Three Methods of Checking Concentration

I Refractometer This simple, hand-held optical device gives a fairly reliable reading. It is portable, so can be used right by the machine. But accuracy can be impaired by tramp oils, cleaners, hydraulic fluids and other contaminants.

Oil split method This technique is about as accurate as the refractometer, but is similarly affected by contamination. It requires simple lab equipment.

Chemical titration This is one of the more accurate methods available. But the specific titration technique you will use depends on the nature of your coolant.

Complete instructions for all of these methods of checking concentration are available from Houghton.

Remember, for accurate concentration control and good performance, it’s important that machine operators and other plant personnel keep contaminants from the circulating fluid.

When metalworking fluids are heady loaded with awarf and chips, a 2.3 or 5.0 cu. ft. high volume filter i s awllable. Tbiis filter 1s capable of holding up to 800 pounds and is safely emptied with a fork lift or hook hoist.

Use in hundreds of metalworking en- vIronments has proven the HYDE Sump Cleaner to be highly efficient in the removal and flltration of grlnding swarf, drs sludge, metal chips and other par-

HYDE SUMP CLEANER FILTER Hydeis high suction lift removes all solids in the coolant sump along with the metalworking fluid. Use of a filter separates solids from fluid to serve as pre-treatment before transferring to batch plant, as routine maintenance at the machine or as prepara- tion for disposal.

Standard with all compact sump cleaners is a strainer basket and fabric liner of 1.0

cu. ft. capacity. Small enough for operator to lift, fabric liner has built-in grips. Metal basket and liner are removed by hook hoist.

Optional F23 (2.3 cu. ft. capacity) filter is recom- mended when metalworking fluid is heavily loaded with swarf and chips. Special design minimizes bridging. Polypropylene sleeve provides a continuous filter without slits or openings, preventing solids from leaking into the coolant. Sleeve fits closely at top opening and folds loosely at bottom for easy emptying. The patented, com- pound linkage and rotary latch which controls the hinged bot- tom door is a safety feature. Fil- ter cover has built-in fork lift and hoist fittings. Cover itself is an integral part of the filter unit.

Extra Power Sumpcleaner uses F50 Filter (5.0 cu. ft. capacity). A separate hatch cover is provided so machine can be used as a scavenger only. Filter unit consists of a two-part lid integrated with a bottom opening perforated steel cage, lined with a removable polyproplyene mesh sleeve. Sleeve, with elasticized top for snug fit, is constructed to minimize bridging. It provides a continuous filter, unbroken by slits or openings which can leak solids into the coolant. Patented compound linkage and rotary latch retains hinged bottom door insuring operator safety. Use fork lift or hook hoist for handling.

Liquid flow through the Tramp Oil Separator is by gravity. A fixed effluent discharge weir controls the liquid level in the unit. Separated tramp-oils and bacteria are automatically discharged by gravity flow over adjustable oil discharge weirs into a suitable container,

The contaminated coolantiwashwater flows through the porous media where dispersed and loosely-emulsified tramp- oils are coalesced and separated from the fluid. The clarified fluid flows over the effluent discharge weir back to the reservoir or central system.

tral systems, individual machine sumps and flow-through systems. They are sized to recycle system volume two or more times per 24 hours depending upon maximum acceptable tramp-oil limits. The separator‘s small size and single stage design allow it to be installed near the machine or sump. Changes to in- plant equipment are normally not re- quired. Simple maintenance consists on- lv of occasional back-flushing.

MAGNADRUM CLARIFIER Automatic Removal of High Levels of Ferrous Contaminants

Features * A unique profiled drum that is

fully energized about its width and diameter

cleaning - Drum unit automatically self

- Top or back entry * Legs can be cut to suit installa-

tion

Benefits * Easily removes high levels of

ferrous contaminants Extended tooling life

* Extended coolant life * Low running costs * Continuous operation

Reduces general maintenance costs

* Longer useful life of liquids * Easy installation - No consumable media costs

The 'Magnadrum' continuously removes magnetic particles from the flow of liquid and deposits them into a bin. The system is ideal for production machine tools cutting and grinding ferrous materials and will cope with high rates of swarf and chip production. The 'Magnadrum' is suitable for use with water based coolants or straight cutting oils.

This is a cost effective clarifier of well proven design. The benefits of extended machine tooling and coolant life are complimented by a cleaner working environment and increased productivity due to reduced machine down time and lower scrap levels.

Operation is simple and automatic. Powerful ceramic magnets fill the core of the drum, which is partly im- mersed in the liquid. The magnetic field is carried into the liquid flow by steel discs, so that all liquid passes through the high intensity field. Ferrous contaminant is attracted to the discs and drawn from the liquid as the drum revolves. The drum is cleaned continuously as it turns against a profiled scraper. Particles arriving from the drum push along the scraper until they fall into the

bin, compressing out excess liquid which drains to rejoin the flow leaving the solids almost dry.

The equipment is often married to other clarifiers acting as a very efficient prefilter. The legs can be cut to suit installation and top or back entry can be chosen. Vari- ants exist to allow tank top mounting or to contain the dirty coolant under pressure supply. Your special requirements can be discussed before ordering.

Hyde specializes in coolant management and our many years of field and laboratory experience are at your service. Experienced engineers and designers are able to discuss projects on site.

DESCRIPTION

The CIMCOOL Mix Master II is a simple, economical, and accurate method to mix CIMCOOL metalwork- ing fluid concentrate with water. The most important requirement in the use of metalworking fluids is maintaining the proper mix ratio. The Mix Master II siphons concentiate from a 55 gallon (200 L) drum and mixes it with water to supply approximately 3 to 4' gallons per minute of premixed fluid for an individual machine tool reservoir, central system, or premix tank. This is accomplished by a siphoning venturi operating on water pressure.

The two main requirements for suc- cessful operation of the equipment are a minimum water pressure of 15 psig (101 KPa) (flow pressure) and selection of the proper metering tip.

The unit features a vacuum breaker to prevent backlow of fluid concentrate to the tap water line (in compliance with OSHA regulation 29 CFR section 1910,141 (b)(2)(iii)).

The unit also features a foot valve/ strainer to prevent backlow of water into the fluid concentrate drum.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Water, under pressure, drives a reciprocating piston in the water motor cylinder. This piston in turn drives the chemical concentrate metering piston which draws concentrate from the drum and injects it into the water from the water cylinder

COOLANT DISPOSAL FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED:

- VOLUME GENERATED - PER DAY, WEEK, MONTH, YEAR - TYPE OR TYPES OF COOLANTS AND

CONTAMINANTS - BEWARE THE BIODEGRADABLE SALESMAN

- COMPOSITION OF THE WASTE COOLANT WHAT ARE THE WASTE CHARACTERISTICS HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE ANALYZED - OIL & GREASE - TOTAL SUSPENDED & DISSOLVED SOLIDS - HEAVY METALS - P h - COD & BOD - OTHER

- LOCAL POTW CAPABILITIES - AVAILABILITY OF SEWER DISPOSAL - SURCHARGEABLE AND/ OR FINABLE - PRIOR APPROVAL

WASTE TREATMENT OPTIONS

GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE TOTAL VOLUME TO BE HANDLED. THESE OPTIONS DO NOT ELIMINATE WASTE, BUT RATHER CONCENTRATE IT .

TREATMENT OPTIONS

- CH EM1 CAL T REAT MENT

- MEMBRANE ULT RAFILT RAT ION

- EV A PO RAT ION

- CONTRACT HAULING & DISPOSAL

POST TREATMENT OPTIONS: - REVERSE OSMOSIS - ACT IV AT ED CARBON - Bl OLOGl CAL DIGEST ION - EVA PO RAT ION

THE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS IS PRE-T REAT M ENT . MOST COOLANTS WILL REQUIRE SOME

FORMS OF DISPOSAL. PRETREATMENT CONSISTS OF FREE OIL REMOVAL AND PARTICULATE REMOVAL.

FORM OF PRE-TREATMENT PRIOR TO ANY OF THE ABOVE

NOTE: THERE IS NO LAW THAT STATES THAT A WASTE GENERATOR (YOU) ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS !!!!!
