and distiller-led tours.

Located in New York State’s “heartland,” dining options in Cooperstown
and Otsego County are as plentiful as the region’s bounty.
Nothing kicks off a day of sightseeing better than a delicious and hearty
morning meal, and this area boasts some of the best breakfast spots
around. For those in want of a jolt of caffeine, Stagecoach Coffee in
Cooperstown or Latte Lounge in Oneonta are a couple of the perfect
places to start. If it’s something sweet you fancy, Schneider’s Bakery
features doughnuts and cinnamon rolls “to die for.” And if it’s a classic
egg or pancake platter you yearn, Cooperstown Diner delivers.
For foodies looking for a locally-sourced dining experience, the
inventive cuisine at Origin’s Café focuses on food that is good for the
body, clean for the planet, and fair for the global community. If it’s a
Saturday, head to the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market, featuring
local produce, meats, dairy, honey, syrup, jams, and artisanal food
year-round.
For lakeside dining, Blue Mingo Grill overlooks Otsego Lake and serves
up a menu mixed with Asian, Caribbean and American fare. Other al
fresco options include The Hawkeye Bar & Grill at The Otesaga Resort
Hotel in Cooperstown, the Autumn Café in Oneonta, or the historic
Empire House in Gilbertsville.
For a bite along the Cooperstown Beverage Trail, head to Café
Ommegang for its Belgian fare or stop into the Fly Creek Cider Mill &
Orchard’s famous Snack Barn.
The City of Oneonta has a food scene all its own – from some of the
best barbecue in America at Brooks House of BBQ – to an array of
international flavors including Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, and
Mexican. Two local pizza parlors, Tino’s and Sal’s, compete for bragging
rights for the best “cold cheese” slice.

Where did Cooperstown get its name?
With a history dating back to Revolutionary
times, Cooperstown was established in
1786 by William Cooper, a judge and
congressman who
owned about
10,000 acres of
land. Cooper and
his wife Elizabeth
had 12 children
– the 11th was
James Fenimore
Cooper (1789-
1851), considered
to be America’s
first novelist.
Writing about life
in this Iroquois Indian frontier region, he
became an international best-selling author
with The Leatherstocking Tales and The Last
of the Mohicans.
His love for the land
added much to 19th-
century Americans’
awareness of the
environment, and many
sites around Otsego Lake
still bear the names in his
novels. James Fenimore
Cooper is buried in the
Christ Church graveyard
in Cooperstown.

World Class Experiences in a Bucolic Setting For an arts-focused getaway, start with the acclaimed Fenimore Art Museum. Situated on the shore of Otsego Lake on land once owned by novelist James Fenimore Cooper, its surroundings are as beautiful as the art within. The museum houses significant collections of American Folk, American Indian art, as well as changing exhibitions by well-known artists. This year, see your favorite rock stars from the 1980s and 90s in Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits.
Nearby, Oneonta offers a selection of top art collections including the Yager Museum of Art & Culture at Hartwick College, and the Wilber Mansion. At the Yager, permanent and changing exhibitions range from ancient artifacts of the Upper Susquehanna’s first human inhabitants to contemporary art. Among the collection’s strengths are North and South American ethnography, Renaissance art, American Impressionism and Andy Warhol. The Wilber Mansion, a Victorian Era gem located in the city’s historic district, is home to the Community Arts Network of Oneonta (CANO), with ongoing exhibits, workshops, and performances.
Just down the road on Route 28, step into the glassblowing studio at Bobby Sharp Glassworks, a workspace where you can watch the artist at a glass furnace and join a workshop to make your own creations. Also just outside of Oneonta, Gilbertsville Expressive Movement (GEM) is home to an outdoor sculpture park in the middle of the historic village of Gilbertsville.
In Cooperstown, the newly-opened Henry March Gallery features contemporary works by local emerging artists. Nearby is The Art Garage, a pop-up space in a three-bay garage featuring
imaginative, rotating shows of contemporary art. In the town of Schuyler Lake, The Old Blacksmith Shop Gallery turns a former farrier’s workspace into a gallery featuring works by area artisans and craftspeople.
For history and architecture buffs, a visit to Hyde Hall, located within the bucolic grounds of Glimmerglass State Park is a must. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hyde Hall is a 50-room British-American country house from the time of Jane Austen. Home to five generations between 1819 and 1943, it offers a peek into a time when powerful English families enjoyed large estates in their former colonies.
If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Glimmerglass Festival gathers some of the world’s best opera and musical talents to the shores of Otsego Lake for a series of summer performances. Choose from day and evening performances of top operas such as La Traviata and The Ghosts of Versailles, musicals such as Showboat, the premiere of new works, as well as special guest performances at the Alice Busch Opera Theater.

When winter comes, Otsego County is
transformed into a wonderland of outdoor
activities like snowshoeing, ice skating, ice
fishing, cross-country skiing, and sledding.
For snowmobilers, it’s paradise. The area gets
between 75-100 inches of snow, blanketing
more than 300 miles of marked and groomed
trails that traverse parks, protected areas, and
frozen lakes.
Outdoor Activities
COOPERSTOWNLUXURY.COM
There are plenty of ways to add camping to
the mix, as well. Family-oriented sites offer
cabins, RV hookups, and tent sites, along
with swimming pools, playgrounds, and
organized activities.
Cyclists will find miles of quiet country roads
with pastoral views. For mountain bikers, the
area’s trails offer everything from easy rollers
to rugged, rocky rides.
With rolling hills, sparkling waters, open farmlands, mature forests – not to mention miles and miles of trails – Cooperstown and Otsego County offer four-season adventures, on both land and water.
There’s no better way to explore than with a visit to one of the many state parks and forests. Hike a trail, such as Glimmerglass State Park’s self-guided Sleeping Lion Trail, for an outdoor adventure off the beaten path.

While we’re delighted with all we have to share with our visitors to Cooperstown and Otsego County, we couldn’t be more proud to be part of the region known as Central New York.
Once you’ve experienced the beloved National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, you might want to add a visit to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum in Canastota to your tour.
And while we think our arts institutions are world-class, might we suggest a visit to the Munson William Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, as well? It’s a perfect complement to time spent at our Fenimore Art Museum, Yager Museum and other top arts spots.
