Frontier research

• Research at the frontier of knowledge increasingly important to competitiveness and welfare

• Research at and beyond the frontiers of understanding is an intrinsically risky venture

• Characterised by the absence of disciplinary boundaries.

European Research Council

ERC is an autonomous body created to support “frontier research”.

ERC Scientific Council - direct scientific strategy and management of ERC

2. IDEAS €7.46bn, 15% of budget

Supporting "investigator-driven" research.

For research teams competing at an European level, across all scientific and technological fields, including the social sciences and humanities.

Grants will be provided to individual teams from a single institution or several institutions, one country or across borders. Led by a single P.I.

Two funding streams: Starting Independent Research Grant Scheme Advanced Investigator Grant Scheme

Grants funded at 100% total eligible direct costs, plus 20% for indirect costs.

Only evaluation criterion: Scientific ExcellenceScientific Excellence as judged by peer review

3. PEOPLE €4.73bn, 9% of budget

• To make Europe more attractive to researchers

• Part of integrated strategy to strengthen human potential by:

- Encouraging people to become researchers

- Encouraging researchers, from Europe and the

whole world, to carry out their research in Europe

• Builds on FP6 Marie Curie Actions

• Skills and competence development at all stages of researchers

careers.

Objectives:

Page 8: COOPERATION 32.365bn (~64%) Health Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology Information / Communication Technology Nano- Sciences, Technologies, Materials and.

• Open to all research areas of interest to the EC

• Mobility – both trans-national and inter-sectoral is a key feature.

• Strong participation from enterprises

• Grant – 100% of eligible costs. Eligible costs vary between actions.

Implementation Principles:

HOST ACTIONS

• Initial Training Networks and Industry Academia Partnerships & Pathways are Host Actions

• This means:• Host institutions/network applies for a number of

fellows/researchers• Host’s proposal is evaluated• Selected host/network advertises fellowship position and

selects fellows/researchers• Contract duration with host, usually 4 years• Fellows’ stay depending on Action (up to 3 years)
