Cool BreezeVocalists of the West Coast Jazz Era Part 1

Rare Films from the Los Angeles Jazz Institute Archivefeaturing June Christy, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole, Kay Brown, Chet Baker, Lucy Ann Polk, Peggy Lee, The Four Freshmen, Bobby Troup, Jeri Southern and more.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26

Mel Torme and Marty Paich came up

with a unique instrumentation

influenced by the “Birth of the Cool” and

called it a Dek-tette. Once Mel and Marty

recorded their first classic Dek-tette

album for Bethlehem in 1956, Marty and

the sound became in much demand by a

variety of vocalists including Mavis

Rivers, Jeri Southern, Sammy Davis Jr.,

The Hi-Lo’s and Ella Fitzgerald.

Something Cool is a celebration of the great vocalists of the west coast jazz era and the arrangers who wrote the charts they sang. Many instrumental musicians from the west coast era have gained notoriety but the vocalists are often overlooked. This festival remedies that with a four day extravaganza that features the great vocalists of today performing the original arrangements

written by the west coast giants. In addition to the concerts there are film showings, panels and special presentations that will cover a wide range of singers, arrangers, accompanists and lyricists.

I hope you will plan to join us.
