Transcript of Coolest Car Tech Trends of 2016 (and Beyond)
In the last few years, auto makers have put a lot of time and research
into appealing to customers through tech features. The result has been
a series of stunning innovations that are being prepared for launch, or
that are already on the market. Let’s take a look at some of the best
high-tech features coming to car and truck dealerships near you.
Every day, drivers make
mistakes that result in car
crashes. Driver
override systems, which
are just starting to be
introduced into vehicles,
help solve this problem.
When a car with one of
these systems senses
that its driver has failed to
stop at the appropriate
time, it will apply
the brakes automatically.
If you thought the switch to keyless ignitions and door locks was a big
change, you haven’t seen anything yet. Within the next few years,
many cars will probably have biometric locks keyed to their owners.
When you can start your car with just your fingerprint, you’ll never
have to worry about forgetting your keys again.
Anyone who’s bought a car in the
last few years knows that many
recent models have started to
come with cameras that help
drivers see in their blind spots. As
this technology advances, it won’t
just be the drivers who use these
cameras: soon, cars themselves
will be able to “see” pedestrians
and other obstacles that the
driver might miss.
Car makers have long endeavored to find ways to make cars more efficient
without sacrificing power. This year, leading car battery maker Samsung
SDI unveiled the 20Ah High Capacity Battery Cell, a battery that can
allow electric cars to drive over 300 kilometers (186 miles) on a single charge.
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto are two names for the
same basic idea: a system
that allows users to connect
their phones to their cars
via USB port. Once a phone
is connected, drivers can
access smartphone functions
like directions, placing calls,
and playing music, without
being distracted by handling
their phone while driving.
What if you could adjust the volume of your car radio, answer a phone
call, or order your onboard nav system to give you directions without
pushing a single button? Soon you’ll be able to do just that – car
makers are experimenting with dashboard screens that scan for and
respond to driver gestures to receive commands.
Get ready for a future where your car is looking out for your health. Car makers are
experimenting with sensors in steering wheels and seat belts that monitor heart rate,
respiration, and other vital signs. With further development, these sensors may even be taught
to trigger the car to pull over or contact the paramedics in case of a health emergency.
