KEY NOTES from the Principal
New State-wide Traffic Laws Effective January 1, 2010Please see the attached announcement form the Park Ridge Police Department regarding twonew laws effective on January 1st. The first law indicates it is illegal to text message or do e-mail
while driving. The second law states that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in a school
zone or a construction zone. The Park Ridge Police and School District 64 would like you to beaware of these changes in state laws.
Kindergarten and New Student RegistrationKindergarten and Transfer Students are encouraged to register on February 2nd and February 4thfrom 4:00 through 7:00. It is very important for us to get all registration and information forplanning and hiring purposes for next year. If you are planning to register a student please come tothe open registration times. If you cannot make it, please call the office and stop by the schooloffice with the completed paperwork.
Spelling BeeThe District 64 Spelling Bee is scheduled for Monday January 25th. The final day for registration is
Friday January 22nd. Please see the attachment in today packet regarding registration. This is agreat opportunity for students to work on their spelling skills in a fun competitive event. Iencourage all of our third through fifth grade students to participate.
Night of the StarsThe Night of the Stars is set up for Thursday, February 25th. This evening event is a greatopportunity for students to perform for parents and their classmates. Tryouts will be held onFriday February 5th after school. Look for information in this Flyer.
Reminder to Fifth Grade ParentsA presentation will be held on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010, to give parents and their fifth grade
students an opportunity to preview the films that will be shown during health class in the spring.These films,Just Around the Corner for Boys andJust Around the Corner for Girls, are shown duringthe Human Growth and Development unit of the fifth grade health curriculum The screening willtake place at Carpenter School, 300 N. Hamlin, beginning at 7:00pm. Letters were mailed toparents in December, notifying them of preview opportunities. (The parent-only previewopportunity took place on January 13, 2010.) If you wish to preview these movies at home, they areavailable at the Park Ridge Public Library.
Fifth Grade Parent Night at EmersonFifth grade parents, Mark your calendars for Fifth Grade Parent Night at Emerson MiddleSchool. Please see the attached announcement with more details. This is an important evening for
you and your soon to be middle school students. Both parents and students should attend.

IMPORTANT BUS REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR 2010-2011
February is Bus Registration Month. Students who will ride the bus during the 2010-2011 school year need to register for bus service in February. Bus registration is doneannually and forms will be included in the February Take Home. To register your childyou can download the bus registration form or obtain a registration form from yourschool office. The District must have a completed bus registration form for every studentthat will ride the bus. If a form is not submitted we will assume that your child will not
be riding the bus for the 2010-2011 school year and we will remove his or her name fromthe transportation list. Return the completed registration form to your building secretary.Current 5th grade students who will be a middle school student in 2010-2011 will need toreturn their completed form to their elementary school secretary.
Free bus transportation is available for students (K-8) if they live 1-1/2 miles or morefrom school and students (K-6) who live in an area that is declared to be hazardous.
The 2010-2011 bus fee for paid riders will be $510 for the annual pass and $305 for thecold weather pass.

625 ILCS 5/12-610.2(b)
A person may not operate a motor vehicle
on a roadway while using an
electronic communication device to compose,
send or read an electronic message.
625 ILCS 5/12-601.1 (e)
A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any
time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school
speed zone established under Section 11-605, or on a highway in a
construction or maintenance speed zone established under Section
11-605.1.This subsection (e) does notapply to (1) a person engaged in a
highway construction or maintenance project for which a constructionor maintenance speed zone has been established, (2) a person using a
wireless telephone for emergency purposes, including, but not limitedto, law enforcement agency, health care provider, fire department, or
other emergency services agency or entity, (3) a law enforcement
officer or operator of an emergency vehicle when performing the
officers or operators official duties or (4) to a person using the
wireless telephone in a voice-activated mode.
The District 64 Traffic Safety Committee encourages
all drivers to be aware of these important changes
effective throughout Illinois.

WINTERFEST 2010
Do you have friends or family who work for a business that could donate a product or service forthe Winterfest Grand Raffle?
How about the various sporting season ticket holders who cannot attend a gamedo not let thosetickets go to waste! We will gladly raffle them to help our school.
Here is a good one- How about that holiday gift that you will not use? You never know onepersons junk may be another persons treasure!
Some examples of past donations were electronic items, books, videos, athletic goods and clothing,toys, and gift certificates to restaurants, coffee shops, ice- cream shops, hairsalons and spas.
You may deliver donations to the school office, my home or if it is moreconvenient, I will gladly pick them up. Please be sure to sign the donationlog in the school office so we know whom to thank.
Any donation is great appreciated as all Winterfest proceeds gotowards initiatives that benefit our children. Thank you in advance!

GIFT BASKET SILENT AUCTION
The Franklin Winterfest will be held on Saturday, February 20th, and we would likeyour help! Last years Gift Basket Silent Auction was a HUGE success, earning about$2,700 for Franklin School! We are hoping this years auction will be just as successful.
Each classroom has been assigned a theme for a basket. The themes are listed on thefollowing page. If you would like to participate, you may donate a new, store-boughtitem related to the theme and have your child bring it into their class. Please use yourimaginations so we dont receive too many duplicate items! We accept cash donationsfor the basket as well. You may also choose to donate towards another basket, in thatcase, please drop off the donation to the office and tell the wonderful secretaries it isfor the gift baskets. This activity is completely optional, however, your donations helpmake this event a successful fundraiser. All items need to be turned in to your childsclassroom by Wednesday, February 17th.
We are also pleased to announce that if you would like to purchase any kitchen-relateditems for a basket, you may shop at Dominics Kitchen Store in Park Ridge andreceive 20% off your item! Just make sure to bring in a copy of the Gift Basket Themesheet and mention that you are buying an item for Franklins Gift Basket auction to getthe discount. How great is that?
