Grow Your Own (GYO) Project

• Provides information and tips on growing your own food

• To learn about planting, feeding, watering, and harvesting food/plants while remembering food safety

• To learn how to prevent pests and diseases, including home made bug sprays

• Observation/Participation: Weinberg Village Classes (2), transplant green onions, cooking demo (garlic eggplant)

Expanded food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

• Provides resource management, food safety, and food skills to limited resource populations

• Contributes to personal development of the family, diet, and nutritional well-being

• A federally funded program for low income families

• Observation/Participation: Family Promise, Kalani Gardens, Barber’s Point, Hilo, food demos (gon lo mein, ranch dressing, fruit smoothies)

• Innovative program to help families with children escape homelessness

Blane Tomas Observed 2 classes at Aloha Club House- local community center that offers people who have mental illnesses opportunities to achieve their full potential No food demos Physical activity- stretching Used visuals- plastic plate and plate lunch container for food guide lesson Co-taught spending less eating better lesson. Briefly went over the lesson, did not cover activity as we were short on time. Also had to fill out client record form #2 and evaluation, passed out certificates, cookbooks, and reusable grocery bag

Volunteered at the Hawaii food bank as a food sorter Sorted mainly fresh produce such as melons, lemons, grapes, apples; also sorted bread and other bakery products Brief tour of food bank and their storage facility The Hawaii food bank is a link between food donors and member agencies by providing services in collecting, sorting, salvaging and distributing food. Distributes food to 250 member agencies along with food banks on the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai

Observed Sharon providing myplate education at Palolo Valley Homes Education is done before food distribution Used food guide with myplate visual, also photos of examples of a meal using myplate method Asked participants Angel Network Charities- non-profit organization serving the homeless and at risk families Food bank- individuals/families were given prepacked food (amount depended on number feeding in family) Canned meat/products (tuna, spam/luncheon meat, spaghetti sauce), packaged noodles/saimin Fresh produce (fruits/vegetables) is given depending on availability (cantaloupe, cucumbers, onion, persimons, watermelon, beans) Bread Other items available included clothes, pillows, toys, baby items Participated in providing myplate/nutrition education to individuals receiving food from Angel Network Charities food pantry Used pictures and examples to show what a plate should generally look like Also emphasized drinking more water Assessed/evaluated individuals by asking 3 questions: 1. How many were going to try to use the myplate method in the next week? 2. How many were going to increase fruit/vegetable consumption in the next week? 3. How many were going to try to drink more water in the next week?
